Ich habe die gleiche Version unter Linux Mint laufen, die Menüs sind sehr
gut lesbar. Wir sind übrigens keine profitorientierte Firma, Ihr Ton

There were pieces of an old version of OpenOffice lurking in my system.

removed them and reinstalled OpenOffice (from https://www.openoffice.org/)

Ahh... that was it.
It was warning against another version with almost exactly the same name
and noted some issues with it. For that reason it recommended downloading
from the OO website to avoid picking the wrong app.

Mac has a program called Time Machine. It is installed on Mac from the
factory since macOS 10.5
If it is set to do backups, then check in Time Machine for your file.
This Apple webpage has basic instructions for Time Machine.
