First, make sure that you downloaded LibreOffice from the official website:
www.libreoffice.org (or one of the localized variant, xx.libreoffice.org).
Also make sure that you didn't download the help package by mistake. Both
files (the main installer and the offline help installer) are MSI files,
but the main installer is quite larger (around 200MB).

If you're sure you have the right file, maybe the download got corrupted.
You can check it's exact size and some hash values used to validate a
download here:

Re: [libreoffice-users] Which components do you use most?

2014-05-19 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
It might be interesting to ask the same question in a few other places,
although some places might need options such as i don't use office
software often or using the names of the equivalents in KOffice/Caligra.
I wonder if a proper vote thing could be set-up easily on the Apache
OpenOffice forums and/or the Ask LO forum. It still wouldn't be a proper
indication as people could vote again on each different place. Still it
would give a larger population froma slightly more diverse group(s).

Don't worry about having gone against most of the respondants. It's
important that we kinda take it in turns to push boundaries as it helps us
be a more rounded community. It is good that each person here makes a
difference.

[libreoffice-users] How to clone a document, including outline numbering?

2014-05-19 Thread muhali
The purpose is to clone an entire document into an empty new document.

To do so, I would select the document and paste the selection into the new
document, then load the style definitions from the original document (via
F11 - Load Styles..., all styles and Overwrite).

This reproduces everything except the outline numbering. What am I missing?

Re: [libreoffice-users] Issue install on a a Dell

2014-05-19 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
There are tons of unofficial sites, repos and magazine Cds/Dvds that offer
great bundles or pure versions of LibreOffice. it's very rare to find any
that create any kind of problem at all. The only thing is that since you
have found a problem it would be nice to try re-downloading from somewhere
we are familiar with and maybe even able to have some kind of control over.

Cley's point is good about checking the installer to ensure it's not been
corrupted somewhere along it's route. if it does turn out to be a 3rd
party error then they have probably done it unwittingly and just need
someone to write in to them and let them know so they can fix it. It's
more likely to be a home/small(ish)-office router that needs rebooting or
wiifi that needs a more line-of-sight position. Checkign the hash-values
sounds a lot scarier and more complex than it really is. I use a
calculator to take 1 value away from the other and hopefully get zero
showing everything is fine.

Tom :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] How to clone a document, including outline numbering?

2014-05-19 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
The problem with that way is that a ton of excess coding might be saved
right along with everything else.

I suspect the o.p. is trying to clean-up a document. Maybe not though in
which case your way is really simple and very quick.

When people send me stuff for my company's (well my boss's company)
newsletter is just paste everything in as unformatted text and then use
styles to make it fit in better. Occasionally i go in and apply direct
formatting to make numbered lists or bullet-points look right but mostly i
don't bother and that makes the whole thing look more consistent
internally. I jazz it up a bit with images but mostly the aim seems to be
to make it look boring. [shrugs]

Re: [libreoffice-users] Generating a odt file

2014-05-19 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Is xml a standarised struture? I thought that each implementation allowed
radical differences. Isn't it similar to css where definitions happen in
the header section, or even in a completely different file or maybe even
hard-coded into an app?

If xml is standarised as an ISO format then surely there wouldn't be much
need for standisations of the various implementations, such as MS's in
their OOXML?

Do you have to use Freemaker? It is possible to use LO in headless mode
so that it can run from a command line and perform repetitive actions on a
number of files without opening them in the usual gui. I dunno what
Freemaker does so i could easily be wrong here which is why i am just
asking if.

[libreoffice-users] Capitalizing Similar to Sentence Structure for Fields

Bug report says that it's not possible to insert a field and capitalize
like a sentence (ie. first word capitalized, everything else not).

Can someone take a look at this:

tell me if it's currently possible. It seems like it is but I figured

you list the steps (either to me, or on the bug report) on how to
accomplish this.

Thanks again,

Hi :)
Still, it's always good to give the simplest answers jic that really was
all you wanted. If nothing else it's good for the archives for people in
the future who might be really unclear about the finesses and detail.

Also it gets it out of the way and lets you know that your message has been
received by a live audience rather than vanished into the ether. It's
often tricky to get the balance right as many questions can be ambiguous or
weren't aware of some other idea that is possible with LO and maybe not so
possible with alternatives.

