I have a fix that works for me and makes complete sense:
(my) problem was user was not in admin group (after creating new user then -
silly me? - deleting previous user + files before logging out and back in.
To add user to admin group withou any admin user available:
Bootup with (K)Ubuntu cd and

(Etch on my desktop and Lenny on my notebook), I've also just downloaded

In Intrepid System Settings doesn't have a root mode but rather
launches the various modules as root via kcm shell. Eventually we'll
probably get some policykit goodness to ask for passwords within the app
so that we don't need to use that hack, but for all intents and

@heu: Perhaps you have a different variant of this problem. The default
Ubuntu/Kubuntu setup is that your hostname has an entry for 127.0.1.1 in
the /etc/hosts file, but it would be good if those who still have this
problem can test this.

For what it is worth, I just checked my /etc/hosts file and found out
that the first line was
127.0.0.1 localhost
while the second line was
127.0.1.1 hostname
Perhaps the first line was a leftover from manually editing the file in
some previous setup. I have now commented it out and will post
my story:
1)everything was working fine on Feisty
2)upgraded to Gutsy (had to finish it from the shell). System Settings and
everything was working alright.
3)upgraded KDE from 3.5.8 to 3.5.9 then everything requiring administrator mode
stopped working. I wasnt even getting the prompt for my

One interesting workaround, though it does require gksudo, is to simply
do: gksudo kcontrol. This generated the following konsole output:

DCOP Cleaning up dead connections.
I cannot test this since I no longer have this problem, but I believe
that the observation above from Richard holds the clue to the solution.

I don't have the problem any more, at present, so I can't test it. I
did try kdesu and/or kdesudo on kcontrol before hitting on gksudo, and
it didn't seem to clear things up at all. None of the other sudo
options including plain 'sudo kcontrol' had the same effect of getting
the DCOP
In my current Kubuntu 7.10 installation my /etc/hosts contains:
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 somehostname
But I have no problem to use Aministrator Mode in System Settings or kcontrol.

I have to see how the next installation case looks, but I got something pretty
similar but without the second dcopserver running. Initial status was exactly
as described before. The systemssettings dialogue would drop back to
unprivileged mode
I captured the console message when systemsettings fails for the first time. I
can confirm that
1. kill the root dcopserver created by systemsettings
2. run either manual network manager configuration or, at least it seemed to
work once, call the
restricted driver manager.

Please, please, please fix this - its ridiculous that this isnt a
critical showstopper bug.
'Medium' importance is a joke. In what parallel universe can you release

Interestingly, while trying to fix this, i found that it seems to be
related to ip addressing/hostnames.
As far as i can see, the name returned from 'hostname' must have an
entry in /etc/hosts mapping it to 127.0.0.1
Setting this up returned my kcontrol administrator access.
In my /etc/hosts
Out of curiosity, I just upgraded to KDE 3.5.9, simply to see if the
problem went away, and it has.
I wonder if this information can help track down the cause of this
recalcitrant bug.

I am sorry, the problem has returned.
The administrator button in KDE Control Centre (kcontrol) does not work.
When pressed, there is a Loading message and it hangs up after that.
Clicking any other function after that causes the program, to abort.
The workaround
sudo kcontrol
spews error
I didn't know if recent fixes got backported or not, but from the sounds
of it, they have. I am going to mark this as fix released, however if
you believe this is still an issue, then I urge you to reopen this

This issue dissapeared for me also in my Kubuntu Gutsy amd64
installation. However, I had to format my amd64 partitions and install
the 32 bit version of Kubuntu Gutsy for testing purposes. Once the CD
install completed I ran `apt-get update apt-get upgrade` and the
administrator button problem
This problem disappeared as mysteriously as it arose. There are two
possible reasons for this as far as I can see:
1. A recent update/upgrade using
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade
flushed the problem out somehow.
2. The encoding was not set to default on konsole. This was noticeable

from the console enables administrator tasks to be accomplished. This is
a workaround. There are error messages about uid being 1000 when it
should be 0, but it works.
kdesu kcontrol
fails with error messages.
This means that the system is usable now.
