Re: help configuration smtp server
Dear Maxim and all: After trying to understand and find solutions to my last issues with the router, I have come to the conclusion that this is far out of my league and I might run the risk of damaging my work trying to fix something for which I don't have enough knowledge, least expertise. Before leaving I'd like to sincerely and warmly thank all those who have tried to help me understand how OM works and what it requires with no other interest in mind, just sharing knowledge, but specially I'd like to thank Maxim Maximus "The Genius", despite your last suggestion was the door to my downfall (reality can be tough and kick you hard, but it's reality), I believe your work here is really commendable, answering hundreds of emails very quickly and to the point (those days I was away working, the amount of emails that accumulated in my inbox were a true burden to read through in case something of value to my particular needs could be useful - i just can´t imagine having to find solutions and answer each one to pick up lost time). I don't use emoticons so: clap, clap, clap. Tharrrk, in case you read this, I tried to answer your personal emails but they bounced back. With my Best Regards to all, (I'll wait for a week Maxim, in case anyone wants to answer this and then I'll ask you to take me off the list, thanks). Dear Tharrrk: Many thanks for all your comments. Much food for thought, and to digest, too much to take in, in just one gulp. After I digest all your comments, specially your personal ones (as they have been on my mind, but I'm not sure if someone with my needs (and knowledge) should get into a self administrated OS), I'd like to explain my fears to you, if you are willing, and maybe you can convince me I'm wrong, but I don't want to bore everyone in this thread with personal things. Thanks for your non-advert, I do something similar to not get spammed, but a bit more simple: My name is R?i$c%h?a¿r, but some people keep on asking me where is my email. In that case you will have to set up a DNAT rules (if your router is able to do so) for every single port that OM requires, or just put a range 80-65535. At that very moment your "server" (did you mentioned windows?) is exposed to any attack from the internet. You may still be unable to access "yourself" over the public IP, due to some limitations in routing. You may also have an option to put your local ip (192) into so-called DMZ, which basically does the same. Please read the basic docs for example here: http://whatismyipaddress.com/nat --- do not read below if you are not interested in personal opinions --- Anyway, you may still be limited by your internet connection upload speed and even if OM would finally work for you it may be hardly usable or would be a pain in the "S" for the invited. My best recommendation would be to invest few bucks and use VPS. Install the best tested OS (which one would you recommend btw @Maxim ? :) CentOS? Ubuntu Server LTS?), follow instructions step by step (https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OPENMEETINGS/Tutorials+for+installing+OpenMeetings+and+Tools) and YOU ARE DONE IN 30 MINUTES. I've done so and I'm so happy now. I don't use OM for commercial interest but my time spent on setup, amount of hair that would be missing on my head, possible divorce and loosing a job for not sleeping at all could hardly be compared to 3,5 EURO PER MONTH I pay for VPS. Everything else is FREE. I don't want to make any advertisements here but I use the very basic one (1x2,4GHz, 2GB RAM, 10GB SSD) from a company which name is 3-letters long, the first one looks like zero, the last one is H and the middle one looks like backslash and forward slash glued together :D And - what is the best for you in this case - you will LEARN A LOT OF NEW THINGS during some time! :) All the best and wish you good luck!!! Re: help configuration smtp server
Sorry Maxim for making you go through all that. By then I was kind of tired and decided to dump the OM install and installed it again. After doing that I thought maybe the self-populating login form had self-populated the user and password with data of a previous install (Chrome saved data) and as I was tired I didn't notice the different user name. But, as I dumped it I can't go back and try other usernames and passwords. Maybe I cried wolf with no wolf around, sorry about that. Too much trying to understand readings out of my range. Something strange. Now I can't get into Openmeetings. It says Username and/or password are incorrect. Was this due to disabling the firewall, disabling my antivirus or for using telnet? Finally I was able to send emails.
Make sure convert.exe is ticked. Hello Tharrrk: Thanks for your suggestion. I'm doing this on my desktop computer, with Win10 where I have OM installed (I have a laptop with WinXP to test as an attendee but haven't tried telnet there yet). I opened a cmd window and tested: telnet smtp.gmail.com 465 When I click enter it activates, and I could distinguish the word "connecting" coming up before the whole window went blank (or black if you prefer) with no text in it. In my case my escape character is "q", with which I recover the usual cmd prompt. I tried first with: $telnet smtp.gmail.com 465 but it does not recognise the character "$". After clicking Enter "connecting" went by very fast before going blank, so maybe there was something more written there like: Trying 74.125.133.109... Connected to gmail-smtp-msa.l.google.com. but I can't be sure. Can I consider 465 is enabled? Maybe the checking behaviour is a bit different on Windows 10? Anything else I can do? Hello Maxim: I checked “Telnet Client” in Windows 10 Control Panel, then checked telnet was enabled and I used the following command to check port 465: telnet 181…myIP…. 465 and it delivered a blank cmd window. Hello Coscend: Thanks for your answer. Let me see if I understand. If one of my attendees receives this link: http://localhost:5080/openmeetings/hash?invitation=. He can only enter the room using my computer? I suppose the same goes if I put my IP address instead of "localhost". Right? I must say that link was created by my installed OM, in the room, with the form to send an invitation. If I can't use "localhost" in an invitation why does OM create that link instead of something else. I can't edit that link on the frontend. My current install has the following in config: smtp_server smtp.gmail.com smtp_port 465 system_email_addr myem...@mywebsite.com email_username myem...@mywebsite.com email_userpass my password for GSuite mail.smtp.starttls.enable 1 application.base.urlhttp://localhost:5080/openmeetings/ I have noticed that when I change the "system_email_addr" in the Admin> Config, the following log line does not change, it still shows the email I used as the "user" email when I installed OM (myem...