Anyway, welcome in and good to see you joining in. Hopefully Cor's answer
solves it?

Subject: [libreoffice-users] non-mainstream

Hi :)
Last week we had an interesting thread, at least i thought so, about how
most of us are probably on the aspergers/autism spectrum. About how that
might actually be a benefit despite being possibly mislabelled as a
'dis'ability. Sure, for some people it is too extreme and may be crippling
or maybe it's still a benefit for a lucky few who maybe worked hard to
make the most of it. Many of us have tiny amounts of it and even that is
sometimes just enough to set us outside of mainstream society.

At the end of the week i unwisely went to a pub with a friend who started
pointing out some of my eccentricities and physically held onto me to
prevent me from leaving. Errr she's quite a hot chick so it wasn't all bad
and when we go out i try to realise that almost all the glances and stares
we get are because of her. Just before disappearing inside myself i looked
around to reassure myself that everyone around me was different in their
ways but found just a sea of white faces and all dressed in a very similar
way to each other = nothing like me nor like almost any friend.

I'm guessing there are a lot of people here who feel 'outside' of
mainstream society for at least 1 reason or other. Here on the list i feel
safe because no-one can judge any one else on such randomness as skin
colour.

Do other people here feel like they are outside of a mainstream society in
a way that might show up in a photo or face-to-face? I think in a photo i
might look too mainstream. A static 2 dimensional image often misses a lot
of the character of a person. Would it be good to collect a bunch of
photos that show us using LibreOffice? Maybe focussing mostly on the
screen but enough of a hint of you or a friend that the photo gives an
impression of someone interesting. On the other hand maybe it is best that
we stick with the images we have of each other in our minds-eye?

I like the idea of a montage of different users so that almost anyone
looking at the montage might recognise something of themselves in one or
more of the people in the montage. If you email photos to me privately i
might be able to get a local artist to put it together. I would avoid
naming names unless you specifically tell me to include it.

The term 'mainstream' is quite flexible and might be very different in some
countries or amongst some cultures. If we look at the photos used in our
marketing then simply wearing a suit would make you stand out and it might
be good to see that sort of thing mixed in too.

Regards from
Tom :)

I may be completely confused, but if you're trying to clone a document
that originated in Word, then that makes things a little more
complicated. In my experience, Word and LO do outline numbering in
different ways and they don't translate well with each other.

in both cases you are running Ubuntu so that is something for the
devs/QA to go on.

Sorry I can't be any more help

Cheers

I'll see what happens with LO.
I have default preferences set; the downloads always go into the /Downloads
directory. No issues there with permissions and such things so far as I can
tell.

Hope this helps ...

I believe the outline numbering is controlled by the settings in the
Template being used when you open an empty new document. I don't think
it is controlled by paragraph styles.

It's controled by settings in Tools Outline numbering. And stored in a
document / template, but indeed not in styles.

Yes, that's how I understand it, and I think that's where I get
frustrated. When setting up outline numbering, I find myself putting
some settings in my styles and others in the outlining through Tools
Outline Numbering. Then the Outlining overrides my styles. Then if I
try to change a setting, something else changes. Sometimes I feel like
I'm putting together a spring-loaded toy and trying to keep it all

RE: [libreoffice-users] How to clone a document, including outline numbering?

2014-05-19 Thread Jeff Hahn

The solution I adopted is I created
separate files with the outline format I want (I have 4 files with
different formats). I made the outline as deep as possible so I
wouldn't have to update the format. When I am creating a new
document I copy and paste the outline into the new document and then
delete the extraneous material. It is cumbersome but it works for
me.

Subject: [libreoffice-users] Capitalizing Similar to Sentence Structure for
Fields

Hi All,

Bug report says that it's not possible to insert a field and capitalize
like a sentence (ie. first word capitalized, everything else not).

Can someone take a look at this:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=76463list_id=424995 and
tell me if it's currently possible. It seems like it is but I figured
I'd go to the user list and ask to see if anyone knows how. If so can
you list the steps (either to me, or on the bug report) on how to
accomplish this.

Thanks again,

Joel
