I don't know if I agree entirely that you do less with less. There are several advantages to training traditional newspaper journalists to be able to use more media (writing for the web, audio and video) as well as re-training traditional photojournalists to take stills (and vice versa).

I guess that depends on what your goal is with your video blog. - Do you just want people to see you videos? - Or are you trying to make a living off your videos? If you just want people to watch you videos, then a good strategy for that may very well be to push them everywhere you can.

I use 2 pieces of equipment for getting steady cam like footage. I use a bogen/manfrotto monopod with a manfrotto 3265 (pistol Grip head). This allows me to balance the unit, not unlike the tripod set up in this video. As a bonus, I can also articulate the pistol grip head to alter balance.
