[VFB] Hagensfish hooks

2012-01-03 Thread Neville Gosling
Hi Rick:

I'm not sure how this works without knowing the choice of other participants
otherwise there is the possibility of duplication of popular style and size.
Does each participant receive 1000 hooks? Are the hooks genuine Dai-riki (not
to be confused with Daiichi) or a chinese knock-off? The hook number system
appears similar to Dai-Riki's. I looked at the hopper style but they are $70.44
per 1000.

When Dai-Riki first came out (Dan Baileys) they were made in Japan, then later
in Korea, now

Mustad hooks are now made in China and Mustad have been hemorrhaging big $ and
have just been taken over by another Norwegian company or financial group.

Although I still use certain Mustad and Partridge hooks (made in the same
Chinese Mustad owned chinese factory) I must admit that I don't have the same
confidence that I have with a japanese hook. Maybe it is because the Japanese
made such good swords and their steel is excellent.

Re: [VFB] Hagensfish hooks- standards

2012-01-03 Thread Don Ordes
Maybe someone who was in the last hook swap can tell us what the quality of the
Hangensfish hooks were like???

Not only 'where' is important, but 'how' and of 'what' steel? There are wire
hooks and forged hooks, and the stock , metalurgy, and batching processes need
to be controlled and consistent.

What is the QC program? We know the Chinese lack in this regard. How well
controlled is the wire selection and manufactiring processes?

A Chinese-made hook with German steel and controlled Japanese processes might
be a good hook, regardless of make nowadays.

There are the different properties of the hook, also- the point, the barb, the
shape, eye, finish, etc. I've gotten a lot of name-brand hooks with crushed or
un-bent eyes and mal-formed points or barbs. I got an untempered Mustad hook
one time that I twisted and absurd amount and it never broke.

I've gotten bronzed hooks that rust, too. How good is the plating on the
saltwater hooks, and the quality of the stainless steel hooks for big-game
flies?

[VFB] hook manufacturers

2012-01-03 Thread Neville Gosling
As I understand it, there are 3 major hook manufacturers in Japan - Daiichi,
Gamakatsu, Hayabusa and they also manufacture hooks for brands such as Tiemco.

Mustad are all made in China. To my surprise, Mustad have been losing money and
have recently been taken over.

Dai-Riki started by being manufactured in Japan and then Korea. The last batch
that I purchased from Line's End were made in Korea, but the manufacturing
could have moved since then.

Partridge were taken over several years ago by Mustad and then about 2-3 years
ago were sold back to a company in England called Fishing Matters if I
remember correctly. For a period of time Mustad hooks and Partridge were made
in Singapore until Mustad opened it's own manufacturing facility in China where
both Mustad and Partridge production moved to. To the best of my knowledge,
Partridge hooks are still made in China by Mustad.

Eagle Claw are still made in USA as far as I know.

In Europe, there is a popular brand called Kamasan. These hooks were originally
made in Japan by Hayabusa, but then changed to another manufacturer and then
again. It would not surprise me if they are now made in China. This has
resulted in less confidence by some former users who have switched to another
brand.

In my opinion, one of the very best hooks are those made by Hayabusa, but I
have to import them from the UK where they are also sold as Fulling Mill as
Scorpion hooks.

Then there is Grip hooks by Scientific Fly located in South Africa. I don't
know if these hooks are actually manufactured by Scientific Fly in South Africa
or whether the hooks are manufactured elsewhere according to Sccientific Fly
specifications.

There are two or three smaller hook manufacturers in the Czech Republic the
best known of which is Knapek.

Re: [VFB] Dai-Rki hook breakage

2012-01-03 Thread Anthony Spezio
Allan,
They were not breaking in the vise. The barbs were flattened before the flies
were tyed. The hooks broke while catching fish. It was discouraging to cast for
a half hour and missing fish before finding the point of the hook was gone.
When you come over for Sowbug, I will show you the draw I have the flies in
with broken hooks.
Tony

I have had many many Mustad hooks break at the barb.

Interesting.  Maybe I'm not clamping my hooks tightly enough in the vise,
because I can't ever remember breaking  a hook in the vise, other some 28's.
And nearly all of my hooks are Mustad.

Strong grooved jaws cinched tightly on a ill-placed brittle hook = breakage.
