[videoblogging] VlogEurope - check out Rip! A Remix Manifesto!

2009-11-20 Thread Brett Gaylor
Hi Vloggers!  If any of you are headed to Amsterdam for VlogEurope,
just a note to let you know that the feature documentary I made,
including the work of many vloggers, is playing at the International
Documentary Festival of Amsterdam.  It own the audience choice award
there last year and they're playing it again since its been remixed
over the year at our website www.opensourcecinema.org.

Its a feature film about remix culture with Lawrence Lessig, Girl
Talk, Cory Doctorow, Gilberto Gil, and remix contributions from
thousands of others.

Its playing at 10:00 am in the beautiful Tuschinksi theatre downtown.

Hope some of you can make it!

Best,

PS those that won't be in Amsterdam can check out the film at
nfb.ca/rip or at opensourcecinema.org :) But its meant for the big
screen

[videoblogging] Homeless Nation needs your help!

2008-12-11 Thread Brett Gaylor
Hello, group! Many of you many remember our project
www.homelessnation.org from our presentation at Vloggercon 2006.
We've been very happy with the results of the project - over 3700
homeless people have learned to use the Internet, blogs, videoblogs
and podcasts through the site. We even won the Canadian New Media
Award and the Society For New Communications Research Award for
Excellence in Social Media this year. But despite the successes, the
project is nearing the end of its funding. So this holiday season we
have decided to try and crowdsource enough funding to last until we
hear back from our latest fundraising efforts. We really hoping it
will keep our outreach workers on the street and our servers online.
Please give what you can! We're offering gifts for donations over
$50. Below is our appeal for donations...thank you! - Brett Gaylor

---Homeless Nation 2008 Fundraising Drive---
We founded this website 5 years ago with funding from the Canadian
government, but sadly our pilot program has run out and we are
starting a drive to become self-sustainable. That means we need
donations to survive! Donations can be made here:
http://www.givemeaning.com/project/homelessnation

You can see in detail what your donations will provide at the link
above, but in general:

What HomelessNation.org provides:
-training and access to the Internet in shelters and drop-ins.
Increasingly, Internet access has become necessary for access to jobs,
healthcare, basic information... things you need getting off the
street. Few places provide this service for free. We want to help
provide access to help break the cycle of poverty.
-a forum to share information, stories and advice about survival and
growth. We have thousands of hours of user-generated video of stories
from the street on the site. Unique testimonials and experiences.
-training in web and computer literacy skills, as well as video and
editing skills.

We now have over 3700 members, and would like to continue growing and
providing this service. We are trying to raise $5000 dollars this
holiday season to keep alive.

YOUR DONATION WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Any donation is helpful.

All the money raised goes to this website and services. Most of
HomelessNation.org's staff are people from the street community.
Office space is donated. Administration is volunteered. We are a
not-for-profit. We make do on a very small budget.

Here's what you get for your donation:

All donations:
If you would like to give this as a gift donation, please specify and
we will send you a gift card certificate in the person's name.

Documentary film company EyeSteelFilm currently donates office space
and time to HomelessNation.org. For this funding drive, we are also
giving away T-SHIRTS and award-winning DVDs to donors:

Donations over $50:

or Women's, S/M/L/XL)
Available Shirts:
-HomelessNation.org
-EyeSteelFilm

Donations over $100:
Any available DVD by EyeSteelFilm (NTSC) - SIGNED by the director.

[videoblogging] Open Source Cinema - Girl Talk remix contest!

2007-05-07 Thread Brett Gaylor
Hey all! This is Brett from OpenSourceCinema.org .

I'm excited to announce we're holding a remix contest. It's to make a
remix video of Girl Talk, the mashup man of the moment. Jay and
Ryanne were just shooting some stuff with him when he won a WIRED Rave
award. We filmed him dancing with Paris Hilton at Coachella. He's in
Playgirl magazine next month. It's totally off the chain.

We've been filming with him for half a year for the feature
documentary that we're doing in co-production with the National Film
Board of Canada about copyright in the digital age. We're making the
film as Open Source as possible - the script is a wiki, and we're
putting up all the footage we shoot and inviting people to submit
their own footage and create remixes.

