[videoblogging] Need advice on how to offer a video for sale as a download.

2009-03-27 Thread Ed
Hi, I have a 2 hr DVD that I would also like to sell as a direct download and I
would like to know what is required from my websites standpoint. Do I need
extra bandwidth to support it, do I need to break the movie into short parts
for download, what special software is required for me to offer a movie
download and so on. I am a real newbie, so what are the basic steps I need to
cover from the time a potential customer lands on my website in order to get
the order processed and let the customer make the download? The purpose of
offering the video download is to expand the market for the product to
international, since shipping the DVD internationally is a bit of a problem in
terms of shipping costs, etc.

Thanks, Ed.

if you have a mac, use http://www.mactheripper.org/.
you basically need software that will actually extract the video file

anyone know a good one for PC?

Hi Daryl, Good observation about the youtube crowd in general, and let me
share how I view posting on youtube and what it does for me. I am a
motivational speaker best known for Free daily emails of the One Minute
Motivator. Recently I began posting video versions of them on youtube.
http://youtube.com/profile?user=motivationalexpert with the objective of
drawing people to my website and ultimately selling books. I view the
youtube vids as being a billboard on the side of a highway, some people will
turn off the highway and visit my site. My vids contain my website and book
info plus an offer for more free info, so for that segment of the population
that is into success/motivation, it does get them to come to the site, and
yes, I even sell books due to it. And yes, I get my share of really nasty
comments, but for me, only wins count and the youtube vids are a win. OK
good luck.

Hi Bill sorry for the confusion and thanks for taking the time to clarify

posts, or people post comments to my site, so at that point part of the
content is new or updated. Right now unless someone checks back on the

software you can to a wordpress 2.2 blog that allows site visitors to sign

they enter their email address into the system, they will get an email
notifying them of the change. So this software add on to the blog that
allows people to register for notification of updates is what I am looking
for. I currently have a RSS feed on the site, and perhaps this serves a
similar function. I am sorry I do not understand how RSS feeds work, so I
can't comment on that. OK Bill thanks again for asking and please feel free

a person will get an email anytime you make a new post.

Charles is also building a WP plugin that does this as well as part of

His plugin will supposedly let you customize how the emails look and read.

there is also a cool WP plugin we now use for comments.
a person can check a box when leaving a comment...and new comments to

OK Yeah thats what the RSS Feed is for. For instance, if I wanted to
read your blog on a regular basis I would just subscribe to your RSS
Feed in Google reader. I check my reader several times a day for new
posts in blogs and news I like and I read them there--all in one
place. That way I don't have to jump from site to site to read the
blogs I follow, or to check which ones have been updated. There are
lots of other tools for this too. Even some browsers have RSS
readers built into them. Most of the videobloggers here depend on
RSS to deliver their content to RSS readers or things like iTunes or
Miro or Fireant. MeFeedia is an online RSS media agregator. If you
manage your feed with Feedburner you can track how many subscribers
you have and see if someone is republishing your content via an RSS
feed. There is also a service there that will let people subscribe
to a feed via email. I personally don't like to get updates via
email as my mailbox is too cluttered to begin with so RSS is a
better solution for me. But I can understand that some people like
getting email updates so that option is there for them too. If you
want to know more about RSS and what it is and how to best use it

 interview.
When I'm distracted or not totally focused for some reason I find
   interviews

 That's

That opened up a part of his life that makes for great conversations.

 10) Listen, listen, listen. It's amazing when I listen to podcasts and I
can tell the interviewer isn't really listening and isn't asking for
clarification of jargon, or more depth on something really interesting
 that
was put on the table. Can you explain more about what you mean by that?
 I
really hate it when an interviewer is clearly NOT having a conversation
 and,
rather, only has 10 questions that were prepared and is rushing to get
through those. Use your prepared questions as a guideline, or a way to
 start
a conversation but DO NOT be a slave to them. That's the quickest way to a
boring interview that sounds stiff and stupid. (out of 600 interviews I've
done I've only gone into two with prepared questions for just that
 reason).
PR people, by the way, will ask for your questions in advance. I always
answer that I don't prepare questions in advance, but will give them some
examples of things I'd like to talk about. Again, talk about themes, not
specifics. I'd like to talk with Steve Jobs about the development of the
iPhone and the design process that led to that.

Hope these help you with your questions.

 Robert

Re: [videoblogging] Re: If you conduct interviews, I would like your opinion

2007-08-29 Thread Ed Smith
Hi Gena, thanks for that great reply.

