[videoblogging] PeopleOfNewOrleans.com new video blog, feedback request

2006-05-07 Thread sdorfman.rm

Hello fellow videobloggers,

Today, I posted my first video to people of new orleans.com:
http://www.peopleofneworleans.com/video/1/

Any feedback about the site is very welcome. I'm new to this. Thanks!

And on a technical note:
Right now there's only a quicktime h.264 video, but I'd like to put a windows media version
online as well at some point. But I'm not sure how to do it right. I thought using a fancy-
pants _javascript_ to detect if the quicktime 7 plugin is installed would be good. I found
something here, but it looks a little old.
http://blog.deconcept.com/2005/01/26/web-standards-compliant-_javascript_-quicktime-
detect-and-embed/

Anyone have any experience with that or alternative suggestions?

Thanks again,
Simon

Or, use RSS with the Media RSS extension, andcreate a single Media RSS feed which would contain enclosures for all your video files.(Again, like with Atom, I don't think iTunes supports the Media RSS extension, so

[videoblogging] Questions: RSS, PSP, 3g, IP ...

2006-05-07 Thread wazman_au

I have a bunch of questions and thought I'd bundle them together, as
they all centre around customising my RSS feed depending on the
viewer's requirements.

I'm using WordPress, but not the latest version 'cos I've made lots
of tweaks and for the moment I'm happy with it.

1) Is it possible to have WordPress decide dynamically to send out a
different version of the feed, according to what client the user has,
eg iTunes, Ant? Stattraq tells me what client people use, but I don't
know how this data is collected or how to use it. I imagine the above
could be done by some sort of PHP script that would process the above
info, then call and spit out the corresponding feed. Sadly I know
nothing of PHP.

As an example, I might want to send out a .mov file for anyone who's
using iTunes or QuickTime, and a straight MPEG-4 file for all others.
Or I might like to tailor the content of a video depending on the
country of the viewer - is it possible to use their IP address to do
this?

2) Are there any good directories out there for users of the PSP who
are looking for podcasts, or free video content? I've found a bit of
info about 'PSPcasting' but it seems pretty fragmented at the moment.

3) What about directories for 3g content (i.e. playable on 3g mobile
phones)? Has anyone experimented with providing 3g versions? Did you
get much of a response? How/where did you distribute?

All the best everyone,

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Us vs. the UN

2006-05-07 Thread Deirdre Straughan

For the record, I get very angry with America's shortcomings precisely
because it IS, in some sense, my country. I was born there, I
maintain citizenship and pay taxes. But I've lived in many other
places.

I know firsthand that there is ignorance and poverty all over the
world, including America. I can understand shocking, horrific poverty
in India, Bangladesh, China, Africa... But America is the wealthiest
country in the world, and has been for a long time - WHAT IS AMERICA's
EXCUSE?

I think the Internet is important and worth protecting and can help
with a lot of things. But, before you can have effective Internet use,
you've got to have basic literacy. And a proliferation of information
sources begs an ability to judge among them, which requires a much
higher level of education. So I fear that the Internet spreads light
and wisdom mostly among those who need it least, those who are already
educated enough to find information and use it wisely.

There are, thankfully, a few counter-examples. But not too many. So,
yes, let's protect the Internet by all means. But let's not kid
ourselves that a neutral net will save the world. We've had a
widespread neutral Internet (in the US) for over 10 years now, and
George Bush still managed to get elected twice.

That depends on how much PHP knowledge you have. If you've you've got enough, you could just (re)write the feed component of Wordpress and get it to do whatever you want.
Stattraq tells me what client people use, but I don'tknow how this data is collected or how to use it.Probably from the User-Agent HTTP header the client sends to the server.
I imagine the abovecould be done by some sort of PHP script that would process the above

