[ovirt-users] Re: oVirt Node 4.5.5 no virtualization tab

2024-09-20 Thread arkansascontrols--- via Users
No I downloaded the oVirt Node 4.5 ISO and installed from that. My
understanding is the oVirt Node os is centos based but it's not the full
centos-9 stream install and is supposed to have everything for a single node or
for a Hyperconverged cluster. Without any cluster configured, each individual
node should still be capable of creating and hosting VM's, yet there is no
evident means of even something as basic as creating a VM.

As near as I can tell, the cockpit-overt-dashboard is the web interface that is
located at :9090 on the node itself. Those WebUI's load and provide a bit of
information, with different tabs on the left, but there is no tab for
Virtualization.

I don't see any way to attach screenshots or I'd post a few so everyone could
see what I'm seeing. Something is definitely missing.

If anyone has a better method of installation for a 3 node cluster please let
me know. I'm perfectly fine with starting over on the installs.

are you using centos-9 stream?

apparently centos-9 stream base ovirt seems doesn't provide
cockpit-ovirt-dashboard in their repository packages.
at least for now (afaik). you need to perform manual deployment start from

Sadly I have no procedure ready for it and no time for working on it.
My best advice would be to migrate from a hosted engine on el8 to a stand
alone engine on el9 by installing a fresh centos stream 9 engine and
re-importing the backup there.

Hello, welcome to the ovirt community,
You can follow multiple ways to automate your tasks with the restful
API or derivated python/ruby/java SDK and ansible.
For my own part, I created a full automated environment based on the
ovirt.ovirt collection
https://docs.ansible.com/ansible/latest/collections/ovirt/ovirt/index.html
You can easily create functional playbooks in a second, a lot of
pratical and useful examples are provided for each modules (included
importing vms).
It works like a charm since many years.
Otherwise, If you want to massively import vms from vmware, you can use
the embedded UI import tool, it is straigthforward.
Good luck

When speaking about AMX, you have to consider three layers: kernel, QEMU,
libvirt

. support in the KVM kernel module is there since 5.17
If you decline to Red Hat base OS distros, you can refer to this:
https://access.redhat.com/solutions/7033476
that means AMX support is present since 9.0 GA and since 8.6 GA

. support of cpu model SapphireRapids, the first offering AMX as an ISA
extension, is in QEMU since 7.0

. support for the SapphireRapids CPU model was added in libvirt 9.4.0

I would say that in CentOS 9 Stream all the dependencies above should be
satisfied.
On RH EL 8 based systems, and so also on OLVM, the missing part is related
to libvirt still being at 9.0.0-5

Also, speaking about oVirt, I don't know how it manages the dropdown menu
when you select "CPU Type" in cluster creation and edit phases.
Does it directly use a command, such as "virsh cpu-models x86_64", on the
fly or the list of xml files under /usr/share/libvirt/cpu_map/ directory or
an oVirt maintained specific file or inside the engine db?
Any clarification on this?

For the ones without any AMX knowledge, a good starting point to understand
its AI acceleration capabilities for CPU based workloads, is here:
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/docs/accelerator-engines/advanced-matrix-extensions/overview.html

Hi Rik,

Nice to see other people in Belgium are using oVirt :)
I guess oVirt should work fine on EL8.10, might just want to try and see
what errors you get?

Another option might be to go for CentOS Stream 9, but use qemu-kvm with
SPICE:

https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/ligenix/enterprise-qemu-spice/

But that might need some patches to other parts in oVirt.

Jean-Louis

Now that CentOS 8 Stream is EOL, what is the procedure to
install/update oVirt on EL8 machines? Have the required packages from
CentOS Stream 8 been merged in EL8.10?

Unfortunately, migrating to CentOS Stream 9 is not an option in our
environment as we need SPICE support, which has been dropped in EL9.

[ovirt-users] Re: Ovirt Hyperconverged Storage

2024-04-29 Thread Thomas Hoberg
And I might have misread where your problems actually are...

Because oVirt was born on SAN but tries to be storage agnostic, it creates its
own overlay abstraction, a block layer that is then managed within oVirt even
when you use NFS or GlusterFS underneath.

