Re: Voice book

2013-06-14 Thread Mária Orovčíková

Amy,
to get Voicebook working, try to do the following:
1. Go to:
m.facebook.com
2. Click on settings and privacy link.
3. Click on apps link.
4. You will find all authorized apps with Facebook. So click on
voicebook link and find remove.

5. After that open Voicebook and reauthorize it again.
Some people say it is good to remove Voicebook app from the phone and
instal it again.
For me just removing Voicebook from authorized facebook apps did the
trick, so I did not have to reinstal Voicebook.

Hope that helps.

Re: Using Siri or Dragon to transpose radio speech into text/braille?

2013-06-14 Thread Sandratomkins
Hi Aman,

The In Touch programme also has a transcription service, so, if
preferred, one can read the text of the various interviews. This feature of
accessibility is due to human transcribers and so is not something that is
provided for many of Radio 4's programmes.

Perhaps, contacting the developers of Dragon and or Apple with Siri, might
result in a specific app which will allow for longer chunks of speech to be
recorded. I know that what is needed is something that transcribes on the fly,
but even if we could start y practising with longer extracts, advances might be
made toward that end.

This reminds me of the early days of scanning and Kurtzweil, when, often,
the results were less than faithful, but with time and development, scanning
results have improved exponentially, this might also be true of Speech to text.
It seems obvious to me, given Siri's ability to understand, under optimal
conditions, a person's voice, nearly in real time, that all this is possible
and is only a question of computing power and speed.I feel about this the way I
felt about Prizmo some years ago, that is is doable and that, while we may have
to accept bad results for a while, we can work on this and improve it, if only
development is pushed in that direction. If, for example, an app could be
developed to work along with Siri, or the dictation function on the keyboard,
and which could be allowed to hog as much CpU power as is necessary, I wonder
if we could see improvements in results?

I know that I am an innocent abroad with regard to all things technical,
but it seems obvious to me that this is potentially a doable thing with our
iPhones.

One other thought: the ability to transcribe from speech to text could be
most useful in the mainstream for meetings and, dare I say it, surveylence,
maybe, as with other voice applications, we can be the Guinee-pigs! Things
always move on faster when mainstream motivated IMHO.

things repeated or can't ask. It would even be a step forward if I could get
human speech into a state fit to be spoken by Jaws, I find computerized
voices a good deal less of a problem.
Anyhow, though I have no wish to go off topic, I have tried this
with Dragon, ViaVoice, and several microphones without any success. The text
is either illegible or nearly so. The audio is fairly good, if I give it to
a human being he can understand it, so it's not an audio problem, it's a
recognition issue. Though Nuance has stated that training is not really
required for current versions of Dragon, it certainly helps. Background
noises of any sort only make things worse, and there is always some sort of
background noise. I would be most interested if anyone has tried this sort
of thing with Siri. I have not tried it for several reasons, including the
inability to easily use a decent wireless microphone with Siri, the fact
that Siri is limited in the amount of time it will allow one to dictate
without stopping, and the fact that it requires internet connectivity. If
anyone has managed to overcome these issues with Siri, or if anyone has
gotten an untrained program to recognize a normal speaker over long periods,
whether remotely or locally, I would appreciate hearing of it. I will have a
look at In Touch this week, Sandy, with thanks for letting us know about it.

Subject: Using Siri or Dragon to transpose radio speech into text/braille?

 Hi everyone,

I was just listening to a programme on radio 4 UK, called In touch.
This is a weekly prog dedicated to the interests of the VIP community. This
time it was looking at the potential of using voice recognition to provide
Deaf Blind people with a transcript of radio programmes. I should mention,
for those who don't know it, Radio 4 is primarily a speech based service as
apposed to music based. There is a scheme afoot, in the States, using
centralised computing power to begin this service for some radio stations
there. Now, this got me thinking, couldn't Siri/Dragon do this for us
directly on our phones? Has anyone come across an app that already does
this, or am i in the vanguard here?

