I take it then theres no way to do so without NFS?

[ovirt-users] Logical interface naming issues

2019-05-07 Thread Tom Edwards
Hello oVirt community,

Seems lik a bug. I don't have more than one environment to test on so I
can't be 100% sure and didn't want to file a report (but didn't know where
else to report this).

I have a fresh install self hosted ovirt cluster 4.3.1.1-1.el7. When I
build any logical network adapter with a "-" in the name ex
"guest-network-01" the network interface names appear on the hosts (using
ip addr command) as garbled names like on8cd19bc011414. They still appear
to work, but when you try to make a VNic profile based on the broken name
the VMs fail to boot, the VM has to be killed via command line on each host
afterwards (they try to boot and hang on all hosts in the cluster
corrupting the disk of the VM) because it can't find the parent logical
network interface by name.

Example errors:
VM Security-Onion is down with error. Exit message: (1, 'Cannot find device
"guest-dmz-ne"\n', ['/sbin/tc', 'qdisc', 'add', 'dev', 'guest-dmz-network',
'ingress']).
VDSM ovirt-2 command DestroyVDS failed: General Exception: ('(1, \'Cannot
find device "guest-dmz-ne"\\n\', [\'/sbin/tc\', \'filter\', \'show\',
\'dev\', \'guest-dmz-network\', \'parent\', \':\'])',)

That took me a very long time to figure out and broke many vms in the
process =(

So already have one ovirt engine setup separately on a vm that manages two
remote physical hosts. So familiar with the single host approach which I would
simply replicate. At least that’s the idea anyway. Could you please expand a
bit on the highly available module and syncing the config between hosts?

My “not relevant” response may be relevant now
Snapshot that server before and run your tests over and over. If you hit the
limit you can restore the snapshot. That’s what I was trying to explain. If
you hit the rearm limit without a backup to restore you are going to be in a
tough place.

2016-12-21 Thread Tom Gamull
Are there any events in the event log (usually Application Log entries under
Source: Software Licensing Service) similar to this (this error is unrelated,
just example of event log) - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/921471
<https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/921471>
I would consider reporting this to Microsoft, I am unaware of 2008 R2 having
this behavior (I have seen 2008 R2 used on KVM and libvirt for openstack
without issue and be migrated).

Re: [ovirt-users] Windows Product Activation

2016-12-21 Thread Tom Gamull
Something is triggering the activation that windows is detecting as a change in
hardware. I’ve not had this problem on 2012 or past versions, you’ll usually
encounter it when changing the hardware drivers (such as converting from
physical to virtual). Generally you want to install compatible drivers (like
the ovirt windows guest tools). A good practice though is to snapshot before
you make a change such as drivers in case you need to set the activation key.
For Desktops in VDI when you use a gold image, you generally make a snapshot
before activation - see here for an answer -
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/25c4c85c-c8a9-4316-8bfa-d3b7848e6dc6/microsoft-vdi-collections-and-activation?forum=winserver8setup

what kind of activation keys are you using? Do you have KMS server?

Re: [ovirt-users] How can I import VMWare OVA file to oVirt 4.0?

2016-12-15 Thread Tom Gamull
I'm not going to lie I never had much luck. I end up using qemu-img convert on
the command line to convert a vmdk to a raw file. The ova should just be a
compressed file. Plenty of blogs on this.

I know that's not the answer you're looking for but if you run out of options
you can do this. Look for articles on converting vmdk or ova or qcow2. You will
need to create the vm in advance. Then check the image name on the storage
subtab. Then do a find for it.
Find / -name [long name here]

I've had virtual appliances built for kvm just not work (like Citrix
Netscaler). Using the esx appliance and doing the steps above it works on
ovirt/rhev. I am not speaking for ovirt or red hat here though, just as someone
who muddled through

Re: [ovirt-users] oVirt Hosted Engine Deployment Issues (and fixed!)

2016-12-02 Thread Tom Gamull
I had some similar issues (also with IPV6 which I haven’t retried lately). I
ended up double checking /etc/resolv.conf and just dropping an entry there and
also ensuring the name servers were present in the ifcfg files. This did the
trick. Depending on how you configure LACP, sometimes the DNS seems to
magically disappear when ovirt creates the ovirtmgmt bridge interface. If you
are having an issue, it’s likely that interface.

The other thing that “may” be occurring is IPv6 is being used for DNS and you
don’t have an IPv6 DNS server (or it’s not routing correctly). You can verify
that by disabling IPv6 (you have to use sysctl, ifcfg options won’t completely
do it). If that works, then IPv6 was the issue.

