Hi,

first, please open an RFE for it:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/enter_bug.cgi?product=oVirt
second, you can set it in vdsm.conf configuration file (/etc/vdsm/vdsm.conf).

as for how to do it, check out sample config file distributed with the rpm:

/usr/share/doc/vdsm-4.9.6/vdsm.conf.sample

make sure to restart vdsmd service on each hypervisor afterwards.

this only means libvirt can't find the guest on the host, was it on source or
destination?

please run the following:

on source server:

- egrep 'vmMigrate|_setupVdsConnection' /var/log/vdsm/vdsm.log
- then, from output, get the Thread number of both commands and run grep again:
- egrep 'Thread-$x|Thread-$y' /var/log/vdsm/vdsm.log

on destination server:

- egrep 'vmMigrationCreate|prepareImage' /var/log/vdsm/vdsm.log
- then, from output, get the Thread number of both commands and run grep again:
- egrep 'Thread-$x|Thread-$y' /var/log/vdsm/vdsm.log

please paste it here.

and you can also access this patch in the following link:
http://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/6794/2

Can you tell if the vdsm version installed on your host includes this patch?
(you can check under /usr/share/vdsm/clientIF.py).
If it's in there please send the full logs (engine+vdsm) and the bug might need
to be reopened,
otherwise you can just upgrade vdsm and hopefully it would solve the problem.

Yeela

Amador, does that mean the host is overcommitting by 18 G of avail

memAvailable maps the worst case to the Host.
It means: considering your current state, to assure the "Physical Memory
Guaranteed" for all running VMs, you need 18GB of additional RAM. This
is the consequence of enabling overcommit policy.

memAvailable = FREE_OR_CACHED + RESIDENT - memCommitted - Host Reserved
Memory

Where:
 FREE_OR_CACHED: from /proc/meminfo
RESIDENT: RSS value (2nd. field in /proc//statm) from all running
VMs processes.
memCommitted --> Physical Memory Guaranteed + Guest Overhead
(default 65MB) from running VMs.

*Notice that memAvailable does not considers KSM work.

The message is happening due to "memAvailable" statistic coming from vdsm.
The memAvailable field can be negative and considers a set of values from different

[Users] local variable 'volPath' referenced before assignment

2013-01-08 Thread Frank Wall
Hi,

I've updated my oVirt engine and node from version 3.1.0-2 to the
more recent 3.1.0-4. As far as I can tell from the update log, the
engine update went fine by following these instructions:
https://www.rvanderlinden.net/wordpress/ovirt/engine-installation/engine-upgrade/

Now I'm unable to start a VM through the Admin Portal. It fails with
the following error message:

VM test_srv is down. Exit message: local variable 'volPath' referenced before
assignment.

What's wrong? It seems this message is related to this bug report:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=843387
But apparently there is no solution.

What is the fix or workaround to get VMs working again?

Thanks

Re: [Users] Best practice to resize a WM disk image

2013-01-08 Thread Yeela Kaplan
So, first of all, you should know that resizing a disk is not yet supported in
oVirt.
If you decide that you must use it anyway, you should know in advance that it's
not recommended,
and that your data is at risk when you perform these kind of actions.

There are several ways to perform this.
One of them is to create a second (larger) disk for the vm,
run the vm from live cd and use dd to copy the first disk contents into the
second one,
and finally remove the first disk and make sure that the new disk is configured
as your system disk.
The second, riskier, option is to export the vm to an export domain,
resize the image volume size to the new larger size using qemu-img and also
modify the vm's metadata in its ovf,
as you can see this option is more complicated and requires deeper
understanding and altering of the metadata...
finally you'll need to import the vm back.

Some of this is no doubt my newbie-ness to ovirt. Most of my comments
below
have to do with the manager.

I started playing with RHEV 3.1 since I am responsible for delivering
support on it but just yesterday started playing with Fedora 17 and
all-in-one for ease of setup. I will try and document the specifics,
but the things I recall were things like:

- inability to setup NFS storage on the cluster until I had added a
host. I think
I missed some key concept here, but my feeling was that I
would/could/should
setup the manager (engine) first and then add virtual hosts.
Instead, there
seems to be a procedural step.

- along those lines the UI could do more to guide a user, a first-time
wizard
that would guide you through cluster and datacenter setups that are
independent
of the hosts. Guide Me is a good start, but perhaps it needs some
expansion.

>> - better error reporting from engine back to admin user during admin
>> operations.
>

- here's an example. Just installed AIO on Fedora 17. After going
through
everything, it says 'Install Failed'. The Event entry has a
correlation id,
which can be used to figure out what went wrong. (I guess). It
seems like
there could be more information provided to the admin on what to do
next aside
install again? Tooltip on what to do with correlation id? Oddly,
I can't
right click on Event text to bring up copy/paste menu with Chrome or
FF. Ctrl-c
worked with Chrome but not FF:

Host local_host installation failed. The required action is taking
longer than allowed by configuration. Verify host networking and
storage settings..

That gives you a clue, but then what? A handy pointer to the log file
would
  be good.

- Eons ago, in another product space, a complex product with hooks into
networking
and whatnot had a tiny diagnostic script that would attempt to
emulate the
requirements of the product. Perhaps that is needed here - something
outside
of the framework that could be a checklist of ports not open,
permissions, etc.
Things that an admin needs to address outside of engine.

- A menu item that would call the sosreport-like thing to collect data
would aid
  in supportability.

- A meta-page with pointers/contents to all logs, databases and so
forth would
be helpful. There is a lot of content scattered over the disk.

- A meta-page with a listing of critical processes.

