At last, four years down the road, the kernels 3.8.0-6 and 3.8.0-7 have the reboot issue fixed. No more quirks to be applied. Just FYI, the fix described by sokai did help with Ubuntu 11.xx but would not help with Ubuntu 12.xx versions. The problem continues into Natty 64-bit kernel 2.6.38-8-generic Hardware specific kernel issues are never fixed as I can observe from several cases, with video adapters being the only exception. Having said that, the BIOS on Asus laptops is far from being perfect either. I tried the kexec[1] workaround on a ASUS X50N with Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala), it /does/ reboot but then it warns about the fact it can't load the graphics card driver (nVidia Geforce 7000M) and it asks to start in low-res mode. I have the proprietary drivers enabled. The laptop just does not display the screen on restart at the normal level of illumination. Nope. The all_generic_ide option stopped working as of 9.04 (Jaunty). Things get broken with every new release as usual. Audio, web cam, hot keys, rebooting, you name it. Could not fix reboot issue on my Asus F5N so far. Hi! I become same error on Asus F5N AP222. In grub's menu.lst i have the all_generic_ide kernel parameter, but i still cant reboot the notebook. I have currently Jaunty. before i had intrepid, and with this same settings worked well the reboot, until i have upgraded to jaunty. As David has mentioned above, you have to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst file. Just find entries starting with kernel and add the parameter to the end of the line to make it look like kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.27-14-generic root=UUID=9d9c7fd7-d3bc- 473b-b482 ro quiet splash all_generic_ide To test this on your system first, you can press Esc at GRUB prompt during the boot up, and to add parameter to kernel line as shown above. If it works, you can then go ahead and modify /boot/grub/menu.lst file to make changes permanent. Super! all_generic_ide kernel parameter fixed my reboot problem on Asus F5N right away. Based on what other reporters say, I beleive this bug may now be safely marked as fixed. As to the wireless LED script, it needs further enchancement but unfortunately could not post to read-only forum Horváth Dávid is referring to. Basically, if you plug in Ethernet cable while connected to wireless network, wled stays on. Now unplug Ethernet cable - you are now connected to wireless but wled is off. The script needs to distinguish between wired and wireless connections so that only wireless interface controls the wlan LED. I'm in the same boat. Asus F5N-158, shutdown worked with 8.10 after one tweak, but restart is stopping at the end. Only the shutdown button helps. I will try the Jaunty kernel today. This bug has been there since 8.04 and still exists with 9.04 beta now. Apparently its limited to ASUS Laptops. Related bugS to being unable to restart: 1) Restart either hangs on the Xubuntu Progress Screen or shows a gray screen with randomly appearing black and white vertical and horizontal lines. 2) Creating terminal sessions/screens is impossible. Just installed Intrepid on an ASUS F5N, and after the install the Live CD did not reboot, it stayed at Close tray and press enter... forever. I had to use the power button. Looking at the attachments in this bug report, I noticed that uname-a.log was flagged as a patch. A patch contains changes to an Ubuntu package that will resolve a bug, however that attachment doesn't appear to be one. Subsequently I've unchecked the patch flag for it. In the future keep in mind the definition of a patch.
