Plugging it into your computer isn't necessary. Turn on the phone and just
triple press home. Voiceover might be low so, you might have to turn up the
volume. You can do the setup from the phone.

Depends on your sim whether it will work in IPhone. Some you have to cut down.
(I just got a new one from O2. Suggest you check that.
Otherwise you should be good to go with tripple click home!

Triple click home should work.
When I upgraded to iOS 6 on my 4S I did a factory restore and VoiceOver
started up when I triple clicked home.
iPhone 5 should not be any different.