Re: [ovirt-users] failed to activate a (gluster) host. ovirt 4.0.4

2016-10-26 Thread Tom Gamull
This is pointing to network connectivity issues

You can look at logs under /var/logs/ovirt-*

Check your dns and make sure the hosts can connect to each other. You can
restart the host, mark it as restarted in the manager and then activate it.

Worst case, you can remove it using hosted-engine commands

Re: [ovirt-users] Using Local Harddisks on the Host for Storage Domains

2016-10-26 Thread Tom Gamull
I’ve done the same. You may get some shutdown issues with this approach on
sanlock so if this is more of a home lab and you shutdown a lot sometimes the
following helps

systemctl stop ovirt-ha-agent ovirt-ha-broker
systemctl stop vdsmd
systemctl stop sanlock
systemctl stop nfs
systemctl power off

The sanlock will take a while
Sometimes I’ve also had to manually mount the volumes under /rhev/…

YMMV

Re: [ovirt-users] unsupported configuration: Unable to find security driver for model selinux

2016-10-12 Thread Tom Gamull
This should work but that is a little strange (I’m copying from the suggested
action)
-
If you believe that qemu-kvm should be allowed getattr access on the
a3f29de7-c6b9-410e-b635-9b3016da7ba2 lnk_file by default.
Then you should report this as a bug.
You can generate a local policy module to allow this access.
Do
allow this access for now by executing:
# grep qemu-kvm /var/log/audit/audit.log | audit2allow -M mypol
# semodule -i mypol.pp
———

It looks like the qemu-kvm is having access issues on lnk files.

Could you try the above action on node69-02 and see if that resolves the issue?
It may be a bug.

Can you set it to permissive and run
sealart -a /var/log/audit/audit.log

you may need to install selinux tools

Re: [ovirt-users] Windows VDI Licensing

2016-09-29 Thread Tom Gamull
Technically you need VDA licenses but it is not enforced. Licensing by
Microsoft almost requires its own certification.
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn645517(v=ws.11).aspx
<https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn645517(v=ws.11).aspx>

Office will need a MAK key (multiple activation) you will need to “seal” your
image and rearm the license. If you rearm a certain amount of times, you’ll
have to reinstall to reset it (so make sure you snapshot before office
install/activation). A KMS server works also but that involves setting up a MS
server to give out the license keys. The other alternative is to not care and
let it nag you (especially if you are just doing a demo).

Re: [ovirt-users] vlan tagging issue

2016-09-15 Thread Tom Gamull
Can you eliminate the switch or port config as the issue? I’m a little unclear
as to how you configured the nodes I have basically use a single NIC (some are
LACP bonds) with a GENERAL link type (not TRUNK or ACCESS) where there is a
default VLAN (which I don’t tag) and the rest of the VLANs are tagged. On my
switch (TP-LINK) I have to go to the VLANs and say TAG on all of them except
the DEFAULT one. I couldn’t get TRUNK working even with one untagged and the
rest tagged. For me, using GENERAL was the way I did it.

I’m not a networking except on hardware but this discussion may clarify. I
have no idea why TRUNK didn’t work over GENERAL and didn’t spend much more time
than that but here’s a discussion on the topic
https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/11897946/general-vs-trunk-mode

Re: [ovirt-users] Documentation

2016-09-04 Thread Tom Gamull
The docs do suck but I would challenge you to submit a pull request. It’s a
pain if you haven’t done github forks and pull requests. However, if you do
this and it doesn’t get merged, you have every right to complain and I’ll be
behind you 100%. I’ve been in your shoes and just recently started helping in
little bits on some projects.

If you can fork the documents, change them to include your notes, I’d be happy
to hand hold or explain how to do the pull request (think merging your changes
back). you can even email me direct if needed.

[ovirt-users] Unable to install 3.6.5 under CentOS 6.7

2016-05-16 Thread Tom Lambdin
Hi,

Although the release note indicates that 3.6.5 is supported under CentOS/RHEL
6.7, when we attempt to update to the the latest version under CentOS 6.7, the
highest version we can get from the repo is 3.6.3.
If we spin up a brand new machine running CentOS 7.2, we do however
successfully get 3.6.5. Ideally we’d like to avoid having to migrate our
management host to CentOS 7 at this time.
Is there something we’re missing here or is there a problem with the repo
configuration?

Regards,

-Tom Lambdin

[ovirt-users] Introduction!

2014-12-23 Thread Tom Weeks
Hello,

I am happy to join the community and help support the project. I'm a long
time user of vSphere/vCenter but I am an aspiring to work within
open-source world. My work experience is in corporate environments and
includes virtualization, storage, as well as basic networking.

