Re: [videoblogging] Videoblogging book is cancelled

2005-09-29 Thread Joshua Paul

Okay, chiming in...I've only written for O'Reilly. I don't work for them(!). However, from everyone I've met who's even remotely affiliated with the company, I can say they're a great group.Yes, they've recognized vlogging (semi-obvious since they started the process of publishing a book on it). I highly doubt they're going to work with others. They had/have the pioneers. Where else would they go? Why would they go somewhere else? I just don't see it.I think they were honest and didn't see it as a profitable market given the timeframe. I can guarantee that it was not an easy decision to make. People inside the company had devoted themselves to the book, too.I do believe that when they choose to pursue the video blogging market, they'll look to the same people. Wouldn't you?Hey, if I get the opportunity to do a second edition, I'd be ecstatic. We (my wife and I) saw this video this evening ... it's outstanding and
we really liked it and you're clearly an artist, much beyond the cool
effects of the underwater viedeo (by the way, we are wondering where
you live, that you have these really cool fish) ... my only criticism
would be that I wished you post more often, since I really enjoy your

I just set up the group. It's focused toward people who are, or have an
interest in,
combining teaching kids and vlogging. If that's an interest of yours, it'd be
great to have
you! I'm keeping it narrowed to teaching kids because a)that's what I'm
currently doing b)
Teaching kids and adults is very different and I think it will be useful to
narrow the focus a
little.

[videoblogging] Videoblogging for K-12 Teachers group

2005-09-29 Thread jonny goldstein
http://groups.google.com/group/Vlogging-for-K-12-Teachers

This group is intended for people engaged in, or interested in engaging in,
combining
teaching kids and videoblogging. Some videobloggers are teaching kids to vlog
with little
prior teaching experience. Some teachers want to implement vlogging in their
classroom, but
don't have much vlogging experience. There are a whole host of issues that
come with
bringing kids and vlogging together in an educational setting. This is a place
to discuss
practical nuts a bolts of combining vlogging and teaching, as well as broader
topics that
relate. If this stuff is of interest to you, it would be great to have you be
part of the
discussion.

[videoblogging] Opinions on maximum acceptable streaming rates?

2005-09-29 Thread Jonathan_Levinson
It seems as though a lot of vloggers are aiming for a 700 kbps data
rate. However, I wonder what proportion of the vlog audience has
connections that can offer a good experience (ie, no pauses or
painfully long buffering) at 900kbps or even 1 mbps?

Has anyone seen a video offered at high rates that we can check out?

I know that torrents, RSS and other download options can bypass these
constraints, but I do want to understand the limits of the streaming
experience for most cable/dsl home users. Also, I would assume that
anyone at school or in an office setting would have no problem with
those higher rates.

Any thoughts?

2005-09-29 Thread Mat Wall-Smith
Title: Re: [videoblogging] Teacher videoblogging group?

Why?

I don’t get thiswhy differentiate and limit yourself..i have had some good successes with research and creative projects that evolve within a wiki environment. Students work in blogs form groups, move to the wiki to develop ideas.. they encourage creative interference between media forms which need not be fenced of form each other in such convergent space.

Anyway..whatever.

I am in. But...need it be limited to video blogging?
How about other forms of sydicated and dynamic media.

Networked Pedagogy. I am not so sure it should always be divided up anyway.
It all converges. It would also make it a bit distinct for this list which
serves a that niche well.

David is also a good sport.

I saw this video today:
http://waxy.org/random/video/shining_redux.mov
Its completely illegal and the creator should be jailed and sued
according to our current copyright law.
i think its brilliant and am glad it exists.

and are you inferring that people using the web for file sharing are
like bugs that need exterminating?
this is the exact attitude that is killing the traditional media.

first, a good case has never been made that these industries are
losing millions from filesharing. a better case is their lack of good
product.
there is the famous quote from jack valenti in the 1970's about VCR's.
usually, once these new technologies are embraced...the media
companies make out like bandits.

no one is pretending.
people are making the choice.

patents and copyrights were only supposed to be for a short period of time.
i believe 15 years. Juts enough time to let you make your nut...and
then your ideas went into public domain.
over time...these patents have been extended into several generations.
this is neither fair nor logical for the community.

if a law is arbitrarily applied...is it a real law?

