One thing I learned about asking a zillion
questions when I first joined here. If you are a lurker . or not a lurker, and
you ask a question. ANY question. no matter how simple it may seem. You can bet
your last dollar that there is somebody else out there who wanted to ask that
very same question, but were too shy, thought it was a dumb question etc.. I
used to get off list emails from ppl all the time telling me I'm glad you
asked
the question you did, cause I have been wanting to ask that myself.

Perhaps I am out of line here, but I think that it is not the volume of
traffic but the quality that makes this group so special. I also am
impressed with the wide variety of tying skills for different patterns that
we can use as a resource on this net. So, thanks to all who have been so
helpful in providing me with answers recently when I was learning to tie
spider type flies. I have increased my knowledge, and skills, so much thanks
to you. Joyce

[VFB] Re: Shipping flies

2010-01-27 Thread Paul
Depends on what customs office they hit. I wouldn't mislabel a package
in today's climate. So when some inspectors see artificial fishing
flies, they feel obligated to open the package and check for possible
CITES violations. If they find a feather they'll request proper
certification from the addressee, at a big price!!! Way too much
hassle for me!

I've been able to get flies overseas in my bank check-boxes by labeling them
'gifts' or 'craft supplies' - value $10.

Another reason I like the check boxes is that I can send almost* any type of

mice, deer-hair flies, big sculpins, poppers, also dries-without crushing
the hackles.

* I say almost...they don't make check-boxes for 14/0 to 19/0 hooks  flies.

I belong to three (3) forums. Neither of the 3 get much use, and they have

However, the Lines End Online Fly Shop is still operational at:

Back before we went with Google, there was a Forum available on the

Joe, last time I paid VFB dues was in Feb. 2009. Rick used to remind us, but
he hasn't done that in a couple of years now. Also, the VFB website is gone.
the dues we paid were primarily to help defray the Server expense, plus a
little for Byard as VFB Webmaster. As for me, I won't be paying dues this year

Apologies to anyone I may not have mentioned, tis not intentional, I

I am happy to still be a member, although not a dues dunner (who was that?)

Rick,
You need my new 'Buggs' electric heat-traced fly-line' © T- battery operated.
LOL
Stays warm on cold winter days, and on 'Hi' will melt through the ice (if given
time).
Cranking the reel handle recharges the batteries.
Use ice-dubbed flies or polar hair.

  One thing I
learned about asking a zillion questions when I first joined here. If
you are a lurker . or not a lurker, and you ask a question. ANY
question. no matter how simple it may seem. You can bet your last
dollar that there is somebody else out there who wanted to ask that
very same question, but were too shy, thought it was a dumb question
etc.. I used to get off list emails from ppl all the time telling me
I'm glad you asked the question you did, cause I have been
wanting to ask that myself. Chuck

Re: [VFB] introduction

2010-01-27 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
Welcome to the VFB Chuck. I have a feeling that I can learn more about
fly fishing - tying from you than you'llever learn from me.
We go through these slow post droughts a couple times each year, but
somebody always stirs things up and we're off and
running again. I look forward to reading some of your tips and maybe
seeing a fly or two. We now have the capability of

posting photos on the VFB.

Again, welcome and jump in Any Time!

I believe that one of the reasons I get my flies through customs with no
problems is that the pattern with all the parts is on the card attached to
the fly. The customs people know at a glance if there are any Cites
violations. Joyce

I've been able to get flies overseas in my bank check-boxes by labeling

Another reason I like the check boxes is that I can send almost* any type

mice, deer-hair flies, big sculpins, poppers, also dries-without crushing
 the hackles.

 * I say almost...they don't make check-boxes for 14/0 to 19/0 hooks
 flies.

Depends on what customs office they hit. I wouldn't mislabel a package
in today's climate. So when some inspectors see artificial fishing
flies, they feel obligated to open the package and check for possible
CITES violations. If they find a feather they'll request proper
certification from the addressee, at a big price!!! Way too much
 hassle for me!

RE: [VFB] Re: Shipping flies

2010-01-27 Thread iain short

I agree, Ive had little problem with customs, my problem is having flies stolen
by the post office, usually the British post office.

I just posted Picric Acid dyed fly materials to the USA.
Picric acid is an explosive compound both as crystal and liquid (google it)
