What You seem to be looking for is an auto-scaling feature which I
don't believe has been yet implemented.

Scientifically is correct that if you specify a range of x rows, the
graphic makes room for all af them, even if empty, because if they are
in the range, their data has to be considered (even null).

By the way it's an interesting point of view and could be suggested as
a new feature to be added as an option for instance, I think, because
it could be useful as well.

What I can tell You to solve this, for the moment, is to double click
into the graphic to go editing it, and then double click the Date's
axis. Now You can specify in the first Tab (Scale) the Maximum Value,
avoiding the Automatic Option. In this way it will render just the
portion of Data You'll need.

It still requires to edit the graphic, but I think it's surely better
and faster than having to modify the Data Values Area. And I think You
could do this once a quad, leaving not too much blank space at the end
of the graphic.

I really hope to have been useful for You and all people reading, and
also to have aimed a good solution without forgetting other ones which
could have been simpler.

2012/12/5 Joel Madero jmadero@gmail.com:
 Hi All,

I want to know if there's a way to make a chart range be an entire column
so that if I add data I don't have to manually alter the range. For
instance, every month I do expenses and the new row would be MM/ then
there's expenses and income listed, every time I add a new entry I have to
manually update the data range which is a hassle. If I select the entire
column as a data range it automatically adjusts to the last row with data.
Furthermore, if I just do a range that has like 10,000 extra rows (Maybe
A1:A1) the chart is squished (it doesn't auto adjust according to logic
of where last cell contains data and then update when new data is entered).

 Many thanks as always,
 Joel

This is the programmed behaviour. Whether, as a UI experience, it is
normal, is a matter of debate ;-)

The result set is cached, and the window display also caches part of the
result set to avoid performance penalties by not having to redraw all
elements of the window, hence the misleading information. Some work was
done recently in 3.6/3.7/4.0 development to improve this handling, but it
was mainly around the window refresh area from what I recall, as other
changes to the code had caused this bit to be even slower, and not refresh
at all, or at best take so long about it that the user got a blank screen
 :-/

So, at the moment, your best bet is probably to put in a request for
enhancement, after having tested on LO 3.6.x to see if there's any
 difference when compared to 3.5.x.

whereas the 3.6.3 was around 4th November. Both have been superseded by
more recent releases in their respective branches
 3.6.4 (equiv of Sp4) on 9th Dec
 3.5.7 (equiv of Sp7) on 14th Oct

It is good to try different versions so it's good to know the problem is not
in the 3.5.x branch and is just a fairly recent regression. If you are
happy to settle with the 3.5.6 that is fine but it would be helpful to know
if the bug is still in the 3.6.4. (There's no point in testing the 3.5.7)

Is there any simple way of importing a selection of Google contacts into

Re: [libreoffice-users] base + mailmerge difficulty

2015-06-27 Thread Gabriele Ponzo
The list doesn't allow attachments. Could you keep them on a xloud and link
here?

What i see is that you should prepare a query where you already have 14
results (even null) in a single record.
Il 26/giu/2015 18:06, Ed Beroset bero...@mindspring.com ha scritto:

I'm trying to print out schedules for students using mailmerge and have
encountered a problem that I haven't yet been able to solve. Here's what
 I've done so far.

I have created a simple embedded database (named school) in base and I
have three tables named Classes, Students and Schedules. Classes has three
fields: ClassID (which is the index), ClassTitle and CreditHours. The
Students table has StudentID (the index), LastName and FirstName. The
Schedules table has PairID (the index) and StudentID and ClassID.

Students and Classes are just what you'd expect. Each record in the
Schedules table links one student and one class. A schedule is the
collection of all classes for a particular student. I have created a
simple query for the Schedules table:

 SELECT Schedules.StudentID StudentID, Students.LastName
 LastName, Students.FirstName FirstName, Schedules.ClassID
 ClassID, Classes.ClassTitle ClassTitle, Classes.CreditHours
CreditHours FROM Schedules Schedules, Students Students,
 Classes Classes WHERE Schedules.StudentID = Students.StudentID
 AND Schedules.ClassID = Classes.ClassID ORDER BY StudentID,
 ClassID

All of that works just fine and I've also created a simple report that
uses the query, which also works as expected.

Now what I want to do is to create a separate schedule document for each
student. I'm attempting to use mailmerge to do that. I have a simple .ott
file which has Schedule for FirstName LastName in the header and then
a table in the body of the document. It has a header and about 14 rows
(the maximum number of classes I expect) and then a final row which has a
formula which calculates the total number of credit hours.

When I select and filter one individual student, the schedule prints just
fine, but if I try to generate all of them, it doesn't work as I want.
Specifically, it picks up the first student's name but then it populates
the table with the next 14 classes in the query, whether or not this
*particular* student is taking that class or not. Each page is filled with
14 classes until we get to the end of the list.

