Re: [VFB] Juice-bug tutorial
I've stuck with Sooegoo II RED label as it is the one that works the best. However, I've also used GE brand silicone seal, clear (look on the information label and make sure that it says it can be removed with toluene or tolunol). Be sure to use it in a well ventilated space. Re: [VFB] Juice-bug tutorial- Joyce
The smell is gone as soon as it flashes off. That usually takes a few hours if the flies are outside in the heat. Toluene is extremely volatile..makes for quick flash off but you don't want to use it where there is a source of flames..ie, like near your furnace or water heater. I do mine outside when I've finished a batch. On Sun, Aug 1, 2010 at 9:05 PM, Don Ordes f...@tribcsp.com wrote: Thanks, One other thing. For how long can you smell fumes coming from it? Re: [VFB] Juice-bug tutorial
Wes I rolled the fly back and crimped the tail against the edge of the collar on the vise. Then I applied cement. When it was close to dry I released it and let it settle to where it is, and allowed it to finish drying. One I did this am I left a thread tag out the back and looped it around the tail with a twist and then cinched the tag end back to the hook. I call it the 'inchworm bend', because I do my inch-worms that way. There are some companies handling the vinyl cement thinner, but it's only in the 2oz. bottles. http://www.shop.charliesflybox.com/Vinyl-Cement-Thinner-Wapsi28.htm I go through that in no time. A quart of vinyl and the 3 chemicals in quart cans lasts me 10 years, and I use it for everything. Vinyl is a very tricky plastic, so the thinner for it is involved- needs to dilute without reactions. I got the formula from Ray Rumpf decades ago when he had to stop carrying it for shipping purposes (bulk). Vinyl cleans up with mineral spirits I think, but it destroys the matrix. It's not a thinner. This web site shows an 8oz can of vinyl cement for $11.00. That's not too bad considering they charge $4-6 for a 2oz jar of head cement. http://www.sailrite.com/HH-66-Vinyl-Cement-Quart Don't forget to get the needle-insert glue applicators. You flyshop can get them from Hareline. WORD OF CAUTION! Use with plenty of ventillation if you don't want voices in your head. So you're going to do a Jelly-rope DVD now? Kool!!! I have ordered some jelly rope. I went to the Spirit River catalogue to view and then ordered small clear, couldn't find chartreuse listed ( perhaps this is the hot yellow ) and the supplier I used didn't have the red but I did order hot pink. One supplier only shipped UPS and the cost was high so I dropped that one. Now, as to thinning the vinyl cement, do I really need a mix of all three of toluene, MEK Acetone or do they all work individually? Next on the list is the vinyl cement, I an see a jelly-rope DVD on the horizon. Neville (Nev) Gosling Greater Vancouver, B.C. Re: [VFB] Juice-bug tutorial
Thanks again for putting this together Don. I think it turned out really well. I would have glued most of the dubbing if I hadn't seen the tutorial!
