Hi schlomo,
It as come to me like a bolt from the blue... Just like some people
get to be Atheists. I am not a videoblogger, never have been. Good
luck to these people who think they are, good for them, it's great.
But I feel now that, I am not a videoblogger, yeah I use video, and I
sure use blogger(tm), but I think that's why I never got, and got so
very angry about and so frustrated with in the old days. I am just
not that interested in watching other peoples videos, an absolute
fundamental reason for doing internet video. It all makes sense to me

[videoblogging] Weekly Flash Meeting Proposal?

2008-01-17 Thread Paul Knight
Hi,

To all newbies and the more, should I say, Seasoned among us.

I am prepared to get the old flash meetings set up again, on a regular
basis i.e. at least once a week.

The best time really, due to time differences between europe and the
US is probably Saturdays, where folks from the US can hook up with us
over in the old countries can get together over the internet and
discuss or catch up with all things video and internet, the states,
saturday around lunch time, and the Euros after 8pm in the evening.

What I want from you guys however is:-

i. A want to do this kind of thing.
ii. A big name each week, ie at least one of the more successful,
award winning vloggers out there.
iii. most of the old crowd, ie, Bill Streeter, Verdi, Ryanne, anderas
etc.
iv. a regular time needs a time period, lets me know how long these
meetings should be.
v. Help with either setting up a wikki, I have no clue, really, the
wikki would be there just to advertise when the next one is.
vi. An ask the experts meeting every month, where all those who
know something would turn up and so would the newbies.

This is my proposal, as a great green way of talking to the people we
watch on the internet. All you need is a computer with at least
broadband access, a mic and if possible a cam ( webcam is cool, isight
better, camcorder is even better), however one of these is okay so
long as you also have a keyboard.

Of late not much has happened on these flash meetings, but it is a
great way for folks to get together and some time learn something or
become aware of other vloggers who you may not have heard of. It is
also great publicity and a way of interacting with the community.

Please let me know.

2008-01-14 Thread Paul Knight
1. You should definitely get an experienced pro to come in and do the
lighting setup for you. Then. don't move anything. When you need to
shoot,
turn on lights and shoot. J VERY tough to light green screen right, even
with good equipment, despite what many will tell you.

As videobloggers, should we NEED to hire people, or indeed buy or hire
expensive kit?

Nah, use flourescent tubes, as Jan said a bulb behind the talent, and
if needed a bit of natural light on the face, maybe a couple of
filtered decorating style flood lamps too. I have used greenscreen on
many of my videos, and if you follow he few basic steps, you can get
round all this bullshit with a few simple and cheap store bought
alternatives.

for instances click on http://pjkproductions.blogspot.com and maybe
these little gems will help you.

With regards to all non-French people who use Blip.tv.

Loiez Deniel lives in Rural France near to Claremont Feront, if you
google map it, you will see that he lives slap bang in the middle of
france, about oh lets see at least 3-4 hours away from Paris.

He has complain bitterly about download speeds from blip.tv for some
time now, but it's not only him, most of subscribers who live in
France have the same trouble. He has been in contact with French
Telecom, who explains that it is a parsing error or something like
that.

Although Loiez loves Blip.tv due it's great free hosting ability to
share and download videos in quicktime etc, as well as the flash
looking just right, he has found it more and more frustrating
downloading the uploaded video. Which really is a problem.

So does anyone know of any blip-like sites that loiez could probably
try until either blip or french telecom get their collective acts
together? Baring in mind that Loiez uses widescreen HD, even
sometimes super widescreen in his work.

as Bill said, if your video was playingyou would know about it

Pixelodeon was not a voting contest.
we chose different curators who then created their screenings based

The goal is not to show the best...but to show the varied kinds of

The wiki was a place that the community could suggest videos to screen

I've bought it and love it, clarity and very small file sizes, as
well as the encoding is quick and you can play them on certain DVD
Players.

