Re: [libreoffice-users] unsubscribe

2018-02-08 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Most organisations have instructions in the footer of any and all emails
they send. It usually involves using a slightly different email address,
often with the word "unsubscribe" in the address, rather than simply using
"Reply to". The Document Foundation are no different. At the bottom of all
LibreOffice emails it says;
"To unsubscribe e-mail to: users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org
"

Good luck and regards from
a Tom :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] unsubscribe

2015-08-05 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
To unsubscribe please send an email to the special address;
users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org

Note that many email clients change that from a clickable link to an edited
one that doesn't work. It needs you to make sure the bit before the plus
sign and the bit afterwards are both included.

It doesn't matter what, if anything, you put in the subject-line or the
message as neither gets read by the automated system.

Full instructions are on the official website on this page;
http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] Unsubscribe

2014-12-18 Thread Cley Faye
And since some people do have difficulties to unsubscribe, consider this:
- You have to send the mail *from* the address you used to subscribe, even
if you redirect your mail afterward
- You have to send the mail *to* users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org,
the + part is important. Some (bad) client mangle it, or skip part of the
address when you click. In doubt, type it by hand, it's the only way to be
sure :)

Also note that it his possible to unsubscribe from the list and subscribe
to a digest version, that produce less mails and allow oneself to follow
some discussions.

Hi :)
Annoyingly in my email 'client' the address

users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org

is shown looking like

unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org

is the email address and the users+ as being some strange extra bit that is
not really part of the address.  I'm guessing that happens with some other
email 'clients' that are in common usage these days.  The users+ part is an
important part of the address so it really needs to be the entire line

users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org

Also it's fairly rare to find a signature that is actually helpful.  Mostly we
get so used to completely ignoring useless disclaimers and hopeful messages
about having been scanned by some embarrassingly ancient antivirus them that we
don't even bother to read even the good ones.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Unsubscribe

2012-08-16 Thread Florian Effenberger

Hello,

in order to improve the wording of the unsubscribe instructions, could
you please tell us where you had the problems and what step did not work
out?

When you write to the users+h...@global.libreoffice.org you'll receive a
mail for instructions on how to subscribe and unsubscribe, and the
unsubscribe addresses differ depending on whether you have a normal
subscription (you receive each mail individually and without delay), or
digest mode (you receive a collection of mails). Is that where the
misunderstanding started?

You will then receive another mail, asking for confirmation of the
unsubscribe, in order to prevent other people from unsubscribing you
without your consent - just as the request for confirmation when
subscribing prevents that other people add you to the list. Were you
able to figure out that you had to send another mail to the appropriate
unsubscribe address, after receiving the automatic reply?

We also link to a handy page with all information about unsubscribing,
including a human contact you can reach in case things do not work for
you. This page is linked in the footer of every message. Did you read
this page? You can find it at
http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/

You were now manually removed from the list, but nevertheless we'd be
glad if you could tell us where the problem was, so that we can improve
the process and make it easier for other users in the same situation as
you were.

Thanks,
Florian

 ffs.

I think that Tom has a point here. Mailing lists were around for really long
time and they are pretty convenient for people who are used to them. But most
of computer/Internet users these days are not. They like simple web interface
of bulletin boards software (also called forums). They can't configure their
e-mail software (even most web interfaces provide needed features) to move all
traffic from specific source (mailing list) into separate folder. I think that
they are just overwhelmed by whole new experience with mailing list. And this
causes frustration...

I know there is that Nabble gateway, but it seems that there may be two
problems with it (I don't know if any is valid, since I don't use it):

1. registered people still get mails from mailing list, although they prefer
to check for new messages themselves on webpage.

2. It is too hidden. On page http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-
lists/ classic mailing lists are exposed, while Nabble gateway is only
mentioned. Perhaps this page should focus on Nabble gateway, while classic
mailing lists addresses should be only mentioned (maybe moved to another
page?). People who would like to use mailing lists would find info they need,
while inexperienced users would not be bothered by whole mailing lists stuff,
about which they neither know nor care.

Well, hoping this can put an end to this twist in the thread, and to
save Florian from having to say it.