this?Yes, you can tell what country a person comes from based on their IP address. (Well, most of the time anyways. Sometime many many people from different countries share the same gateway, which has one or a handlful of IP addresses.)
Here's what I use alot: http://ip2nation.com/It's completely Free! And is formated for MySQL.(Of course, you got to do some PHP coding, or some other kind of coding to make use of it.)
2) Are there any good directories out there for users of the PSP whoare looking for podcasts, or free video content? I've found a bit of
info about 'PSPcasting' but it seems pretty fragmented at the moment.video podcasting and PSPcasting are really the same thing. (It goes by many other names too!)However,... the thing to note is that iPod can only play M4V files; and PSP's can only play MP4 files.
So,... basically you have to check each site to see what the publisher is producing. (Some produce only one of these. Some produce both. And some produce neither.)Just as a side note, you may want to consider producing Ogg Theora in addition to whatever else you are producing...
http://maketelevision.com/log/why_ogg_theora_matters_for_internet_tv
3) What about directories for 3g content (i.e. playable on 3g mobilephones)? Has anyone experimented with providing 3g versions? Did youget much of a response? How/where did you distribute? To be honest, I'm not really sure what formats are commonly supported on phones right now.
I believe there is a container format which (confusingly) goes by the name 3GPP. (Just for comparison, other container formats include Ogg, QuickTime, and Mastroska.)However, the more important question is what goes inside this 3GPP container format.
I.e., what codec is being use? (That I don't know.)To be honest, I don't like the whole 3GPP thing. It's basically a replacement to the Internet where you have to pay for each and everything you do.
You want to send a text message -- the equivalent of an e-mail -- you have to pay. You want to make a call, you have to pay. You want to watch a video, you have to pay. And don't even think about setting up the 3GPP equivalent of a website... or you'll really have to pay.
Honestly, I want wireless phones that hook onto the Internet (and NOT the cellular, GSM, or 3GPP networks).See ya--

the title seems to imply that I would seetranssexuals performing sexual
acts.-Josh**
I don't see anything wrong in zippy packaging of a
product or a message.

Regardless of their motivation, three thousand
people found themselves confronted with transgendered people listing the
injustices they endure.

I'm sure a number did watch the entire video
because the speakers constituted a "social show" of sorts to the extent they
varied greatly in appearance. Some looked like ordinary women.
Others looked like males who had had sex change operations.

If you're "selling" eithera message or just
tickets to a movie, your primary goal is to get the viewing public in to see the
show/hear the message. Wasn't the title of one movie about Jesus Christ
entitled "The Greatest Story Ever Told"? Would a film entitled "The Life
of Jesus Christ" be as popular?

My title "Transsexuals in Action" was not
inaccurate. This was the first time in the world that transgendered people
had come together to give speeches and march in the streets demanding their
rights. That's "action" isn't it?

Putting a zippy title on your vlog is no different
than putting a zippy cover on your book. The best book in the world with a
plain cover will die on the shelves. An intriguing cover at least gets
people to pick up the book (or open the vlog) and give the contents
consideration.

Writing a book that is never read is a waste of
time. Producing a vlog that no one bothers to watch is also a waste of
time. I'd rather be flooded with hate mail for a vlog I produced than to
get no response at all.

This is interesting. I've thought about this ... effectively daisy-
chaining WiFi to create an alternative internet. We all download and
run little applications that make our WiFi cards seek out and link to
the nearest WiFi networks running the same little applications ...
with gateways to the original net where needed to bridge the gap.

I have no idea how it could be done and I'm sure it would be a
security nightmare!

Re: [videoblogging] Re:Downloading from YouTube

2006-05-07 Thread Joshua Kinberg

When YouTube counts views they are actually counting how may times that page has loaded, not how many people viewed the video in entirety. You can witness this by simply refreshing the YouTube video page and watch the view count increase.
So, yes, I think a zippy title like transsexuals in action could lead to some distorted viewing stats by luring people expecting to see (or searching for) transexuals, which by the way is not an uncommon search term.
You could also name the video deepthroat blowjobs or something like that and watch the view count soar even higher!-JoshOn 5/7/06,

I don't see anything wrong in zippy packaging of a
product or a message.

Regardless of their motivation, three thousand
people found themselves confronted with transgendered people listing the
injustices they endure.

I'm sure a number did watch the entire video
because the speakers constituted a social show of sorts to the extent they
varied greatly in appearance. Some looked like ordinary women.
Others looked like males who had had sex change operations.

If you're selling eithera message or just
tickets to a movie, your primary goal is to get the viewing public in to see the
show/hear the message. Wasn't the title of one movie about Jesus Christ
entitled The Greatest Story Ever Told? Would a film entitled The Life
of Jesus Christ be as popular?

