The obvious answer to the question about two fingers scrub or back button on bluetooth keyboard is the escape key. Intriguingly, yet interestingly, I am trying a new bluetoooth keyboard on which escape key works as shortcut for home. So, If I were to use escape key while in the email app, it will take me to home screen. Vey sturdy keyboard and keys are well spaced out. I will check if his keyboard has already been reviewed or I am planning to do it myself. Coming back to my problem, what key combination can I use to achieve two finger scrub? Hi, Thanks so much for all this information. It was most helpful. I did have to go and turn off hidden file types as I'm using windows 7, and thought I had the problem solved after that. RE: A Very Specific Question About iPhone Backup Files
Mark, I'm running iTunes for Windows 11.4.0.18 and often make an encrypted backup of my iPhone 6 running iOS 8.3 as I also did with my previous iPhone 5. I had 8 backup files listed in the Devices dialog under Edit, Preferences all of which begin with Alan's iPhone. Some of the backups listed also included the date next to Alan's iPhone but about half of them only said Alan's iPhone. If I lingered over the specific backup, ZoomText would announce the date it was made even though no date text was included in the list. I then researched where iTunes places encrypted backup files on the computer and found it is in a folder which includes the name MobileSync\Backup. The actual subfolder name is much longer and depends on the version of Windows you're running as to its location. Here's a link to the Apple Support article in case you're interested: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204215 This folder had a series of 8 subfolders under it which I assume correspond to the 8 backups I previously mentioned. The files under these subfolders included a string of alphanumeric characters in their names but had no file extensions. I'm telling you this in case you want to poke around with Windows Explorer. Good luck and I hope this helps. Alan Lemly -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of M. Re: extra plug adapter
Lori, everybody today needs to recharge something that requires a USB port. In almost all new homes being built today, usb charging ports are included right in all wall outlets. There are one to two electrical outlets and several USB charging ports. Walmart stores, bestbuy stores and just about everybody else carry charging devices. These new outlets plug right in to a standard wall outlet. They provide maybe 1 electrical outlet and 3 or 4 USB ports for charging your devices. They actually aren't all that expensive either. They run around ten dollars. With everybody needing more and more charging ports the demand will only grow. The little cube thing you got with your iPhone only has 1 USB port. Check out Walmart, Target, etc. You should have no problem finding a salution to your USB shortage. RE: A Very Specific Question About iPhone Backup Files
Hello Alan, Thank you so much for this information; the website is great. Based on your reply, I would wager that you have not given your device a new name other than that which was set by default. I make a practice of renaming each of my iOS devices immediately upon purchase. If one does not do this, then, in theory, all of the devices would have the same name. This could be an advantage or a disadvantage, depending upon one's needs. My point is that, assuming that you have not renamed your latest device, if you are encrypting your backups, only one file is being updated/created. The remaining backups would be from your non-encrypted backup sessions. If you have not done so, rename your latest device to something like Alan's iPhone 6 or something that is easily distinguishable from your other devices. Then make an encrypted backup once or twice and see how many entries are created and let us know. Thanks again for your help on this. Mark -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Alan Lemly Sent: Monday, July 20, 2015 7:14 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: A Very Specific Question About iPhone Backup Files Mark, I'm running iTunes for Windows 11.4.0.18 and often make an encrypted backup of my iPhone 6 running iOS 8.3 as I also did with my previous iPhone 5. Now keep in mind that I am using iTunes 11 for Windows on a Windows 7 PC but I will appreciate replies from Mac users, as well as PC users running the latest version of iTunes. I noticed that for both my 5 S and my 6 Plus, there is only one backup listed in the table of backups while there are multiple backup entries for my iPhone 4, 4 S, and even my old 3GS. The multiple entries for these older devices are delineated by their dates. I have not attached these older devices to my PC in over two years. The only explanation I can come up with, on my own that is, is that only the 5 S and the 6 Plus are using encrypted backups. Can that be the reason for each device's singular backup entry? I expected to see multiple backup entries, delineated by date, for both my 5 S and 6 Plus but there are none. There is only one entry for each device. So, I would ask you to let me know what you have listed in your iTunes backup table for your series 5 or series 6 device. To see your list of backups,do the following: 1. Open iTunes on your computer. 2. From the Edit menu, select Preferences. 3. Select the Device Tab. Here you will see a list of device backups. Thank you in advance for any feedback on this. Re: iPhone 6plus and otterbox