Personally, I don't, at this moment, need such a service, but I think,
this might be useful to some of our members, especially, if, instead of
waiting for national efforts, we could do it for ourselves. I do see so many
apps appearing, seemingly, after the horse has bolted,

Re: Using Siri or Dragon to transpose radio speech into text/braille?

2013-06-14 Thread Sandratomkins
Hi Aman and Scott,

Reading and rereading your posts, it seems to me that it would be useful to
break down the problem into some variables. For example, in the long term, one
would want to be able to have one's phone listen to, say, a conversation, and
digitise it in real time. At the moment, this can't, apparently, be done. So,
given that voice recognition works, to some extent, with Siri and Dragon, which
aspects are problematical?

1. For now, perhaps, we should concentrate only on monologs. Thus,
obviating the need for voice printing. Something that also seems to me to be
eminently possible, but lets not muddy the waters at this early juncture.

2. The learning process of the voice recognition: while this is improving, as
we all know, from using Siri, it does get better with use, so, for now,
experimenting with, say, a regular radio presenter, might be the way to go? In
this way, we can optimise the sound quality, no background noises etc.

Rather like the free-hand scanning with Prizmo, it was necessary to
seperate out the variables which were causing the difficulties for us as users,
we need to establish which are the interfering variables and deal with them in
isolation and only once some answers have been dealt with, can we put them
together and come up with a sort of StandScan software version of a usable
Speech to Text application.

So, the first thing we need is the ability to present Siri or Dragon with,
lets say, 10 minutes of speech, recorded from the radio and start things from
there.

Hope people don't mind, I am just pondering, because it looks so very
possible to me, and just think, regardless of hearing and vision, how useful to
students etc such software would be?

Hi, as far as I know, because of the sandboxed nature of iOS, you can't
use any call blocking apps with much success unless you jailbreak. This
is of course different if you have a Google voice number and give that
out to the world. 832-554-7285 is mine by the way. This means that if
people start calling or texting me and I no longer want them to, I can
block them from the Google interface itself, regardless of which carrier
 I use.

The following information is from memory so it is suspect … LOL.

If you open Navigon and double tap on the more tab which is located in the
lower right-hand corner, you will be taken to a list that includes map manager.
If you are using an older version, you will be prompted to upgrade. that ends
the memory portion of the show … LOL

If you have the newer version after double tapping more you should see a
variety of extras that you can purchase. be warned, in order to get the latest
and most accurate maps there is a subscription cost … take heed. it is only
$19.95 for two years and the maps are updated quarterly.

Re: Using Siri or Dragon to transpose radio speech into text/braille?

2013-06-14 Thread Carol Pearson
I was interested to learn the In Touch programme has a transcription
service.

If anyone can give me details to pass on to a deaf-blind person, this
would be helpful.

Carol P

On 14/06/2013 10:38, Sandratomkins wrote:

Hi Aman,

The In Touch programme also has a transcription service, so, if
preferred, one can read the text of the various interviews. This feature of accessibility
is due to human transcribers and so is not something that is provided for many of Radio
4's programmes.

Hi, Sandy and all.
This is rather an interesting idea, and it's one I've tried with
several products myself. My own hearing is so problematic that I am strongly
tempted to braille over speech, particularly when I don't have time to have
things repeated or can't ask.

Personally, I don't, at this moment, need such a service, but I think,
this might be useful

Hi all. Now that the Apple WWDC has happened, it's a good time to remind
everyone about the importance of writing relevant messages to the list
in order to help cut down on list traffic.

What I mean when I say relevant messages, I'm talking about only writing
messages which help to contribute to the list. In other words, if
someone asks a question about a recently discussed topic, you should
read all the messages of that topic first to see if someone already
answered it. Chances are they did and so your own message would not be
necessary. If I ask for example what the gesture to answer the phone is,
I might get an answer that a 2-finger double-tap is the way to do it and
someone else might say to touch the answer button, and then double tap
the screen to activate it. These are both correct and that is the only
two messages which should be written. However if 1400 people read that
message and all have the answer it would greatly increase the list
traffic. Also, if there are things which you read on this list and you
are grateful that someone answered your question, and you have to
absolutely thank the person because your grandmother told you to always
use your manners, then please send that person a private email to thank
them. The rest of us don't need to know. Especially when all the public
thank you messages just add to the list traffic. Lastly, let's all make
this list the most enjoyable viphone list for iOS and iThingy
discussions. If we all do our part, we can reach that goal easily.