My title Transsexuals in Action was not
inaccurate. This was the first time in the world that transgendered people
had come together to give speeches and march in the streets demanding their
rights. That's action isn't it?

Putting a zippy title on your vlog is no different
than putting a zippy cover on your book. The best book in the world with a
plain cover will die on the shelves. An intriguing cover at least gets
people to pick up the book (or open the vlog) and give the contents
consideration.

Writing a book that is never read is a waste of
time. Producing a vlog that no one bothers to watch is also a waste of
time. I'd rather be flooded with hate mail for a vlog I produced than to
get no response at all.

Re: [videoblogging] Us vs. the UN

2006-05-07 Thread Ron Watson

Who is pushing the Information Toll Road Bill, Dierdre?? Not me. Yes, but if  you answer the question instead of cop out, you most likely would answer: the communications companies or what I call them,  the corporate Communications Cartel. Was it intellectual laziness and ignorance that led you to ignore the problem until now?Who said I was ignoring it? I spend several hours a day reading news and blogs (part of my job), so I'm well aware of it. And I do think it's important, and have written to my reps in the US congress already. I just don't think that the Internet (or blogs, or vlogs) is the universal panacea spreading peace, love, and wisdom throughout the world. And trying to position it that way is likely to undermine your own arguments. If you sound hysterical and overblown in one or several areas, it is easier for people to dismiss the rest of your points. It is good that you do those things. I have done those things as well. While I don't see the internet as a panacea for all the world's problems, I do see the internet, blogs and vlogs as the last hope of people to have a voice in this world. People don't have a voice in our government. People don't have a voice in the media. People have a voice on the internet. While everyone here in the states has a right to speak freely, they don't have the right to be heard. The internet gives us the right to be heard. You were the focus of that comment because you blamed the people for being intellectually lazy and ignorant. I agree that people are intellectually lazy and ignorant, but I don't blame them for that. 50 hours a week working...kids... yardwork...a little BBQ that's about all normal people have time for. Combine that with the blatant propaganda, and he said she said coming from the corporate media, and you have a recipe for ignorance that can hardly be blamed wholly on the individual. It is not some kind of CEO cabal that is doing these things. It is unaccountable entities that have more rights than you and I that ONLY serve profit. They get together to form cartels to make offers that civil society can't refuse. Please provide an example of a modern-day corporate cartel. I am prepared to believe that there are a few, but I simply don't believe that most companies can find their asses with both hands, let alone get together with other companies to evolve and maintain a strategy to take over the world. You are kidding, right? Cartel:an association of manufacturers or suppliers with the purpose of maintaining prices at a high level and restricting competitionCorporate Credit Card CartelThe Credit Card Bill that was passed last winter was written by the Credit Card Cartel. They joined together to push for policy that will ingratiate and protect them as their shotty and irresponsible business practices start to collapse upon them. This is an abomination! They are going to be able to charge whatever rates they want. They will be able to take your home for credit card debt. When the economy collapses, they will own damn near everything. Corporate Communications CartelThe Communications Cartel, the target of this topic, is pushing through policy that is not only going to raise prices for people, but it is going to change the very nature of the internet. It is designed to price people like us right out of the game. Corporate Oil CartelThe Corporate Oil Cartel has had a long and glorious history of hurting society and ingratiating themselves. There are only a handful of oil companies today, and these companies most definitely manipulate the market to raise prices and to restrict competition. Who stood in the way of CAFE standards? Who stood in the way of efficiency in general? Who has bought up and sat on solar? Who is experiencing record profits as people pay more and more for everything they buy?Corporate Insurance CartelHealhcare for profit, also known as medical extortion, is a product of the Corporate Insurance Cartel.A handful of companies have monopoly status in nearly all markets in the US. (I wish I could find the article a host of them fall under anti-trust laws, as monopolies or near monopolies )., Healthcare costs are skyrocketing, as coverage is being limited. This cartel has even worked to limit citizen access to the courts thereby limiting liability for negligence and malfeasance in order to escape their contractual responsiblity.Corporate Pill CartelAdding more misery to healthcare, the Corporate Pill Cartel has really pushed and prodded to get what they want. Friendly ex-lobbyists populate the regulatory bodies overseeing their products, and have made the FDA into nothing but a rubber stamp. Corporate Food CartelThe Corporate Food Cartel works together to patent living organisms and steal them from indigenous people. They work together to hide their ingredients from consumers. They buy out family farms and turn them into production facilities then sponsor politicians to get allowances made for their pollution, low quality products,

Welcome, this is the place to ask questions! If you are a PC user who
wants to post videos in QuickTime you have a few options.

