Make sure to get the one with the camcorder -- it's referred to as the Gmini 402cc or the Gmini 402s. It currently retails for around $300, after a recent price drop.

There are these Linksys, Dlink, et al adapters: with USB connection, you can have a WiFi connection.

I saw them at Office Depot, Fry's etc.

I'm sure one of the $50 units will give the Gmini 402 WiFi capability. It's how the TIVO box communicates to the Web. I know, because I just got one.

i've been pimp'n archos for like 2 years.way ahead of others. the hardware designs are good and they are solid.they could be a bit 'cooler' looking but it's all good.

I like the HP iPaq PDAs, they are nice. I understand HP is discontinuing the 4700, Dell is discontinuing their PDAs. That's a damn shame, because I use them a lot.

You can buy an accessory: camea which plugs into the SD slot (I have one for the 4700), presto! You have camera video capability for a HP PDA..which has WiFi BT wireless connectivity! Pretty powerful. It can play back videos audio.

It's unreal that the above *general* device has not caught on, that's why HP Dell are dropping them..not enough sales.

A dumbed down device (Archos, cellphones, et al) is the one that is succeeding..they have the mass-market sales numbers! Actually I get it:

I'm going after the bigger game..the Masses [ which required a dumbed-down device, like iPod ], not the elite class [ HP iPaq users ]

Basically, the Archos iPod are going after the mass-market with an easy-to-use device, dumbed-down for the mass-consumer.

That concept is key for my Market (auto-racing), where the fan can't waste time dealing with setting up WiFi BT network settings.. Even I find it user-unfriendly difficult!

There's a very active community of Gmini users, hackers, and developers; one site is: Gmini400.com:

and there's a project called ArchOpen, in which a group of hackers are developing an open operating system for Archos devices:

What OS does it use? I suppose, one could write an email app for it do a picture email over WiFi (using a BT - WiFi adapter).

Is anyone using the Archos AV500 (or that giant AV700) player. I want to get one to play with.

I just got a Sony PSP, want to transcode my .mp4 videos to PSP format.

I saw the Gemini at Fry's, it looks interesting. That AV500 looks really sexy, although bigger than the more compact Gemini.

Is anyone using the HP iPaq 3715? It has a builtin camera (which can do video)..that can *record* pics/video.

  Thank you Michael,

MediaCoder appears to be working brilliantly! Videora Converter didn't seem to have any settings for the Gmini, though I may still use Videora to search for video online. (I dig its integrated search engine.)
I can't believe how fast MediaCoder is transcoding; it's truly amazing! This is how it should be...Now I'm going to take my Gmini down to my local cafe and see how well the video turned out...
  Thanks,

Harold

Michael Sullivan or anyone who knows,
What do you find to be the best way to translate your video downloads to the format which the Archos players can play? I've got an Archos Gmini 402 camcorder/player, and though it includes VirtualDub software, the software isn't able to translate .mov files. So I've been opening my .mov downloads in QuickTime Pro, converting to .avi, and then using VirtualDub to convert to the type of .avi file the Gmini wants.
This isn't terribly difficult, but I'm thinking there must be an easier way -- a one-step process, rather than this two-step method. Anyone know? Thank you, Harold

I like the HP iPaq PDAs, they are nice.  I understand HP is discontinuing the 4700, Dell is discontinuing their PDAs.  That's a damn shame, because I use them a lot.You can buy an accessory: camea which plugs into the SD slot (I have one for the 4700), presto!  You have camera video capability for a HP PDA..which has WiFi BT wireless connectivity!  Pretty powerful.  It can play back videos audio. It's unreal that the above *general* device has not caught on, that's why HP Dell are dropping them..not enough sales.A dumbed down device (Archos, cellphones, et al) is the one that is succeeding..they have the mass-market sales numbers!  Actually I get it:"I'm going after the bigger game..the Masses [ which required a dumbed-down device, like iPod ], not the elite class [ HP iPaq users ]"-- Mark Twain"Make it idiot-proof"-- my photographer friend[ after asking him what he wants in a Photoshop plug-in ]Basically, the Archos iPod are going after the mass-market with an easy-to-use device, dumbed-down for the mass-consumer.That concept is key for my Market (auto-racing), where the fan can't waste time dealing with setting up WiFi BT network settings..  Even I find it user-unfriendly difficult!"We spend 80% of our development effort on UI [ User Iinterface ]"-- chief technology officer for RealViz[ conversation with him @NAB several yrs ago, I'm going to NAB next week.  Anyone else going?  I will be mobile-blogging in real-time as usual.  This is from last year:http://www.jumplive.com/main.html#NABThat "Dust to Glory" (offroad racing documentary) was everywhere, I even won a book @Adobe booth which discussed the video production of D2G. ]On 4/19/06, B Yen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Wow, I didn't know.I saw Gmini's at Fry's, so I guess you can get them there. http://www.archos.com/products/pc_centric/gmini_402_cam/features.html?country=globallang=enI noticed it doesn't have Wireless connectivity, like the PSP (WiFi).
