Sorry, I tried not to jump to any conclusions, and I even tried to
indicate that in my message. I couldn't figure how to take that
message in any other way though, but as a knock on blind people.

I realize that you have to consider a person's native language and
state of mind when reading their messages, but I also think someone
posting a message bears some responsibility in how they come across. I
also don't think that sarcasm excuses a demeaning statement.

I was obviously the only person who interpretted this message in a
negative connotation though, so I'll chalk it up to my own over
sensitivity, and ask the moderators and the members of the list to
forgive me and the poor way I composed my message.

Either way, I don't see any of this. I've only see people trying to

apps with similar names, but that's obviously not the fault of this app.
IMHO, if there's a problem with the usability of this app it's that
there wasn't more documentation or a tutorial or a podcast on how to use
it, but the author said he wanted to get it out there to see if it would
be useful or not before putting more development into it. I think we
just need to use it, understand how early it is in the development
process and give the author feedback on how it could be improved and be
easier to use, which I think is exactly what's happening

Re: typing on the phone

2012-05-29 Thread Rob Harris
Yes, you get good at it and with practice, it is quicker and more reliable
than groping all over the virtual keyboard on the screen. Good in noisy
environments when you can't hear the feedback of what you're touching on
screen. It's not quite a real keyboard, but it offers that kind of
assurance of you know what you're doing without having to be prompted or
confirmed every step of the way. That's the real benefit. I think the 3
modes you switch on the rotor would be a great advance on all edit fields to
be honest, but that's asking too much. But, and I do do this, do the
writing in TIB, copy to clipboard as a basic option, then go to the real app
and paste straight into the field.
It has basics already like sms, email, twitter and facebook; and just use
the clipboard feature after that.

I started off a bit cynical, but some of the greatest advocates started
there too.

Hi guys,
thank you for your appreciation.
We are working to fix the rotor issue, maybe using different buttons as
Rob said.

Kimber, i don't think that TypeInBraille could be considered as a
labor-intensive
way of
inputting text. After few days of practice you can easily type much faster
than using the traditional keyboard or any other app.
On our website there is an audio/video that shows how fast, a blind user,
can type the same text using both the traditional keyboard and the
TypeInBraille keyboard. The blind user was asked to type: Ok, see you at
5 -- 18 sec with TypeInBraille (after 3 weeks of training), 42 sec with
the traditional keyboard (after 3 months of training). It's just a matter
of practice.

Ok, it's not in there, and I also note that the bak button, though in the

So it's only the rotor that bugs me or my device a bit, and I'm sure that

Hi Sarah,

Sorry, haven't time to give detailed instructions now ... but I think you'll
catch on if I start you off:

1)Double Tap each verse you want to include;
2Locate a rather small button on the bottom right edge which says
Action.

From there you follow your nose and it's necessary to swipe all the way to

the left to get a feel of what you can do there ...

Any more questions when you've played a little, do come back and I'll do my

  Hi guys,
  thank you for your appreciation.
We are working to fix the rotor issue, maybe using different buttons as
  Rob said.

Kimber, i don't think that TypeInBraille could be considered as a
  labor-intensive
  way of
inputting text. After few days of practice you can easily type much
 faster
than using the traditional keyboard or any other app.
On our website there is an audio/video that shows how fast, a blind user,
can type the same text using both the traditional keyboard and the
TypeInBraille keyboard. The blind user was asked to type: Ok, see you
 at
5 -- 18 sec with TypeInBraille (after 3 weeks of training), 42 sec with
the traditional keyboard (after 3 months of training). It's just a matter
  of practice.

Ok, it's not in there, and I also note that the bak button, though in

directly and swiping back to the top... gets irritating, but just
remembered the 4 finger thing to go directly to the top or bottom, so
 we

So it's only the rotor that bugs me or my device a bit, and I'm sure

2012-05-29 Thread Peter Lane
Hello Ed and Fellow Listers,
I want to thank you all for your patience and suggestions to get me started on
FB via the use of Voicebook. I feel comfortable now but see that Voicebook is
very limited in terms of the full Facebook experience. I am hoping the
Voicebook developers can expand their app to broaden its scope very soon. In
the meantime, I think I'll move onto Facely HD. The regular Facebook app is
just too confusing to me. I suspect that much of my problem is that I'm just
not familiar with the various FB terms, such as Messages, Status,
Notifications, etc Is there a Podcast that you might recommend to help me
better understand which is which?

