A friend is traveling to Paris and Rome next month.
She is wondering about WiFi access in both places.
Apps for points of interest that would work for both areas.
Any tips folks might know that would be helpful to a first time traveler to
 Paris and Rome.
She is not on the list so I told her I'd see what I could find out since I
know there are folks from both countries on this list.
Thanks in advance for any help.

For a one-time command, you can press dots 1-4-5-6-space. This strikes me as
a bit less decisive, in case you forget and leave your rotor setting on close.

You would have to have the paid version to listen to complete albums with songs

I am considering adding one of these services to my iPhone 5. I already have
Pandora, and iTunes radio, but I understand Rhapsody and Spotify will let me
listen to whole albums, or a given artist for more than two songs. How do they
compare, both in ease of use, and in their content? I think they both have
free and paid versions, so what additional features would I get in the paid
versions? Thanks in advance for any opinions.

RE: Mysterious ringtone problem

2014-08-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Jenny,

Well, I guess there must indeed be something wrong with this ringtone. I can
import it into my Tones library just fine and it plays just fine, but when I
check it to sync it to my phone it doesn't seem to show up. If I look at On
this iPhone from inside iTunes and check my tones it also shows up there,
but it says copying in front of the name. It's almost like it's still
copying, but the iTunes sync finishes and it's just not working. Sorry I
can't be of more help, maybe try to redownload it. I'd rename your existing
file and after you download it again check the exact size and see if it's
the same as there is always a chance something got corrupted during the
download.

Good luck,
Sieghard

I have a friend who is blind and has a new 5C. At first siri worked when she
held down the phone button but now when she holds down the home button the
phone locks. I can’t find any setting that should make the phone lock by the
home button: unlock or at least the first step in unlocking, yes, but lock
via the home button? Not that I can find. I’m wondering if the home button
is broken or if there is a setting I don’t know about. I haven’t had her go
as far as holding down the home button and power button to reset yet. The
home button works normally when pressed; this abnormal behavior only occurs
when she holds it in to try to get siri.

I have never used Rhapsody, but I concur about Spotify. I have a
subscription and I absolutely love it! They indeed do have a large
number of tricks and lots of albums too. Having a subscription allows
you to listen to ad-free radio as well.

I am considering adding one of these services to my iPhone 5. I already
have Pandora, and iTunes radio, but I understand Rhapsody and Spotify will
let me listen to whole albums, or a given artist for more than two songs.
How do they compare, both in ease of use, and in their content? I think
they both have free and paid versions, so what additional features would I
get in the paid versions? Thanks in advance for any opinions.

Re: Question concerning NFL Audio Pass

2014-08-20 Thread Brian Fischler
Cheryl,

I didn't mention the name as I looked awhile back when this thread first
started and couldn't seem to find the app in the app store so I believe it may
have been removed but it still works, it is called Pro football radio, yes,
generic and a search will pull up a ton of apps, but not the one I have. My
wifi connection is fine but I still notice major delays when listening to games
on this app as well as on MLB At Bat. Additionally I am in NYC so not in the
middle of nowhere where wifi might be slow, not sure why I always have such a
delay and this has been the case on my 3GS, 4S, and now the 5S. Thanks for the
info.

There is a delay but there shouldn't be that much of a delay unless something
is slow in your area or with your network. Usually with MLB I get the
notification of the play at the same time it happens or not more than 30
seconds before. But maybe there are a lot of variables that determine this.

the feed and real time as it seems like it is a few minutes, and since I
receive several push notifications I have to turn off VO when listening to a
game or I get the push notification about a scoring play before it happens
to the audio feed I am listening to. Has anyone compared the NFL audio pass
feeds to the T.V. and is there a delay? I assume there is as MLB At Bat

audio has a delay. Was curious about this? Thanks,

Hi, this will only happen if you have the phone still set to lock after one
minute or two minutes where intervals are one of the first five iPhone. But to
answer the original question, if there needs to test the top the phone here
otherwise it will go on speakerphone. Or your friend could put headphones in
immediately after he takes it out and it will stay on the headphones. Hope this
helps.