So we want to acid test the idea, and I've put up one of my edits of
Girl Talk - complete with the Final Cut Pro file and all the source
material. To shake things up a bit we're offering $250 cash prize for
the best remix!

Visit www.opensourcecinema.org/create to check it out! We've got lots
of other areas and remix requests on there - hoping to see some of you
on the site!

And if you have ideas on how we can improve the process, please chime in!

Best,
Brett

So far, however, the main improvements to Ourmedia independent of

Lots more useful tools and resources to come. JD has some great ideas

[videoblogging] Open Source Cinema videoblogweek video

2007-04-07 Thread Brett Gaylor
I had such big plans! But alas making this one video took nearly the
week.

It's the blog for the documentary I'm making about copyright called
Basement Tapes - I've created a site called Open Source Cinema where
I'm asking people to remix stuff that I've shot and submit their own.
I started building people's submissions into this cut:

http://www.opensourcecinema.org/blog/

Still working on the interface of how to make the site more open for
collaboration - any suggestions welcome!

Been watching lots of people's vids when I can - pretty cool to see
the explosion of creativity - remember a couple of years ago you could
actually watch them all!

Cheers,
Brett

[videoblogging] Open Source Cinema: vloggers needed!

2007-03-28 Thread Brett Gaylor
Record a videoblog karaoke mashup of the RIAA to the tune of
YMCA!!

Hello Videobloggers! Sorry if this shows up twice - my posts from
Gmail never seem to show up. My name is Brett Gaylor - I've been a
member of this community list since 2005 - it has helped me
enormously as a videoblogger, filmmaker and activist. I've had a
chance to meet some of you in person at Vloggercon last year, when I
presented a project called Homeless Nation that I helped create here
in Canada.

I'm writing now in regards to an other project - it's called Open
Source Cinema. It's a web and documentary project I've actually been
working on for over 4 years - one of those projects that sits on the
backburner till its ready - which is now. And its a project that
needs you to get made!

Open Source Cinema is the web platform for the creation of a feature
documentary film about Copyright titled Basement Tapes. Through the
film, I'm examining how our concepts of intellectual property have
been radically altered by the Internet. The film will use music as a
lens to examine the greater issues of gene patenting, bio-piracy,
medicine, and the ownership of culture. Its also going to be a lot
of fun - I'm filming with Negativland, GirlTalk, The Freelance
Hellraiser, DJ Food, John Oswald, Mark Viddler, and Lawrence Lessig
among many others.

This film is open source - and thats why I created
OpenSourceCinema.org to help make it. Footage I shoot during the
production of the film will be released under a Creative Commons
license on the site - and I'm asking for key remixes to be created by
participants like yourselves. I've created several requests for
videos to be created around key topics - using footage I've shot,
your own, or footage found online.

http://www.opensourcecinema.org/create

As well, the project has a wiki that will serve as its script. I've
just finished off the first draft, and I'm keen to see who's willing
to be bold - add their own suggestions, call bullshit, and ruthlessly
edit.

http://www.opensourcecinema.org/wikifilm

And finally - I'm looking for videoblogs from creators like you. I
want your opinions on the issue, as raw or refined as you see fit.
My first challenge is in acknowledgment of March being Boycott The
RIAA Month: The RIAA theme song by the New York Times' David Pogue.
I've started the first karaoke version - you're next!

To see what's going on - http://www.opensourcecinema.org - there are
tons of videos and clues and opportunities for collaboration.

The film is going to be released in 2008 - online, on TV, and in
theatres as well. I'm blessed with a co-production with the National

agency. They're excited to see the film spread as far and wide as
possible.

Hope to collaborate with some of you!!!

can't change it once someone donated. My bad.

[videoblogging] I'm almost @ Vloggercon but I need YOU!

2006-05-29 Thread Brett Gaylor

Okay friends, this is my final week of fundraising for
Vloggercon! With your help, I'm more than halfway to my total of
$600. Big thanks to many members from this list (Markus, Jay,
Ryanne, Michael thank you!) and my peeps from Montreal!

