Autocorrect.
I don't know if it is/was publicly distributed, but there was an
Afrikaans autocorrect that had a number of Afrikaans words, written
without the diacritic marks, that would automatically correct
themselves. Possibly the most usefully was the " n " that was
automatically replaced by " ʼn ".

Along those lines, I also saw a proposal for South African place names
to be added. Type in the old name, and it replaced it with the new name,
and in parenthesis had "formerly place-name". I don't know if that
proposal was ever implemented.

Nando's #RightMyName has yet to make it to Apache OpenOffice.

Apache Open Office is works program. This means that Calc, Writer,
Draw, Impress, and Math are built into it, and removing one component
would remove functionality from all components.

If Apache Open Office opens files that you would prefer to have opened
by WordPad, then reconfigure the operating system to do that.

Apache Open Office offers official support via a web forum
(https://forum.openoffice.org) and a mailing list (
users@openoffice.apache.org). Support via IRC, Telegram, and similar
channels of communication is available, albeit as unofficial support.
These are the standard Tier Zero support channels.

If you want phone support, then you need to purchase phone support from
a third party vendor. A list of vendors providing professional support
can be found at https://www.openoffice.org/bizdev/consultants.html

Phone support is a Tier One support channel, which, for most products
and services, requires one to specifically purchase.

OpenOffice is free for use by everybody. You may take this copy of
OpenOffice and install it on as many computers as you like, and use it
for any purpose you like (including commercial, government, public

My personal recommendation is to have a solicitor review
* the license of all of the software that is used by the organization,
to ensure that:
** all software is used with the appropriate license;
** each license is adhered to;
* the hardware, software, and related IT contracts the organization has
made, to ensure that:
** all software is either covered, or known to be deliberately excluded;
** all hardware is either covered, or known to be deliberately excluded;
** all IT contracts are clearly defined in terms of scope, cost, and
duration;
* all warranties provided with hardware, software, or services obtained
by the organization to ensure that the hardware, software, or service
usage complies with the warranty requirements.

In the United States, it is not uncommon that:
* installation of unapproved software terminates a software support
contract (^1);
* installation of unapproved hardware terminates a hardware support
contract;
* installation of third party hardware voids the hardware warranty;
* installation of third party software voids the hardware warranty;
* installation of unapproved hardware voids the hardware warranty;
* installation of unapproced software voids the hardware warranty;

^1: As oft as not, payment for support services yet to be rendered, is
still required. In rare instances, an early termination fee can be
substituted. (I'm aware of one organization that had both an early
termination fee, and required payment for future services not rendered,
to be paid in full.)

Segoe appears to be distributed by Microsoft, INC. As such, you'd have

Neither Apache Open Office nor The Apache Foundation have anything to do

I'd recommend taking printouts of all licenses and contracts that are
related to the project, and have that lawyer go through them, to ensure
that using AOo will be kosher. I've come across a couple of contracts

I haven't examined the code base of the two projects, but based upon the
way the various extensions function, I suspect that the code base of the
two projects has diverged enough, that code has to be specifically
written for each project.

IOW, a patch for one project will have no effect when integrated into
the other project, unless it is rewritten. Whether or not looking at the
code that fixed in a bug in one project, will provide a useful algorithm
to fix the same bug in the other project, is useful, depends upon a
plethora of unrelated factors.

The other hurdle is that the two projects use different licenses.
Whether or not they are compatible is something best left for the
lawyers to decide.

if turned on, the backup file is saved in wherever you have designated
your backup file to be. The default name of the backup folder is
"backup". The default location is in user profile folder.

I've forgotten where the crash protection file is saved to. :(
AFIAK, it is not saved in either the same folder as the original
document, nor in the backup folder, but in a third location.

> If there's a crash protection file, why would the user be required to turn it
> on?

Crash recovery doesn't always recover the correct document. There was,
and for all I know still is, a bug that is incredibly difficult to
diagnose, that causes both backup, and crash recovery to fail, depending
upon how one configures various other user-changeable settings. (The
simple fix was to turn off both auto backup, and crash recovery,, and if
the program did crash, decline the recovery process. However, this fix
does require one to save the file at frequent intervals --- at least
once every five minutes, if not more frequently.)

>When you restart OO after a crash, does it ask if you want to recover
the file?

