[vchkpw] Vpopmail + Courier-imap as non-root

2003-07-11 Thread Joshua Pruitt
Ok, so I'm installing qmail + vpopmail + courier-imap.

Everything almost works.

But I'm stuck at getting courier-imap to do SMTP-relaying via
vpopmail's --roaming-users.

According to the FAQ:

2. Courier-IMAP doesn't detect roaming users in the vpopmail library
correctly, so force it by doing something like this just before
   compiling:
 export CFLAGS=-DHAVE_OPEN_SMTP_RELAY
3. compile courier-imap with --without-authdaemon --with-authvchkpw
4. Make sure you run your imap server as the same user as your pop
server (so open-smtp and tcp.smtp have the same ownership). man
couriertcpd for details, but you will change /usr/lib/courier-
   imap/libexec/imapd.rc something like this:
Change this line:
/usr/lib/courier-imap/libexec/couriertcpd -address=$ADDRESS \
To:
/usr/lib/courier-imap/libexec/couriertcpd -address=$ADDRESS \
-user=vpopmail -group=vchkpw \
So I do all of this by the book. Now, courier-imap doesn't work if I
add the -user=vpopmail -group=vchkpw directives to imapd.rc (as in a
vpopmail user can't authenticate).

According to /var/log/messages:

Jul 11 00:53:33 hoss authdaemon: authdaemon: s_connect() failed:
Permission denied
If I remove the -user=vpopmail -group=vchkpw directives from imapd.rc,
of course, the vpopmail user can authenticate via imap, but simply
cannot relay through SMTP.

I assume that I get the s_connect() simply because the permissions to
something aren't right. But I haven't a clue as to what that could be!
Everything in /home/vpopmail is correct... I'm stumped.

If I can't figure this out, I'll have to go back to POP (which I have
successfully got to do roaming-users as per the documentation, and
works perfectly), which sucks because I really want to use IMAP
exclusively.

Does anyone here have a courier-imap + vpopmail (+ mysql) + qmail setup
working properly in this fashion? What am I missing?

Thanks,
-Josh

Thanks to u first Ahmad.

In the mysql-configuration file /etc/my.cnf (in my redhat system) I

That doesn´t work.

What can I do? Perhaps put a link ln -s /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

2003-07-11 Thread Jens Benecke [work]
Hi everybody,

I am currently running a server with about 80 domains and about 30 users.
The server runs qmail+QMAILQUEUE+SMTP-AUTH+TARPIT, vmailmgr, daemontools,
dnscache, Squirrelmail 1.4, qmail-pop3d, courier-imap, and sslwrap for POP3
and IMAP. I also have Spamassassin and F-Prot included via Qmail-Scanner. I
additionally have several 'script' aliases (for example sending a mail to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] will cause a specific script to be executed as the user
who owns 'domain.foo', where XYZ counts as a kind of password for this
trigger).

Most users have several domains which I just created as aliases in the qmail
configuration.

I have now been hit hard by spammers (some idiot spammer has been using my
domains as Return-Path for a week and I get about 20.000 Undeliverable,
Please confirm and YOU F*CKING SPAMMER!11!! mails a day(!). I want my
users to be able to use TMDA for their domains and I would like a
user-friendly interface for this.

Now, using vmailmgr, I get the impression that most of the add-ons that are
desinged for virtual users are made for vpopmail. qmailadmin for example.
Also, I get the impression that vpopmail is much more widely used.
So:

- Am I correct? Is it a good idea to switch to vpopmail?

- Can I use vpopmail and still have my users read their mail with 'mutt'
locally if they want? Some of the users have SSH access. I understand all
mail will be handled by the 'vpopmail' user, that might present a problem.

- Does vpopmail allow some domains to be excluded and just be forwarded to
eg. /home/jens/Maildir/? (I don't need my own domains to be split up - I
just use a couple .qmail files for @jensbenecke.de).

- Is there a package of vpopmail that does not put everything in the
vpopmail home directory? I have /home mounted 'noexec, nosuid, nodev' (for
security) and I'm not about to change that. Binaries go in /usr/local/bin
or somewhere IMHO ...