I've got six days left to raise the rest - I'm raising the money so
that I can participate in the Political Vlogging for Social Change
panel. I produce a non-profit website called Homeless Nation that
aims to help the Canadian street population share their stories through
participatory media.

Please check out the video I made about the panel here:
http://www.etherworks.ca/archives/2006/05/vloggercon_2006/

And then if you can, make a pledge here:
https://www.fundable.org/groupactions/brettvlog
And our website, Homeless Nation, here:
http://www.homelessnation.org

Thanks so much for helping, and I hope to see you all at Vloggercon!

[videoblogging] Please help send me to vloggercon!

2006-05-12 Thread Brett Gaylor

Hello group! This is Brett Gaylor - I have a videoblog at
www.etherworks.ca, and I run a non-profit website called Homeless
Nation. I'm writing in an attempt to get to Vloggercon to participate
in the political vlogging panel. I'm kicking in some of my own
money for the ticket, and so is my work, but we're still short a
lot. We're a non-profit and we try and sink all of our money into
staff, so we can't get me from Montreal to SF on our own. So I'm
hoping the community will help me out!

Ive made a video explaining what I'd like to do on the panel - it's available here

http://www.etherworks.ca/archives/2006/05/vloggercon_2006/

You'lll also find a link to my fundable.org site, where I'm trying to
raise the money. Last time I checked I was almost halfway there!

- Export your movie first. Compress it the way you want it to look on theweb.
- Then run through the steps of QT Thingie- Save the finished movie as a self-contained movie (you need to givethe file a new file name to be able to save as self-contained). *Do not*export. Just *save.
Then your links will work.
Right, thats whats I did, except the fast start header seems to have been stripped. Any way out of this?

It would be cool if the text filter in compressor could add links.

[videoblogging] Inserting hyperinks in quicktime?

2006-03-25 Thread Brett Gaylor

I found Andreas' Quicktime thingie
(http://www.solitude.dk/archives/QT-thingie/) for inserting URLs into a
quicktime movie, but I could only do it in quicktime pro. When I
ran the completed video through Compressor, it seemed to erase the
quicktime link. And when I exported from QTPro, the file was much
bigger than the mpeg4 quicktime I usually make with compressor.
When I tried to A) compress with compresor, and then b) overlay the
text track, it removed the fast start header.

Any ideas of where to go here?
Thanks!
Brett

[videoblogging] Memory stick camera that has mic input?

2006-03-15 Thread Brett Gaylor

Hello all - I'm tying to find a video camera a la the sanyo xacti that
records to memory stick, but I'm having a hard time finding one that
will accept a mic input - this is absolutely crucial. Anyone have
any suggestions? I know this has been recycled on the list a lot,
but not sure any of these discussions were actually put in one
place...would love any feedback.

Best,

Myspace won't go away tomorrow, but the site is still aprimarily a social means of keeping in touch and identity...as the
main users of this site (16-24)grow out of this stage I can't see themsticking with it.
All my group of friends are on it - we're about 26-32 - about 20 of
us. Most of us are filmmakers, musicians, or some sort of
artists. The musicians swear by it, the filmmakers are either
fascinated or disgusted by it, and the rest of the people like to
collect friends like pogs and talk trash about each other. We all
used friendster for a while and then got bored of it - this is slightly
different because it has such a critical mass of users and is now a
cultural phenomenon. If you aren't on it, you are seen as missing
an opportunity. Like I said, we're all professional artists so
are used to selling ourselves and aren't concerned about issues of
personal celebrity and all that.

ok, then you need to find info on the MT website.

The basic steps will be these:

1. backup your files to your local computer
2. backup your database (you know how to do this?)
3. Now you can either start a new MT install on your new host, and
import all your entries (using MT's import/export mechanism), OR
attempt to transfer your entire install by ftp-ing all the files,
re-creating your database, chmodding all the right directories. I am
not sure which approach is better.

You need to find the right details on the MT website, since this can be pretty complex.

