Oh well, keep it simple, there is always Markdown which is a supported
filetype. Not sure if the Markdown plugin still works, but if it does

rather than work on the Python module its best to use one of the many
programs that convert markdown rather than trying to run a Python

There is no hard limit, its totally resource limited.
You don't say what Geany version,
Syntax highlighting is provided by the lexers from the Lexilla
project. If you can find an existing lexer that will do what you want
you can use it in your custom filetype.
If not you will have to create your own lexer in C++ (probably by
modifying an existing one).

respond to the GTK CSS.
But as the editor window has differing styling per syntactic element
recognised for each programming language supported, standard GTK CSS
just won't cut it.
The editor widget is from the Scintilla
Keybindings are stored in `keybindings.conf` in your config directory, but
I'm interested in why you need to keep defining the items repeatedly, once
set they should be stored there by Geany and reloaded each use?

Opening a new tab in a running instance is the default behaviour,
there is something going wrong if it doesn't work. Look in
`help->debug messages` after it opens a new instance.

Did you save the buffer as a file with a name?
The abaqus command probably only operates on files, it can't see
unsaved buffers.
Also the command you showed is not what is the default command:
abaqus job="%f" interactive datacheck
Not sure if that is a typo in the email.
