You don't know any editing software and aren't comfortable with computers
period: probably get a mac.
Yes, they are both right. Both can use one system successfully for years.
I'd bet both can make the opposing system work well for them for years as
well.
It's largely preference, culture and comfort.

I have not had to do any hardware/ software maintenance or tinkering
around with the OS on my laptop in 4 years. It's on nearly 24/7, 365.
It just works.
I had malicious water catastrophe which was terrible, but I've never,
ever had to monkey around with the OS or anything.

you are all aware, I am a PC guy, edit, work, etc on a PC. Now I have, in the
past expressed my frustration with certain aspects of windows, however, as an
everyday work PC and editing PC, it's worked most of the tim
FW to USB cables/adapters will not work reliably for capturing DV.
If you are going to work with DV from tape, you need firewire for capture,
and ideally firewire or an esata card and drive for your media drive.

I don't know if this is gonna work but I would do some investigation. A
firewire to USB adapter cable. (sorry if this has already been mentioned)