Yes.

#

The ideal solution would be for somebody who groks both AOo and SVN to
fix the bugs in OOo-SVN, so that it automatically saves files every #
minutes. Ideally, part of the bug-fixing would be an automated install
of SVN, such that non-programmers don't have to do anything but click
one button "Yes, Install SVN", or "No, Cancel Operation".

The typical MSO Template with an MSRP in the US$400 price range, whilst

If it isn't, then the simplest way to correct it, is to modify the

IMNSHO, manually inserting is begging for style / layout issues. Much

Whether or not a new page style is needed for each even page, depends
upon the source of the headers. If it were, say, chapter headings, then
only two page styles are needed --- LeftPage and RightPage.

If every even page needs its custom, non-sourceable header, then a page
style for each page _might_ be needed. This is doable, but extremely
tricky. Anybody going this route needs to think long and hard about why
each page needs a custom, non-sourceable header, before tackling it.

If one is experienced at constructing page styles, it will take between
10 and 20 attempts, to get the pages to flow correctly. If one is not
experienced with creating page styles, then budget at least 500
attempts, to get the pages to look the way they should, and flow
smoothly into each other. IOW, this is not for the feint-hearted.

OOoLilyPOnd, obtainable from

to work than MuseScore Manager.

I wouldn't be surprised if the _LibreOffice SongBook Architect_

Have you looked at the price difference between B and 4 colour
printing? For this specific usage --- hearts and diamonds in red --- is
it worth the roughly six cents per page price difference?

For ebook formats (PDF, epub, mobi, fb2, etc) the major issue with
colour is that most e-ink screens don't display them properly. For
non-e-ink devices, colour is rendered correctly. As such, colouring
hearts and diamonds in red is a non-issue.

> No conventional publisher would touch it with a barge pole.

The organization that hired you to write the material is the publisher.
As such, what is needed is a printer, not a publisher.

Personally, for POD I'd rather go with Ingram Spark for non-Amazon
sales, holding off on CreateSpace until Amazon's non-stocking policy
makes using it imperative. On the flipside, IngramSpark mandates that
one knows exactly what one is doing, whilst CreateSpace mandates that
one be utterly clueless.

Character Styles.
Create one for Red Suites and one for Black Suites.

Write your document using your usual character style. When finished,
write a macro that searches for each heart, and applies the Red Suite
character style to it, then change that macro so search for each
diamond, to apply the Red Suite character style to it. Then modify it
to search for each spade, and apply the Black Suite character style to
it, then change it to search for each club, applying the Black Suite
character style.

> Secondary question: Is there any such thing as a 'reveal codes' option

If you modify the formatting toolbar appropriately, the formatting
changes are displayed there, as one moves through the document. That is
about as close to usable Reveal Codes functionality as you'll find for AOo.

By the time OOo 1.0 was released, the User Interface of that email

That is more or less the point of the Apache Software Foundation.

Apache OpenOffice is distributed under _The Apache License, Version

For how local law affects the requirements of that license, consult a

The "Free" of "Free Software" refers to Libre, not Gratis. As such, if

IIRC, WK4 support in LibreOffice is through a third party extension ---

Page Styles
By default, page style "First Page" does no have headers or footers.
Use that page style for the first seven pages.

Page styles "Left Page" and "Right Page", by default, do not have
headers or footers. Enable headers ">Insert >Headers and Footers

Try John The Ripper, available from http://www.openwall.com/john/.

I don't what the data is based upon, but the claim is that if it doesn't
recover the password within 90 days, it will take several decades for
the password to be recovered.

Using a standard desktop, the formula for determining how long it takes
to brute force the password is:
( n ^ PL ) / 1,000,000 = time in seconds.

For a small Beowulf cluster, the formula is
( n ^ PL ) / 99,000,000,000 = time in seconds.

where
* n is password cardinality. This is also known as the size of the
symbol space. Rephrasing, the number of letters in the case of the
writing systems that are used;
* PL is password length;

FYI, this is why passwords in Hebrew are inherently less secure than
passwords in English, which in turn, are less secure than passwords in
Russian.

https://app.box.com/s/aobyrwv0w33v2hxskfjtwjcvq14sovau
has a spreadsheet that calculates approximate password strength, and how
long it will take to brute force.
(Somebody else can clean it up, and toss it into a template repository.)