Thank you!

hmmm this is the problem regarding mysql not vpopmail...
anyhow if you have changed /etc/my.cnf then it should work. I will suggest
better to check your permissions on folder where mysql want to create
socket... it should be owner by user that is running mysql
also kill all mysql process and start it again...

Re: [vchkpw] Changing from vmailmgr to vpopmail

2003-07-11 Thread Rick Macdougall
Hi,

The short answer is Yes. Vpopmail will be able to do everything you
want described below including using different system users for some
domains.

The long answer is to read the FAQ and documentation for vpopmail and
qmail. You will most likely have to compile vpopmail yourself to get
the binaries installed in a different location.

Rick

everything of this is runnable under vpopmail scheme

merely switching to vpopmail doesn't solve this issue, it's a spam well
known 'strategy'; (consider if this idiot want to spam aol.com million
email address with fake adresses under your domains as Return-Path)
you could solve it with qmail's tools like doublebounceto to free postmaster's
mailbox (this will not stop your waste of bandwith, just it'll avoid to
fill your hard disk)
or using several filters at SMTP level available in qmail.org to reject
this spam

Now, using vmailmgr, I get the impression that most of the add-ons that are
desinged for virtual users are made for vpopmail. qmailadmin for example.

yes and no; you can use several add-ons like Omail from Oliver Muller
(http://omail.omnis.ch/), etc;
It's true that qmailadmin/vqadmin community seems more active because a
inter7.com support and developping.

Also, I get the impression that vpopmail is much more widely used.

indeed

 - Am I correct? Is it a good idea to switch to vpopmail?
in your place, I'll consider more reasons that you pointed out here;
but's is your choice...:)
I'm running two servers to compare vmailmrg/vpopmail features and
benefits.

 - Can I use vpopmail and still have my users read their mail with 'mutt'
locally if they want? Some of the users have SSH access. I understand all
mail will be handled by the 'vpopmail' user, that might present a problem.

you're right

it's possible only forwarding from your user's vpopmail structure to
/home/user/Maildir creating appropiate .qmail files (you can use
qmailadmin or by hand taking care of permissions)

 - Does vpopmail allow some domains to be excluded and just be forwarded to
eg. /home/jens/Maildir/? (I don't need my own domains to be split up - I
just use a couple .qmail files for @jensbenecke.de).

under vpopmail, all you domains will go under ~vpopmail/domains
As above, you can configure all .qmail files that you need

 - Is there a package of vpopmail that does not put everything in the
 vpopmail home directory?

you can tweak installation at configure step of vpopmail package

./configure --help

to see relevant choices.

According to /var/log/messages:

Are you sure you compiled *without* authdaemon? You shouldn't get an
authdaemon error if you're only using authvchkpw.

Who manages the vpopmail FAQ? Can we add a line that says don't

[vchkpw] Using custom domain directories

2003-07-11 Thread Mike Miller
I made a posting a few weeks about this and didnt' get a reply... so here's
another shot.

When I create a domain and set a custom directory (for the domain) of a
users directory (ie: /home/user/domain.com/mail), you'd expect mail to go
into that folder (and user accounts to be created as
/home/user/domain.com/mail/username). However, it then creates a 'domains'
directory within that folder. Is there any way to have it accept whatever
directory I choose as the directory to add files to?

I know I can move the directory manually and then update
/var/qmail/control/users, however I'd of course like to avoid that and have
this done right. otherwise, maybe we need a documentation update to
properly describe how this works. Personally, I'd like to see the option to
just use the directory I specify rather than creating a directory within it.

Thoughts?

Re: [vchkpw] Using custom domain directories

2003-07-11 Thread Mike Miller
I should note more on what I'm referring to.
comments in the vpopmail.c source state...
directory to put the files is one of the arguments. this is the
files, not the domain.
 the vadduser usage output states:
sets the dir to use for this domain. Again, not the directory used to
_store domains_, but rather, to store _this_ domain.

Subject: [vchkpw] Using custom domain directories

Personally, I'd like to see the option
to just use the directory I specify rather than creating a directory within
it.

Thoughts?
