It seems to me that is the same faulty assumption that has made people so frustrated with MS Word; the software publisher decide what people want and sets the defaults accordingly. Every time I load a fresh install of LibO, the first thing I have to do is go into Autocorrect and disable nearly all of the options. I think it would make more sense for the default install to have Autocorrect disabled and allow the user to enable it as desired. But think of the consequences. Remember that most users of any software use only a small subset of its capabilities. If automatic correction was hidden by default, many (most?) users would never know it existed. The fact that you can describe having to disable the parts you don't like shows that you have learned at least of the existence of the facility. I hope that's true of most users. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: OpenOffice to be dumped in Freiburg ?
What a discussion has been started. Great! As for doing revers engineering on binary files, I know how difficult it is. However, it is not impossible. Should the great devs of AOO and LibO be enabled to join forces, there is a tremendous know-how and manpower available. I just hope that people in both organizations start thinking about joining forces and act ASAP. EU and the law suit is definitely something which can help us. This reminds me to discussions on highest management level in a multinational company of some 8000 - 1 employees world wide. Management was not very happy with the way MS used their power. This means that also larger corporations could switch to a highly bug free LibO. As for new features of MSO and an productivity increase in large corporation it is actually close to zero. The introduction of ribbons caused a huge productivity loss in large corporations and cost a lot of money for ribbon training. Such a switch could also be accelerated by MS new policy to offer their products on subscription base. Huge regular bills will be eye-catchers... I keep fingers crossed and will contribute when I can do so. Re: [libreoffice-users] Book Preview button in Print Preview Screen
Although I am not writing books the feature described by CVAlkan is a very interesting one. Especially if the settings could be made on a document base, rather than general. This is, of course, quite useful for reviewing layouts more realistically. Since that is what I'm creating, I would like to set the Book Preview as the default for the Print Preview display (yes, I acknowledge my laziness, but isn't the fact that I use a word processor instead of a typewriter sufficient proof of that?); it would be even cooler if that display choice could be set on a per-document basis as well, but I don't want to be too greedy. I've searched around, but haven't run across anything that would allow me to do that. Does anyone know if such a setting exists and, if so, how to set it? Otherwise, I guess I'll just toss it in at the bottom of the massive list of requested enhancements. Re: [libreoffice-users] ... not working ...
I don't mean that a single manager makes all decisions and the team has to follow. The word manager could and should be understood also as management team, decision making team, leadership, etc. I am not familiar with the structure of the dev team and decision making processes. Thus, I used simply manager. At the end it is the dev team bringing LO forward. Let me repeat myself, but I respect these people a lot and I am very grateful for all the work they did and do. On 18.10.2012 16:44, Tom Davies wrote: Hi :) +1 I think that it's precisely because we see so much great development being done that we get excited about it and want more. Also the fact that people can post bug-reports and even non-coders opinions do get listened makes us feel like we can off-load. So, a lot of the criticisms are not necessarily about LO specifically but about IT in general. ROSt talks about management decisions and hints about those being imposed on a workforce because that's the easier way for most of us on the Users List to understand it. I suspect that most of us either do now or have at some point worked in traditional offices in mainstream management structures. In LO i imagine the equivalent is leadership rather than management. Inspiration and initiative rather than just following orders. Personal investment and interest in achieving goals. It is leading to some impressive results. For my understanding the concerns and opinions expressed here are more related to the ratio of devs being allocate to new features versus bug fixes. I think most of us also understand that first the number of devs is limited, and second the decision on how many devs on new features and how many on bug fixes is not an easy one. It is a management decisions, which can turn out right or wrong. And for management decisions one needs a lot of information. Speaking for myself I would regard these comments as additional information. In this sense, please regard the messages in this forum as additional information, which could.should help