"The ISO domain" has actually been deprecated and ISO images can be put into
any domain type (e.g. also data).

But they still have to be uploaded to that domain via the management engine
GUI, you can't just copy the ISO images somewhere within the files and
directories oVirt might create and expect them to be visible to the GUI or the
VMs.

[ovirt-users] Re: Ovirt Hyperconverged Storage

2024-04-29 Thread Thomas Hoberg
Hi Tim,

HA, HCI and failover either require or at least benefit from consistent storage.

The original NFS reduce the risk of inconsistency to single files, Gluster puts
the onus of consistency mostly the clients and I guess Ceph is similar.

iSCSI has been described as a bit the worst of everything in storage and I can
appreciate that view in a HA scenario because it doesn't help with consistency.

Of course, its block layer abstraction isn't really that different from SAN or
NFS 4.x object storage.

I last experimented with iSCSI 20 years ago, mostly because it seemed so great
for booting even less cooperative diskless hosts than Sun workstations over the
network.

But if I had a reliable TrueNAS and wanted to run oVirt, I'd just go with NFS.

AFAIK oVirt was born on SAN but with SAN outside of oVirt's purvue. So if your
iSCSI setup behaves like a SAN, oVirt should be easy to get going, but I've
never tried myself.

And the lack of tried and tested tutorials or videos from 20 different sources
might be the reason oVirt didn't quite push out everybody else.

[ovirt-users] Re: Ovirt Hyperconverged Storage

2024-04-25 Thread Tim Walsh
I'm trying to set up an HA / Hyperconverged failover cluster using a couple
4.3.10 nodes and a TrueNAS/iSCSI (modeling on VMs on a server 2019 Hyper-V
system to work out the process before building it all out on bare metal).

Are there any good articles on how to get that set up? I seem to have added
the storage in a "DATA" storage domain but can't figure out how to add the
"ISO" domain. It creates a ton of folders too (like IDS, inbox, leases,
master, etc) under:

── mnt
├── blockSD
│ ├── 5727577b-1647-4664-9a70-84a03873d009
│ │ ├── dom_md

I can only imagine VMs would then be created in this "images" folder..??

│ │ └── images
│ │ ├── 0e8cc064-969d-4760-a9da-8e0016f35477

I have set up a complete setup running local storage (complete with Data, ISO,
and Export storage domains), but now I want to figure out the hyperconverged
failover cluster model.

Thanks in advance,

Tim Walsh

[ovirt-users] Re: Ovirt Hyperconverged

2024-04-17 Thread Thomas Hoberg
I've tried to re-deploy oVirt 4.3 on CentOS7 servers because I had managed to
utterly destroy a HCI farm, where most VMs had migrated to Oracles variant of
RHV 4.4 on Oracle Linux. I guess I grew a bit careless towards its end.

Mostly it was just an academic exercise to see if it could be resurrected... I
was much happier with the Oracle variant anyway.

And I've hit similar issues all over the place: the ansible scripts and/or the
python packages they interact with are utterly broken with now years of
completely disjunct bug-fixing going on.

The underlying CentOS 7 packages continue in maintenance (some more weeks to
go..), but the oVirt 4.3 on top has been unmaintained for years.

Since these are just sanity checks, I deleted all of them, one after the other
(and there is lots of them!), and I eventually got it to work again.

Don't have a single VM on it, though, because you can't trust it, the hardware
is ancient and it really was just a finger exercise at that stage. With CentOS
7 going out of support now, it's really messing with a corpse.

I'm currently operating Oracle's 4.4 variant running on their Linux, too, which
still has Gluster based HCI built-in, even if they don't mention it at all.

Just make sure you switch their Unbreakable Linux kernel for the Redhat variant
everywhere, otherwise you'll risk all kinds of nasties.

It's been way more stable than oVirt 4.3 ever was, but that doesn't mean it's
"enterprise": that was always one fat big exaggeration, withful thinking,
whatever.

And don't fall for their 4.5 variant, that came out end of last year: that one
doesn't support HCI any more and actually seems to fail withOUT their
Enterprise Linux kernels.