I hope I can start helping by converting my homelab from the VMware stack
to oVirt. I can contribute by submitting bug requests and
documentation...let me know if that would be helpful!

[Users] Migration of engine

2013-06-13 Thread Tom Brown
Hi

We use 3.1 on centos 6 and have the need to migrate the engine due to hardware
issues. Looking at

http://wiki.ovirt.org/Backup_engine_db

Are there any other files apart from the db that might be needed or once the db
is migrated into a freshly installed engine with the same IP and hostname as
the original all will be well?

many thanks___

[Users] Failed to Start VM (Run Once) due to internal spice channel error

2013-03-18 Thread Tom Rogers
When trying to run a first time (Run Once) VM install, the vm session fails
to start. When we look into the libvirtd.log on the host, we find the
following error:

virDomainGraphicsDefParseXML:6566 : internal error unknown spice channel

in the lines right above message, contained in the xmlDESC we find the
following snippet:

It looks to us that the xml may be malformed due to the seemingly first
character missing in the channel names.

Does this make any sense to anyone?

[Users] DL380 G5 - Fails to Activate

2013-01-24 Thread Tom Brown
Hi

I have a couple of old DL380 G5's and i am putting them into their own cluster
for testing various things out.
The install of 3.1 from dreyou goes fine onto them but when they try to
activate i get the following

Host xxx.xxx.net.uk moved to Non-Operational state as host does not meet the
cluster's minimum CPU level. Missing CPU features : model_Conroe, nx

KVM appears to run just fine on these host and their cpu's are

Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU5140 @ 2.33GHz

Is it possible to add these in to a 3.1 cluster ??

yes - i am not sure why those packages are in dreyou's repo, they weren't there
a couple of weeks ago when the last HV was built as that one just pulled the
stock CentOS ones.

I may just leave it and wait until 3.2 comes along with official RHEL/CentOS
packages

Re: [Users] KVM version not showing in Ovirt Manager

2013-01-23 Thread Tom Brown
I mentioned these in the first post but they are CentOS 6.3's running on
dreyou's packages - the KVM packages are different between the nodes as
indicated below

working

node002 ~]# rpm -qa | grep kvm
qemu-kvm-tools-0.12.1.2-2.295.el6_3.8.x86_64
qemu-kvm-0.12.1.2-2.295.el6_3.8.x86_64

non working

node003 ~]# rpm -qa | grep kvm
qemu-kvm-rhev-0.12.1.2-2.295.el6.10.x86_64
qemu-kvm-rhev-tools-0.12.1.2-2.295.el6.10.x86_64

cheers

[Users] Adding additional network(s)

2013-01-22 Thread Tom Brown
Hi

I am setting up another DC, that is managed by my sole management
node, and this DC will have a requirement that the VM's will need an
additional storage NIC. This NIC is for NFS/CIFS traffic and is
independent of the oVirt VM's disks.

I have cabled the additional physical NIC in the HV's as this network
is non routed storage, and I where to go from here. Whats the next
step needed to add the NIC to the DC and then i presume adding the NIC
to the VM's is straight forward.

[Users] KVM version not showing in Ovirt Manager

2013-01-22 Thread Tom Brown
Hi

I have just added another HV to a cluster and its up and running fine. I can
run VM's on it and migrate fro other HV's onto it. I do note however that in
the manager there is no KVM version listed as installed however on other HV's
in the cluster there is a version present.

I see that the KVM version is slightly different on this new host but as i said
apart from this visual issue everything appear to be running fine. These HV's
are CentOS 6.3 using dreyou 3.1

Node where KVM version not showing in the manager

node003 ~]# rpm -qa | grep kvm
qemu-kvm-rhev-0.12.1.2-2.295.el6.10.x86_64
qemu-kvm-rhev-tools-0.12.1.2-2.295.el6.10.x86_64

Node where KVM version is showing in the manager

node002 ~]# rpm -qa | grep kvm

based on my previous posts i dont suppose you have a working example do you as
i am having great difficulty making it work how i would imagine. I can create
the VM fine, set the boot order and have the console all correct, its just
'attaching' the iso that is the issue.

if i were starting from scratch you may well be correct, its just this is a
small piece of some larger orchestration and its all a bit too embedded as is
to start to rework it at this time.

It was indeed the case! my src node was set to disabled and my destination node
was enforcing, this was due to the destination being the first HV built and
therefore provisioned slightly differently, my kickstart server is a VM in the
pool.

Its interesting that a VM can be provisioned onto a node that is set to
enforcing and yet not migrated to.

i suppose ideally both - a browser plugin would be great as then interaction