First let me say that if the moderator or participants in the group feel
this discussion is going off topic, just let me know and I will take it off
list.

Gena, the sources you listed for info on interviewing were totally new to me
and represent the very reason I am doing this. I know I don't know
everything, I just don't know what I don't know.

You asked why I am asking videobloggers about this when I am a broadcaster?
Well Gena, in researching what is out there book wise on the subject I
discovered what little it out there, does not cover emerging things like
podcasts, videoblogging, even material being transmitted to ipods and
cellphones. Interviews are showing up in all of this media and brings
special demands never covered before. I want to cover it, so the book is
not out of date the day it is printed. I am a motivational speaker and
Verizon is putting my One Minute Motivator out as a cellphone movie message
and that brought up challenges for me I never encountered before in terms of
how to present it on camera. That made me realize there are many new areas,
each with it's own challenges. So I want vbloggers input to make sure other
vbloggers can learn from them and perhaps find techniques useful in other
areas as well.

I do not plan to put video on my blog for several reasons. First is that I
am not a techie and just getting the blog to the point it is, almost killed
me. The idea of learning to post video seems beyond me at this point.
Secondly the video would only be useful to the blog and not the book, so
unless I can figure out how to use it, say for instance in a separate
program on DVD, I wouldn't get any payback. See Gena, perhaps I am limiting
myself, but I don't see a large audience for this material, it is a small
niche at best in my opinion.

Thanks for pointing out that my blog content just consisted of a list of
questions. I am really new to this and now I realize that just posting a
questionnaire on line, will not cause people to flock to the site and
respond. I went back and fleshed out the questions and made some progress
in that regard, and will work on it some more.

OK, Gena, thanks again for giving this the thought you did, it was very
helpful and please feel free to keep the comments, questions, coming, Ed.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: If you conduct interviews, I would like your opinion

2007-08-29 Thread Ed Smith
Hi Bordercollieaustralianshepherd, thanks for taking all the time and effort
you did to answer my request for advice, you sure came through.

I think all of your tips are right on and useful. Although I plan to avoid
covering how to interview kids, you tip about getting the camera rolling
early is useful for all guests. I find have nervous guests is one of the
biggest problems I have to deal with. I once had a guest who was a member of
an elite military group, actually leap out of his chair and run out of the
room when the stage lights were turned on. Many of my guests are authors
and I have found that allowing them to hold their book during the interview
seems to work like a pacifier when they get crazy on me.

I also like the fact that you brought up the physical production side of the
interview process. Some people take that for granted and wind up not even
being able to do an interview because they took for granted that things like
that would be covered. I plan to put a section in the book explaining the
importance of covering those kinds of details and making sure you have the
right guest, in the right place at the right time. Details can kill you.

I think you said you had a follow up question but I am not sure I saw it, if
I missed it, please let me know.

OK, thanks for your great input and feel free to come back to me with any
other questions or comments. Ed W. Smith, [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [videoblogging] Youtube Group to complement this one

2007-07-31 Thread Ed Smith
Count me in, [EMAIL PROTECTED], I have 11 short vids on youtube and they
do a great job of giving me exposure and even selling a book now and then.
I only have about 1,600 views, which doesn't put me in the class of vids of
17 yr old girls, or pet tricks, but it is not bad. OK, thanks, Ed.

On 7/31/07, Rupert [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

So I finally figured out how to search for Youtube Groups. I found a
couple of dozen groups associated with videoblogging - but none of
them had more than a few members, and there were no fresh discussions

Is anybody else here interested in joining a group on Youtube?

As per the Facebook group discussion last week, I'd want a group to
complement the Yahoo group rather than duplicate it. It'd be a way
to share videos and connect with people on Youtube, explore the
communities and conversations there, even to inspire us to feel it's
worthwhile posting on Youtube, and to find more viewers.

If nobody says yes, I won't bother, because the last thing I want to
do is create another unpopulated dead Group.

But it could be a great way to build a bridge from this group into
Youtube, since it's often been remarked that there's so much
 separation between us.

My 'month of Youtube' has been a little slowed down by hectic work
home life, but I'm still as committed to exploring it more.

As I just wrote in an email to someone else, I do think it's a bit
mad that so many of us are not on Youtube more, given the much larger
number of people passing through there than through any other site.
Youtube has 50%+ share of all online video, but amazingly the
mefeedia figures show it has less videoblogs than other sites.