And no, it doesn't run on EL9 either, that might take another year or so, as
Oracle's oVirt implementation is almost a year behind oVirt at the moment.

[ovirt-users] Re: Ovirt Hyperconverged

2024-04-15 Thread Ricardo OT
Hi,
I have recently tried to install the hosted engine on a node recently installed
with Rocky Linux 8.9 with glusterfs and with the nightly oVirt master snapshot
repository, and I have also tried to do the same with the Oracle distribution
and I have not been able to get the installation of the hosted engine to work.
Before this worked. Now I have only managed to install the engine as
standalone. Does anyone know what could be the reason?

2024-03-07 Thread Mark R
That is wild and definitely not in line with the behavior we saw when a
motherboard failed in one of our small 3-node oVirt 4.5 clusters. The bad host
hard-froze, shortly after that one of the surviving nodes fenced it via IPMI,
and all the VMs that had been running on it were started on surviving hosts.

It sounds like your experience is that a single node fails (even one with no
VMs on it at the time), and the surviving hosts shut down (or do they kill) the
VMs that they have running. Is that accurate?

[ovirt-users] Re: Ovirt 4.5 HA over NFS fails when a single host goes down

2024-03-06 Thread Youssef Khristo
So for the sake of figuring out what's going on, I un-deployed the
hosted-engine from 3 of the 6 hosts, and then removed those 3 from the cluster.
I left only 2 VMs up (HE and another one), and the remaining 3 hosts have the
capability of running the hosted-engine with an Active Score of 3400, so no
split-brain scenario could happen.

I simply unplugged the network from one of the hosts, that also happened not to
be hosting any VMs so as to simulate an unexpected shutdown/failure, and in
around 30 seconds the 2 VMs (including the HE) were down and stayed down until
the failed host was brought back up.

What I'm trying to say here is that HE and any other highly available VM fail
if a single host (just one) fails. Is there anything I could debug or look into
that I might've missed when setting up oVirt? Is there a misconfiguration
somewhere?

Thank you and best regards

[ovirt-users] Re: Ovirt 4.5 HA over NFS fails when a single host goes down

2024-03-05 Thread LS CHENG
Hi

I am not sure how split brain works in ovirt. In other cluster solutions
you can have an even number of nodes such as 4, 6 , 8 etc. All nodes writes
to quorum disk, say we have four nodes if one node goes down the other
three will vote

node 1 says I see node 2 and 3 but not 4
node 2 says I see node 1 and 3 but not 4
node 3 says I see node 1 and 2 but not 4

So all three votes node 4 must leave the cluster and the split brain is
solved

The split-brain explanation makes a lot of sense, so I changed the HE VM
deployed hosts from 6 to 5, as well as set an Affinity Group with soft VM to
Hosts enforcement for the other VMs (since HE is managed separately) for 5
hosts, with a similar Affinity Label, and I ran a test where I perform
outstanding upgrades from the Administration Portal on any host (where I chose
that the host be rebooted), the host is moved to maintenance, updates are
installed and host is rebooted, I still get the same issue where the entire
cluster with every single VM including HE goes down. Is there an additional
configuration that needs to be set/tweaked for the cluster not to fail?

[ovirt-users] Re: Ovirt 4.5 HA over NFS fails when a single host goes down

2024-02-27 Thread Mark R
You must not have an even number of HE-capable nodes. What you're running into
is a classic split-brain scenario, with only two nodes allowed to run the HE,
and one of the nodes down, the surviving host does not have quorum so does not
know it can safely power off the other machine (because obviously this
surviving node, from its viewpoint, may have somehow become isolated from the
network while the other host is happily alive and running the engine and
controlling everything).

In clustering, you _never_ want two, or four, or six of something. One, three,
five, etc... because it must be impossible to have a "tie" situation when the
decisions are being made on which hosts are needing to be fenced.

Hi Jonas,

New packages are currently being signed with the new 4096 bit key, which
can be downloaded from:
https://resources.ovirt.org/pub/keys/RPM-GPG-ovirt-v4

It was supplied automatically for EL9/C9S releases, but missed the EL8/C8S
release packages.