decision makers to make decisions. And should a decision turn out to be wrong, there is no problem in changing course. The worst thing a manager can do is, not to make a decision. Without decision there is no change to the situation and thus no chance for improvement. Let me thank here again all devs doing great jobs in developing and improving LO. ROSt Maybe I take C++ classes when I retire LO would be worth to do. On 18.10.2012 14:36, Joel Madero wrote: Let alone regressions which are just accepted as a part of software development. Ultimately, mistakes happen, and when a software code base has been transferred left and right and had a ton of people randomly working on it (which is exactly what happens with open source software), a lot of the job of a developer coming onto the project is just playing catch up and guessing and what a previous developer was attempting to do. Again, I highly suggest taking a few C++ classes and then it'll become apparent that the idea that we should stop everything and get every single bug squashed (5,000), is not a realistic stance. We should and we are (I guarantee this) doing everything in our power to prioritize bugs and take care of those bugs that are a) most annoying b) affecting the most users c) resulting in data loss We are a young project and this is a goal that has been set. Being young, this is a goal, not a fact. If you're interested in seeing how much work is done on a daily basis, just follow gerrit (our code tracker), or sit in IRC and look at the incredibly brilliant conversations that happen to find solutions to many of the problems that are being reported. Just to give another point, we are averaging more than 5 new reports PER DAY. Our QA team is a group of volunteers no more than 7 or 8 strong. Each of these bugs has to go through a long process just to verify, ensure that it's not a duplicate, communicate with the user who reported it, and then priortize it. That's JUST getting the bug confirmed, then it gets put into the stack where a very small group of dedicated developers tackle them, one by one. A single bug can take a week + to tackle (that's 40+ hours). Let's say the average bug takes 10 hours (a massive understatement), that's 50,000 hours worth of work to tackle the 5,000 or so confirmed bugs. Seeing these off hand remarks about how we should develop the product is disheartening. I wish that more people would take a class at their local community college, or take a

The first implies that they will ask you to potentially violate a contract or, worse, the law. The second implies they are stupid and are very cavalier about protecting corporate assets. Under US labor law asking the question potentially allows the employer to find out information that they can not legally ask in an interview. This is the primary legal challenge to the question that is an implicit illegal question by the employer. I can truthfully say I do not know my Facebook or virtually any other password because I use a password manager to generate and store them. And I am not in the habit of carrying the file and the manager around on a USB stick. Great ways out of troubles! Re: [libreoffice-users] Indexing for Search not working?
Yes, I think we both (and I am sure that there are many more) want the same thing: LO being successful and known as the best Office package and available also for people who just cannot afford to buy an Office package. I also understand that devs are easier to get for programming new features because this frontier work. I can understand this very well because I used to work on frontier work myself for many years. However, I also learned that things must be made stable. My business now is nothing else but making operations stable. Coming from that point of view I only can encourage devs to put in all their pride in getting LO branches stable ASAP. I feel good when I get an operation stable and a dev can feel the same way. It might even be harder to get bugs out because it must first be understood what causes the bug. If I would learn about a dev who removed a bug I reported, I thank him personally! (If there is a list where I can see it, I appreciate a lot information on where such a list is published on the web.) I can not contribute more than bug reporting. I do this for all bugs I find and which I can document somehow. It takes me a lot of time - a loss in my productivity - but I am willing to do so. My small contribution to the LO project which I like. Currently I only can do this for my production version (3.5.6.2). But I would actually like to run 2 versions on my PC: a stable one with almost no bugs, and a newer one with new features and bugs. (This idea was expressed already by Tom, anne-ology and maybe some other as well.) By doing so I can use time for searching bugs in the newer version, and when I am very busy (= I need a high productivity) I can just use the stable version. For me such a possibility would push the LO project forward at very high speed. The success of SW is a combination of features and stability (= productivity