I understand that a few people will not want to deal with youtube's
TOS, their interface or their picture quality, but for a lot of us
who want to connect with other people and evangelize this stuff a
little, it surely makes more sense to spend some time hanging out on
the main drag as well as behind the bike shed.

What do you reckon? Who would want to join?

For everyone else, if you don't like the way PodTech is handling

Hi I may be able to give you some additional feedback after tomorrow.
Veoh.com is featuring my One Minute Motivator series of vids on their site
tomorrow. These are short success/motivation vids of less that 2 min and
in the vids is a listing of my website to go for more info. Now less than
10% of the general population is into success/motivation, so I expect that
only a small percent of the people seeing one of the vids will view the
other 7 One Minute Motivators currently listed there, but we will see. Also
it is my guess that the bulk of the people visiting video websites are young
men, and they tend not to be into success/motivation. So while I am
thrilled veoh.com is featuring the One Minute Motivator, I can't help
wondering why they picked it given what I think is their viewership.
Anyway, once I get some sense of the numbers of views, and then website
visits and sign ups for my free email version of the One Minute Motivator, I

The reason it doesn't translate is that there's nothing to translate.

Featuring puts a video in front of someone's face. The way the
culture works, if you put it in front of their face, they might click
it. That doesn't mean they know or care anything about what they're
clicking on. They just want to see what's interesting, OR they like
 looking at whatever's featured.

It's not the same thing as saying to a crowd of people Hey! I have a
show about XYZ! Would you all like to watch it? and they say yes
and you give them the URL, and they're actually invested in the topic
or your character or whatever the draw of the video is. All they want
to see is what they want to see right now. The fame part comes from
the being selected, not from how many people click on it.

It's similar to the reason why paparazzi shows stay on the air
indefinitely. There's a large group of people that want to know
what's popular right now. They want to know who got drunk at the
party and whose clothes fell off. They want to know who cut their
hair and who's coming out of rehab today. Once they get their fix,
it's time for the next fix.

This is why advertisers should be careful about attempting to estimate
popularity and/or ability to draw an audience from stats generated
from things like being featured and piggybacking on highly-viewed
videos with video responses. Someone might get 300,000 hits on
their video, but that's only because it was a video response to a clip
that got 2,000,000 hits. It indicates NOTHING about their ability to
draw, maintain and grow an audience, and as you point out, it doesn't
even mean that people will check out the rest of their series after
 landing on their featured video.

or your character or whatever the draw of the video is.

Hi Gena thanks for the great response, that was very helpful. What I meant
about the WAV file and I may have been misleading, is that they are going to
be video files, not sound files although there will be sound on the file and
well as the visual. OK, thanks again,Ed.

   Hi Edd66,

Well it seems that you have basic needs so you don't need the high
 priced toys.

You could to quite well with the entry level Canon, Panasonic or JVC
DV tape camcorders. For the set up that you are describing they all
will do a bang up job for under $250-$450 depending on model and features.

Now if you need that external mic you might want to look at:

 Panasonic GV500
 Panasonic GV300
 Canon ZR800

CNet has a list of camcorders with mic imputs. Read the specs
carefully to make sure it has an external jack and hopefully a
 headphone jack.
 http://reviews.cnet.com/4566-6500_7-0.html?sa=500871;

Cheap does not be bad but there may be trade offs you rather not make.
Take you time and take you are heart out of it. It is easy to be
seduced by a good looking camcorder. You want a high functional
camcorder at a price you can live with for the next two years.

 This part I don't understand:

video will be converted to WAV files. You are going to convert .wav
files into an audio file? For a podcast? You're going to extract the
 audio for another purpose?

 Or did you mean .wmv?

Anyway, thanks for all the help and suggestions!!

 from dvinfo.net:
I've discovered what the problem is with the external mike input on my
 HD1.

Both the adaptor lead supplied with the camera, and the plastic 2.5/3.5
adaptor I've tried can be pushed too far into the jack socket! If they are
plugged fully in, then you get lots of electrical noise: if you pull the
jack out about 1/16th inch, where there's a natural, but small detent
position, then all the mikes work fine.
So it's simply a mechanical design problem with the jack socket used on
 HD1,
certainly on the camera I have and from what others have said, on at least
 some others as well.

[videoblogging] Vlogger Con Jan 2005 - Today's Blizzard Reminds Me...