Re: A question about how not to have your iPhone switch to speaker phone when you take it away from your ear

2014-08-20 Thread RobH.
I am intrigued by the solution for this, but not getting the descriptions
given.

Can one change a setting or do a single button action to achieve this?

I find it necessary to keep the phone quiet when getting on a bus and have
to take it away from face while dealing with the ticket/pass machine.
I've had cases where once in speaker mode, it wouldn't shut up at all and a
full bus heard everything.

Thanks, Rh.

Hi, this will only happen if you have the phone still set to lock after one
minute or two minutes where intervals are one of the first five iPhone. But
to answer the original question, if there needs to test the top the phone
here otherwise it will go on speakerphone. Or your friend could put
headphones in immediately after he takes it out and it will stay on the
headphones. Hope this helps.

2014-08-20 Thread Joseph Hudson
Hi Rob, that's why I recommend the OtterBox commuter series I do not have this
problem at all. I'm able to touch the top of the phone and it's able to stay
off the speaker for a brief amount of time. Yeah I was there to make a button
to but unfortunately they don't have one. There is one, but I don't know how
well it works when you hit it. You pretty much have to hide the keypad in
Waterford to work.

2014-08-20 Thread Joseph Hudson
Hi Christina, I did not think that was the case. Pretty much what they're
saying is if you lock the screen I guess while the phone is in headset mode it
won't go to speakerphone I will have to try this and see. I also think that
also hangs up a call if you don't have a headset plugged name because I know
I'm able to do it while using in the my Bluetooth headset war my Apple EarPods.

Re: Rhapsody Or Spotify, Opinions?

2014-08-20 Thread Christina C.
I am not sure. I never use the online version of Slacker. The last time I tried
Slacker Radio on my mac it was not accessible. It's probably flash based. I
believe Slacker's policy is that you can only download to one device due to
licensing agreements. However, I do not personally have need to download to my
computer since it's always connected to our home WIFI. I do appreciate the
option on my iPhone though, since sometimes I cannot get a good signal. :)

Radio you can create a station based on an artist like in Pandora. My
husband felt that Slacker did a better job of this. Plus in Slacker you can
customize your artist created stations with sliders of different options.
For example, Lets say, you create a station based on Maroon 5. Under the
related artist tab you can fine tune the slider from zero percent to 100%.
If you choose zero percent, then that station will only play Maroon 5 songs.
If you choose all the way to 100% then Slacker will play many more artists
 similar to Maroon 5. :)

Slacker has 3 subscription options. from free all the way to $9.99 a month.
The premium version allows for songs and albums on demand. You can also make
playlists and download them to your iPhone. You can also download albums to
your iPhone as well for offline listening.

RE: A question about how not to have your iPhone switch to speaker phone when you take it away from your ear

You can triple tap the home button to turn off voice over. That will do the
trick as well.

Hi Christina, I did not think that was the case. Pretty much what they're
saying is if you lock the screen I guess while the phone is in headset mode
it won't go to speakerphone I will have to try this and see. I also think
that also hangs up a call if you don't have a headset plugged name because I
know I'm able to do it while using in the my Bluetooth headset war my Apple
EarPods.

Re: A question about how not to have your iPhone switch to speaker phone when you take it away from your ear

2014-08-20 Thread Alan Paganelli
One other way around this would be to use a Bluetooth ear peace that would
route all audio through the ear peace. The Plantronics Bluetooth Legend is
what I use because it's hands free and my iPhone 5s can stay in my pocket.
The ear peace when a call comes in will announce the callers name assuming
during setup you authorized permission for the legend to access your
contacts, will say the callers name followed by the 2 choices you have.
Answer or Ignore? Just say answer and the ear peace replies with answering
call and puts the caller through. No fooling around or annoying switching
back and fourth. And if you need to have the phone in your hand, with the
screen curtain turned on, not only can't people see the screen, they can't
hear the audio either.

Alan

I'm sure you're using dictation and Siry is making a right pigs ear of it. I
think this is maybe what is confusing a few of us.

In short, there's no real command to disable the feature?