Some of these things are doubtless outside the scope of abstraction
that is
currently there, but the manager is the connection between the admin
and the
hosts. As a critical resource the admin will likely not only be the one
administering to guests, but to the engine as well. Making that
person's
life easier will aid in acceptance and reduce long-term support costs.

My 2cents...

Rick

Dear Shu,

Exactly what I was saying, in that section we can only change in the
Advanced Parameters the NFS version, the Retransmissions and the Timeout.
Sorry, was not seeing these. I am afraid you can not append other
options, for neither ovirt engine nor VDSM accepts other options than
Retransmissions and the Timeout.

Therefore I see exactly no field for additional mount options.

As I know there is a thread on the mailing list about the new features
that should be included in the 3.2 version release. I think would be
useful to include this one too to the GUI, but again my question, how
could this be modified in the stable 3.1 release ?

Nice hack! But it means that all IP traffic between these two hosts is
routed over Infiniband. That's a Good Thing in your use case, but may
confuse other setups.

I would like to suggest a brand new "migration network" role in
http://www.ovirt.org/Features/Migration_Network to provide

Re: [Users] Can I move local_cluster in all-in-one setup?

2013-01-08 Thread Koch (ovido)
Hi Gianluca,

You could try the following:

- Create new datacenter and cluster
- Set VLAN for ovirtmgmt network in new DC
- Delete localhost from Default cluster
- Configure VLAN tagging on host manually
- Join localhost to new cluster using oVirt Admin Portal

Before joining localhost to the new cluster, comment out rebooting in
vds_bootstrap_complete.py:

$ vi /usr/share/vdsm-bootstrap/vds_bootstrap_complete.py
#deployUtil.reboot()

René

You say that I have to delete the DC first, but I think I can't delete a DC
if it contains some cluster...

If I understood correctly what written in another thread
(due to the problems related to archiving I have nto a link, because it was
started on 27/12/12; its subject was
[Users] tagged vs untagged and sharing the interface
)
with the target to edit ovirtmgmt for a pre-existing DC, named DC1,
containing a cluster CL1 it was prposed a possible workflow (not tested
said the op)

1) create temporary datacenter DC2
2) put CL1 in DC2
3) edit ovirtmgmt in DC1
4) put CL1 in DC1 again
5) delete DC2

If this is correct, how can I do it, in terms of operations related to
hosts, storage, clusters?
I don't find one because I don't understand how to complete 2)
Otherwise if 2) is not possible how can I do?

Thanks and sorry if I was not clear before...

[Users] libvirt dependency vs. a way to have Solaris hosts in ovirt-engine

2013-01-08 Thread Jiri Belka
Hi,

as you know Solaris (Open Indiana) has qemu-kvm although they don't use
libvirt (in fact libvirt tighted to much to Linux specifics).

If vdsm whould interact with qemu-kvm without libvirt it would open a
way to have Solaris hosts in ovirt-engine.

libvirt is another abstraction after vdsm layer, or if vdsm could use
"plugins" to interact with qemu-kvm (libvirt, "native", solaris-style),
it could use current mode, bypass libvirt and use solaris tools to talk
to their qemu-kvm.

by default, the installer allocates a range of 255 mac addresses based
on 2nd/3rd parts of engine ip address.
so setting two engines on same 255.255.255.0 subnet requires to change
the config to avoid mac conflicts.

Its just a theoretical question as I think the issue will come for us

I think there can be one or more snapshots in the WM over the time. But
if that is an issue we can always collapse them I think.
If its a base image it should be RAW, right?
In this case its on file storage (NFS).

When using maven the whole concept of "official" archive is different.
BSD ports build from source, so it should download sources, and sources do not
include any of the external dependency nor binaries.
Am I right so far?

The problem with maven is that it downloads dependencies during source build,
which is invalid approach as far as build methodology is concerned... but it is
what it is.

The Fedora project added wrapper to force maven to use local repository and for
maven artifacts to be installed at this local repository. This is healthy
solution as you build dependencies as standard packages, then maven will fetch
and use these local packages.

What you seek is binary distribution so ports will use binaries, is that
matches *BSD policy?

This is what I would like but it should be done by ovirt team itself.
BSD port systems (are generally just Makefiles) can _only_ download

So I guess you can download rpms from the internet and not maven artifacts...

What is the difference between the two?

Building using maven will prepare a full distribution exactly as you need, you
just need to build it in a computer that is connected to the internet and then
wrap up the resources and transfer it into the internal network.

Execute:
$ make
$ make install DESTDIR=/tmp/ovirt-engine-root

Regardless, porting the application to different distribution requires more
work as the startup service and setup environment are somewhat redhat/fedora
specific.

Of course help will be appreciate, we are planning to solve the setup issue by
rewriting it to match otopi infrastructure it will be one step closer to be
able to customize it to different distributions.

[Users] OS-independent ovirt-engine distribution archive

2013-01-08 Thread Jiri Belka
Hello,

I'm very slowly working to make ovirt-engine running on a BSD system.
My problem is that I do it for fun and as my time resources are not big
I could not choose building ovirt-engine from sources as it would push
me to "port" (make packages) for all java dependencies. Yes, during
build maven cannot download Internet and build dependencies (for
security reasons).

Would be possible to have (another) distribution archive of
ovirt-engine which would be OS/distro-independent, so I could just
extract and copy it to filesystem for local jboss? (RPM packages can be
extracted with 'rpm2cpio' but their owners decided to make life very
complicated [many symlinks etc.]).

OS/distro-independent distribution archive (.zip, .tgz) would make life
much easiers for people wanting to have ovirt-engine running on a
non-RPM based Linux distro or on a BSD/Solaris system.