Good luck!

on my non-commercial personal vlog, crediting the artist, ratherthan inhibit my creativity. No cease-and-desists, so far.
I'm with Chuck. I think sometimes the fair use argument needs to
be tested (although, I'm not sure Zadi's would hold up, at least on the
green day side of things...the footage yes).

The center for social media (http://www.centerforsocialmedia.org)
published a very good Best Practices For Fair Use that would an
interesting thread topic.

And on the other hand, I think we should be using podsafe music as a
matter of principle as well. If we want to start sowing the
future with work that others can freely sample, we have to make
completely CC Safe stuff, music included.

Not sure about Deidre's argument - just because you like a song, or its
the best one for your vlog, doesn't qualify it as fair use. Now,
if you want to push or argue for some ammendment to the law that makes
an exemption for personal or non-commercial use, I could get behind
that. The problem there is where do you draw the line? Would you
want someone using your work in a homophobic film, or a KKK
video? My personal feelings tend toward anarchy, but I'm not sure
you can build a system on that :)

By the way, you guys are LUCKY to have this argument. In Canada, our fair use rights are extremely narrow.

and PS, sorry couldn't change the title of the thread, gmail doesn't seem to allow that when you reply?

The perfect example of a potentially legitimate use of copyrightedmusic is Zadi's When September Ends video, which was written
about in the NY Times Critic's Notebook:http://smashface.com/vlog/20050924nytimes.htmlThen of course there's my Welcome to the Future video
which deals with this whole clash between copyright and ourdesire to capture, share, remix:http://blogumentary.typepad.com/vlog/2005/03/videoblog_week__2.html
Keep in mind Zadi and I could hear from record company lawyers.Maybe we could get the EFF to defend, but more likely it'seasier to simply remove the video. Worst case scenario would behaving to pay a fine, if the RIAA charges we're illiegally distributing
music. That would suck.-chuckhttp://mnstories.com--- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Pete Prodoehl [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Good point, but i'm talking about work that isn't released under a CC

their work to be used this way, how would one feel if their work was
used in a way they didn't intend or disagreed with?

Actually playing devil's advocate in this case, anyway.

Re: [videoblogging] Four Eyed Monsters

2006-02-22 Thread Brett Gaylor

They are listed under MySpace Film which is kinda like being listedunder MySpace Music, but in this case it looks like they get a sweet
videoplayer.
Yeah, the FEM story is really a myspace story - they were talking about
how when they showed the film in festivals, 3/4 of the audience had
heard about it from myspace, recommended from a friend. I think
we miss the point of we start talking about how bloggy their content
is or how divine it is, when what is happening is that they were able
to build an audience, and eventually maybe theatrical distribution,
from word of mouth. That is powerful.

I think they need to take a step back and embrace
the new media a bit better, instead of using the online medium essentially to promote an offline product.

Not at all, Richard. These are FILMMAKERS using videoblogging to
overcome the largest hurdle in the business: distribution.
They're using a videoblog to attract attention and gain an audience,
rather than selling their sole to a multinational to have their face
plastered all over entertainment weekly. Its really great.
Not everyone is interested in this medium for the same reasons (ie
videoblogging for videobloggings sake), and I for one am glad that the
ranks are diversifying.

Whats also great about FEM is that it helps other non-bloggy filmmakers
get it. I showed that to some non-geek friends and they really
began to understand the concept of posting regularly, staying
subscribed, being personal, and not always thinking about the product
in terms of how they can immediately make money.

[videoblogging] Anyone with experience with live quicktime?

2006-02-08 Thread Brett Gaylor

Hey all. I'm doing a live video feed with quicktime broadcaster
next week. I'm using drupal to do it. I've tested this
before, and found that different browsers react differently. I'm
trying to embed a live feed into a drupal module. The url is
this:(although it probably won't be live when you click on it)

rtsp://eyesteelfilm.qtss.retrix.com/~eyesteelfilm/marathon.sdp
I've tried inputting this URL in drupal, and it plays the live feed
fine (so cool). But I've noticed IE and Mozilla don't like it so
much. Is there any way to fix this? Anyone have any other
hints for embedding a live feed? I'd do it on a static page
(rather than drupal) if there was no other way.

