Thought I had dropped out of the swap so someone else could get in, but
since I seem to still be in it, I'll whip something together today.

After all I can't get out of the driveway anyway. The city plowed the
street. We now have a 3 foot ice dam at the foot of the drive. I tried
to take a picture of it but the storm door fogged and froze before I
could click the shutter. I don't understand this, since we've already
warmed up to minus 13°. But I decided nobody really cared to see a
picture of a perfectly flat white lawn with a driveway hding under it
somehwere, capped off by a 3 foot white pile of the same white stuff.

But hey, if Picasso was the artist with a blue period, maybe I could
have been the photographer with the white comma.

You would like to fish within walking distance of the motel/Bed Breakfast

The nice thing about the BVI, is that you must cross the Barnhart Road bridge
to get to their property. Their property is separated from the Beaverkill
Valley Road by the river. From the BVI you can get to the East Branch of the
Delaware, which has many access points for wade fishing. In August it will
still be ice cold from water releases early in the morning, 40 degree range
from the bottom of the Pepacton Reservoir Dam in Downsville NY. It is like
natures own A/C on a 95 degree August day. They have an indoor swimming pool,
indoor basketball court and a self serve ice cream bar. Breakfast is part of
your room charge. Last year weekdays were $167/ night and Sunday is a

with dinner, they have a cocktail hour with hors d'œuvres. It just depends on
how many people will be at dinner. They have a nice little bar with go
od spirits a plenty, fine wine and many craft beers. Tipping is not
permitted. If they are not serving dinner, you are allowed to eat at the
homeowners association club bar in Lew Beach.
There is a wonderful wrap around porch for sitting and reading. There are
many trails for hiking but it is black bear country so please bring bear mace
and/or fog horns. Just google either and make your choice. I alays carry bear
mace, a small horn and one 5 inch bowie knife as a last resort.

From the BVI, you can go fish the covered bridge on the upper Beaverkill NY
state park area a few miles away. There is a deep pool there. You can go
north on route 206 out of Roscoe and before you cross the Beaverkil River
Bridge, there is a torn off on your left to the Beaverkill River. Back down
206 towards Roscoe, there is another acces point. And of Course there is the
famous Junction Pool (the Beaverkill and Willowemoc meet to form the lower
 Beaverkill.

There is a cute little creek with two turn offs for fishing, Mongaup Creek.
It is up Mongaup Road which is off of DeBruce Road out of Livinston Manor.
Mongaup is a tributory to the Upper Willowemoc, up stream from Livingston
Manor. The turnoff to the pool, which I always fish, is the one with the v
formed plank dam, the second one after driving up on Mongaup Road. Do not
step out onto the dam. It is slick as goat shit. Plus I am not sure that it
would support any weight because of its age. A vist to the hatchery on
Mongaup creek is worthwhile. It is fed by 1,500 gallons daily of spring
water, which just emptys into the lower Mongaup Creek where the plank dam is,
 insuring water

[VFB] How far off is this fly from a Tom Nixon original?

2014-01-07 Thread Wes Wada
Hi VFB,

I am researching the origins and possible original recipe (if this is
actually a Tom Nixon creation) for this fly:

http://chemprof.tripod.com/midnite2.htm

Is this a Tom Nixon original tied in the way he did it, or a variation
created by someone else that is distantly related to Nixon's creations?

I know that Nixon did the Calcasieu Pig Boat, but am wondering about the
pedigree of the pattern configuration linked above.

Anybody know?

Thanks,

Re: [VFB] How far off is this fly from a Tom Nixon original?

2014-01-07 Thread Allan Fish

Wes,

I have a later printing of the first edition of Tom Nixon's book. In
it, the Calcasieu Pigboat was made from heavy black chenille, rubber
legs, and a spinner on the back of the fly tied on an extended piece of
monofilament.

If I ever get my driveway plowed and permission from my wife to get out
of the house, I'll try to make a copy of the 'recipe' and send it to
you. I can also send you a chunk of the chenille he used. It's very
hard to find today.

Somewhere in my collection, I've got an original Calcasieu Pigboat tied
by Tom. If I can find it, I'll include a photo.

In the 2nd edition of Tom's book, he dropped the spinner from the recipe.

af

p.s.: The above is from memory. I'll have to dig the book out to see
how well I remember it.

here. The first was destroyed by a Tornado, The second had a 70' tree blown
down on it in a wind storm on fathers day. This is the third dock and the best
one we had except for the high back on it that keeps me from fly casting where
the Trout lay and rise.
You need to come back out and visit with us.