hello bob, i had no problem with otterbox, for my 4, and 5s,but, now i have the 6plus, and otterbox defender case does not fit tight enouhg in my case the middle i really have to press very hard for the iphone to respond. there were several people that suggested to cut the plastic face covering off, and put some kind of covering on the glass of the iphone, another option was to order a battery case and gorilla glass or something else to cover. so i found a battery case 4800 mAh case for about 20 bucks, and it uses the lightning cable to charge, but then i have no way to carry it, i found a pouch with belt clip, but its for a 6plus not in any kind of case lol. i have enough friends with 6plus or 6 to give or sell the pouch and battery case, cause i like the otterbox belt clip to carry iphone . on a side note, i am really liking amazon prime 30 day free trial i may even pay he annual $99 because all the little items i have mentioned above i received in 2 day and no sales tax or shipping very cool so good hunting on the boys with toys internet and thanx for all the help from the group the curmudgeon On Jul 20, 2015, at 12:59 AM, 'RobH.' via VIPhone viphone@googlegroups.com wrote: Tell me more about this solution, it sounds like one I'd like, and hope to go up to the 6+ soon, and will be taking that route iin cases. Re: Ring tone question
Hi Wendy, Are you using a PC or Mac with iTunes? I had some problems on the Mac side using 12.1. I would interact with the scroll area, select the playlist tones and stop interacting with it. The problem came in when I went to the top, found the LTE section and wanted to sync all the ringtones at once. When I went back to the phone I found that I was always missing one of them. I never could figure out why. For some reason, it is what it is and maybe when I finally decide to upgrade to iTunes 12.2.1, it will be fixed. Eileen Sent from my iPhone On Jul 18, 2015, at 11:39 PM, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote: Hi Wendy, You can add your ringtone to iTunes as a song, then find it in your list of songs, right click on it and select the Create AAC version option. This will convert it to an M4A file which is the iTunes music format. You then have to rename this file so it has an extension of m4r, then copy it back into your automatically add to iTunes folder and next time you open iTunes it should be correctly moved into your Tones folder and added to your Tones library. You then still have to connect your phone and sync it over. Alternatively, and if you are just doing one or a few tones I find this even easier, you can use a number of free online converters out there. One I tried and find very simple to use is at the following URL: http://audio.online-convert.com/convert-to-m4a Once you are on that site just use the button quick nav key to find the browse button. This will open a regular windows dialogue, find your file wherever it is saved and select Open. Now use b again to jump to the convert button, wait a bit and check the notification bar to see if you are prompted to open or save the file. Select save and the converted file will be downloaded to your Downloads folder.. Keep in mind that it's only converted to M4A so you will still have to rename the extension to m4r before you can Copy it into the automatically add to iTunes folder, open iTunes to automatically move it to the tones folder and add it to your tones library. Now sync the tones to your phone. If you use Windows 7 chances are the setting to Hide extensions for known file types is turned on in which case you have to go to Tools and Folder Options, then Control+Tab to the View Page, tab twice into the treeview of options and press pagedown once, then down arrow once. This should take you onto that option, if it is turned on you can turn it off by pressing the spacebar. Now tab to Ok and activate it. The m4a extension will now be part of the file name and visible, you can now press F2 to rename it, all you have to do really is change the a at the end to an r. They run around ten dollars. With everybody needing more and more charging ports the demand will only grow. The little cube thing you got with your iPhone only has 1 USB port. Re: Fleksy Version 6 and My Comments
Thanks for this update on Fleksy. I've downloaded the Fleksy keyboard and have been using it this weekend for writing in texts and things. When going from the regular keyboard to Emogy and then to Fleksy, I double tap the Switch to Keyboard button in the lower left corner. RE: A Very Specific Question About iPhone Backup Files
Mark, Point taken. I guess my counterpoint is that I only expect to ever own one iPhone that is in use at any point in time so any of those backups I made for the older device will be unnecessary once it's replaced and I've backed up the new device. Therefore, I don't have to worry with backups of my older devices which will get overwritten I assume when my new device of the same name gets backed up. Less stuff for me to keep up with and at my age, that's a real bonus. If I change my mind and rename my device, I'll post back with my backup results. If they are more than 1 or 1.5 GB different, maybe allow up to 2 GB of difference, you may need to backup the phone with iTunes on the computer, and I would recommend an encrypted backup so you get all your passwords etc. Then select restore in iTunes. This will erase the phone, reinstall the firmware, then you can restore from that computer backup. Then see if the iCloud will now work. RE: Fleksy Version 6 and My Comments