Typically, that happens when one uses a non-default font that is bigger
than the default. To compensate for that adjust heights at >Format >Row
>Optimal Height adjustment. If that (larger than default font) is the
cause, then it will only need to be done once.

I've forgotten which fonts don't play nicely with Calc. As a general
rule, these fonts break several conventions in creating glyphs. (Too
little white space at the edges, is the most common problem.)

> I asked about a possible method to freeze the row's height

I use a spreadsheet for my passwords, and have never encountered the
situation you describe.

The biggest problem I've encountered, was when OOo changed encryption
routines. I had to save the spreadsheet without a password, to be able
to use it on my different computers. Since all my computers are now
running the same version of the same office suite, I can encrypt that
spreadsheet, without any issues.

You can setup address books for Thunderbird.
However, the file format used for address books is defiantly not human

versions of Firefox, oldish versions of SeaMonkey, Thunderbird, and,

On the page "IQ" is one solution to generating a sequence of random
numbers, without duplicating any numbers. For your specific use-case,
change the random number multiplier to 69, from whatever the formula

In essence, you need to add one column, for every row that is added.

Contact the organization(s) that is/are billing you, using their
designated contact point. (My recommendation would be to also use FedEx
Next AM delivery.)

Your financial institution is able to provide the name of the
organization, and their street address, for each charge made on your
account. Your financial institution might charge a fee for providing
that information to you.

Regardless, since Apache Open Office is distributed gratis, it wouldn't
be charging you for a license.

I suspect that you have confused Apache Open Office with either the

commercial programs/services that are unrelated to Apache Open Office in

Putting your photo on resume is considered a NO NO, bad idea

In most countries, requiring a resume to include a photograph is a
violation of local equal opportunity/affirmative action laws.

In some regions, many firms have an official policy of rejecting all
applications that include photographs, or videos of the applicant.

That said, there are fields of endeavor in which including a photograph
is the usual and standard practice. So much so, that the failure to
include a photograph is a guarantee that one will not be considered for
the position.

Change to: You do realize that less than 30% of computer users will ever

Users of Windows are less likely to look at help files than users of Mac
OS X, and users of Linux are more likely to look at help files.

I'll grant that that data is a decade old, and that help-file habits for
desktop usage might have changed since then. However, I'd hypothesize
that any change is towards what happens on mobile devices --- the user
goes straight to Google.

Apache Foundation infrastructure is setup for the individual projects to

can debate about the quality of said support, but nonetheless it does
exist, and is used by people everyday.

Furthermore, there are organizations that offer Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier
3 support for Apache OpenOffice, albeit said support can cost a very
pretty penny. (Now wondering if that organization that charged
US$1.00/minute for OOo support by phone is still around.)
These organizations are completely independent of anything done by The
Apache Foundation --- if the latter is even aware of their existence.

 There is no customer service.

From a consumer POV, this mailing list is customer service.

   1. does LibreOffice work with the same rules?

Yes, no, and maybe.

The Maybe part is that how words are counted, depends upon what, and
how LibreOffice has been configured to count words.

The Yes part is that LibreOffice that can count words, using word
boundaries.

The No part, is that LibreOffice that can count words, ignoring word
boundaries.

   2. from an academic point of view, if a word-count limit is set for
a document, would you expect a best-effort count in OO to be an
excuse for being a tad over in MS Word?

What ruleset does that academic institution in question use, to
determine the number of words in a document?

More pertinent to the original question, is how does the institution
define word?

Historically, a word is either five successive characters (typing) or
six successive characters (printing), with no consideration being given
to word-boundaries.

SourceForge is going to have to do a lot more than their public apology

They need cache, not only to pay for basic infrastructure,

Distributing malware is the best way to ensure that the only revenue is

 WP,

Are you using styles for presentation markup, semantic markup, or some
other type of markup, or a completely different purpose?

I'm going to suggest that despite the hours you invested in trying to
become proficient, you spent barely any time determining what it was,
that you were trying to accomplish.

What is more, when I was required to re-edit a Writer document at a
later time, I found the re-editing often undid all
the formatting I thought I had built into the Writer document.

That sounds like you are doing the markup manually, rather than by using
styles. Alternatively, you are saving the resulting document in file
format that does not preserve markup.