2006-02-12 Thread Ed Yarrish

Today's blizzard in New York City reminds me of January 22, 2005 when a few hardy souls braved the blizzard of that day to be at the first face-to-face meeting of this video blogging group. When I think about it, there were some phenomenally creative, entrepreneurial and technically astute people filling the room that day. Raymond and Deirdre (and her daughter) got the long-distance travel awards coming from Norway and Italy, respectively.
Of course, the PR stars of the decade - Andrew and Amanda - were there. I'll always remember Andrew's presentation where he made the commitment to have something produced every day, five days a week. I'll also remember the concerns he expressed about making a business out of his efforts.
There was philosopher king, Jay, whose sense of wonder about the power of this new medium seemed to energize the whole network that was being formed. ryanne added her special artistic viewpoint. Peter, quietly and unabtrusively, added his superior technical skills. Steve Garfield added his tremendous energy, and proved that no man should be limited to a single blog.
There was Michael, and his daughter, at that time the world's youngest blogger and star of ABC news. Does that record still stand, Michael? Also there was Mica, Josh, Jakob -- the party host -- Eli, Sean, Kenyatta and the indomitable Marc Canter. I also recall Scott from Feedster, Leslie from Chicago, and David Hall from Yahoo, and Chuck with his phenomenal sense of humor, and Chris W. whose human dog also knew how to laugh at himself.
I'm doing most of this from memory, and a few notes in my journal. Who else did I miss?My thanks to all of you who were there for creating a tremendous event, and a wonderful memory. Even the weather made it extra special. I learned an awful lot from the people who were there, and all the others on this e-mail list, over the last year plus. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience so generously.
I've put what you have taught me to work in a few small efforts of my own. One is a community exploration of art and nanotechnology, and the other is a
new business relationship with TEC, the world's largest CEO organization with over 12,000 members in 15 countries. We need to get more CEOs in organizations like this so they can learn about the triple bottom line -- people, profit, and planet.

[videoblogging] Video Camera for the Undercover Civic Journalist

2006-01-12 Thread Ed Yarrish

Some members of the video blogging community have identified themselves
as civic journalist. I wonder if a camera like this will open
up new opportunities for undercover work.

http://engadget.com/2006/01/12/the-self-guard-sg-210-button-cam/

I also wonder about the legal and physical risk involved, particularly
when you are not backed by a large organization that can give legal
support.

Some mainstream organizations have been trying to encourage people to
be civic journalists. I noted some of that type of encouragement
at the participate.net web site. These folks are trying to use movies to stir social discussion and action.

I am one of those lite users and I am still evaluating the new gmail

I deleted some of the items that gmail included, but kept some others
just to see how the feature works. I don't really know how to add

I use the Firefox browser, and I like the latest headlines feeds from

to know the audience make-up... and undoubtedly their are many who
really would prefer not to download, install, configure and learn to
use an RSS Reader application or even another web based

such applications, which is feed management/download scheduling, is
enough to make them add and use another piece of software. This
is because we have many 'lite' users who may only be subscribed to

We have moved a little further with another group locally:

[videoblogging] collaborative video project - IODOTO

2005-09-01 Thread Ed
I've posted a page and started a blog for the in one door and out the other
collaborative
idea discussed earlier in this group.

If you're interested in contributing to the project, please take a look at the
page I've set up:
http://www.sito.org/synergy/iodoto/

The blog is available at:
http://iodoto.blogspot.com

The basic idea is to create a series of videos which interlock on scenes of
people entering
and exiting through doors. There are two ways to participate. First, and
simplest, is to
create a video (90 seconds or less) starting with someone opening and walking
in
through a doorway and ending with someone opening a door and walking out.
This is
called a Segment. Second, you can edit together the Segments into a string
of scenes,
cutting them together on the doors. These are called Constructs.

I've posted the basic rules and some suggestions on the site.

Hope some of you will come play!

If you're interested in collaborative art in general, you might try the host
site for IODOTO,
http://sito.org/synergy

(opens door, walks out...)

[videoblogging] Re: collaborative video projects - ¿adonde?

2005-08-30 Thread Ed
Hi Juan,

Great to hear you're interested. Let's do it. I've posted to my blog about
the rules, let
me know what you think. We can use that post as a reference point on which to
build the
project.

http://bigtimetelevision.blogspot.com/2005/08/collaboration-modular-video.html

Anyone else interested in collaborating? Basically, you just need to make a
90-second-or-
less video that begins with someone walking in through a doorway and ends with
someone (maybe a different person) walking out through a doorway. Post that
video, post
the link in the comments of the above blog entry, and we're off!

