[videoblogging] Hiltz Squared Media?

2005-09-27 Thread Vu Bui
Has anyone else been approached by this company via email about being on a new
show on
vlogging, a 13 part series? At first it looked like spam, but the sender,
Myles, refers to a
specific vlog of mine. He also sent an email to my brother Lan about his vlog
asking the
same thing and also referring to a specific vlog of his. Just wondering how
many people have
been hit up about this.

I have been off the list for a while so I apologize if this has been posted and
gone over, but I
searched and found nothing in messages.

this part is interesting - I remember reading blog/news entries about
the virtual sweatshops that have sprung up to make real cash from
playing in the worlds or games. I don't know if people were doing
this when we used to play in worlds away or alpha world the
moos, but perhaps they were and we never knew about it. (though I don't
recall being able to trade for $ outside the worlds). it sounds like
people are taking neal stephenson's ideas a step further.. another case
of fiction becoming reality.

Convert MOV file to MP3:1. Save karmagrrrl20050908.mov to your desktop.
2. Drag into iTunes.3. Select menu Advanced - Convert Selection to MP3

Then you would get a Green Day song with voiceovers by
George Bush. Not exactly what anyone wants to listen to on their iPod,
I suspect. If the usability of the soundtrack to pirate the music is an

[videoblogging] Vlog Critics Analysis

2005-09-27 Thread Mat Wall-Smith
Hi

Is anyone doing a critical vlog site. I really enjoyed reading the bare
bones reading and analysis of Zadi's post in The New York Times. It was good
to see another level of engagement and understanding being
practiced/developed. Zadi's work really does deserve this level of
engagement and I thought it was great to see that value being discussed.

It may also help counter the 'I've not seen any vlog worth watching' crowd
and ensure that great posts are recognized and discussed, maybe even get the
press to move beyond the 'people post video on the internet' novelty
account..

Anyway..anyone interested or have ideas on this?
Of course by 'criticism' I really mean thinking about how the post/medium
achieves what it doesthis is positive not negative and would only apply
to some styles of blogging -

Anyway someone might be doing this...would love to see it.

Mat.

[videoblogging] Curious About WebPod Studio-Any Details?

I just got the latest edition of Lockerkgnome and they had a brief
intro to a product called WebPod Studio.

WebPod Studio™ is software to produce audio and video PodCasts. This
program is designed to help both new and experienced computer users to
create, gather content and produce quality audio and video
broadcasting over the Internet.

The link is to download the trial product but I backtracked and found
the main site:

Has anyone tried this gizmo out or is open to testing it for the

[videoblogging] Company Makes it Own Definition of VB

2005-09-27 Thread Gena
I don't really want to stir this one up again, but if you look at the
description about WebPod Studio they use the term audio and video
podcasts

They do have an information page to explain what podcasting is:
http://www.lionhardt.ca/wps/whatispodcasting.asp

I only point this out because if you don't have a simple and effect
means of stating who you are and what you do others will step in and
define it for you. You may not like it but it is happening.

You are going to hear the term video podding. Just not from me.

People are going to use those words to explain everything from web
video, video blogging and soon Internet television.

Oh my stars and garters,

[videoblogging] Re: Zadi in Saturday's NY Times

2005-09-27 Thread Bill Streeter
Unless I missed something, I think this conversation misses the
point that it's a violation of copyright to use the music in
question as a soundtrack without permission. It has nothing to do
with whether people can strip a song out of a movie or not. That's
irrelevant as far as the law goes.

Not that I care one way or the other. I think we would all agree
here that the US copyright code is in need of serious reform. But
it's a good thing to be aware of it even if you don't agree with it.
I just thought I'd point that out. I liked Zadi's piece none the

Unless I missed something, I think this conversation misses the
point that it's a violation of copyright to use the music in

irrelevant as far as the law goes.

The point is not lost on me... As much as I can listen to people
rationalize their use of material for which they don't have the rights,
I will not do it. I don't want to be an example case when the lawsuits
start to happen. I also have respect for people who create works, as I
consider myself one of those people, and if someone used my stuff in
violation of the license I released it under, I'd be upset.

