Re: Subversion 1.7

2011-10-17 Thread TheDO Webmaster
The Subversion binary is embedded in Versions. A new release of Versions is
required to get the latest Subversion.

1.7 is backwards compatible with earlier versions, so there should be no
compatibility issues.

Re: The architecture of versions installation

2011-09-08 Thread TheDO Webmaster
You'll be happier using a distributed version control system, such as Git. I
recently switched my company to Git earlier this year and have never looked
back. So much better and less problematic managing repositories. Dead easy
to create a repository on any box and have clones on any other box.
Push-pull between them. I used to be a die-hard Subversion fan.

develop are kept on a local server which myself and one other access

 our remote server.

I have been exploring Versions and also beanstalk, however I don't
want to store our sites online, I want to keep everything as local as
 possible before deployment.

So in a nutshell, I am looking to use versions to help manage our
sites locally. and also to manage sites after deployment like so.

Developer (local) -- Local Server Remote

Can versions use a local repository - but (when satisfied that
development is complete) Commit the site to remote server?

 I hope I'm making sense.
 Many thanks for your help.

Versions getting dusty

2010-08-15 Thread TheDO
(I tried to reply to an existing thread here regarding this to keep
that discussion alive, but it doesn't seem to be working, so I started
a new thread)

Versions is a great application and continues to work well for me, but
despite promises by Sofa to add more development resources to the
project, updates between releases continues to be very unpredictable.
They've said for a year that they are working on some usability
improvements, but these haven't come yet. It's been nearly 5 months
since the last update and there's been 2 Subversion updates since
then.

I'm not complaining, I'm just sharing an observation that is
unsettling with a product that had such promise. I guess we can blame
the changing landscape and the mass adoption of other version control
tools. Maybe Versions needed to be designed to utilize more than one
version control system, rather than limiting itself to Subversion?

I feel it's important to communicate about products that we are
passionate about. I wholeheartedly hope that Versions gets the love it
needs from its developers. Three cheers for Sofa and company. You can
do it.

The Versions representatives have stated that they are refactoring the

Multiple updates and commits could be queued and execute one after

open newly-added file from Timeline

I find the Timeline great at monitoring the changes made to various
open-source projects. However, for newly-added files, clicking the
file doesn't do anything. Modified files open up in FileMerge since it
has something to compare against (the previous version). Versions
attempts to do something with the newly-added files, there's a flash,
but then nothing. Is this a known issue? How does one view these files

Re: Update All Repositories

2009-12-29 Thread TheDO

The modal approach to the Update operation is somewhat restrictive,
yes. What it does allow is to see the verbose transcript of the update
operation as it happens. How do you see that working if multiple
repositories updated simultaneously.

It's important to remember that Versions is a GUI for Subversion. How
would you accomplish this simultaneous update at the command line? You
couldn't without several consoles active, but you'd still have to
trigger each update manually, unless you wrote a script.

So that brings us back to the Mac. I'd like to see Versions have a
built-in AppleScript dictionary of commands, as well as be automated
by Automator. Is this on the Versions' team to-do list at all? That
would allow end users like us to create our own such solutions.

you to do anything else in the app while it's running.  I'd like to be

Re: Versions won't quit in Snow Leopard

2009-10-07 Thread TheDO

I'm using Versions for dozens of repos and it's a fairly stable
product. I'm happy with it overall. But I echo your sentiments that
the product is not advancing at nearly the pace that it could be. Even
the simplest little tweaks are not making it into the product, despite
the team saying that the tweaks are coming. Really not sure what's
going over there at the Versions team, but I suspect one of two
things... they are overworked for the size of their team or they have
the iPhone bug and are diverting too many resources away from
Versions. Either way, this needs to be fixed. I, too, want to

Re: Auto Expanding Directories

2009-10-07 Thread TheDO

When switching to Changed mode, it auto-expands as deep as it needs
to in order to show all of the changed files. When switching back to
All mode, these same folders are shown as expanded. As Jasper
alludes to, it'll only auto-expand the root folder when switching
between repositories after collapsing the root folder.

(To the Versions team, I recommend that this behaviour be disabled...
honour the user's last change)

One tip you might find useful is option-clicking the disclosure
triangle. Click once and it collapses all folders. Click again and it
expands all folders.

Versions v1.0.5 - my feedback

2009-09-03 Thread TheDO

Waiting for transactions to finish...

Like others, after installing the update and trying to relaunch, I was
told that Versions was waiting for transactions to finish, even
though there were none.