@mywebsite.com). Many thanks Maxim Persistence worked great (just shows persistence is a great philosophical attitude) BTW, when I failed to install, for different reasons, I noticed that if I tried to restart Red5 after closing the cmd window, Red5 would get blocked, and the only way to get it fully running again was to delete the folder I had OM in, and extract all the zipped files into a new folder again, that is, a new Red5. Is this the usual situation? I have no problem with unzipping OM again, each time it might be required, but I'm just curious if I can be avoid this with some easy tweak. Thanks again. If I leave those textboxes empty, as soon as I click on "move to the next page" I get a red flag across the top of the form (attached image) saying "The "Login" field is mandatory", that is, I understand I have to specify a "User". I try to override this clicking on the "move to the next page" button and it is not possible. If I use the word "user" without specifying a password, I can move through but at the end I get the error warnings giving the exception "There is no user". I'd like to get back to where I left this, if you have time to have a look. I have tried to install OM 3.3.0 with both User and Password textboxes empty in the Data Base form and also using the word "user" as User. When I use the word "user" and specify the password as "secret" I can keep on installing till the final page where I get a string of error warnings giving as Exception "There is no "user", or a similar wording". I am using the Apache Derby (by default) database as it worked OK with OM 3.2.1 Thanks, Richard -- -- On Fri, 14/7/17, Maxim Solodovnik <solomax...@gmail.com> wrote: Subject: Re: help configuration smtp server To: "Openmeetings user-list" <user@openmeetings.apache.org> , "Richard Pérez" <traductorchi...@yahoo.co.uk> Date: Friday, 14 July, 2017, 12:37 Congrats :) On Fri, Jul 14, 2017 at 11:23 PM, Richard Pérez <traductorchi...@yahoo.co.uk> wrote: > Sorry, when I click reply it just picks up the "From" email not the "Cc" ones. Thanks Andrea for your quick reply, and specially for correcting my mistaken idea. Bandwidth: what a coincidence, I was just reading a jitsi.org thread http://lists.jitsi.org/pipermail/users/2017-June/013240.html that brought that into my radar. The truth is I hadn't thought of that, considering commercial webinar services offer hundreds of attendees, without jerking a muscle. I suppose they have their own servers, something I don't have, except for my own computer. I suppose my computer, the bandwidth I receive from the phone company would be my server, right? I haven't looked into the calculations given in that Jitsi thread, but is there an easy way of calculating the bandwidth use if only presenter has Audio/video tuned on? I don't really expect to get so many attendees: I'll be lucky if there are 10, 25 would make me very happy, and I don't dare say in a public venue what might happen to me with 50 or more... I'd probably divide those registrants into two different groups with different dates. Thanks again Andrea for your help. OpenMeetings Broadcaster vs OpenMeetings Receiver
Dear all advocates: I am not an app developer, I scarcely get around as an advanced user of software. For some time I have been looking for a Webinar service so I can offer my colleagues, and anyone interested in professional translation, a webinar where I can deliver my experience and, maybe, increase my income a bit. However I have crashed with the inability of all webinar companies (the Goto, the Jam, Any, and a long etcetera) to provide payment options for everyone. They are all centered on Credit Cards or PayPal (which is the same as credit cards). Some of them even offer false or misleading advertising on their websites saying they accept wire transfer, but when you ask them to provide the details they disappear (Goto), or they answer with links to pay with a credit card (Zoom) and when they finally answer to the question, they say they only accept bank transfer if you pay a whole year's subscription (many hundreds or thousands of dollars), despite they were well aware I could only pay by month. I am not rich, and I don't have access to a credit card, and these companies are not capable of offering other payment systems (like Skrill, Xoom, and others). Why they don't? The easy answer is they are idiots because they might be losing business opportunities, focusing only on the "big money", but maybe there is another reason. Well, I won't rant anymore. I am here because I thought I might be able to adopt OpenMeetings, maybe the only alternative to a market which really is only for an elite. I have worked with open source software before (like Joomla - even tweaking its inner organs to create my own functionalities), but of course, with much help from the experts or finding common solutions to problems on the Internet, so I am very aware and grateful of the fantastic work you do. If I can do this with OpenMeetings, even if it takes time, it would be very worthwhile. However, although I am confident, the problems I have found installing, configuring and creating a webinar with OpenMeetings, can be solved eventually, there is one issue that might not have an easy solution at this moment. I must say this mail is not purposed to criticize but to understand OpenMeetings real functionalities at all levels, at this point of time. This issue would be the following: Me, as OpenMeetings-Webinar manager, host and presenter or “broadcaster”, I should go into all the tasks required to have it up and running effectively and efficiently (ideal but not impossible) to deliver a given webinar or provide a meeting place. This requires lots of downloading, installing many different apps, changing settings in my computer, solving quite a few install and usability issues, and creating an appropriate guide with access procedures for my “receivers”, those who will watch my webinar(s) to register and enter the meeting as easily as possible. However, if my “receivers” have to go through that same process, downloading, installing, etc., most probably I won’t have any “receiver”, even if my webinar was worth a Grammy. Most commercial webinar services just require one download and a simple activation. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but, with OpenMeetings, must those users who will be “receiving” my “broadcast” go through the same procedures with imagemagick, FFMpeg, Ghostscript, SWFtools, SOX, Environment variables, install and configure OpenMeetings, screensharing download, and whatever else I haven’t discovered yet? Or is there a way for “receivers” to enter a room with a simple download and a pair of clicks? Please excuse for such a lengthy post, including the rant, and I hope anyone can give me a bit of light on this, the “receivers” side. Regards, Richard