Hey Peter, I was on the beta team for VoiceBook, and it is a very straight

easily. To get you started when you get logged-in for the first time,
VoiceBook will take alittle while to load, but as soon as it does it will
read the first status out, then to go to a new status you will want to flick
one finger down, if this doesn't work make sure that your focus is reading
the status. If you want to comment or like that status double tap on the
status and it will open a menu and there are several options here the options
are pretty easy to figure out. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Well, I have mine in landscape, I use both thumbs and slide left thunb down
the message list, use the right thumb to do a split tap on one of them, then
use the right thumb alone in the middle of the right pane where the body of
the current message is and read it like that until I've had enough, then
revert to left thumb down the message list again and so on.
The top-left corner hold the bak button if you want to go to look at other

There is one that will help you memorize the code, but it can't test you on

Braille Reference, $0.99 has the American braille code plus computer

You should sign up for Hadley if you don't have a local option for learning

Subject: TextFree seems to be a good app

I just thought I'd share my experience so far with TextFree here. I had
used it a few years ago and let it expire, but I had reason to go back to it
yesterday actually because of texting a lot with someone on an IPod touch
that doesn't have and doesn't seem to want to upgrade to IOS 5.x with
IMessage in it. So this app is nicely accessible and has the added benefits
of being able to make and receive calls and voicemail now. One nice benefit
is you can get what if you want it to can be a completely free additional
local phone number. You could pick another area code too if you wanted. That
can give a number to put in things or give out where you would prefer not to
give your actual cell number and if things go for any reason how you don't
want them to with that number, just let it expire. That's just a thought and
there are other ways to do that as well though. The HD quality calling is
quite nice too. The texting is always free and the calling gives you like 20
minutes a month outgoing and all incoming free. To buy a hundred minutes
more is $1.99. To get rid of the ads for a year is $5.00. What it didn't
have before when I used it a few years ago was the way to buy more minutes.
Definitely useful to have the app.

Hi, forgive me if I've misspelled the name of this app. It would appear

reading by paragraph is smoother with VoiceOver using those file formats.

Re: Ipad Gestures

2012-05-29 Thread Garth Humphreys
Hi

You may want to enable containers in the rotor, I am not sure if it will help
much but if you want to use gestures to move around the screen then this will
at least expand your options. I can't remember if it is enabled by default.
Whilst in your mail, use the rotor gesture and see if containers is an option.
If it is then great, experiment with it. If not, go into your accessibility
settings and into VO then go to the rotor settings and add containers. Oh by
the way, containers lets you jump between the major sections of the screen with
a single finger swipe down/up.
Personally though I use a similar method as already described by the others.
With the iPad, it is really worth some time in exploring exactly where on the
screen each thing is and then just touch the screen there to move focus.

I will sometimes swipe between the move, delete and reply buttons in the mail
app but otherwise I prefer to look for what I want by dragging.

Hope this helps.

Garth.

Hanging with Friends

2012-05-29 Thread Charlene Young
Hello,
I have the free version of Hanging with Friends, but I also have the paid
version now and would like to use the paid version instead. Is there a way to
log out of the free one so that i can use the paid one? I tried to put my user
name into the paid one but it tells me that this user name is already in use.

Thanks in advance,
Charlene

hey Kim I think this gentleman is suggesting that maybe after tapping send
that at that time it may ask for the email address.

Let me suggest an experiment: on the basis it might, or even ought to
know

or be able to find your default email address, put a suitable subject line
in that field and see if the ap sends the text correctly anyway. Don't
try

it with a lengthy or important missive.

Hi All,

I recently downloaded a text editing app called Draftpad. One of the
functions is the ability to email what you've written to yourself. The
problem is when I choose the email option and enter my email address,
the text ends up in the subject line of the email rather than in the
body.

I can't figure out what I'm missing. Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Kimber

The app I think you are talking about is not accessible.
The only marginally accessible app that will allow you to edit Word
documents is Pages.
It is only marginally accessible in my experience. Not worth the $9.99
unless you can use it with vision.

Hi, forgive me if I've misspelled the name of this app. It would appear
you
can edit Word documents. Is that true? I'm looking for something that can
synchronize with Dropbox, and while I've found several editors for text
format, I want to find something that will work with Doc and DocX since
reading by paragraph is smoother with VoiceOver using those file formats.
Thanks for any recommendations you can pass along.--Joe
