It works on a 4s as well.
Hold the camera about arms length away from your face. It's finniky,
but you can get it.

I just use the camera thing that's built in and listen to it telling when
my face is in cdntre

a photo of yourself. Is anyone familiar with it. What is it called?

The one I use is Guided Photo Pro. It takes a good face shot and tells you
where to put the camera. I have found though, if you want more than your
face, you can listen to the phone and its own camera app will tell you where
it sees the face. Top center will usually do a centered bigger picture