increase). This means the right balance is needed. The right balance of dev power for new feature compared to dev power to fix bugs is the trick task which need to be done. On 17.10.2012 18:51, Tom Davies wrote: Hi :) I think we both want the same thing. The question is how to get it. 1. How to encourage new devs to join? At the moment we show LO as an exciting projects for devs to get involved with and quickly see the results of their work getting out there into the real world. As a result they are likely to get into fixing any unexpected problems or side-issues that might have cropped up. 2. We need a stable branch where new stuff never gets added, just fixes back-ported from the newer, more exciting branch. That is pretty much what we have already. By the time the newer branch reaches around .4 then it's usually stable enough for everyone = about as stable as the .6 or .7 of the older branch but with better compatibility with non-native formats and some interesting things. If some of us helped the devs more by posting bug-reports earlier then we might be able to help them push that stability in earlier. We might start finding the 3. or even the .2 starts to be the one stable enough to migrate our colleagues and co-workers to as well as ourselves instead of having to wait for the .4. It's on us more than the devs. They are working hard and need our support rather than our criticism. Do we want to push devs away unless they only get involved with boring dry stuff and no reward, no chance of showing off prowess, no chance of getting recognition out there? I like people in here too. I also enjoy arguing with people i like and respect that have a good point of view and a good way of looking at the world. I usually take good points from here and then argue in favour of them on the marketing list because you have very valid points here. We do need an LTS because these frequent upgrades and uncertainty are just not possible when you have more than a handful of computers to maintain or have limited download, or Well, tons of valid reasons Regards from Tom :) --- On Wed, 17/10/12, Dr. R. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Problem happen when import text with Chinese
I made a test I did before (maybetooo long time before) and reported today a bugBug55954-EDITING: copypaste issues - Japanese text from writer into calcWhat I remember from my previous test( I used LO 3.5.4 or 3.5.5)is thatI got what is called in Japanese mojibake and can be imaged as wingding symbols, thus unreadable characters. This time with LO 3.5.6.2 at least all characters where correct. For Scott to compare what I did in the test with what he did during his import process here the bug report:beginProblem description:copypaste of Japanese text from writer to calc shows inconsistency opf the paste results depending on the paste methode (pasting directly into cells or pasting into the input line). Details are to be seen in the attached files. Steps to reproduce: 1. copy a Japanese text in writer 2. paste directly into a cell in calc creates a too small font neither matching the font in writer nor default in calc, color is black 3. paste into the input line creates the same font result but color is gray. 4. when increasing the font size in calc overlapping of Japanese characters occure depending on the width of the column (this can be seen in the attached calc sheet when changing the column width) Current behavior:As described aboveThe same issue should appear with all double byte word languages (Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai etc...) Expected behavior:when pasting Japanese from writer into calc the font should be as in writer or as the default font in calc (type, size, color) Platform (if different from the browser): LO 3.5.6.2 / XP SP3 Browser: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:16.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/16.0end !-- @page { margin: 2cm } P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } --On 11.10.2012 23:26, scott0711 wrote: Thanks Tom: Ihe picture which i posted was made this afternoon, Taiwan time. Re: [libreoffice-users] MS problems
I think the market share of MSO has nothing to do with the users being idiots or not. The 90% share is caused by 3 things 1 - When you buy a PC you often get the MSO already pre-installed 2 - Not many people know about alternatives. I only learned about OO and LO from my brother who is a IT wizard. While talking to people about me utilization of LO I am always experiecing that almost all people do not know about OO or LO or other packages. 3 - Many IT departments in companies choose MSO because it is easily available and they consider the support as good. Keep in mind that introduction of an alternative suit requires a lot of testing in an IT department. The suit must be stable and keep productivity high. If my above statements are wrong, then I am happy because I converted from MSO to LO, thus from an idiot to something else... Re: [libreoffice-users] need help applying standard layouts to master pages.