I use a quicktime jacket when uploading to blip.tv and I have had no
complaints so far.

Try it, why not. There is also a great community over at stage6.com

And if so, why do people provide wmv files and feeds instead of divx,

Re: [videoblogging] Vloggercon? (was Re: Tuesday FlashMeeting)

2007-02-23 Thread Paul Knight
here's how I feel about vloggercon '07.

it should be more like a film festival, than the how to thingy that
last years was, there was too much time spent on the subjects of how
I do it, net neutrality, copyright etc. Sod That!! Yawn Boring! I
spent most of the Sunday session outside smoking and talking to
interesting people.

We should all get an invite like Irina did for the vloggies, no
matter where it will be held, and it should be a competition, but
more than that, if we could get hold a great big screen, loads of
people, not just us can see what we are capable of doing and raise
awareness that there is more than just TV shows, Films, Porn or
happyslapping videos on the visual side of the internet.

Vloggercon 07, should be Vloggercon 3: The power of the vlog or
something like that, and even if those who can't attend due to
distance or money problems should be at least be allowed to show.

This should be a celebration for all the hours of unpaid work, to
expose those who aren't as popular, as well as the cream de la creme.

In fact, how's about less attention be paid to the popular types, and
more emphasis on those that are trying.

I tell you one thing you could do which would help your cause a lot.
Provide a simple explanation on your site of why people posting
online video should use DivX. Specifically with regard to my
 concerns below:

I must be stupid, but I spent hours today - HOURS - trying to find
out what the hell DivX was, why I should use it, why I hadn't heard
of it being used by any videobloggers, who exactly *does* use it to
make it the world's most popular video compression technology.
Could I believe any of this? Did it matter?

And what form do DivX files come in? Some things talk about AVI,
Paul makes his in MOV. Everywhere says that DivX audio is in MP3
form. How is this packaged with the video: in one file? And isn't
 this a pain?

And most of all, IF I USED IT, WOULD PEOPLE BE ABLE TO WATCH MY
VIDEOS WITHOUT PERFORMING COMPLICATED TECHNICAL PROCEDURES TO UPGRADE
 THEIR PLAYERS?

Honestly, this information could not be more difficult to find. The
Wikipedia entry is impenetrable geekspeak, the DivX.com site is full
of hype and no answers to any of the questions above. I googled for
a long time, and tried to find Groups and Forums. I'm exhausted and
annoyed. I still don't really know the answers to any of them.

It comes down to this: I am happy with encoding my films in Quicktime
with the H264 codec, and theoretically in Windows Media if I can find
the time, and letting Blip make a flash player for my blog. Why
should I use DivX? Are there people out there who are big DivX fans
who are looking for DivX content and would subscribe to my feed so
that they can watch DivX films on their portable devices?

What? Why? Who? Where? When? HELP!

I don''t want to get into a commercial here, but just trow out some

DivX is based on the h.263 standard. The ipod can decode h.263, but
requires it to comply to the Apple standards. On the other hand, DivX
is integrated into a lot of devices as a feature on products
(phillips, Sony, Toshiba...) to the tune of over 70 million devices
shipped. I'm not sure how many video enabled ipods have shipped.

There are always elements we are working on to make the technology
better tailored for video blogging. It is a marathon, not a sprint.
That is why you see Ben and myself bopping around in forums and at
events. We want to do it right, and we that means ingesting as much
input as possible. Part of that is orchestrating web elements with a
coherent and powerful consumer electronics offering. We think part of
that CE offering should be that it is global and open.

On the computer side, that means we comply with standards that are
published and open as well as support as much on the OS side as we
can. We just released the open source encoding app for Mac. Our
browser plugin is tested on every browser on PC and Mac. To take it a
step further, our videos are decodable by numerous third party
applications like VLC (This means the video works in the Democracy
Player). On the flip side, we work with xvid so they can include DivX
profiles in their encoder. This allows xvid to be decoded in our
 decoders.

