Thank you for taking the time to report this crash and helping to make
this software better. This particular crash has already been reported
and is a duplicate of bug #1724439, so is being marked as such.
Full wrapper:
#!/bin/sh
PASSWORD_STORE=gnome
dbus-send --session --dest=org.freedesktop.secrets /org/freedesktop/secrets
--print-reply org.freedesktop.DBus.Properties.GetAll
string:'org.freedesktop.Secret.Service' >/dev/null 2>&1
if [ "$?" -ne "0" ]; then
PASSWORD_STORE=basic
fi
exec
Calling the following in the wrapper and checking for the return code
should do the trick:
dbus-send --session --dest=org.freedesktop.secrets
/org/freedesktop/secrets --print-reply
org.freedesktop.DBus.Properties.GetAll
string:'org.freedesktop.Secret.Service'

SRU Justification
Impact: A 4.15-based hwe-edge kernel has been introduced into xenial.
However some of the firmware files it requires are missing from xenial's
linux-firmware, rendering the relevant hardware inoperable.

Public bug reported:
While trying to move some emails from one folder to another, the app
became unresponsive and then crashed (or at least apport said it had), I
think what had actually happened is an underlying service had crashed,
since Kmail was still running.
ProblemType: Crash
I figured out the bug that was occurring after viewing the dkms
make.log. At the time I had set cc in update-alternatives to default to
clang-6. When I changed this back to gcc-7, reinstalled all the dkms
modules, resigned and everything now works again.

And that's the correct behavior. You have chosen not to install
recommends for this package, so reinstalling the package should not pull
them in now, aka forget your choice. Eventually there might be a new
command to do stuff like this, but we have not come up with a name yet.
** Bug watch added:
Debian has this bud marked as fixed, but it is definitely not fixed in
Ubuntu Xenial. I tried it this afternoon, problem unchanged. Has Debian
a newer version than Xenial?