Zero GUI improvements

I've been waiting for the Versions team to fix the Update button for
months now. It should be available when in any mode Timeline/
Browse/Transcript. While this may seem like a trivial issue, just the
need to switch to Browse mode in order to do an update and then switch
back to Transcript mode from there seems a little silly. I've already
been told by a Versions developer that this suggestion will be
considered. Why it hasn't yet is beyond me, as it seems like such a
simple thing to change.

In the same conversation, they told me that they're working on several
improvements to better streamline the interface and workflow process,
but nothing has changed in months.

Has Versions not been generating the revenue that Pico/Sofa expected
in order to keep the development resources on the project? It has huge
potential in my eyes, but something is falling apart from the top-
down. Just look at the Dropbox team for how these projects can
generate enormous activity and community involvement. They have nearly-
daily public betas and a very active development cycle.

Re: We just released the Version 1.0.5 update

2009-09-03 Thread TheDO

Just for clarification on my previous post... it was relaunching
itself... that was my interpretation of what my colleague was telling
it. The dialog says Installing and relaunching..., which wouldn't go
away.

I’ve just downloaded the new update for Versions. It has been
“installing and relaunching” for a long time now (almost an hour).
There is also a message box which offers a quit versions option. I’ve
tried quiting Versions, but no action takes place. It is greyed out.
I’ve tried shutting down, but it refuses as Versions is preventing
 it.

I'm going to try updating and then I will report my experience.

Re: Versions 1.0.4 Beta (Subversion 1.6 support)

2009-05-17 Thread TheDO

Generally, the version on the server is not crucially important,
unless you want to take advantage of features in a particular version.
If the server is running v1.5.5, you can still use a client in v1.4.6
mode, for example. The latest version of Subversion is v1.6 and only
the beta version of Versions supports that. The current stable release
gives you v1.4.6 or v1.5.4.

subversion 1.5.5 across all repositories on May 20th. I'm just curious
to know which release of Versions is most suitable to that
environment. I ask this only because I'm having difficulty finding the
specific date as to when subversion 1.5.5 was released. Somewhere
between Dec. 22 2008 and Jan 2009? I see that the latest public
 release of Versions was VERSION 1.0.3 (BUILD 56) - DECEMBER 2 2008
as published on your website. Should I press on with 1.04b2?

Re: Paid for Versions - can't register, no response from support.

2009-04-04 Thread TheDO

Dimitri, I respectfully disagree with your conclusions.

1) I've had great support from MadeBySofa. They did take about 3 days
to respond soon after public beta release of Versions, so that was
understandable.
2) I've had no trouble registering Versions on 6 different computers,
4 different internet connections.
3) I understand that my personal experience is not enough to judge the
quality of a product. If a problem occurs, I must also look at my
personal setup, not just blame the software.

Questions for you:
1) what were the three different channels you used to contact support?
2) did you get value from the app during the trial period?

On Apr 3, 11:07 am, dimitri pixelcorestu...@gmail.com wrote:

Hangs on processing the registration, like some others have
experienced.  This licensing/registration model is crap.  I guess it's
 too much to ask that:
1.) the license key they send you works, and
2.) there's support for this product after the sale.

It shouldn't be this difficult. $50 for shareware that I can't even
run...don't waste your money/time on this app.

Re: FR: Open with... as context menu entry

2009-04-04 Thread TheDO

Another workaround is to just grab a file (or files) and drag them
from Versions onto the Dock icon for the application you want to open
them in.

Or, grab the file, Cmd-Tab to switch to Finder, hover over
Applications folder, and then drop onto the application you want to
open them with. Sounds like a long, complicated method, but is really
rather quick.

I agree that this would be nice but a simple work around is to use
Reveal in finder and the use Open with... or change the default
 handler with command-I.

Did you previously install a demo version and let the trial period

Re: Subversion 1.6

2009-03-28 Thread TheDO

It's great to hear 1.6 support is coming. I want to put out my concern
around the bundling of the subversion client into Versions.app, and
not supporting external subversion clients. I know this has been
discussed before, but can someone in the know remind me (and possibly
others) why Versions is built this way? Is there something special
about the built-in subversion client?

Can't wait to see the next release of Versions. I'd be happy to join a
beta-testing group, if you need some more help in that respect.

Re: Change credentials for local bookmark

Unfortunately, Versions doesn't follow expected convention by offering
standard menu items for editing bookmarks, but it's still easy. You
can either right- (or control-) click on the repository and choose
Edit Bookmark... or with the bookmark highlighted, you can click the
Action menu (has icon of a gear) below the bookmarks column and choose
Edit Bookmark from there.
