Face detection is not specific to the iPhone 5, it was introduced in iOS 5 over a year ago. One should also keep in mind that the front facing camera is of poor quality as far as digital cameras go, it's really meant for video calling and not so much for taking pictures. You can just as easily use the backfacing camera and use the volume up button to take the picture if it's awkward to tap the screen since it's facing away from you.
