It appears as though GIMP 2.10 was installed via PPA, causing the
conflict. Packages from PPAs are not officially supported.

The items included with gimp-plugin-registry already exist within the
package from that PPA, which is why you're seeing the error.
Furthermore, PPA package installations are not supported.

The cause is the incorrectly created .deb file in the PPA. As such,
installations from PPAs are not supported.

to be largely unmaintained. Last commit was November 16, 2015. Issue
seems to be related to this upstream bug:

This should now be more than a wishlist item as this is a major release
that happened it November. The new version fixes a bug that causes DAWs
such as Ardour and Qtractor to crash. This needs to be packaged
immediately. If I have to do it myself, I will. https://github.com/calf-

problems maintaining it, like for example in the OpenSSL 1.1 support
  case.

Following in the footsteps of Debian[1], all packages directly or
indirectly depending on qt4-x11 (like this one) must either get ported
to Qt 5 and uploaded to the development release or get removed (by
means of demotion to -proposed or removal of the package) before the
19.04 release. If it is possible to port your package by the 18.10
  release, please do so.

If you have any questions about porting or this transition, please ask
in #ubuntu-qt (preferred) or directly ping me

To be clear, this is NOT a bug in the Ubuntu gimp-plugin-registry
package, but a bug in the package in the PPA that people are adding,
which is NOT supported by Ubuntu.

2018-08-10 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
@bigrock That is simply not true. This bug report as well as #1780683 (a
duplicate of this bug) shows the installation media as 'Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
"Bionic Beaver"', which indicates these are fresh installs.

The bug is in the erroneous packaging of the GIMP 2.10 package in the
PPA used. It is a packaging conflict with the gimp-plugin-registry
package in the repo which is happening when not removed prior to
installing the package via the PPA referenced here:
https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2018/05/gimp-2-10-ubuntu-download

Basically, people aren't following the instruction to uninstall GIMP 2.8
prior to installing GIMP 2.10, which the PPA owner could easily force by
including the lines in the debian/control file I mentioned in comment #3
above. Unfortunately, there's no way to file a bug against the package
in the PPA which is the real culprit here.

This is NOT a bug with the gimp-plugin-registry package in Ubuntu, but a
package conflict with an unsupported package.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1787414] Re: ardour-5.12.0 crashed with SIGSEGV in calf_plugins::lv2_instance::lv2_instance()

2018-08-16 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
I hesitate to mark this as a dupicate, but here's the related bug
report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/calf/+bug/1769785

One workaround is to remove the calf-ladspa package, which should be
done anyhow as it's depricated.

@otto06217 It is not depricated in 18.04 since Gimp 2.10 is not included
in Ubuntu 18.04. Gimp 2.10 is unsupported in Ubuntu 18.04 for reasons
listed here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gimp/+bug/1759625

Basically, Gimp 2.10 will not be in 18.04 for the forseable future, and
your package is causing erroneous bug reports. Please add the lines in
comment #3 to your PPA package. Thank you.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1788943] Re: after upgrade to xubuntu 18.04 from 16.04, gimp fails to launch...

2018-08-24 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
If you installed GIMP from outside the repos at any time before the
upgrade, it would make sense that it would be removed for compatibility
reasons. Also, any and all installations from outside the official repos
are not supported.

The reason GIMP 2.10 was not included in 18.04 is due to the fact that
GIMP 2.10 breaks MyPaint 1.2 due to a library compatibility issue. Since
MyPaint 1.2 and GIMP 2.8 are included in the Ubuntu Studio flavor, it
would have broken the entire flavor. Additionally, GIMP 2.10 was
released after the feature freeze.

So, until MyPaint releases a 1.3 version, 18.04 will be stuck with GIMP
2.8. Ubuntu 18.10 will contain GIMP 2.10, and as such MyPaint was
dropped from Ubuntu Studio until the bug is corrected. See
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gimp/+bug/1759625.

Since this bug and workaround involves installation from outside the
official Ubuntu repos, this bug is invalid.

Title:
after upgrade to xubuntu 18.04 from 16.04, gimp fails to launch...

Status in gimp package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
I updated to xubuntu 18.04 a few days ago. First re-use of gimp
(right click on image and gimp is missing from the context menu) leads
me to discover gimp is no longer installed.

`which gimp` as user and as root does not find an executable

going to https://gimp.org shows me there is a new version, and
  incidentally a new install method.

The method works. On the the gimp website, however, there is this
perfect description of the current situation with ubuntu, and a clear
request to take action. So, ubuntu, crew, please do the right thing.

  I quote (emphasis added):

Once installed, it [gimp] will be made available exactly the same way
as other applications (menus, desktop overview, or any specific
application launch process used by your desktop).

*If this is not the case, we suggest to report a bug to your desktop
or distribution asking for proper support of flatpak*. In the
meantime, you can still run it by command line (not as the recommended
  method, only a workaround):

  flatpak run org.gimp.GIMP//stable

  End of quote

So, the workaround to the bug is included. Very handy.

