You can also put a cad of rubber cement or bees wax on the jaws of the
tweezers to help hold the bead.

I put some beads is a plastic cap like the ones that are used to cover "take
Outs" that have a recessed groove in the outer diameter. The beads will roll in
the groove and stay put. I then take the hook by the shank and use the point of
the hook to "catch" the hole in the front of the bead. I ho
Hi Tony:
Yes, I understand what you are saying. With the recessed groove located on the
outside, it would be easier to get the point of the hook near the hole in the
bead. I haven't used a "take out cover" but I can see the advantage.
I find it difficult to access the hole in the bead with the

I am not familiar with stretch tubing. Is that a brand or generic? I thought
Larva Lace was stretch tubing. I tied up a chironomid with Midge Size Larva

Nev,
Have a look at a couple of these.

The D-Rib is nice in that it stretches and it has a flat side.

Hi Mike:
When you mention D-Rib you got me searching. I determined that it was just a
matter of locating plastic shoe box #7 which I subsequently found. Inside was a
treasure trove that I had forgotten about. (grin)
Does anyone remember a product called Swannundaze? It must be at least 25 years
That is why I was going to use some database to inventory my stuff.
Someday I will do it. Then I will know what I have. I am like you I have
a number of plastic drawers filled with stuff - that is fairly organized
but then I have a few boxes. It is always a surprise.

Been there done that.
I have a load of Larva Lace stuck in a tub or draw somewhere in my room
downstairs.

Nev,
About the smallest I have done this with is a sz 20. There might be a better
way with smaller hooks but I seldom tie small hooks anymore. My eyesight is
getting old. LOL

Hi Chuck:
I'm sure it would work. Chironomid fishing is quite an art and can be extremely
frustrating. There are many times when I have caught nothing and other times
when the fish obliged. I don't claim to be very good at it. I am going to a
lake that I have never fished or even seen before,
Nev: I just wish I could have a chance to do some Chironomid fishing for
something besides bluegill LOL.. That fly has caught some of those for Me. Good
luck whatever you use, Chuck

I use tweezers with a very fine point, which allows me to pick them with one
side in the hole, the other side on the outside of the bead. I then insert the
hook point into the bead hole, release the tweezers and pull them out. I use
very small beads, routinely tying pheasant tails on 18 to 22 s
Another thing that can work in a pinch with small beads is to simply lick your
finger and push it over the larger hole of the bead. It will stick to the wet
finger, then bring the point of the hook into the smaller hole and slip the
bead on. This is the "Wet Willie" method, and works particula
That's exactly how I do it, and it works great, Chuck

Hi Tom:
I've tried a version of the "wet willie" method, but managed to stick the hook
in my finger in the process, not once but twice. (Grin).
I have a set of 4 different Sipel tweezers like