I'm a big believer in Creative Commons, and I dislike seeing people
just disregarding the copyright laws (even if I don't like them and
think they are screwed up.) I use Creative Commons licenses to control
what people do with my work, and they always have the option of
contacting me for alternate licensing. This just seems to me how it
should work, and I'd like to see more artists realize this as well.

I thought Zadi's work was really well done, but I always feel a little
sad when the good work that gets highlighted has a copyright violation
soundtrack.

Random things about Second Life:

I just posted a short video of video playing in Second Life. URL:

A lot of people (and me) who play Second Life do compare it the

I recently sold a piece of virtual real estate for about $50 which
probably earned me a profit of about $8.

Because you can script the things you build, you can create some
pretty amazing things. People have created many games inside this game.

You own everything you create in Second Life. Someone created a game

purchased and is being developed as a console video game.

There is, or was, a couple of college classes (one from San Antonio)
that met in Second Life.

A couple of people make a living selling objects, clothes and land.

Some of the things people sell a lot of are genitalia and sexual
gestures for avatars.

You can meet, talk, compete against and collaborate with people from

[videoblogging] Cheap DV Cams?

2005-09-27 Thread Pete Prodoehl

I've been using an old analog video camera for my videobloggging (which
is a bit time consuming when it comes to doing the analog to digital
conversion) and I've been considering getting a cheap dv cam, one of the
under $90 models I've seen from Vivitar, Mustek, or Aiptek.

I know these are just above being a toy to some people, but I can't
afford a nice dv cam right now, and from what I can tell, they typically
use SD cards, save in MPEG4, and give ok (not good) results. I'm not
expecting high-quality, I'm just after ease of use in a small package.

So, would the end results be better or about the same compared to a 5
year old analog video camera that gets digitized using a USB capture device?

Am I right in thinking I can just mount the SD card on my Mac and copy
off the MPEG4 video files?

thanks...

[videoblogging] Videoblogging book is cancelled

We found out that O'reilly has cancelled the Videoblogging hacks book.
The word from Chuck, the editor, is that their marketing department
determined that this book and 2 others were too risky financially.

what does this mean?

Answers are unclear at this point.
We are still negotiating the terms of the cancellation.
we should know more by Friday.
One possibility is to make it an online community project...a growing
book that everyone contributes to over time. Might even be better
since we can add hyperlinks and screencasts.
We have over half the book complete.

No bad feelings towards O'reilly...its a business choice on their part.
Reguardless of what happens, we'll make the work we've done help the
people who are leaning to videoblog.

please send any questions my way.

[videoblogging] Re: Cheap DV Cams?

2005-09-27 Thread Gena
There is a slow upsweep in the quality of the memory card camcorders.
There are limitations. Major players like Sony, Panasonic and a few
others will make the leap to create small but viable mmc's, with at
least 10x zoom.

If you can accept the limitations these camcorders have then your are
good to go. As an owner of one it is important to understand what you
be able to do and not do.

Epinions has a few reviews on mcc's
http://www.epinions.com/Camcorders--reviews--flash_memory

Amazon has some feeback on a few models. I just tend to follow the links:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002F8T42/104-3636739-7340766?v=glancen=502394%5Fencoding=UTF8v=glance

I am saving up for my step up DV cam. I love my mcc but it can't zoom,
the sound, unless the source audio is really loud, the tiny mic picks
up the sound of the camcorder working. And you can just about forget
shooting indoors with average light.

I now want better quality camcorder that is affordable and the ability
to port to other sources. This mcc is only for web video. But I have
to tell you, I'm having a lot of fun with mine. I'm recording every
chance I get. If you got a spare $150 - $200 do your homework before
you buy but I'd say go for it.

Is it possible to consider on demand self-publishing options? I don't
know what the contract says about repurposing content intended for

[videoblogging] Vlog Hosting

2005-09-27 Thread robert a/k/a r
Hey all,

One of the hosting services that appears to have pretty decent bandwidth and storage offerings just sent out this message today, which if true looks to me like a pretty good deal. I've been experimenting with them (at a higher price point because I signed up before this deal) for hosting and so far they seem ok, however it's really too soon to tell. Whilst I still find attractive the concept of ourmedia and other free services, sometimes (but not always) pay services are more desirable.