I have a loaded pistol under my pillow and a crate of ramen noodles in my toilet tank.My backup plan of server switches, however, has a snag: Any time you switch servers, you have to change the DNS, right? Is there a way to make this faster ?
Or are you guys suggesting that with Dreamhost you could still host your HTML files, but have a backup for your movies?Yours in vigilance,BrettOn 1/27/06,

Or, if you
just change the video link in your post to point to your backup, your
Dreamhost plan may hold-up even better because each person only needs a
few k and their gone.
yup, its a good idea. Although it's basically what most of us do
anyway: we host our videos at ourmedia or blip, but our html and RSS at
blogspot or our own hosted domains.

I must say I was amazed to hear you say that you host your HTML with
dreamhost. Speaking of which: can anyone comment on the speed of
dreamhost to serve videos, and how much bandwidth they can allow for
this 10 buck rate?

rocketboom show ads' bit -- the Clerks 2 vlogs are clearly just that --
a promotional tool / ad. View Askew wants them to spread as far as possible.
yet technically still illegal. It would be unwise to spread the
idea (kitka) that its cool to use people's music if you're promoting
them. Generally it would not be the artist themself who went
after you - it would be the publisher (although these are sometimes the
same). So - even though you may love a song, and you
include it in your vlog, a corporation still might take issue with it.

Especially if you are popular (kitka :) ) . It could be construed
that you are profiting from a use of a song that is explicitly not
allowed under copyright law. What if, down the line, you do end
up making a profit from your work?

Anyway, I personally dont have a problem with it, but I don't think we should be giving advice thats untrue.

ALSO I think showing some QT footage is a different ball of wax than
songs - there are way more layers in music (publishers, mechanical
rights, record companies, etc).

[videoblogging] media detection using drupal?

2006-01-19 Thread Brett Gaylor

Hi group. I'm wondering if any drupal pros here have any
experience with media detection. I'm coming across some issues
with Homeless Nation about PC users not having quicktime installed, and
I'm toying with doing a redirect to windows media for users that don't
have QT. Anyone have any experience with this, or experience in
general that might translate into drupal?

Thanks!

Re: [videoblogging] Advice on microphones (for loud conventions)

2006-01-19 Thread Brett Gaylor

Kitka -
1) listen to Jan - she's a pro
2) it's generally better to seperate the mic from the camera itself so
you can get in real close. A boom person can make sure that the
directional mic they are using is pointed in the right direction, and
doesn't limit your camera to being super close to get good sound.
3) often we use lav mics, wireless ones, when we do interviews.
especially if we don't have a dedicated sound recordist. these
tend to be pretty expensive, though, for good ones - but since your
stuff is only destined for the web, it doesn't need to be as high
quality as it needs to be for broadcast
4) if you DO want to buy a beachtek, I've had one kicking around
forever that I want to get rid of. If you end up buying a new
camera that has XLR inputs, though, you won't need one. If not,
let me know! I'll bring it to the next meetup :)

The other advantage of having a beach tek (or a camera with XLR inputs)
is that you could have one mic that your interviewer holds, and then
another one on your subject.

cheers!

[videoblogging] Good political videoblogs?

Hi - I'm doing a meet the vloggers type thing in Montreal - we
started a videoblogging group in December, and Tuesday is our second
meeting (at 7pm if there are any montreal readers...). I'm
wondering if anyone has suggestions for good activist/political
videoblogs? Last time I did one of these I got some
feedback/criticism that I wasn't featuring any of this type of content,
and I assured the person it was out there. But now that I think
about it...can anyone suggest anyone? And not politicians
campaign videoblogs - we're having an election here now and there is
some of that stuff floating around, but I mean using videoblogging as a
tool for social change or activism. Suggestions?

Thanks! And Happy New Year to you all!

You could go with a USB webcam, like the IceCam:

I've seen them for around $25

If you want to use it with iChat AV though, you will also need IChatUSBCam:

 Which is another $10...