this is an important point to make.
if you have a car..and i steal your car...you are missing something.
if you have a digital file..and i make a copy of it...nothing is lost.
this is the paradigm shift...

as we have learned in the past...companies make more money when they
embrace emerging technologies.
if they fight ittheir loss is their own fault.
bad business.
you say that if i copy a song that i should be willing to pay the punsihment.
fine.
if a company refuses to allow people to use the media the way they
want with new technology, they should be willing to pay the price for
their porr business choices.
no one should be allowed to twist the laws to fit their paranoia.
this is the issue.
unfair lobbying influence due to the million of dollars at their fingertips.
we all have our weapons.

correct...and this is an important point to make.
Suing is a form a censorship.
if coke sues me...they know i cant fight them in courst becasue they
have more money.
this is censorship. plain and simple.

[videoblogging] Vloggerchat

2005-09-29 Thread Erin Nealey
Hey all... I know this has been mentioned on the group before, but I
just wanted to put a plug in for Sull's vloggerchat over on
vlogdir.com. As someone who is a little self conscious on the
videoconferences... this is nice (if only more people would come and
chat!) I also kind of feel weird, like I am bothering someone if I
follow their ichat/AIM link, so this is a great alternative. At least
everyone who wants to chat is already there. You don't need to worry
about interrupting someone who might not want to chat or might be in
the middle of something. Anyway.. come join us sometime!

What it means is the books on podcasting already in the channels aren't
meeting sales projections which means taking a risk on a book with a
smaller market doesn't make any sense from the publishers financial
investment perspective.

It doesn't mean there's not a market for it, but it does mean there's
limited interest in the topic in traditional channels. One approach you
could take is to contact the people at a company like No Starch, which
tends to take risks on books with cult followings and more niche topics.
The advantage to that route is getting access to the traditional
retail channels (through O'Reilly, ironically) and if negotiated
correctly, you could easily retain the electronic distribution rights.

Thanks Susan.  I've gotten over it, and I don't take the comment personally.  Vlogging, for me, is like a mirror.  It shows a little of who I am.  And hopefully, it's worth sharing with others.  In the very least, it's a harmless, and fun.

Regardless of which cable station or what benefits/profits, this is a
venue to be explored for vlogosphere content.  This is what groups
like DigitalBicycle.org are working towards.  It will happen and
it will be a great thing.
Revenue can be embedded with a little innovative thinking.

Re: [videoblogging] VlogTV?

2005-09-29 Thread Josh Wolf
Setting up a vlog TV station has a few practical concerns that need
to be worked out, but beyond that, I'm guessing the guy runs
infomercials 24/7 because they pay the bills of the TV station... I'm
not sure what sort of business model would work here with Vlog-TV.
The first approach would obviously be the traditional one, but would
there be ample interest in companies wanting to advertise on such a
station? Would the vlog community want there stuff to be screened on
television sandwiched between advertisements?

responses people here would have about it. Tv and the computer will merge soon

alternative/independent
media a bit better, and for people who are less wired, without
broadband...which is the vast
majority. So, please everyone...thoughts? fire away!

Videoblogging is all about using the internet as a delivery mechanism
for video. Why abandon it now? I agree with digitalbuddha. DIY. Find
an editor who will work with you and submit what you got to lulu.com
for on-demand publishing. You can have an online version too, to
supplement what you publish, and add updates as they come.

Damn, I'm so sorry to hear that.

You should think about making this into an ebook. Traditional books are great (I'm in the
publishing business, so I like books, paper, print) but an ebook might be a better fit for
this project. They can be edited easily, so they can be updated as the technology changes
and it changes pretty fast. This would also mean there would still be a source of income
which you all deserve. If you've got three quarters of the book written already it would not
be that hard to convert it to an ebook. Check out what the TidBits people are doing with
ebooks. I'm not sure, but I think an ebook could have hyperlinks and screencasts too.

[videoblogging] Tips for Email / IM / Networking ?

2005-09-29 Thread Jan

http://www.ryze.com/tips.php

A friend got me to sign up for this business
networking site (which I've never used since) but this little link came
through today that I thought some might find interesting and perhaps
discussion-worthy toward adding to our wiki.

What bugs me about most networking is that it borders on
'calculating' and that's not where my particular interest resides. But some of
the tips regarding emails to groups are pretty good.