Strange problem with my iPhone 4, can you help?

2013-06-14 Thread Chris H

Hello everyone, this is Chris here.
I have a strange problem with my iPhone 4 running iOS 6.1.3.
Please can I have your help?
Recently, whenever I use the rotor in an active text field, say in a
text message, VoiceOver crashes. I know this because I get silence for a
few seconds, followed by, VoiceOver On. I also hear the announcement
that the screen curtain is on.
I tried a quick reset with the press of the sleep/wake button five or
six times. Now, this did resolve it, but now it is back.
I can't say what really triggers this, however just now I used Easypush
for the Pc to send some text to my iPhone ready to create a new text
message.

Any responses will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: amazon bluetooth keyboard hidden

2013-06-14 Thread Lisa belville

Hi. Are you talking about the Amazon Basics Bluetooth Keyboard?

If so, I have this keyboard and that button is actually the second from the
right on my keyboard. But, hopefully this will help.

That button is called the eject button, but on the Amazon Basics Keyboard,
it toggles making the on screen keyboard visible or not.

Has he pressed that button again just to see if it says keyboard visible? I
tried it with mine and it didn't say anything until I went into a text
editing field and tried the toggle again a few times and all was working
normally; I could use arrow and other keys on the Amazon Keyboard whether or
not the on screen keyboard is visible.

how do i find older texts

2013-06-14 Thread bj colt
Hi List,

I had some older texts, perhaps from 3 weeks agago from a friend. I can't
seem to find them no matter where I look. Do texts get deleted without my
permission? Where do I find these older texts that I have not deleted?

I thought I was able to retreive previous texts by clicking on the person's
name in my phone book. Then clicking on send message and older messages were
there.

I've tried a 3 finger swipe, up, down, left and right but no page change,
nothing.

I need to get to some information in an older text quite urgently. I've
tried for hours and hours but getting nowhere.

Any guidance would be very much appreciated.

Re: how do i find older texts

2013-06-14 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

Open the Messages app. if there's a Back button in the upper left corner of the
screen, double-tap it. You'll find an Edit button in the upper left corner of
the screen, and a search field below that. Since you're looking for specific
information, you could double-tap the search field and type in a keyword to
find.

If you want to look at messages instead, you'll see that below the search field
are listed all the people with whom you have exchanged messages. double-tap the
name of the one you want, and all messages between you and them are listed with
the oldest first.

The Plantronics Vocalist Product

2013-06-14 Thread EricSS
I recently purchased the Plantronics M55 Bluetooth earpiece. I mentioned them
that it comes with one free year of their vocalist service. Someone mentioned
at that time they did not feel this service was very good. I whole heartedly
agree with that and second my agreement!

First, accessing the service is an issue. It is not reliably making contact.
Second, the speech recognition seems to lag and not be very precise, either.
Finally, the voice it uses is horrible! This is an instant review, so I may not
be totally fair and some of this may improve with my learning curve, but I'm

Re: Strange problem with my iPhone 4, can you help?

2013-06-14 Thread Arianna
Have you tried restarting the iPhone? I've never had this issue. Also, have you
updated to the latest iOS 6 version yet? That might help. I remember someone on
this list saying that pressing the sleep button on the iPhone multiple times
wasn't really a good thing. They said, if I remember correctly, that all this
does is crash the Springboard, which I think is the technical name for your
home screen. Anyhow, that's what I've heard jailbreakers call the home screen.