So there are a lot of improvements to work on, but when I look back
over the past few years, I think we are laying some good tracks.

Re: [videoblogging] call it a podcast or a vlog?

2007-02-19 Thread Paul Knight
Oh this old chestnut, not everyone likes to think their show is a
videoblog or vlog, some have dragged themselves from the audio and
make video podcasts instead, since portable media players such as
ipods and alike came out its made it possible for vlogs and video
podcasts and indeed vblogs (another term for vlog). When you sign up
for a feedburner account it asks you 'are you a podcaster' due to
podcaster coming from the audio side a few weeks before people
started using video. Some people prefer audio podcasting, as we are
pretend or Virtual TV stars, they are Virtual or pretend Radio Stars.

Evolution of Web 2.0..Blog...Photoblogaudio
podcastingvideo blogging, v-blog, video podcaster. what next?
(what ever happened to those virtual reality machines?)

there we go the history of words in a nutshell.

Hi Lovely Lovely Vloggers out there,

As some British people know or are aware of, Comic Relief is only a
month away, I have been to sainsburys and got my red nose and
holographic chocolate and this time, because I was a few months late
at starting this rollercoaster of a ride into internet video, I want
to do my bit for this wonderful charity. I have started doing a joke
a day on my website, http://pjkproductions.blogspot.com and have
managed to get a comic relief donate button so anyone, well just this
country actually can donate to to this worthy cause directly.

The cause is basically simple, instead of Rock Stars doing live aid,
you get the best comics from all over the world to do their bit for
free to raise funds for African Kids who have been effected by war
and famine to kids in this country who are carers for disabled
relitives the mentally ill, the kids who are effected by drink and
drugs, loads of things like that. I think it is possibly the best
Charity event of the year, it culminates in a big show on BBC TV on
March 16th this year.

Anyway what I am doing is posting a joke a day for the next 30 days
until Red Nose Day 2007, I have posted my first today and need a
little help with a few things.

2. If you would like to send me a joke to use I will credit you, also
if you want to tell a joke on video, even better.

3. If you like the idea of giving but you live in the rest of the

Many Thanks for any help you can give me.

Please, please, please, just read the e-mail, that's all you need to
do, please try to be completely un american about this and at least
give me some help on this, I don't ask for much, just that you read
the f'ing e-mail. All I want is support not money, I rally should be
typing this is capital letters, really.

JUST DIGG ME FOR f's SAKE, make this popular, not for me, BUT FOR THE
CHARITY, that's how thing usually WORK right?

And send me any jokes that you feel would make people belly laugh,
there is an incentive for you all.

But hey, I suppose all that motivates this group is money, or toys
(gadgets) or a discussion about being banned from youtube, big deal,
I just expected something more from the 1000's of people here, who
are selfish enough not to share their success with anyone less worthy.

The best way to proceed with this argument is to stop saying hey, I
never saw the e-mail and taking steps, personally if you want to, to
get these posts to greater media, posting diggs and technoriaties or
comments on vlogs etc. This is one of the reasons i got into
vlogging in the first place and to be ignored by the great and the
Good ha, is just not good enough.

I have seen it before in this clique, a community, ha!
So log as you can't hold a get together in NY, you are forgotten and
ignored.
This group IS made up of more people from outside the US than you think!
Stop being so f'ing selfish.

Paul Knight

(BTW anyone from outside the UK can't contribute to this Charity, but
I just need digging so that people know what I am doing to raise
cash, simple enough for you to understand, or shall I elucidate some
more)

Hey Paul, This is the first that I'm seeing the post. I didn't even
know that you were sick. Besides, you know how many posts flow through

appearing through no fault of the postee.

If you posted this Friday UK that is in the early morning California
 PST (i.e. 2-3am) I'm not reading, I'm sleeping! Literally!