Each row of the table includes the three fields and then a Next record
which is probably where my problem lies. The condition is set to TRUE.
Somewhat schematically, each line looks like:

 school.Query_Schedules.ClassID school.Query_Schedules.ClassTitle
 school.Query_Schedules.CreditHours Next record:school.Query_Schedules

Any clues would be most welcome. I'm quite new to LibreOffice and my SQL
skills are very rusty, but I'd love to learn more about both if it helps me
 solve this problem!

Also, attached is a small zip file with both the database and template if
 you'd like to try.

 Thanks!

 Ed

Re: [libreoffice-users] lost opportunity

2015-11-05 Thread Gabriele Ponzo
Marianne, it's really strange since I use to install LO on a daily basis on
M$ Windows as well, and not having any issue.

I don't know if it's a mirrored files issue or if it's something on -that-
computer, as it happens now and then that Windows has strange (at least)
behaviors.

My suggestion is to to have a Pen Drive dedicated to software installations
and deployments with tested files on which you can rely on. This way gives
you the sureness that the problem is on the customer's computer side.

Anyway I believe it's not all lost since at least she'll be using ODF
format and whenever You'll want to try convincing her to migrate to LO, the
impact will be much softer. The most is done when leaving M$O.

I hope to have been helpful somehow, at least for the future.

Bye.

As written, more than a Vista & LO issue (which can happen anyway) I tend
to believe to some LO & some other vendor's bundled stuff issue.

them, and each of them worked, and worked well.

Or, indeed, maybe also some malware or virus is corrupting images
downloaded.
Did you try MD5 checksum? And what about downloading via Torrent?

By the way, just for curiosity, what was the error returned by the
installer?

That should be the last reason to choose Open Source Software… I can
understand it, since it was the same for me in the far 90's, but sooner or
later you should go deeper and try understanding the principles behind OSS.

Well, maybe you'll find a free "product" that suites your needs, possibly
not open, so that you'll be locked in its own encoding cage.

Please respect people of the community and avoid insulting with your

Did you mean the vertical spacing among lines or the horizontal among

If you started with "plain text" why doors it have such a (double?) spacing?

What is unclear is if you don't want to receive mails about your question
or if you don't want to receive mails at all.

Because you may have not understood that this is a mailing list. So you'll
receive every message from very each sender about every topic, unless you
decide to unsubscribe.

In that case, you may find instructions for that at botom of each message.

I hope to have been clear and helpful.

All the best.

Re: [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice Damaged

2015-09-11 Thread Gabriele Ponzo
You mentioned 4 LO versions. From what I know on Windows it's not possible
to install more than one unless you use a specific software which name i
can't recall at the moment.

So the question is: why do you have so many version installed? And how did
you install them?

Re: [libreoffice-users] Need help To convert Excel Sheet to Libre sheet

2015-09-10 Thread Gabriele Ponzo
What's your problem specifically?

Unless there are macros, usually it's enough to open LibreOffice Calc and
let it open the excel file. Then save it in odf (.ods) format.

Let is know of there are troubles with these steps, and please report
specific problems.

All the best.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Need urgent support in Libreoffice writer integration

2015-11-18 Thread Gabriele Ponzo
It is possible via the command line with --headless option.
What you found should be still valid today.

By the way, as Pedro said, this is community mailing list. Thus help is
given on a volunteer basis.
If you need professional and quick support you should consider a paid
service indeed.

There are also other businesses and professionals available, as CIB or
Studio Storti for example.

You can get a list of certified people and companies here:

Re: [libreoffice-users] [BUG] Problem manifesting in sum function

2016-06-10 Thread Gabriele Ponzo
This list doesn't allow attachments, so please put it on some temporary
internet storage service.

I guess that all the values in the formula are stored in cells like let's
say:
A1 stores t1
A2 stores t2
A3 stores t
A4 store c
A5 stores k
Would it be correct?

By the way please remember to always supply the operating system you are
working on, the bits of it and of LibreOffice (may differ in Windows).

I'd like to try but I'll have to find a LO 4.4.3.2 (which probably is still
the default for Ubuntu 14.04?)

Just because in a spreadsheet EVERYTHING is a field and there are so many
values you can recall that it's impossible to list them in a contextual
menu.

As reported you may insert them easily in heading or bottom of printing
area, where makes more sense to have such common fields as the current date.

I guess the button you pressed is the mirrored P one.

In this case it looks really a weird behavior.

What version of LO are you using?

Sometimes I had such problems too, but with Tab symbol...

Another thing you could try to check is on the settings (CMD + ,): there is
a section where you can specify what to see and what not when you activate
the "non printable symbols" functionality.

If I'm not wrong, this mailing list shouldn't accept attachments.