Every other device I had, made you click a button as a positive assertion
you wanted that feature. I hate digital assumptions, and more so when they
rule supreme and don't give you a choice in the matter.

Hi Rob, that's why I recommend the OtterBox commuter series I do not have
this problem at all. I'm able to touch the top of the phone and it's able to
stay off the speaker for a brief amount of time. Yeah I was there to make a
button to but unfortunately they don't have one. There is one, but I don't
know how well it works when you hit it. You pretty much have to hide the
keypad in Waterford to work.

There is one way of getting it to work. Note this might be difficult for
those with small hands. I just tested it. While in a call and you need to
pull the phone way, slide your thumb over the ear piece as you are pulling
the phone away and it will keep it from changing to speaker phone.

this method will work. Note that you must switch off voiceover before
putting the phone to your ear. Note that it will not work by only doing a

EarPods.

to answer the original question, if there needs to test the top the phone

There is a delay but there shouldn't be that much of a delay unless
something is slow in your area or with your network. Usually with MLB I get
the notification of the play at the same time it happens or not more than 30
seconds before. But maybe there are a lot of variables that determine this.

available. What happened before is still happening...can only seem to
locate the home broadcast, not the away one. When I click on source, there
doesn't seem to be the away choice...and I've moved everywhere on the
screen. SMH! Sorry for the whining...

 Ann,

I don't have a straightforward way to get there. I have the same

However, once you are playing the broadcast, if you move around the
 screen,
there should be a source button. I think it says, source: home. You
 can
double tap that and choose away. Hope this helps.

 Hi listers,

When using NFL Audio Pass on an IOS device, is there an easy way to get to
it and the broadcast you are wanting to listen to? Sometimes I find it
 with
no trouble, and then there are other times... ... ...

And do you have to listen to the home team broadcast, or is there a way to
choose what you want to listen to? I'm a little tired of it kicking my

We decided she should return it. She hadn't known how to get out of anything
when she first got it and so she did turn it off and on frequently when she
first got it but still, I've never seen a phone lock when the home button was
held in. She'll get a new one with no problem.

phone locks.

Interesting, I just tried it, and for sure it ended the call, and the phone
ended up locked; I suppose the latter is a statement of the obvious. So
you have to do all the unlock thing again to get back to the phone app. So
now we know why we still use the 2finger double tap and/or feel for the End
button in the bottom left corner.

We're getting there, just need to work out a consistent way of stopping
speaker mode without verbal or tactile gymnastix.

Re: A question about how not to have your iPhone switch to speaker phone when you take it away from your ear

2014-08-20 Thread RobH.
We just tried this, it kills the call.

Getting confused now.

How do we get out of speaker mode? apart from putting it back to your ear,
which doesn't always work. That's when it got embarrassing on the bus.

when you are on a call, and you have the phone against your ear. Lock the
phone, by quickly pressing the power button, on the top of your phone.

A Question for iPod Nanno 7th Generation Owners

2014-08-20 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I am now the proud owner of a 7th generation Nanno.

Question:

What does the General Settings option called Time on Wake, do?

Toggling this setting does not appear to make any difference anywhere or in
any way, so far as I can tell.

All replies welcomed.

How do you get voice over to read the keypad buttons when you have the phone to your ear when making a call

2014-08-20 Thread Jen Colley
Hi,
I have an iPhone 5c and use voice over.
I have had an issue recently when I needed to make a call. I dialed the number
and then put the phone to my ear.
I then had to enter an extension but didn’t want the phone going in to speaker
mode.
I attempted to search for the numbers but voice over said nothing.
My question is, how do you get voice over to read the keypad buttons when the
phone is close to your ear either to enter numbers, end a call etc?

Re: How do you get voice over to read the keypad buttons when you have the phone to your ear when making a call

2014-08-20 Thread Cheryl Homiak
First of all, if the phone is up to your ear and the speaker has not been
engaged, you don't need to hear what's on the screen to end the call; you can
just press the power button.
Secondly, if you really must not engage the speaker by pulling the phone away
from your ear and you have to enter extensions, etc., the best thing would be
to use some type of earphone or headphones. I use a single bluetooth earpiece
but there is plenty of variety to explore depending on your needs.
Thirdly, you should be aware that at times when you are in call, the screen may
show buttons for mute, keypad, etc. and you may have to double tap the keypad
button to bring the keypad back up. You really don't want to be doing this
while trying to maintain the phone to your ear anyway and again, an earphone
szstem would be the best way to handle this.