Also I have to say that if I see something titled Charity Event that
generally means it is something to attend and since I am on
transportation lock down I might have ignored it even if I had seen it
 which I didn't cuz I was sleep.

Titles man, descriptive titles go a long way to drawing attention.
Let me read what you have proposed and we'll see if we can pass it
down the line and get some reactions.

P.S. If it ever comes up in Parliament I would like to propose that
the UK switch to Pacific Standard Time. I realize it would be a major
disruption but sacrifices have to be made to promote international
 unity. Or effective group communications.

Yeah, the finger is waving. In a Moe Howard kind of way but lovingly
 none the less.

  Hi All,

My London based documentary production company StoryLabTV is – as
 always -
looking for strong documentary film ideas with an emphasis on foreign
stories. Great access that helps tell the world's big stories - or
 unusual
angles to those stories - is what we are after.

Big examples: 'inside Hezbollah's TV station,' 'inside Nigerian
 militant
groups,' 'inside the Saudi Royal family,'

Unusual examples: 'a week on the Weekly Standard Alaska Cruise' as
 a way to
 talk about neo-con thinking.

Unfortunately the competition for the few TV slots that are
 available for
international films is enormous (almost 1000 production companies
 pitching
in London alone to the same 10 or so people) and only the best
 ideas with
the best access tend to get commissioned. Programs we pitch to
 include BBC
This World, PBS Wide Angle and Channel 4 Dispatches.

Along with access driven films we are also interested in big
 international
 investigative projects.

If your idea leads to a successful commission you will either be
 hired to
help make the film or receive a lump sum compensation (whichever you
 prefer).

 Hope everyone is well!

  (B) If it's not staged in some way, regular people always
have more off the wall questions than MSM people do.

  (C) The larger the group of interviewers, perhaps the
more willing some important people would be to be
interviewed, especially man of the people types.

However there is also big risk: You know how everyone
hates the White House Press Corps, because all they do
is pose easy, softball questions to Bush and pals. Everyone senses
it's staged. The risk would be that bloggers would do the same,

This is regarding grossly false accusations on my personal character

The feeling is much more intense for me than anyone else because its

I feel as though this forum is important for the support of

As you can see from one of 1000's of posts just like this, it also

If its not clear or you feel nothing has been settled, that's okay, I

Hi, Richard,

I downloaded this onto my mac, brilliant cross fades on the fluffs by
the way and on the whole the video was quite informative, so that's
why I get acid indigestion, ha! Anyway more to the point, I took the
file and did a 'movie to ipod' convert in quicktime pro, and it came
out with no loss of quality but i did come out about 0.9mb larger.
My method is save your original edit in a way that you can, then open
it up in quicktime pro and movie to ipod, now I don't know if the PC
version does it properly or not, but failing that, you can convert a
movie file in itunes so that it will play on an ipod.
One thing I do know is you need to keep the kbps down below 700, this
is on the ipod specification page at apple, a view of this might help
you also.

Re: [videoblogging] Vlogging in the Winter :(

2006-12-02 Thread Paul Knight
Before.
Read your instruction manual it will tell you about operating
temperatures. Could it be that your lens fogged up? We all know the
answer to that one.

After you bring it indoors.
I think Casey had the same trouble last year and my advice is the
same, if your machine gets cold then warm again quickly, you could
get condensation on your heads. This will make your tape stick to
your heads, and therefore loss of any recoding made because the tape
will be wrapped around your heads, and more seriously, the machine
will be Kaput, and in need of major attention. So when you have done
filming, remove tape before you bring it indoors, then leave the
camera for about 1 hour maybe 2 on the safe side to acclimatize.

In summary, it was probably not the acclimatizing to cold but the re-
acclimatizing back indoors.

Hope this helps.

1. Thanks for supporting me the other day, all of you who did about

actually visited the Local BBC centre here in Nottingham, I showed
them my stuff and have a radio interview booked for next Thursday, so
hopefully soon we might be hearing from other people from the East

2. I have finally done it, I have cracked it, an actual fist fight

Re: [videoblogging] Two Things.