I've mentioned them before, and in addition to decent pricing (imho) they also give referral fees, so you could come out ahead of the game (the sale offering today states 80% off the first year).

BTW, if we had a page in the wiki for hosting services it might be better than posting here, and comments would be helpful cuz we would learn re reliability and such. I'm into not polluting this list with superfluous messages as much as the next person, hosting is a large-ish issue for video and the prices seem to be coming down.

Check out and if the referral code 888 (this is their 8th year of business and their anniversary) they proffer gives the deal they state then it's probably a good deal, but you will have to decide if it is for yourself. If the promo code doesn't work or is not as represented PLEASE let me know and I will write them regarding their representations because I have little time for BS offerings:

URL: http://vlog.registrar.com >

(full disclosure: as mentioned above, they grant referral fees)

Here's the message sent today regarding their 8th year anniversary 80% off sale:

x-tad-bigger	To celebrate we’ve made a bunch of changes:/x-tad-biggerx-tad-bigger
/x-tad-biggerx-tad-bigger * Unlimited domains and sub-domains on all hosting plans!/x-tad-biggerx-tad-bigger
/x-tad-biggerx-tad-bigger * Domain registrations are now $9.95/year (33% off!)/x-tad-biggerx-tad-bigger
/x-tad-biggerx-tad-bigger * If you have multiple plans with us the disk/bandwidth is now shared among all domains (no more breaking it down by plan)!/x-tad-biggerx-tad-bigger
/x-tad-biggerx-tad-bigger * The panel’s been re-organized a fair bit, integrating a lot of disjointed tabs into what we hope is a much easier to use format!/x-tad-biggerx-tad-bigger
/x-tad-biggerx-tad-bigger * For the first 888 new signups, you can get 80% off the first year of any 1-2 year plan by using the promo code “888/x-tad-biggerx-tad-bigger″/x-tad-biggerx-tad-bigger when signing up!

/x-tad-biggerAgain, if they are not being completely upfront or there is some gotcha or BS going on please let me know. thanks

I know a couple of people who have worked for Lulu
and recommend them highly. Quality is good, service is prompt, customer
service actually *exists*. It's a very good alternative.

[videoblogging] Video resolutions

2005-09-27 Thread Richard Bennett-Forrest
Since upgrading to Final Cut Pro 5, I've playing with Apple's
Compressor application a bit, and I've found that it will compress
H.264 better than the FCP5 export, sometimes a lot better. This is
even after tuning the advanced options in FCP5, and I think its
because Compressor does multiple passes and applies more logic to the
compression. It takes much longer, but is way smaller.

So much so that in my tests I was able to compress my standard H.264
320x240 videos down to a much smaller file size with roughly the same
video quality, but at 480x320 and 640x480 resolution, depending on
the content. Smaller file, same quality, larger resolution. Sounds
good 'ey?

I think we all standardised on 320x240 because it was a small file
size and consistent with client windows in Ant and other apps.

Which begs the question, are people happy with 320x240, or would a
larger size be preferable? Would Ant choke on larger sizes? Would
they be displayed at the larger size, or just be scaled to the
320x240 window? Same questions re the new iTunes video playback.

With bandwidth exploding, I'm seriously considering upping my output
resolution for roughly the same file size.

Does anyone have any concerns or feedback on this?

Regards,
  Richard

Re: [videoblogging] Video resolutions

2005-09-27 Thread Mat Wall-Smith
I have been (shock horror) watching vlogs in itunes since 4.9.
There are a number of reasons for this mostly because its there and its
easy. One thing I did enjoy was the ease of the full screen option. 320 *240
blows up suprisingly well to full screen but for the TV playback 640*480 or
720*576 would be grand - depends a lot on other compression settings tho.

Some have argued that vlogs should maintain there current resolution due to
'screen real estate' issues...Adrian Miles has argued that a smaller window
allows for a kind of granular engagement that is more appropriate to the
medium. (correct me if I am wrong)he has also written about bandwidth
issues I think.

It would be interesting to take a poll on how vlog entries are watched (on
TV, on Monitor, Aggregator, Browser, living room, work)
