  Chuck,
If using the dental loops, stick the tail end through the bottom of the
bobbin, don't go through the top end.
The thin tail end will slip through the bobbin stem and it leaves the loop
open to run the thread through it.

I buy a pack of the mono loops they sell for dental floss. They come in a
pack of @25 and are less than $2.00 at Wally World or K Mart. Since I started
using them, I haven't used my wire one's at all. If you really prefer the wire
threaders, let me know and I will send you one.

Re: [VFB] Re: Good fly (so far) on the Guadalupe.

2012-04-18 Thread Anthony Spezio
Chuck,
If using the dental loops, stick the tail end through the bottom of the bobbin,
don't go through the top end.
The thin tail end will slip through the bobbin stem and it leaves the loop open
to run the thread through it.

Joe: I like whatever kind works LOL.. But unlike that Mason
type hard mono that I wish I had some of to use, this mono I'm using, i just
can't seem to get that crimp to stay just right, and it is always too wide to
go
through the bobbins tube. Chuck

I buy a pack of the mono loops they sell for dental floss.  They come in a
pack of @25 and are less than $2.00 at Wally World or K Mart.   Since I
started using them, I haven't used my wire one's at all.   If you really
prefer the wire threaders, let me know and I will send you one.

Sean,
I am not trying to upstage you on this and yes, it has been tyed for many
years. It is called the one Marabou Plume fly. I have been teaching it in my
beginner classes. It is a simple and easy fly to tie and the students are happy
that they got to tie a fly. On the Creek and the White river, Burnt Orange
seems to work the best. Next best color is Florescent Green.

So, I took the Guadalupe Green Fly and bastardized it into my own bead-
 head pattern with no hackles.

This is the result. Pattern works well in yellow, white, black,
 chartreuse and olive.

Caught 5 bass with it this past weekend, plus a whole bunch of panfish
and one Rio Grande Cichlid. (The Cichlid turned out to be one awesome
fighter on a fly rod!) Haven't tried it on trout yet. Don't have
access to the trout sections of the Guad.

 Anyhow, thought I'd share.

I'm calling it a Bead Head Lupe after my home waters.

Sean.
You are not being cheap, just frugal like me. I tied for the shops and the
resorts for four years and learned how not to waste materials. I can go into
some of the ways I save on materials but am pressed for time right now. I might
do it later. As long as we are talking about wire, I use it right off the
spool. Start wrapping it and when I have enough on the hook, just give it a
pull and it breaks off at the hook shank. No waste.

I actually don't use it all that often. It was included in a tying kit
I bought about 7 or 8 years ago, and I'm still using the same spool of
lead. It and my extra pair of scissors are really all that remain of
that original kit. I just can't bring myself (yet) to buy new weight,
lead or substitute, until I use up the old stuff. I don't know, I
guess it's the cheap Irishman in me.
