Not to dig up this old thread, but I've been pondering it the past few
days and wanted to add my thoughts
First, I'm sorry that you couldn't find any pertinent information on
DivX on DivX.com. That's terrible and something we struggle with and
aim to fix. DivX.com has become a hub of many
Thanks for your post.
What does 'open platform' actually mean?
You talk about people watching content from the web on their TV, and
this is indeed an important development. But theres a lot of
competition in this young area, and much variation in what
technologies are used. You are up against
Ahar in regards to TV I see theres a television that can stream DivX
content from a computer, which is an interesting start:

Random and possibly rubbish thoughts on how DivX can increase its
territory in the new online video scene...
Obviously
Open platform means you donât have to buy an apple product to play the
content you purchased. We arenât a closed system. You can buy a Sony
DVD player, a Philips portable player, a Pioneer in car receiver, an
HP TV, a Samsung phone. We want to open up the choices that the user
has as to
Thanks, that makes sense. I certainly agree that there are numerous
differnt profiles of mpeg4 and h264 which are confusing to people. If
someone came along and wrapped up a series of mpeg4/h264 profile,
resolution, bitrate etc specs, and gave them nice straightforward
names and logos to go with
In the DRM landscape it works like this. Apple media = iPod or
AppleTV, MS media = Zune or Xbox, DivXmedia = Sony, Philiphs, JVC,
LG, Pioneer, etc. pick one. And yes we are in the same space as the
others. We've been selling content with independent content producers
for 6 years now
I don''t want to get into a commercial here, but just trow out some
details.
DivX is based on the h.263 standard. The ipod can decode h.263, but
requires it to comply to the Apple standards. On the other hand, DivX
is integrated into a lot of devices as a feature on products

Can someone provide a simpler answer to why we would want to use the
DivX codec instead of mpg4 or any other? I'm just not understanding
this DivX thing but I'm constanting hearing some buzz about it.
Thanks for the help,
Tobey

Jon,
Thanks for that.
I tell you one thing you could do which would help your cause a lot.
Provide a simple explanation on your site of why people posting
online video should use DivX. Specifically with regard to my
concerns below:
I must be stupid, but I spent hours today - HOURS -
sometimes poeople talk shit in this group, some others who try to
help you get ignored

Historically when talking about divx files, they were .avi files and
the actual compression was mpeg4 of their own blend. I believe the
audio was mp3, dont know if they have changed that now, may be a
problem for some hardware thats expecting AAC.
Anyway in recent years they have promoted their
Paul,
Not sure I understand the context of your comment, but i'm hoping you
don't think i was ignoring your help because we already corresponded
on this - you were most helpful, I just haven't quite got to the

Rupert,
This is precisely the type of email that helps us.
As for complicated upgrades, If they are on Democracy, no. Fireant
should be fine also. For other people, the complication varies

Oops I keep typo-ing the word DivX, their file format is .divx not the
mangled .divzx I said in previous post.
Here is more general waffle from me about file formats, where we are
right now:
h264 was the last great technical leap in video quality/encoding

Interoperability is also not about downplaying the significance of

Despite all my waffle in the previous posts, Im reasonably confident
that right now I could create an .mp4 with mpeg4 or h264
I watch/listen to most of my vlogs and podcasts on my Creative Zen

Bea with me whilst I attempt to use 3ivx to help explain the mpeg4
compatibility issues that are at the heart of my wafflings.
3ivx is software that can encode and decode mpeg4. Its encoder was
considered to be quite a bit nicer than the Apple one that comes with
quicktime, and so it was
Cheers, yeah thats the other way to handle the mess that I have
presented in my wafflings, for enlightened device manufacturers to
pack in a huge range of supported formats (not too practical in some
cases though), or to bundle software that takes care of conversion.
It didnt take Sony and Apple

My impression of things is probably a bit wrong, Im probably
underestimating the number of DivX certified players etc that exist.
And yes when thinking of videoblogging, Im not thinking of the
billions of legacy files that consumers want to play, indeed Im
avoiding talking about that

As I understand things, there are 2 technical compatibility issues
which prevent DivX from being of interest to most people interested in
videoblogging and similar activities, like the general explosion of
any kind of internet video.
To be of interest it needs to be able to be progressively

Wahey, cheers Jim. Perhaps there is more hope than I thought that DivX
will rethink their strategy after seeing the ipod friends appear on
the scene.
Its perfectly possible I suppose to offer options in DivX to create
standard mp4 files for use with ipods etc, as well as maintaining
