Martin Luther King Day posts
Posted by: J. Rhett Aultman [EMAIL PROTECTED] cuplan
Date: Mon Jan 15, 2007 12:13 am ((PST))

Hi, all.

I know I promoted a post here two weeks ago when I made a little New
Year's video card, but you'll forgive me for doing it again so soon.

I felt moved this year to make something for Martin Luther King Jr.
(MLK) Day. My workplace declared it a company holiday, and with some
free time on my hands and not really having any plans to attend any MLK
memorial functions, I decided I wanted to keep the day in my heart a
different way this year, and the more I thought about it, the better the
idea of making a vlog post about it was.

If MLK day is special to you like it is to me, please hop over to
http://www.weatherlight.com/freetime to see my video. Also, I'd love to
see any other MLK-related video posts anyone else makes, so please share
them in this thread.

Thanks, guys.

And once you guys set a regular booking schedule (a-hem - swami's aside), I
shall set a notification to this Yahoogroup to go out 24 and 2 hours in
advance of the videoconference.

Problematic is the fact that Yahoogroups notifications do not translate to
local time zones, but 24 and 2 hours in advance are accurate.

Regularly scheduled conferences allow for automated reminders... They also
allow for folks to get in the 'habit' of attending.

We like automated things. :)

Re: [videoblogging] Are you learning another language?

2007-01-17 Thread Deirdre Straughan
Don't be too hard on yourself. You already speak two or more languages that
I know of, and that gives you a huge advantage over adult learners who have
never learned another language - learning a new language is hardest for
them.

That said, you've chosen one of the world's hardest languages, and I've been
told that it takes at least 5 years to begin to speak Mandarin properly.
But, hey - better to try than not! And think of the sheer mass of people you
will then be able to speak to!

Re: [videoblogging] The audience of ten

2007-01-17 Thread Richard (Show) Hall
It wasn't a loaded question or anything, it's interesting to me because I
have trouble making the distinction, because I don't have a clear
distinction in my personal vlog vs my videos for beyond-ten - so, for
example, most recently I made this video from the media reform conference
that I really intended for a broader audience, and before that I did the
thing with Amanda that was like a play/movie/show with a sort of script and
everything that I really made for a broader audience and, many, many times I
think that I should start some different vlogs beyond the richard show that
were more focused on other things, wihthout a url that has my name in it,
but I barely seem to have time for the one, so I would like to say that I'm
just going for an audience of 10 and, in fact, in my best moments, it
doesn't really matter so long as I'm happy with my work, and I have a day
job, that's pretty good, so I'm lucky that I don't have to get paid for it,
but I can't help but attend to the download count, and, well, there you go
... I'm not sure where I'm going with this.

p.s. I'm glad, by the way, that you're working for a big audience with alive

I'll do the next three upcoming Tuesday FlashMeetings from 4pm-7pm PST

[videoblogging] I Want That Last Wimax Mile

2007-01-17 Thread [chrisbrogan.com]
At CES, I saw all kinds of traditional media. They had monster-sized
cameras, tons of lighting, and all kinds of gear. I watched these two
guys truss up a modded grocery shopping cart with their stuff, and it
took them maybe 40 minutes from lamps off to ready to roll.

I feel foolish pride at having my whole rig in a backpack. I've got my
videocamera, my laptop, an extra storage hard drive, and even an MP3
recorder, a pro-grade microphone, and a digital camera.

But what I don't have (and maybe this is because Mac doesn't have EVDO
or EDGE devices) is that last mile to upload my stuff to the net
from anywhere. Is it really that easy? If I had a PCM/CIA slot and an
EVDO card, would I have a 100% mobile media solution?

INSTANT broadcasting is another question. Is that the value of
Stickam, and if so, how come we're not seeing outside people's
bedrooms on that service?

Just thoughts. I was out in my car the other day, waiting for ice to
thaw, and I snapped a few pictures using PhotoBooth that went right to
my Flickr account because I was still loosely tied to my wifi. It got
me wanting live-from-field capture desperately.

What do you think?

Participatory Democracy. The one-day conference on Saturday,
February 24 will continue the discussion from the first highly
successful Beyond Broadcast, which was held in May 2006.

Broadcast media have long played a powerful role in shaping
political culture and mediating citizen engagement in the
democratic process, and the conference will examine how
participatory culture is putting the tools of media creation

I would like to set up some of the FlashMeetings for people to
present, talk about what they're doing and answer questions. For
examples, Casey and Rudy could talk about how they came about with
Galacticast, how it's been going, future plans and such. People could
ask question about animation techniques and such. Bre could talk
about his philosophy of making and modifying objects. Michael Verdi
could talk about freevlog and the projects he's know involved in. Jay
Dedman could talk about the history of videoblogging and the new
things he's doing like swajana.com. And so forth.

I think that format could make those FlashMeetings valuable and
interesting. I'm thinking the Saturday FlashMeetings would be good
for this since people are likely more available to come in on
Saturdays rather than the Tuesday FlashMeetings. This would probably
not be every FlashMeeting, only ones where people setup to present.