Can you please try to import the new key manually and check if it helps?

Thanks in advance,

2024-02-23 Thread Jonas
I just ran into the same issue when trying to upgrade an existing oVirt
Node host from 4.5.4 to 4.5.5. My problem seems to be with the package

you resign this as well or is there a problem with the mirror?

Does Ovirt has some default maintenance tasks? Or, I can identify them on

Because I don't have any script to put into Ovirt after new installation on Nov

2024-02-16 Thread nicolas
Perhaps you have some kind of script that periodically logs into oVirt
to perform some task and you didn't change that password to the new one?
If so, it will block the account after a few attempts.

Each time we change the password, we have to update a fair amount of
scripts that perform maintenance tasks. If we don't do so in a short
period of time, the authentication attempts make the account block
again.

From the engine log, the admin@internal seems login periodically from

If I fallback the password with the original one, all working fine.

Do anyone has the solution?

[ovirt-users] Re: oVirt nodes with local storage

2024-01-21 Thread Wild Star
Here's an example with one shared Storage Domain that works. (local.ca is an
internal domain)

/etc/exports (n1.local)
---
/data/images/ovirt/n1_data_storage *.local.ca(rw,async,wdelay,root_squash)
/data/images/ovirt/n1_data_storage
192.168.1.0/24(rw,async,wdelay,root_squash)

/etc/exports (n2.local)
---
/data/images/ovirt/n2_data_storage *.local.ca(rw,async,wdelay,root_squash)
/data/images/ovirt/n2_data_storage
192.168.1.0/24(rw,async,wdelay,root_squash)

NFS mounts (n1.local)
-
Server
n1.local.ca:/data/images/ovirt/n1_data_storage
Mount point
/rhev/data-center/mnt/n1.local.ca:_data_images_ovirt_n1__data__storage

Server
n2.local.ca:/data/images/ovirt/n2_data_storage
Mount point
/rhev/data-center/mnt/n2.local.ca:_data_images_ovirt_n2__data__storage

NFS mounts (n2.local)
-
Server
n1.local.ca:/data/images/ovirt/n1_data_storage
Mount point
/rhev/data-center/mnt/n1.local.ca:_data_images_ovirt_n1__data__storage

Server
n2.local.ca:/data/images/ovirt/n2_data_storage
Mount point
/rhev/data-center/mnt/n2.local.ca:_data_images_ovirt_n2__data__storage

Like I said, local storage is not ideal, because you do lose some
functionality. Also, If you lose a node, you also lose it's storage and its
VMs, but at least this way (using NFS), you can keep it all within the same
Data Center which gives you more flexibility by not isolating each node's local
storage to its own Data Center.

Once I move that /data directory (where the VMs sit) off the root filesystem
"/" to it's own LV, I'll try the upgrade again. I did find examples on how to
shrink an NSF, but I'm not sure how to handle oVirt's onn-pool00-tpool.

I did try reinstalling a node from scratch, but the custom disk partitioning
during setup doesn't seem to work. It would be nice if oVirt automatically
partitioned the /data directory to its own LV while sizing it with the
remaining disk space.

Yes, but... they will be different volumes...

For example:
/mnt/local_storage/9eee2948-2772-4d9c-9650-9df5e361353 (your local storage
created by oVirt)
/mnt/local_storage/nfs_share (your nfs share created by you)

chown vdsm: /mnt/local_storage/nfs_share

Export the path on /etc/export file.

Try it and let us know if it worked.

[ovirt-users] Re: oVirt nodes with local storage

2024-01-18 Thread Wild Star
Hi Gianluca,

One would think that moving the storage off the / (root) filesystem and moving
it to its own LV would be all that I needed to do to complete the upgrade.

However, come to find out that with oVirt 4.55, local storage can no longer be
shared with the other nodes in the same data centre! Although local storage is
not ideal, I am not sure why that change had to be implemented, but I do know
that I must have missed the memo explaining it.

That one node I upgraded has been rolled back to oVirt 4.54 and our entire
oVirt environment will need to remain at that version for now.

Thanks!

