Re: [videoblogging] Re: Four Eyed Monsters

2006-02-22 Thread Ted Tagami

I'm slightly "off on a tangent"...but here's an idea:

Arin and Susan, if you are reading this, come on out to Vloggercon in SF!

We can create something akin to a "flash mob".

If I am not mistaken, FEM is looking to get enough people to vote for a
zip code to show their film. Now just supposing we dynamically
registered a SF zip with each Vloggercon attendee?! We could have a
Thurs or Fri night showing of their film in a theater!

Wouldn't that be sumthin'

I'm not sure of the advantage of having the film online. Several
films have been released online, including the recent "Teach" (
http://www.teachnow.org/downloads.html ), and they don't seem to get
much interest. It does appear to make sense to release in theatres,
DVD and iTunes subscription.

Unless someone is wealthy and wants to experiment, a feature film
takes at least six months for scriptwriting, pre-production,
production, and post-production. And can often take over a year of
full commitment. Unless you also work as hard to make your money
back, you won't be able to make more films.

We need to find a way to get this film online so everyone can see it.
The video posts make more sense hand in hand with the film. The film
itself is very much in the vein of podcasts and exploration of
relationships through the inherent differences in means of communication.

Steve, you should get in touch with them. I think they are up in your
neck of the woods now ( at susan's parent's house). Maybe an interview
about what myspace film means and whether they see their podcasts as
primarily promotion for their offline product or if they see it in a
different light. They are really nice and well spoken, if a little
busy at times.

They made a full length film, 85 minutes long (

submitted it to top tier film festivals.

It's not clear if the episodes are fictional or factual. Perhaps I
missed something on the website and I haven't seen all the episodes
yet. But in episode two they talk about the film and her parents
investment.

They're trying to get distribution for the film. They're asking
people to to check mark "I want to see Four Eyed Monsters at a theater
in my area" which I assume they'll use to convince investors and
distributors to distribute the film.

Agreed, the series is not about blogging or videoblogging (it is
primarily video podcasting: http://foureyedmonsters.com/subscribe/ )

I think what really makes them interesting is that they are one of the
first (of many to follow) filmmakers to really take it their success
into their own hands. They are certainly pioneers.

So one of the content creators on our site said the hardest thing on
myspace on the web, on any medium where barriers to entry are below
sea level is rising above the noise. One of our content creators said
that directly.

I think now that literally everyone is equipped with the same tools it
will become a game of who can be heard the loudest among all of the
noise out there.

BTW can someone tell me how to create a signature?? Thanks :)

Whats also great about FEM is that it helps other non-bloggy filmmakers
"get it".  I showed that to some non-geek friends and they really
began to understand the concept of posting regularly, "staying
subscribed", being personal, and not always thinking about the product
in terms of how they can immediately make money.

Plus its so nice and indy touchy-feely.  Glad they were able to
profoundly affect your life and bring you closer to nirvana, Taylor.

That is true. With the potential distribution to billions of personal
theatres (individual iPods, mobile phones, computer screens, etc.) the
scarcity and control of large audience theatre locations is somewhat
disintermediated.

Aren't we all gifts from god?

Seriously though, their project is very interesting. We met them in
Park City and were really impressed with them from the discussions we
had. They really do get 'it'. (check out the interview here -
http://labs.divx.com/node/108)

They are pretty unique and very dedicated. They are using digital
media , like many people on this forum, in new ways to an uncertain
end. Also, like everyone here, they are very passionate (maybe not as
sensitive though ;) ).

I saw their film when they came through San Diego a few weeks ago.
Both the podcasts and the film (in my oppinion) are better with each
other. It is a good film and they have good video posts, but the
product combined is greater than the sum of the parts.

Combining different formats and presentations as a single product is
not a trivial step. Hopefully it will be financially viable for them
and we will see more projects come from them.

Remember, this is not a zero sum game. Just because someone is getting
something (newspaper stories, web traffic, free candy bars) doesn't
mean it is less candy bars for everyone else. The more news articles

subscribers, the better for verdi. The more people posting videos of
any format, the better for DivX.