Finally, while I don't have time to check the information and outline this now,
it is possible to edit phone numbers and put in commas to allow for an
apropriate pause after the number connects and then dial the extension if this
is a phone number where you always have to enter the same extension number;
this will also work with keypresses other than extension numbers. Googling
and/or looking through the archives should get this information for you.

RE: Rhapsody Or Spotify, Opinions?

2014-08-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Christine,

According to some review I read, Spotify has more songs. Here is an excerpt
from one review which was done on May 23 last year and others seem to agree
with these numbers:

At the current time Spotify advertises having over 20 millions songs while
Rhapsody has over 16 million. This is more music than you will ever listen to
and both libraries are continually growing. It’s likely that you’ll find songs
missing from both, but both products allow you to add your own music to the
library.

I don’t know how available Rhapsody is in Europe, but Spotify is big there and
they are now just starting to offer service in Canada as well. Due to our
copyright laws here music services here have been pretty limited, neither
Rhapsody nor Pandora are available here and so far neither is iTunes Radio. As
I said, Spotify is now just starting up. We did have Rdio and Slacker before
and also Beezar but those are less popular.

Regards,

Sieghard

RE: A Question for iPod Nanno 7th Generation Owners

2014-08-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Mark,

If you set Time on Wake to On, the iPod Nano (sixth and seventh generation)
is supposed to display the clock after you wake it up rather than to show
the music player with what was last playing.

Take care,

Hello Everyone,

I am now the proud owner of a 7th generation Nanno.

Question:

What does the General Settings option called Time on Wake, do?

Toggling this setting does not appear to make any difference anywhere or in
any way, so far as I can tell.

All replies welcomed.

Re: How do you get voice over to read the keypad buttons when you have the phone to your ear when making a call

2014-08-20 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I have some little motorola hx550 single bluetooth earphones that have several
options for how you have them on or in your ear. This doesn't work for everyone
but I can comfortably hang one on an ear without having a bud in my ear or
anything and it can be quickly opened and positioned and taken off my ear and
closed. So I don't consider it inconvenient. These are old earphones so I'm not
necessarily thinking people would flock to get them but they work so well for
me that I just keep using them. They can be paired and connected to two phones
at a time but I find this doesn't work quite as well for me. My point isn't
about my particular choice of earphone; I'm sure there are plenty of solutions
like that out there that don't isolate you from or muffle your environment
significantly while using them and aren't bulky or time-consuming to connect
and disconnect.

I tried and tried to turn over a new leaf.
I got crumpled wads of tear-stained paper thrown in the trash!
Then God gave me a new heart and life:
His joy for my despairing tears!
 And now, every day:
This I call to mind, and therefore I have hope:
 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
 his mercies never come to an end;
 they are new every morning;
 great is your faithfulness.

I attempted to search for the numbers but voice over said nothing.
My question is, how do you get voice over to read the keypad buttons

Could I humbly and politely ask that some people consider shortening their signatures

2014-08-20 Thread Neal Ewers
I know, I am not the moderator. Not even close. And I know I could skip the
long signatures. But I really can't if I want to read the string of messages
as they are connected to each other. It just takes more time to wade through
many lines of text I don't need to hear. For those of us who get hundreds of
messages per day, spending time reading through each long signature is
simply slowing down the number of messages I can respond to.

Remember, I am asking politely, and not because of anything the signature
says. So consider this just a request from a very busy person.

RE: ringtone problem fixed

2014-08-20 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Sieghard,

I'm not Tom but what I was going to do for her, yet Tom beat me to it, was
to simply import the ringtone into a sound editor such as Garage Band or, in
my case, Gold Wave. Then, simply resave the file as an AAC / ringtone file.

I'm guessing that is what he did.

I am looking forward to his reply.
