environmental conditions were I wouldn't be able to get them in the door.
I would like a few affordable = under $250 steadycam or monopod
suggestions. I've looked at the DIY steadycam but I'm not that
mechanically inclined.

The delay I was experiencing is due to being behind the camera in a
small, echo-y room. If you monitor via the AV mode, you get a buzz
from the video track.