I would much prefer to be using the 2.10 release, with a proper
install / distribution method, than the 2.8 release (and all the ppa
nonsense put out on the web).

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1787857] Re: USB mouse cursor lags after random time of correct behaviour

2018-08-19 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
Please post this in the forums at ubuntuforums.com or at askubuntu.com.
Also, please check to see if this is happening with any of the other
flavors, especially Xubuntu. For now, I have to mark this bug as
incomplete since further information may be required, such as your
specific hardware information. Moreover, the bug has to be targeted at
a specific package and not the Ubuntu flavor in general, so until there
is further information this bug is incomplete.

Title:
USB mouse cursor lags after random time of correct behaviour

Status in Ubuntu Studio:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I installed Ubuntu Studio 18.04.1 LTS. After the first apt-get update I
noticed the following behaviour:
after havig logged in, my USB mouse works normally for about ten seconds,
then the cursor starts lagging a lot which makes the mouse pretty much unusable.
The last dmesg always contain lines these: (more in attached file)

  [<9e659b0c>] irq_default_primary_handler threaded
[] usb_hcd_irq
  [<9e659b0c>] irq_default_primary_handler threaded
[] _rtl_pci_interrupt [rtl_pci]
  Disabling IRQ #18

Out of frustration & curiosity I disabled most autostart apps
(Settings > Session ... > Autostart) and re-enabled them after
rebooting. Since then I rarely encounter the lagging cursor. If I open
Settings > Mouse & Touchpad and toggle any option on/off the cursor
  starts lagging.

How can make the cursor work reliably?
Some comment in dmesg mentions "irqpoll" boot option

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1788439] Re: xubuntu 18.10 - gimp export with thumbnail changes to landscape

2018-08-22 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
GIMP 2.10 isn't included in Ubuntu 18.04 and is therefore unsupported.
However, by the output from the bug report, you're using 18.10 (for
testing purposes, I'm guessing)? If so, I recommend editing your bug
description.

  Two problems:

  1. When exporting a .jpg image, that has a thumbnail image, to the

changed to landscape. This is new to gimp 2.10.

  2. Small .jpg images exported to the desktop, with or without a
thumbnail, do not show the icon. This is a gimp problem. If I use

Adding otto06217 to this bug. Otto, your PPA package is causing a
conflict with the official package gimp-plugin-registry. Please add
"Conflicts: gimp-plugin-registry" "Replaces: gimp-plugin-registry" and
"Provides: gimp-plugin-registry" to your debian/control file to force
the uninstallation of that package and to prevent it from being
installed with your package.

Those guides had you installing the new version of gimp from a PPA. To
do that, you must first uninstall all packages related to gimp.
Additionally, this is not a valid bug since installations from PPAs are
not officially supported.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1769785 ***

New package is in the works for calf-plugins 0.90.1. The calf-ladspa
package is deprecated and will be uninstalled with the new version,
which includes the calf-lv2 plugins as well. Since this is related to
bugs fixed in 0.90.1, I am marking this as a duplicate.

Based on the date of the report, this may be with 12.04, 13.04, or

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1759625] Re: FFe: Sync gimp 2.10.0~RC1-1 (universe) from Debian experimental (main)

2018-04-13 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
Unfortunately updating gimp to 2.10 breaks mypaint. Until mypaint is
updated to a version that uses the newer version of libmypaint, we will
be unable to include gimp at this time as it will cause workflow
difficulties with some of our userbase. Releasing gimp 2.10 as an SRU
(so long as mypaint can be updated to 1.3 after its release) would be
the best route. Another option is to encourage the snap version of gimp
2.10 once released for those who want/need it.

At this time, on behalf of the Ubuntu Studio team, we recommend no FFe
for this case as it will break mypaint.

  Hi,

I have two computers on my desk, computer A and B.
But i have only one set of speakers connected to computer A.
To play audio from computer B on the same speakers i connected it to the
line-in of computer A.

In Ubuntu 9.04 it was really easy to get this to work, just opened the
channel at volume control.
On 9.10 its more difficult then it looks.

When i open the input channel at pavucontrol and turned mute off i still hear
no audio from computer B.
What i found out (after a while of google'ing) is that you actually need to
install gnome-alsamixer and open the channel there too before it works.

Could this get more user friendly so gnome-alsamixer isnt needed anymore ?
Is this a bug in povamonitor, or the way the fresh install of Ubuntu is set
up ?

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1807765] Re: audacious 3.10 does not have QT interface option in bionic

2018-12-12 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
Looks like Panda Jim is ubuntuhandbo...@gmail.com and Webupd8 is
ad...@webupd8.org. You can find email addresses for any PPA owner by
going to https://launchpad.net/~{username} where {username} is the first
part of the PPA URL (ppa:{username}/{ppa}), for instance
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntuhandbook1 would be Panda Jim.