I understand now Alessandro's situation - at least I assume. I also had the same problem when I created my own template - and still have for next templates I need to make. I wanted to have a title master and 1 slide master. The master view allows currently only 1 master layout (title, content). Using this I could create my own kind of title master, however it is not very good and rather cumbersome to make. Therefore I also would appreciate if master slides could have at least a proper title slide layout. From my point of view this would be sufficient. However, a few more to mach Alessandro would be better and easier to work with. If Dan could take such and enhancement request to the dev-team I appreciate this a lot.. There are three terms that are used interchangeable: slide master, master side, and master page. When modifying a master slide, you can't directly apply default layouts to it. Re: [libreoffice-users] custom shows within a slide show - impress
As promised here the information on how I created a work-around. Copied slides for custom shows into a special section of the presentation after the last slide of the main presentation. Created a text (name of a custom show) and used interaction with go to page. Used slide 1 of the custom show as target. At the last slide of the custom show I added the text return. Using interaction go to page and jumped back to the page from where I started the custom show. Disadvantage against MSO: - One needs to create an interaction to return; in MSO one can just flag return to start (or similar) - The slide from which one jumps to the custom show will start from the beginning. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: calc
I indeed understood that you want to show the y-value of every fifth x-value. However, it seems you don't want to stick with the pattern but want to be more flexible. In general a graph displayes the correlation between a series of x-values and their related y-values. The x-axis is in any spreedsheet is a continuum of cells. If your dataset has more x-values as you want to show in the chart, then a selection of data needs to be made in a way that you have at the end of continuum of cells for the x-values. Therefore a manual selection made or a smart formular or macro needs to be made to create this continuum of cells filled with x-values which you want to show in your chart. Here is a last idea, which could possibly be of use. Create the chart with the full set of data you have. Select the bars you want to show. Change the color of these bars to put emphasis on them. Im afraid there is not such a solution you are looking for. Charts in general are based on a defined data range for the x-axis where all data on this range are includeded. But you want to make a data selection using a chart. You real task, the seclection of data (your x-axis data) is one step before making a chart. I am afraid you have to do this manually or using a selecting criteria which allows you to pick up every 5th set of data and create a new x-axis with the relevant data on for the y-axis. As you have only a data set of 35 and need to select only 7 data sets, I would simply do this manually. It's a 5 minute job. Right click on the chart select data range select data series select categories and expand the range here. You can keep the new cells empty or continue from 10 to where you want to go. Re: [libreoffice-users] custom shows within a slide show - impress
Hi and thanks for the first reply. I intend to show the custom show depending on the discussion in my (main) presentation. Imagine following sequence: - In my presentation I am showing slide N, - Because and only because of the discussion I want to show 2 slides additionally and then return to my slide N. (I grouped these 2 slides in a custom show and call it CustShow.) - Now I want to click on text or button to open the CustShow. - After the last slide of the CustShow I want to show again slide N of the (main) presentation. I keep the slides for my custom shows at the end of my main presentation in a section I call LinkedSlides In Impress I looked into interaction and hyperlink but could not find a way to show CustShow and return to my slide N from where I wanted to branch. Let me please also explain what I did in In MS PowerPoint:before I switched over to LO - created a custom show - created a text box or button at the slide from where I wanted to start the custom show - hyperlinked text box (or button) with the custom show and set a flag to return to the starting slide in the main presentation. If instead you're referring to placing a slide show within a slide show, then just add the additional slides where you wish them to appear. If neither, then please explain further. Re: [libreoffice-users] bug search and replace in half height window
I tested in LibreOffice 3.5.6.2 writer-Window approx. half of the screen in height, in width about 90%. Document is 22 pages with text and tables (tables are html-copies of calc-tables), page orientation: portrait for most, and landscape for a few pages, Searching for a word with an appearance of about 10 times showed always the right text and search word position until the last page. Re: [libreoffice-users] Changing backgrounds on slides regularly
Possible solution: create a new presentation open master create your 12 back grounds close master save as template create new presentation based on this template select View / Task pane (or Ctrl+shift+T) / master pages in the top part (Used in This Presentation) you see all 12 created back grounds (=master slides) select what you want to use for your next slide have fun ROSt On 2012-09-07 18:28, udippel wrote: Our organisation requires us to use a specific template. This template consists of 12 backgrounds that are to be used one after the other with consecutive slides. When the number is up, the presentation should start again with the first background of the set; so to say in a circular manner. The easy (and boring) workaround is to click slide after slide and then background after background. And when one has 27 slides, this IS boring. And when I duplicate slide 12, I need to redo the same thing for slides 13 to 28. I have not been able to find a solution for this task. Can anyone help me out, please?