There is an AskBot web service being readied for service in the very
near future (can't give you a date, as I don't know it), and would
strongly urge people preferring a web forum to give this service a
reasonable try.

I first looked at this type of service sceptically, but I put a fair bit
of time to really look at it and the more I dug into it the more
attractive it became. I'm not saying it will make everyone happy but I
think it deserves very serious consideration.

Hi :)
Hmm, oddly in Launchpad forums you can respond by email.  You get an email from
the forum and the email contains exactly what was typed into the forum.  Then
you can respond by email just by clicking Reply to.

Of course it does have problems of it's own but it's easier for first timers
that are new to this non-telephone support.  It's more polite and doesn't spam
people that only wanted to deal with 1 thread.  You can easily add yourself to
the list of people that receive those emails whenever anyone posts anything to
the forum.

Sorry for double-posting yet again :(

This list does have 2 very distinctly different purposes
1.  as user-support
2.  as a discussion list
Clearly people are having trouble with this list when they need it for 1 but
many of us enjoy it for 2.

Perhaps an official user-support forum at Launchpad could send emails to the
discussion list?

to see are official forums that are populated with answers to FAQs asked on the
lists that people can be referred to if all they want is an answer to one
specific question...

2012-01-19 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
This is an extremely high-traffic list and that is not made clear to people
when they sign-up so it can cause panic.

A proper official forum such as most modern projects use (Firefox, Fedora,
Ubuntu, Mint and so on and on) would neatly avoid all sorts of recurring
problems.  But of course we have to stick with some ancient system that makes
the project look like something pre-Win95.  Even Arch has forums ffs.

That's sad

One experience decides it all? Not a fair basis for conclusions my friend.
Mailing lists are like this. U probably needed to signup for a digest instead
of regular deliveries. U get only few mails and you'll still be hearing from
libreoffice users.

You may also need to join forums and IRC chat channels if you're desperate but
leaving a mailing list with that tone for reason of email traffic isn't fair.
Did anyone abuse you here?

Hi :)
The instructions are at the bottom of each of the emails
http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/
People don't see it because they are over-whelmed and panic.

Randy has an excellent point about these lists being a major blocker.  Forums
(fora?) would be a much more professional approach.

Re: [libreoffice-users] UNSUBSCRIBE

2012-01-19 Thread Tom Davies
 if
there doesn't seem to be any), you'll receive a message asking for
confirmation of the unsubscription request. The message will resemble
the example below.
Subject: Confirm unsubscribe from: users@global.libreoffice.org

Hi, this is the mlmmj program managing the mailinglist

users@global.libreoffice.org

To confirm you want the address

john@example.com

removed from this list, please send a reply to

long email-address

Your mailer may automatically reply to this address when you hit
the reply button. [...]

You confirm your intention by replying to the message. It is a mandatory step
to reply to the confirmation message, otherwise your subscription will not be
terminated and you will continue to receiving traffic from the list.
After you send the confirmation message, you will receive one more
message that confirms that you have indeed been unsubscribed. That
should be the last message you get.
If the above instructions don't work
Check your spam folder. Sometimes the confirmation request ends up
in the spam or bulk mail folder, and people don't notice this and
then wonder why they are still receiving mail.
Wait some time. Some mail servers implement a technology called
greylisting which can delay e-mails up to several hours in the worst
case. If you haven't received any message asking for confirmation after
about four hours, and you checked your spam/junk folder, then something
indeed went wrong.
If all your attempts to unsubscribe just don't work, then - as a last resort -
please send a message to postmas...@documentfoundation.org
and include the following information: The lists you want to be
unsubscribed from, the address you're subscribed with, and detailed
information about the problems you encountered. Please include/forward
the replies you received from the mailing list system, if you received
any.
Apols and regards fromTom :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] UNSUBSCRIBE

2012-01-19 Thread Onyeibo Oku
Alternatively, you can configure your email service to filter out a particular
subject line ... Or bits of it, and channel the rest to trash.

That should give you some isolation from libreoffice mails other than the
thread you started (long shot) :) ... But I guess that depends on what your
email service providers allow.