2006-11-30 Thread Paul Knight
Thanks Schlomo, Gena and Steph,

I am actually shitting myself about this interview milarky, it is the
first time I have been interviewed by the media, so any help in that
field would be great.
It should be great the BBC now has access to my videos, and they are
thinking of putting some on their homepage.

My main worry is that people who use Internet Explorer cannot view my
vlog site properly. And I know that the majority of people who will
be listening to the program will be PC users, can someone who uses
Microsoft please visit my site and see if it is working on IE?
please? and let me know the outcome.

all it takes usually: walking up to someone and saying, I work hard

God man, Shit like this makes me want to pack it all in and live a

just makes me sick that those lazy arsed bastard journos at the BBC,
can't do any proper digging.

My stuff is great, the only thing I am missing it seems is an

their next page, I don't mind. just click on http://

with the launch of some new UK TV program about viral videos.
Meanwhile the BBC are going on about the future of TV a lot because
they consider themselves the guardians of it in the UK, and as their
funding comes from the license fee they are always a bit concious of
the need to keep talking about themselves and the future.

Heres the article about the viral vids:

The Star Wars Kid still wishes the video wasnt out there, the BBC and
others dont care, theyve been showing it on the TV today, all these
years later. At least the man behind '2nd most watched viral video'
Numa Numa, although upset when the thing first happened to him, has
come to terms with the attention.

Anyway I remain quite skeptical about the accuracy of such viewing

Re: [videoblogging] Video quality in Premiere Elements

2006-11-26 Thread Paul Knight
Yeah Nox, thats happened to me too, just lately using Final Cut Pro,
well quicktime pro compression anyway. And that's in PAL. Worst is
I had to get round it by saving it as a dv widescreen file, then I
bunged it into iMovie and then exported it as a letterboxed DV file
then from that I Movie to Ipod it. Things are getting a little bit
awkward just lately, it happened on both of my last two videos, it's
never happened before, I think it might be a bug in Quicktime or
itunes or something, hopefully someone will also notice and tell
apple to sort it out. Hopefully Apple are listening.

Paul Knight

PS possibly the reason I didn't notice it previously was because the
100% pjk was edited using iMovie. The last update for quicktime was a
few weeks back now.

 Elements to
 accept it.

I was able to change the default options for new projects to
 widescreen. No
problem, the new project opened with the little video placeholder
 frames in
the sceneline view set to 16:9 ration. But when I tried to add a
 clip in
widescreen format Premiere squished it into 4:3 and added black
 bars at the
 side. :(

I managed to get the clip widescreened (I can't seem to find the
 menu option
that I used, now that I'm looking for it). But the video quality is
terrible. I know I changed something to do with pixel ratio, and
 based on
the lousy output quality I have to believe that was the wrong way
 to do it.

So... anyone know how to get Premiere to believe me that my 16:9 clips
 really are widescreen?

 Many thanks,

Hi all,

Things are definitely looking up at the moment in the UK, what with
this and that, so now is your chance to join the ranks of the
UKvideobloogers group here on yahoo! http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/
group/UKVideobloggers/ We need more members and I look forward to
seeing you swell the ranks. This is not a break away group from the
videobloggers worldwide site, merely a chance to discuss the things
that are happening over this side of the pond, that most of the
members neither care or know about.
I know that Americans can be exciting, hell! I have been to America
twice this year, but the growth of interest in british home grown
video is just about to take off in a very very big way. So it is
time for discussion and debate.

Come on down and join the fun the British way, with Tea and Cakes and
Yorkshire Pudding, yes we have one of those.

television imposes more constraints, but the end results often had a
simialr sort of intensely personal, intimate, connection between
viewer and the person pouring out their soul to the lens. I do not
know how much any UK TV versions of such things could of influenced
people really, and I dont know whether there have been many
widel-watched TV equivalents in the USA over the years, so I dunno how
wrong I am, just rambling really.