Thanks,
Ari

seconds, followed by, VoiceOver On. I also hear the announcement that the
 screen curtain is on.
I tried a quick reset with the press of the sleep/wake button five or six
times. Now, this did resolve it, but now it is back.
I can't say what really triggers this, however just now I used Easypush for
the Pc to send some text to my iPhone ready to create a new text message.
Any responses will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Advice on updating iPad 2 OS from 4.3 to 6.1.3

2013-06-14 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Hi,

I'm trying to help my young daughter update her iPad 2, never previously backed
up or updated.

We've got the iPad backed up, purchases transferred, and synched.

With the iPad 2 connected to the PC, we click on Download and Update. When we
do that we get a message that says you may lose all information on the device.
This is scary.

I've tried the wireless route, but there's nothing in setting for a software
update, so I'm guessing the older version doesn't have the wireless update
option.

Can we go ahead with the download and update from the PC, even though we get
the scary message? I guess we can just restore from our backup earlier today if
we run into problems, but I'd feel better getting advice from here first.

Thanks. Keith

2013-06-14 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
Hi,

Unfortunately, as you've discovered, the wireless updating or ota
updating as it's known was only introduced in iOs5. I think you should
be ok; just double check that everything that you need is on your pc
and then go ahead with the update. I know how you feel though; I don't
really use iTunes enough to fully understand all of its little quirks
and I feel like I'm playing rulet with my data every time I plug one
of my devices in.

Cheers,
Ben.

Just do it.
You need IOS 5.0 or later for wireless backup.

RE: All access update.

2013-06-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Bob,

Paul already answered your question, but I thought I add a few tips which
will make it easier for you to find information without having to wait for
an answer on the list. As you probably noticed the Viphone list has a very
high volume of messages and if every new member asked over and over again
what a certain app is or does especially if it has been discussed before,
that volume would go up even more. Please don't think I am trying to
discourage you to not ask questions, but as I said, here are a few tips
which help you in getting the information faster and often with more
details:

First, if an app is mentioned and Jennifer included the entire name All
Access Talking Menus it is relatiovely easy to type that into the search
field of the App Store app or, and I find this often even easier, just
google it. If you add on iTunes to your google search, just about every
time your first search result is the link to the app you are looking for on
the app store and then you can easily read the app description, see what's
new and what the cost is. For example: All Access Talking menus on iTunes
will bring up the app store link as the first search result.

Another way to look up information is to follow the link at the bottom of
each post to the list archives. Here you have a single search field and if
you type in an app name or, for example, bluetooth keyboards you are
likely to find lots of posts which you can review.

Lastly, the website www.applevis.com is a great resource. There are many app
reviews, podcasts and How-To tutorials and just as you can do a google
search for an app name followed by on iTunes, you can also add on
Applevis and you most likely find links which point you straight to the
relevant article on applevis.com.

Welcome and have fun with your iPhone or whatever iDevice you may have.

Regards,
Sieghard

RE: Advice on updating iPad 2 OS from 4.3 to 6.1.3

2013-06-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Keith,

Keep in mind that a backup only backs up settings, home screen layout and so
on. Any content on the iPad like music, movies, pictures etc. have to be
synced, but you did mention that you did all of that.

Only other thing I would do possibly is to do an encrypted backup with
iTunes, it's an option when the iPad is connected and it does backup a bit
more than a regular backup such as passwords for Wifi and |I think email
accounts if any are configured on the iPad.

Good luck,

Sieghard

RE: a question about focusing and thermostats and washers and stoves.

2013-06-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I think it also helps a lot to ask a sighted person to take a look and
explain to you where exactly the temperature is displayed.
Furthermore, on some thermostats the screen goes to sleep and you have to
push a button to wake it up, then the temperature may be displayed for a
while before it goes off again. Knowing all of this really helps in
understanding how to best take a picture.

Sieghard

Subject: a question about focusing and thermostats and washers and stoves.

Hello, someone said that they used some apps to help them find the
temperature settings on their washer, stove, and I think thermostats. Can
you tell me how you focus the camera to do that? I have a Honeywell
thermostat that is old, and I am trying to get the temperature to tell me
what it is set up. at and it is very very hard, any tips or tricks would be
appreciated.