The CALCASIEU PIG BOAT TYING INSTRUCTIONS
Hook: Size 2/0 Mustad 3366 (Or Tiemco 8089 #2)
Thread: Black Size A (I used 3/0 Monocord)
Skirt: Black rubber hackle or rubber thread that has not been separated
Hackle: Two or Three wide and long black saddle hackles
Body: Large black chenille for one pass or medium chenille with two passes
Eyes: Painted
Weight: Optional, this depends on how fast and how deep you want the fly to go
Note: you can use a variety of color rubber hackle, chenille and saddle hackle

My memory isn't all that good. My wife keeps reminding me of that.

I forgot the HUGE black hackle he palmered on top of the chenille of the
Calacsieu Pig Boat before he added the rubber legs.

And my book is the 2nd edition, the one without the spinner. I think he
decided that the spinner didn't add that much and actually fouled in the
rubber skirt. But that was 30 years ago when he demonstrated it so I'm
proud I remember as much as I do.

Allan,
That is for sure. Mr. Nixon was one of the most humble people I have
ever met. If I remember correctly he carried all of his materials, etc.
to a show in old cigar boxes and Mason jars! I also have a Pig Boat he
tied for me at one of the first Sowbug Roundups I attended but I
probably cannot put my hands on it without a lot of searching.
There are A LOT of salt-of-the-earth type people involved in fly tying /
fly fishing, a lot of them on this list. I hope I can get back to
Mountain Home sometime to see all of my extended family again - it has
been too long!

Wes,
I have tubs of flies that are not sorted . These are flies given to me by the
original tyers. I have tyed at a number of shows with Tom and he gave me an
original Pig Boat about 21 years ago. I would not know where to find it now
except going through the plastic tubs that I have the flies in. Due to some
problems I have, I am not able to do that. Looking at the photo, I am pretty
sure it is not the original. I sat next to Tom many times and watched him tie
that fly.
I recently sold my book collection so I can't look it up. I had Tom's books.

Hi VFB,

I am researching the origins and possible original recipe (if this is actually
a Tom Nixon creation) for this fly:

http://chemprof.tripod.com/midnite2.htm

Is this a Tom Nixon original tied in the way he did it, or a variation created
by someone else that is distantly related to Nixon's creations?

I know that Nixon did the Calcasieu Pig Boat, but am wondering about the
pedigree of the pattern configuration linked above.

Anybody know?

Thanks,
Wes

Although I hope it stays way North of you, I certainly want to get it
out of here.

Current in Greenwood, IN (think Indianapolis):
 Actual temp = -13 F (-25 C)
 Wind Chill = -41 F (-41.8 C)

But the plus side is that the 11 inches of snow we had yesterday is
now blowing and drifting.

We're hibernating today, thank you.

But hey, if Picasso was the artist with a blue period, maybe I could

Re: (Attn Peggy Brenner) Re: [VFB] Blizzard Swap first flies here!

2014-01-07 Thread Chuck Alexander
Peggy: Thanks. LOL.. It's been the Pink Panfish Producer since I started
tying in 2005 I think it was. First thing I ever got was a starter kit
from Cabelas, and they put in a bunch of odds and ends that they can't sell
any other way in those starter kits, and there was a card of Hot Pink
chenille in there, so it just say=t there, till one I day, I tied on a black
squirrel tail, hot pink body, gold bead head, and either a wet or dry hackle
(the fish didn't care and I didn't know any better anyway), and I went out,
and between me, my wife, and my sons we caught over 3,000 bluegills and
other panfish that Spring/Summer of 2006, then did it again till 2011 till
we couldn't fish very much during the last two yrs after moving/remodeling
etc. But we HOPE to remedy that this year, and even though we still have a
lot of work to do on the place, we decided it was not going anywhere, and
we're going to TRY and match those numbers this year. For us, it’s been the
#1 producing fly, followed by the Chili Pepper, then foam bodied spiders
coming in third. Chuck

But hey, if Picasso was the artist with a blue period, maybe I could
have been the photographer with the white comma.

that counts as a direct substitute in my book.

Wayne,

How old will you be when you retire? I was 58 and had to work after I
retired but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Buy all your big toys before you retire because you can't afford them
afterwards. But when you get your last toy,

get out of the rat race ASAP! VBG

I have been retired 20 years now and love every minute of it (almost).
At least I loved the retirement part of it.