1. Buy QuickTime Pro for Windows
It has a quirky way of editing. It is cut and paste, no transitions
unless you find them via a third party, but there are advantages to
using the program.

http://www.quicktime.com

2. Many of the consumer friendly programs have an export function that
saves in the .MOV format. Ulead Studio 9 or 10, Adobe Premire
Elements, almost all of the $80 to $100+ video editing programs have
and .MOV export feature. The advantage of these programs is that they
have guides or wizards to walk you through editing but have enought
punch when you are ready for more challenging videos.

http://www.ulead.com
http://www.adobe.com/products/premiereel/

This wiki page has more like resources:
http://www.voxmedia.org/wiki/Videoblogging_Software

If you camera has a video function that only exports out in .MOV then
you can't edit in Windows Movie Maker 2 (w/o 3rd party assistance).

If the file format is .AVI you can edit in WMM2 but you can't save in .MOV

Hope this helps...

Welcome.Firstly, I strongly recommend using QuickTime Pro. There are windows editors that will export QuickTime, however they do not have complete access to the QuickTime API. Specifically I think its the AAC Audio compression that they cant do ... which means you cant make ipod compatible videos. It's best, im my opinion, to use your editor of choice to export AVIs, and then use QuickTime Pro to convert those AVIs to quicktime.
I use bluehost for mys hosting. They're nice. Great support. They have pretty good bandwith offers too, but with services like blip.tv and ourmedia.org
, that shouldnt be an issue no matter where you go.- Davehttp://www.davidmeade.comOn 5/7/06, Gena

[videoblogging] Stuck

Grrr
I forgot that the reason I walked away from putting videos up for a
while was because I've got some frustrating issues.
But I was so excited to put together a Vloggercon Promo that I crashed
head first into the impenitrable wall of error messages.

Ok, here's the issue:
The files that come off my camera are mov.
I'm on a PC using Windows Movie Maker because Avid doesn't work for
some reason (retried it again today just for kicks, still not working).
I've tried multiple free converters (I've lost count) and none of them
worked properly.
PS Thanks to Verdi who suggested one a while back (it has been the
most successful of all the failures), I tried it but when I try to
play the converted video all I get is sound, it says that I don't have
the right codec (H263)

So, where can I get this H263 codec? I've looked all over for it and
I see lots of pages describing it but nowhere where I can get it. But
I wouldn't even know what to do with it once I got it.
Can someone help me?

[videoblogging] Does iMovie export .mov files, or do you need QT Pro?

I'm trying to get iMovie to export .mov files, but when I use the
save to quicktime function I get these .dv files instead. I can
muck about in expert settings and save to an MPEG-4, but I can't
produce a .mov file. Do I need to buy QT Pro?

Thanks.

Eyespot looks to be a combination of Yahoo! Groups and YouTube, only
you can share the video and people can save it if they have an

Basically it's a video sharing service. As such, I would think the
videos would have to be in the public domain.

Am I correct in assuming this David?

Could anyone please tell me why some of my mov files will start to play
before being completely downloaded, and others must be completely
downloaded before playing? I've posted five videos so far. Previews

play before completely downloading. Shows #002 and #003 will not.
This happens whether I am using the freevlog pop-up or a regular link.

[videoblogging] .M4V hosted by 11

Has anyone had any problems hosting .M4V files (iPod videos) through 11 Internet hosting? I usually have LibSyn host my video, but I've begun moving everything to my 11-hosted site, and now something has gone horribly wrong. FireAnt and iTunes both only see a bunch of files all with the same name: my domain with a .M4V at the end. So these aggregators are offering to download a bunch of files called
http://somethingthathappened.com.M4V. What the...? Does this have to do with mime type or something? Do I need to change my htaccess file or something? Thanks for you help,