[ovirt-users] Re: ovirt-45-upstream GPG Key Error

2024-01-13 Thread Lev Veyde
Hi Jirka and Matthew,

We think that we resolved the issue, which included re-signing the packages
and re-creating the oVirt 4.5 yum repo.

Could you please try to re-fetch the packages in question and see if that
solves the problem for you?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the issue,

So I just re-ran the `dnf install ovirt-engine-appliance` on a fresh box

thanks you.

(FTR: i wasn't complaining per say; I was simply trying to point out
there there was a (potential) issue which people might like to look into

[ovirt-users] Re: oVirt Self-Hosted Engine Deployment Error

2024-01-08 Thread Matthew J Black
Follow Up: Is this related to Bug 2091581
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2091581) and documented on the
oVirt doco page (https://ovirt.org/download/install_on_rhel.html)?

After reading all the bug reports I'm wondering, because that Bug no longer
*seems* to be an issue (ie because of the python3-libnmstate now obsolescing
nmstate-plugin-ovsdb) whether we can just update to the latest version of
python3-libnmstate and so that part of the doco is now no-longer necessary?

Or is this a completely separate issue (which deserves its own thread)?

Cheers

It's actually Rocky Linux v9.3 - I was using the term "RHEL" genrically
- I suppose I should have used "EL" or "RL" instead.

Why install on RHEL now... I've been using CentOS Stream 9 with UEFI
for about 6 months and everything is working...

Cheers!

[ovirt-users] Re: [oVirt 4.4][RockyLinux 8.9] Engine loses connectivity with freshly installed hosts after network setup

2023-12-27 Thread Cyril VINH-TUNG
Hello

I finally found the issue :
I forgot to say I have a static route to ovirt configured on the hosts (it's
not the default route)

The issue was that when I added the static route using static-route.yml +
nmstatectl
(https://ovirt.org/documentation/administration_guide/index.html#proc-Adding-a-static-route-on-a-host),
the route did not match the main table-id and the packets did not take the
route.
I had to edit manually the route with nmstatectl edit to change the table-id to
the right one

I Hope it will help someone

Another +1 - We've been using Rocky (8) for a few years now and its been great.

(Yes, we're prep-ing to update to RL9 at the moment, but we've had a "minor"
iSCSI connectivity issue just raise its ugly head so we're dealing with that
right now :-( )

And for the record: My personal ambition is to contribute to oVirt as soon as I
can "clear the decks" with some other stuff first, for what its worth. :-)

I also agree... I believe that, in addition to the location of the binaries
(which is different for other distributions), I think another problem is
going to a distribution that does not support NetworkManager.

I confess that I've never been a fan of SUSE, but it's worth staying up to
date with SUSE Liberty Linux...

2023-12-13 Thread Jorge Visentini
Hi all!

Just to sweeten the conversation...

We're running Virt 4.5.5 on CentOS Stream 9 and everything works
wonderfully. I tested the Engine and host installation using RL9 and it
also worked.
Here we used several Supermicros, HPE DL560 Gen10, Gigabyte CL2200 Gen10,
Dell R930, and they were all compatible.
We also use LSI SAS 3, PERC and other RAID controllers... all of them
compatible with Stream 9.
Of course, if you have much older hardware, there will be compatibility
issues, that's normal. It's the hardware life cycle, just like it works
with smartphones and video games.

All the best!

Supporting RL9 does also not mean we cannot support any other distro
next to it. For example CentOS Steam 9/10 and RL9 would be great.

But this will need effort from the community, otherwise you can give as
many +1's as you want, things won't change.

Then pay for redhat?

I really don't understand this. You want a free OS with a team of people
behind that help you within x hours if you have an issue, but you don't
want to pay for it.
Either pay, or use centos stream and report the issues/debug them
yourselves.

For what it's worth, I started rolling out an oVirt 4.5.5 release with all
the changes introduced in 2023 (and already available if you're using
nightly repositories as suggested, so no big news other than perhaps making
life easier to first time users).