[videoblogging] Re: Mefeedia + Audioblog + Playstation Portable vlogs

2005-08-30 Thread Ed
Maybe this is noteworthy... I discovered videoblogs by accident while looking
for software
to convert videos to PSP-format back in April. Now I'm a fairly regular
videoblogger and
still mostly use my PSP just to play video and listen to MP3's. The games are
still not all
that great (Hot Shots and Lumines being the best I've played).

I actually play more games on my Nintendo DS (two screens, one a touch screen)
than the
PSP. That might change if PSP were to start supporting Flash.

Will the software you're touting batch convert my videoblog entries to
PSP-friendly video?
Or just play them via a web-interface on a PSP? Or both?

Best,
Ed @ http://bigtimetelevision.blogspot.com

One final thing... this PSP is a bigger deal than you might think. It's not
 socially awkward
to have a PSP in public, and the fact that you can connect to the web over
 wifi to get
audio,
pictures, video (and of course the web) is a huge step. *Huge*...

[videoblogging] Re: collaborative video projects - ¿adonde?

2005-08-29 Thread Ed
I'm interested in participating in one myself. Perhaps we should just start
our own? I have
a lot of ideas. Don't we all? I think it's important to make contributing an
easy and very
modular process. That is to say there should be no waiting around for other
people to
finish their piece of the pie.

I liked e band, but it was really edit-intensive. Maybe we could do
something with
interlocking scenes bookended by specific transitional actions like passing
through a
doorway with a hinged door or going up some stairs. So, at the beginning
of a
submitted segment, a person would be opening and coming through a door into a
room.
At the end of the segment, they'd leave through a door (could be the same door,
or
another door). Several segments made with those parameters could easily be cut
to flow
together, albeit in a surreal fashion.

We'd keep a loose database of source videos, all of which could be mixed and
matched in
whatever manner seems appropriate. To participate, you'd have to submit at
least one
segment/piece. To keep things simple/short, we could impose a 90-second time
limit on
each submission.

The cool thing about something modular like this is that I could pretty easily
code a
random movie generator in Flash.

[videoblogging] Re: DTV, a loser?

2005-08-10 Thread Ed

I had no trouble getting my channel/feed listed on DTV. The thing's in beta, so I can excuse
the deficiencies for now. Yeah, it's another directory... but the exciting part about it for me
is the automated BitTorrent. As an aggregator, I like DTV's layout more than ANT... but DTV
seems to lack an easy way to post comments on what you're watching.

[videoblogging] Re: DTV, a (little c)loser. And ANT.

2005-08-10 Thread Ed

Great to hear that ANT's not abandoned for Mac. The interface, as it is, doesn't fit on my
desktop. The bottom drawer constantly goes off the bottom of my screen. I should go
check out the site for update-plans, but I'll run my mouth (fingers) off a bit more and
request a DTV/iTunes type way to sort videos into their respective channels. Currently
ANT for Mac just lists them in the order they were downloaded.

So much great stuff going on in the world of aggregators. In the end, I'll probably end up
using the one that provides the most fluid and stable interface to the following:

* subscribing
* keeps feeds discrete (so I can view all of Jan's videos in one go, for instance)
* variable viewing sizes (including full-screen)
* various video formats
* commenting/permalinking
* tagging (Vimeo/Del.icio.us/Flickr-style)

Thanks for all your hard work, guys and gals of the aggregator and directory teams, you
are facilitating a lot of great work and community.

[videoblogging] Re: Portland or Vancouver?

2005-08-10 Thread Ed

Podcast Hotel is coming up in Portland next month.

Don't know if they're adjusting dates or what, site seems to be in limbo. Anyway, that
seems to be a pay event with a lot of little satellite freebie events. I don't know what kind
of event you had in mind, but I assume it's a videoblogger shindig. If that's the case,
count me in as... well, I live in Portland. I only know of a few other videobloggers here and
their stuff is very infrequent.

URL of above:

Vancouver is a great city and I'd love an excuse to visit again. So keep me informed.

Best,

I can't give you specific instructions, but I'm pretty sure you can do split-screen in
Premiere, either by masking or by cropping.

Anyway, I thought all of the raw clips were going to be sent to one person to edit together
into a montage/stitch. Maybe I didn't read closely enough.

I'm ga-ga for split-screen, so I am envisioning masked vertical strips of each voice, moving
together to make one fractured but unified face. Of course, that means all contributors have
to shoot from roughly the same angle and distance.

Here's an example of some of my video/vertical-mask doodling...
http://www.sito.org/~ed/flash/looper/

I've used vertical masking in a few of my vlog entries...