I am thinking that this whole concept is a little behind over here,
so much so that it is only just recently that Youtube has been
mentioned on Mainstream TV and Radio and it seems any kid with a
mobile phone and computer can access myspace, there is also the time
element over here, it is still really uncool to spend a lot of time
in front of the internet rather than being in front of the TV. Also
video blogging over here, ie putting video onto a site, requires that
the person has a super inflated ego, something that is not so
British, we being the reserved sort. And you are right, over here
Reality TV rules, top shows include BIg Brother, I'm a Celebrity Get
Me Out Of Here, Wife Swap etc. So there must be some sort of
coalition between the two. However some news in, Channel 5 news is
now asking for Your News, a segment for the end of the evening news
where budding journo's with video cams or mobiles can shoot a piece
of video informing of some local news to them, these are exciting
times for us British, pity no one will read this or comment.

I'm going to volunteer to hold a Super Happy Vlog House. I'd
 like
other vloggers around the world to open up their homes to
  vloggers too
on this day, for collaboration, learning, and just plain
  getting some
  work done

 yup
  i'm down to do this
hopefully we can get hat factory as a venue.
  that's some people's house!
  and my office.

i think this is very cool.

My hope is that we can set up a wiki site, like
superhappyvloghouse.com or something like that, have the
 main page
list the houses that will be opened, and have the pages
  beneath those
links show agenda, guest list, and other information.

cool. pbwiki.com is free you just have to make the password
 public
and/or
 invite a bunch of people.
 it's easy.

Anyone *seriously* interested in helping me make this vlogging
  weekend
  a reality?

PS... I move the day before Thanksgiving... be expecting to
  see some
  serious vlogging after that...

Re: [videoblogging] Re: FCP render question

2006-05-16 Thread Paul Knight

Hi Richard,Yes, turning the Unlimited RT on is a good idea. There are other things I have found that helps speed up the rendering process:1. Make every clip(all those AVI or MOV or WMV) you import into a DV file, before hand using Quicktime.  If you are importing straight from a DV camcorder, the file is already in DV format and you get away with doing things to it before requiring a render.2. Make sure that  your save file is located on another Hard drive than the one your operating system is on, preferably connected via firewire.3. Render each bit as you go along, rather than waiting to render at the end.4. If you are green screening or using color correction these do take time, but avoid long peices of footage between cuts, in fact I have found if it is a long bit there is nothing wrong with chopping it into smaller pieces before you edit. Then copy over the setting onto the next segment.5. I have also found that due to the nature of this beast we call FCP, it is sometimes almost necessary in some instances of rendering to just get up from the computer and go and make a cup of coffee or tea, walk around the house, mow the lawn, walk the dog, go down the shops for a newspaper etc, and by the time you get back the thing will be finished rendering, it's just the way it is.6.  You can however if you click on your canvas box just above the playback controls and use your mouse wheel you can see what the thing will look like frame by frame if you wish.Hope this helped.PaulOn 16 May 2006, at 21:12, Zadi wrote: Hey Richard: On the upper left-hand side of your sequence timeline there is a little button with the letters "RT" and a downward facing carrot. Yes that's right, set up the scratch files, and then "save project as" destination External Hard Drive.  As for the choppy playback, probably got something to do with same thing.PaulOn 16 May 2006, at 22:19, Bill Streeter wrote: Yes Richard, You'll find that you get much better performance if you are working from an external firewire rather than your internal HD. Especially since you are working on a PowerBook that only has a 5400 RPM drive in it. And by this I mean going into your settings in FCP and setting your scratch disk to your firewire and saving and rendering all your work files to the firewire drive. This is recomended even if you are working on a desktop but really important if you are working on a PowerBook with a slow internal drive.