So you should put it on some server and then share the link :(

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: limited undo.

2016-09-03 Thread Gabriele Ponzo
To be honest, I believe that a proper use of Writer could avoid this
"problem".

What I mean is that probably it could be enough to delete word by word,
using CTRL key together with BackSpace or Delete key. In this way it should
take one step of undo per each word, instead of a single character.

Also consider selecting and THEN delete. For example you could use Shift
with Home and End keys or with CTRL and arrows keys...

Word processing IS NOT exactly like using a typewriter ;)

This seems to be the "word completion" utility. See at Tools → Autocorrect
→ Autocorrect options and on the last tab disable the autocompletion.

By the way it can be a really useful feature. To use it, you just have to
press ENTER to confirm the suggested word or continue typing if that's not
what you need. (Or probably you can press ESC too, I can't remember and
I'm on the smartphone now). Please consider learning the keyboard use:
you'll see that many more things can be done and about 10 times faster ;)

I've never experienced such a behaviour in any platform (Linux, Mac or

Re: [libreoffice-users] Indendet paragraphs with names, hints or comments at the left side?

2017-08-15 Thread Gabriele Ponzo
What Ricardo reported is something I never miss to teach at my trainings.

I add that the tabulation is not required as the paragraph margin (3cm in
that example) is an implicit tabulation itself.

Lists function uses the same technique, since automation can't invent magic
solutions but just do something you could do manually.

Anyway the idea of customizing list to have a name for each level is really
interesting indeed.

In that way you could just switch among people with tabulations and avoid
to write their names every time.

I hope to remember it when I'll have some time to test it!

Re: [libreoffice-users] [calc] Get a list of conditional formattings

2017-07-08 Thread Gabriele Ponzo
I'm on the smartphone at the moment, but I'm quite sure the UI does list
the conditional formatting existing on a sheet or in a file.

It should be in a specific sub menu item to manage such feature.

I clearly remember from my last lessons (I'm a teacher of LO) that there is
a dialog window showing them all.

Isn't it enough for your need?

Consider also using master documents (.odm). Its styles overrides the one

From what I can remember (I'm writing from smartphone), when the template
selector is open, the default type is the same of the file you were
editing, but in the combo box there are all other types, including a
specific "all" item at the top, if I'm not wrong.

It's really strange...

The quickest way I see could be applying apex formatting to the number, but
it's not a final solution.
What if you try with a new document?

You didn't mention the Operating System present on the old laptop, but as
Italo wrote, if it's able to run 6.4.0 it will likely run 6.4.6 as well.

This is really weird, because page styles are in LibreOffice (Writer, I
guess you meant) from its first version, if I'm not wrong (but I'm pretty
sure of that).

You should find them under Format menu, or pressing F11 key.

If you open "win" folder, you'll find "x86" and "x86_64" subfolders, where
the first is 32bit. For instance have a look here:

So Win7 (if you applied SP1) should be fine even for the last version.

You already have the answer, as you have used the YEAR function in your

So YEAR(cell) will give you just the year from the date expressed in "cell".

What version of Windows? And what of LibreOffice?
Does it happen with any other software?

Let us know here or on Italian list :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] Prevent Template Name Appearing in Document Title [SOLVED]

Wow, I'm really glad to have been helpful, even in an indirect way like
this :)

Thank you for watching!

Re: [libreoffice-users] My Question About Security

2022-01-27 Thread Gabriele Ponzo
Your file is safe as long as it stays on your computer, but if you use some
Cloud storage such as OneDrive, DropBox or any other, we cannot grant it's
security.
And anyway, LibreOffice (usually) does not encrypt files. But yes, it does
not send them anywhere either, unless you ask it to do that.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Adding Time in hours

2023-05-25 Thread Gabriele Ponzo
CTRL+1 opens the Cell Format dialog window. There, in "numbers" tab, you
have to choose "Time" on the left panel and the 4th format on the centre
panel ("876613:37:46" corresponding to [HH]:MM:SS format code).

That's it, it's not related to LibreOffice Calc but to SpreadSheets' usage
in general :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] Can't open new version of LO

2024-04-02 Thread Gabriele Ponzo
Otherwise, at the end of the Download page, you can still choose a previous
version (like the one that was working for you, or one in the middle
between that one and the latest), download it and install it.

https://www.libreoffice.org/download/download-libreoffice/

If the version you'd like is not listed, there's also an "in the archive"
link, pointing at this page:
https://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/

There you can find ALL LO versions, from the very beginning of the project.

BUT before doing that, I'd suggest to check if currently installed version
is compatible with Windows 7 and in that case try running it in safe mode:
https://help.libreoffice.org/latest/en-US/text/shared/01/profile_safe_mode.html

I hope it has been useful, good luck.