  Hello Ubuntu and Webupd8 people,

  Regarding Audacious package

  https://launchpad.net/~nilarimogard/+archive/ubuntu/webupd8

The current version of Audacious 3.10 is not installing the QT version
which it is supposed to do nor can I invoke it from the console
terminal command either, which may be because it was not compiled with
the QT option enabled. This was working before. I have contacted
Audacious developers and they say it is a PPA maintainer problem
  issue.

Please check and fix this asap. Thank you.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone!

I am using Linux KDE Neon based on Ubuntu 18.04 and Linux Mint 19.x based on

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1803924] Re: Gimp conflict with MyPaint

2018-11-19 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
@jbicha I agree, but I am not sure if this is really a bug with gimp
since the problem is MyPaint's reliance on an older version of the
library, and ultimately their failure to release a newer version that
relies on libmypaint 1.3. We first approached this topic over 6 months
ago (prior to Bionic's release) and it went nowhere. This is frustrating
since we want to get MyPaint back in Ubuntu Studio, but we're stuck with
them being not coinstallable.

@immatt-au This is a known issue, see http://ubuntustudio.org/2018/05
/regarding-gimp-2-10/ and http://ubuntustudio.org/2018/10/ubuntu-
studio-18-10-released/ (specifically in "Other Changes). That said,
thanks for this report as it does bring more attention to the matter.
Additionally, according to the github issue linked above, it is a known
issue in Fedora as well.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1754944] Re: Crash in csladspa when starting ardour

2018-12-19 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
[Impact]

 * Currently, this is the number one bug affecting Ardour users of Ubuntu
(including Ubuntu Studio).
 * Please see https://discourse.ardour.org/t/ubuntu-studio-17-10-problem/88933
https://discourse.ardour.org/t/ardour-wont-load-existing-sessions-or-new-sessions-paid-user/99895

[Test Case]

 * Install Ardour in Ubuntu (or simply installing Ubuntu Studio) and run
Ardour. Large potential for immediate crash without explanation or
apport bug.

 * Workaround: uninstall csladspa

[Regression Potential]

 * None.

[Other Info]

 * Per the Ardour team, this is currently their number one bug report. Only
workaround is to remove csladspa which isn't ideal for Ubuntu Studio users
expecting the distro to work "out of the box."
 * Working with the Ardour team keeps (and/or reestablishes) Ubuntu (and
therefore Ubuntu Studio) as a recommended distro for audio production and use
of their product. This bug is currently an hindrance to that effort.

  Won't Fix

Bug description:
I have a M-audio Ozone USB audio and midi interface/controller working great
with UbuntuStudio (on Hardy Heron, with the daily latest updates) and
2.6.24-16-generic kernel...
But by default, Ubuntu Studio uses 2.6.24-16-rt (preempt)... I cant get the
Ozone (with the madfuload firmware) working with this RT low-latency kernel...

The lsusb shows me the deviced in a bus, connected.
But for some unknow reason, the snd-usb-audio could not get running and just
my onboard sound card are founded at "asoundconf list" command.

  What should we do?

Thanks, and so sorry... my english is so poor.

Bug description:
Celtx is a film/tv production tool that includes basic scriptwriting
software. It's based on the mozilla codebase, and I believe is mostly written
in javascript. It's license is an MPL Derivative. There is already a debian
rfp: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=409048
  http://www.celtx.com/

Earlier sources can be found on mozdev, but since it's mostly
javascript, the source and the binary should be the same.

  Description added from #249715

  Description:
Celtx is the world's first all-in-one media pre-production software. It has
everything you need to take your story from concept to production. Celtx
replaces 'paper, pen & binder' pre-production with a digital approach that's
more complete, simpler to work with, and easier to share.

  Multi-Media Friendly
Celtx helps you pre-produce all types of media - film, video, documentary,
theater, machinima, comics, advertising, gaming, music video, radio, podcasts,
videocasts, and however else you choose to tell your story.

  All-In-One
Unlike scriptwriting software, you can use Celtx for the entire
pre-production process - write scripts, storyboard scenes and sequences,
develop characters, breakdown & tag elements, schedule production, and prepare
detailed and informative production reports for cast and crew.

  Fully Integrated
Celtx is designed to help your entire production team work together on a
single, easy to share project file - eliminating the confusion of multiple
project files, and the need for 'paper and binder'.

  World Community of Media Creators
More than 250,000 media creators in 160 countries create with Celtx in over
20 different languages. Celtx is used by independent filmmakers and studio
professionals, and by students in over 1,400 universities and film schools -
many that have adopted Celtx for teaching and class work submission.

  Non-Linear Project Development
Unlike scriptwriting software, Celtx puts a choice of fully integrated
development tools right at your fingertips, giving you total flexibility to
determine how your story takes shape.

  License:
Celtx is distributed under an open source license, so you can download it,
use it, and distribute it for free.
Celtx uses the CePL, which is a derivative of Netscape's Mozilla Public
License (MPL).