I knew I was subscribing ... all I wanted to know was how to get Java

formatting a picture ...etc

Now all I want to do is quit getting these eMails

Re: [libreoffice-users] unsubscribe

2011-08-17 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
A lot of email clients that are in common usage by normal office workers have
really appalling defaults. There is not much chance of getting the IT Dept to
set it up right and they often block people from changing settings for
'security' reasons. Maybe IT Departments would be less concerned about
security
if stuff didn't break so easily. OpenSource defaults tend to be much better.
So that's 2 reasons to get OpenSource products more accepted in workplaces.

Re: [libreoffice-users] unsubscribe

2011-08-16 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Your position is a good one and doesn't need defending. If we all agreed about
everything all the time it would be very dull. Lets hope we never get there!

Usually we work towards a win-win so that everyone is happy but in this case we
have been forced into a compromise which no-one has won and some points of view
have lost out more than others. The fact is (imo) that you are right and other
people (incl me) are trying to defend a less-than-perfect system.

There is a Nabble thread about this and if you have a good idea of how to
implement a better answer then it would be great to add to that thread. That
seems to be the blocker at the moment, the implementation is not easy. Other
mailing lists have better answers but the mailing-list system we are using is
different.

Tom :)

Are you deliberately missing the point? Changing the footer will NOT be

changing the footer is simply wasting time and effort.

The foorer is parsed correctly at my end, using gmail/evolution/ubuntu
11.04. Is it an improperly configured client?

In using a java based email client on WinXP it ends up with
users@global.libreoffice.org as the email address and +help as the subject.
The same client under eCS works fine so it could be the interface with XP and
the client or an issue within XP itself. Apparently Tom also has seen
incorrect parsing. Maybe if the plus sign was changed to a minus it would
work better, I don't know.

You'd think, wouldn't you. Trouble is, the perpetrators of such
unsub faux pas make the gaff because they can't be arsed to read the
footer at all. As a result, for them, the content is irrelevant.

That is exactly why they should not be confronted with this superfluous
step, since there is not reason not to simplify the procedure. You would
still have errors, but they would be far fewer. Why is that wrong?

The people who are experiencing the problem (or, as you might put it,
are inflicting the problem on us) are (as has been pointed out) largely
office type people, who may be having their first exposure to lists and
how to use them. If you want to just solve the problem of getting them
unsubscribed, you will have to make it as obvious as possible, which is
why all other lists, as far as I can remember, have the unsubscribe
instruction up front, not hidden behind an instruction to get the
instruction (one might caall that the obstruction).

If you prefer to ignore their naivete, and to continue to confront them
with this unnecessary barrier, you can have the joy of feeling superior
to them (which is what you are doing), with all the pleasant buzz that
this may give you, and have a laugh each and every time there is one of
these plaints on the list -- and the annoyance will continue.

I do not know who is responsible administration of the list, but my hope
is that he will wake up one morning, and figure out what the less
juvenile choice should be.

It might help, actually, if instead of requiring the hopeful escapee to
send off an email in order to learn how to send off a second emall, the
footer merely tell the fellow what email he must send in order to leave.
That is what is done in most lists, it isn't clear why it can't be done.
here as well. We don't need to punish people for wanting to unsubscribe.

It might be even better to say click here to unsubscribe. Although the
address is currently given as a link, the link is very easy to overlook,
especially that (as has been pointed out) many users of this list are
not technical people, and this may be their first experience with lists
and leaving them.

Inviting people to email the help system if they have a problem is very
nice, but it's a separate issue, and bundling the unsubscribe method
into it only complicates matters for unsubscribing, which is always the
chief reason for involving the administrative function in the first
place.

There are half a dozen different ways an individual can be subscribed
to this list. Consequently, how to unsubscribe depends upon how the
 individual originally subscribed.

Actually, according to the help file that we are dragging the poor
fellow through, there are two:

He can be getting messages one by each, or
He can be getting a digest.

Those are the choices he is being offered to unsubscribe, so if there
are four others, they are being ignored anyway.

I guess each way could be put in the footer, but that would make for
a footer that was at least twenty lines long, and probably closer to
 thirty.