If there's enough interest within oVirt users community, there are ways to
keep the project alive even with Red Hat phasing out (hiring developers
directly or sponsoring through a foundation ; dedicating time and resources
internally ; hiring consultants for fixing specific issues and so on).
The alternative as you suggested is to migrate to some other virtualization

August 2024 is very close if we are talking about a migration.

oVirt is very nice and powerfull, but if there isn’t enough maintainers it is
doomed.

2023-11-29 Thread Sandro Bonazzola
To clarify, CVEs with severity "important" or "critical" affecting oVirt
will be fixed by Red Hat engineers till end of August 2024.
This doesn't mean that anyone else can push a fix for lower severity CVEs
or push fixes beyond August 2024.
As many other projects out there, it will depend on how much the oVirt
community cares about the project itself.

[ovirt-users] Re: oVirt 4.5.4-1: engine-setup does not renew certificates

2023-09-15 Thread Lars Stolpe
Hi,
these instructions i found some time before in a documentation. I don't know
the exact place.
what's the point in configuring the engine setup to use
SSO_ALTERNATE_ENGINE_FQDNS if it is for using external certificates only?

I do use engine-setup generated certificates. I want to add the short name of
the engine.
How do i get engine-setup to use alternative names for engine-setup generated
certificates?

Best regards,

Lars

Where did you copy this from?

engine-setup can renew certificates that were generated by itself, not
any random cert.

If you add new names to the engine using SSO_ALTERNATE_ENGINE_FQDNS,
you usually use certs generated elsewhere, not ones from engine-setup.

[ovirt-users] Re: oVirt 4.5.4-1 OVA export generates incomplete XML tag in vm.ovf

2023-09-07 Thread lars . stolpe
Further investigations revealed actually two independent causes.
1. German umlauts (ä/ö/ü) in the description field lead reproducible to missing
letters at the end of the exported vm.ovf file (sometimes one last character,
sometimes the last two)

A short test (only one) revealed, that the suggested changes to pack_ova.py
fixed that problem.

2. If there are more than 26 .ova files in a directory, the import dialog throw
the same error message, as if there was no file existent at all.

Lars, since you have environments that this issue reproduces on
consistently, could you please check if the issue is resolved by replacing
that write_ovf function in the link above with:

def write_ovf(entity, ova_file, ovf):
print("writing ovf: %s" % ovf)
ovf2 = ovf if python2 else ovf.encode()
tar_info = create_tar_info(entity + ".ovf", len(ovf2))
buf = (tar_info.tobuf() if python2 else
   tar_info.tobuf(format=tarfile.GNU_FORMAT))
ova_file.write(buf)
ova_file.write(ovf2)
pad_to_block_size(ova_file)

Nope

We use the same components that we use for OVAs also for writing OVFs of
snapshots and for writing domain XMLs so I doubt the problem is on the
ovirt-engine side (as we would have seen more severe issues)

We store the OVF in the OVA with a Python script that runs on the host so
I'd suggest to look for a message that starts with "writing ovf:" in its
log [1] to see whether the script was provided with the complete XML from
ovirt-engine

If the complete XML was provided, you can change the pack_ova.py script on
the ovirt-engine side to debug why it's not stored properly in the tar
(OVA) file

The status of the VM changed from MigratingFrom to Up on the source host -
VDSM logs on the source and destination hosts should reveal more
information about what went wrong

[ovirt-users] Re: oVirt 4.5.5 snapshot - Migration failed due to an Error: Fatal error during migration

2023-08-12 Thread Jorge Visentini
Hi, Aran.

I know, but it is not a problem. I have 2x25Gbps QSFP.
I am testing with another iso now.
I'll be able to give feedback in a little while if it worked or not.

Cheers!

2023-08-11 Thread Aram Agajanian
Hi Jorge,

To get reliable migration, I had to have a 2 Gbps link. Before that, I
would migrate one VM at a time to avoid migration failures.

 Hi there!

 Is this information still valid?
To use Enterprise Linux 9 on virtualization hosts, the UEFI Secure Boot
option must be disabled due to *Bug 2081648 - dmidecode module fails
 to decode DMI data *
 .

I read that it was fixed in *python-dmidecode-3.12.3-1.el9* but we
 still use *python-3.11*.
Is this bug only for hosted-engine or for standalone too?