Not twenty, two. It should not be a lot of trouble for a dedicated
operative to devise a way to do that.

Or, alternatively, we could continue the current method, which (as far
as I have seen from the many lists to which I subscribe now or have
subscribed in the past, is unique, and which produces entirely too many
requests to the list membership to unsubscribe me. There is nothing
special about this list that requires a more clumsy unsubscribe method
than any othe list on the planet.

Steve, if there is an issue with unsubscribing, please voice it in the
proper way.

For those who use GMail and you may want to unsubscribe: GMail offers a feature
to easily unsubscribe from a mailing list.

seconds' delay between sending your message and getting the reply to act
on.  If you don't get one, check an incoming email and see if the address
is the one you thought.  You might have another email address which you
 forward to your main address.

The address to send your mail to is at the bottom of this mail.  Clicking
or right-clicking on that should open an email message to send.

No, that goes to users+help, not to users+unsubscr...@libreoffice.org
(apparently to accommodate the differences for people who subscribed to the
digest -- or used -nomail, in which case I have no idea why they'd bother to
unsubscribe). Whoever is trying to unsubscribe will probably get there in
the end, though. But if they don't know the subscribed address, they'll need
to look at the Return-Path header and pick out the indirect form (using
equals instead of at) of the subscribed address, and unsubscribe that.

Yes, the footer says clearly:

Unsubscribe instructions: E-mail to users+h...@libreoffice.org

So you send a message, to get the unsubscribe instructions. As you
said, there's a difference in the mailto-address for the regular
mail and the digest version of the mailing list.

The no-mail option exists for those people who follow the lists
through a news gateway like gmane. You need to be subscribed, to send
messages, but you'll get the replies through your newsreader. So
there's no need to send you the mails extra.

Question to moderator/owner -- the help doesn't describe anything that uses
the indirect form in the case of a subscribed address that is no longer
directly accessible. Does that capability exist? How does it work, if so?

As to your question, I don't know the answer, and we'll have to wait for the

I don't know, if this possibility exists for the lists at

What I meant was that there's info in the help about how to unsubscribe a no-mail address, and I
really don't know why anybody would bother! Do you know why the subscription is necessary for Gmane
(etc.) when it isn't for the OOo lists? Apparently there are some significant differences relative
to ezmlm handling. The main problem I see is that the moderators are the only ones who know that a
user is not subscribed, so they have to give instructions about how to follow the thread. The tricky
part is that they can't supply specific links (those don't yet exist at the point of moderation),
and the user needs to be able to reply as well as view, to supply additional info, for example. So
they have to get search instructions, and how to subscribe no-mail.

Question to moderator/owner -- the help doesn't describe anything that uses the
indirect form in the case of a subscribed address that is no longer directly
accessible. Does that capability exist? How does it work, if so?

There are hints in the Return-Path header that the indirect address (with an equals instead of an
at) can be used here, too, but the use of parameters (with minus signs) complicates it. I would
guess that the indirect address would be attached to the command part after a hyphen (or plus?),
with the parameters following after a space, but I'm not sure. On the OOo lists, I always recommend
the indirect form for subscribe/unsubscribe, to avoid issues with munging and with not using the
same account for both actions. Guess I could try it and see!

Yes, it could be like the one on the openoffice.org website but with
unsubscribe mailto's as well. Are you referring here to putting a link
to that page in the message footer? Sounds like a plan! And it could
index into the FAQ, too.

Exactly. When that page is ready, removing the +help address, but rather
pointing to that page could be helpful. Something like:

Information on unsubscribing and accessing the archives are available
at: ...

I seem to remember somebody else mentioning this on the OOo users list,
but in any case we seem to be OK now.

Ok, let me know if it occurs again.

If you send a message to users-h...@openoffice.org, you'll see some
other commands that don't seem to be supported yet for the LibO list
management (at least from its own help). Some of them might be useful.

Oh, no, not right now, unfortunately. But we're working closely with the
mlmmj developers to implement new features. In fact, one script written
by my colleague Alex, which stripts HTML and attachments out of mails,
already made it into their contrib tree.