Wayne, It sounds as if your Fleksy Keyboard might be in the mini layout mode. This is the mode most similar to the original Fleksy app and it has no spacebar or other keys such as the alternative keyboard button. If you are in this mini layout mode, you can switch to the mode that does have the spacebar with the switch keyboard button just to the left of the spacebar by swiping up with two fingers on the Fleksy keyboard. You can switch back to the mini layout mode by swiping down with two fingers on the Fleksy keyboard. I'm enjoying the Fleksy keyboard and am finally finding I can be productive with it after the handful of inaccessible versions. The one issue I'm still having with it is that it is sometimes inconsistent with announcing through VoiceOver what I typed following my swipe right. VoiceOver will say a word other than anything close to what I wanted and when I swipe left to delete it, VoiceOver will announce the word that I wanted as being deleted. So, apparently the correct word is there, VoiceOver is announcing an incorrect word, and when I delete what I believe to be the incorrect word, I discover the correct word was there all along. This is inconsistent but pretty frustrating when it happens. The other fairly consistent issue is VoiceOver not announcing typed contractions correctly with Fleksy Keyboard. I've learned a bit of a workaround. If I type a contraction such as I'll and Fleksy via VO announces just the letter l when I swipe right, I've learned that the correct contraction has actually been recognized by the Fleksy keyboard. It's almost as if the apostrophe in the contraction is confusing what the keyboard sends to VoiceOver. I've written the Fleksy Support guys about this but have yet to hear back. I hope you continue to enjoy the keyboard and I'll post back if I learn anything new about issues or workarounds. Calendars
Calendar questions: I have created different calendars within the calendar app like work, appointments, birthdays, etc. I am wanting to do a couple of things. 1, Be able to list all events for a particular calendar, like birthdays, for the current month. So at the first of the month, I could just take a quick glance at the birthdays coming up for that month. 2, Be able to list all events within a particular calendar, like appointments or work. Have all the events within a particular calendar be in a list so I could quickly look to see what is coming ahead, and this could go further than the current month. I have looked at the native calendar app, plus others like VO Calendar and Month Cal, but have not found that this can be done in any of them. To me, if you are able to create different calendars to help organize events, shouldn't there be a way of grouping events by the different calendar categories. Re: Calendars
Yes, I do know that I can go into calendars and choose the one I want. But lets say that its July 1st and I want to see what birthdays are coming up in July. I was looking for a way of just listing the birthdays for July without having to go through each day of the month. I am talking about something like a filter. I do not think this is possible, but I think it would be a really good feature. Re: extra plug adapter
Hi all, I went today to Radio Shack and bought their plug adapter that plugs into a standard wall outlet that has two USB ports so that I can charge several of my bluetooth devices like my bluetooth headset or my bluetooth speaker or even my mophia juice battery pack all at the same time. This 2 port adapter only cost 21 with tax. They didn't have the 4 port adapter so I got the 2 port adapter and this will work for me for what I have . RE: I purchased a used iPhone 5S from Gazelle
Sounds like they make a lot of money since I believe they are paying around $150 to buy a used 5S, probably less for a 16 Gb model. For $399 you could have bought one of the new iPod Touch with the A8 processor and used it for testing the iOS 9 beta. Just my thoughts. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Vicky Collins Sent: Sunday, July 19, 2015 8:56 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: I purchased a used iPhone 5S from Gazelle Yes, I know, grin, this is of course not the best time to be buying a phone. But, well, seeing as I wanted to test iOS 9 without risking my iPhone 6, and then I thought I might give the phone to a family member once I was done testing, I decided to go ahead and make the purchase from Gazelle. I got a used 5S 16GB ATT model the site claimed to be in excellent condition for $413.99, which included two day air shipping. The Gazelle site was easy enough to use, as I mostly opted to use it with my computer running Windows 7. However, I never could seem to create an account after adding something to my cart as their FAQ claimed. But, rather, I had to finally create the account first, then add the iPhone to my cart and then go through the checkout process. Also, I never could get my debit card to go through, getting some error message about fraud. but, then when I switched to paying via PayPal, even with using the checking account the previously attempted debit card was tied to, the purchase went through without a problem. I could have chosen various shipping methods, but I opted for the two day, as I wanted to be sure the phone would arrive while I was off on vacation. Although, since I'm in Indianapolis, and the package shipped from Louisville, I'm almost thinking I may have delayed it getting to me, as it spent a whole day in Louisville doing nothing before it was shipped to me on that second day. I also opted for their excellent condition model phone for $399 plus shipping, as opposed to the one they termed in good condition for $329 plus shipping. The box seemed to be packed well enough, as I had to pretty much tear up the box to get to the phone. The phone was in a zip lock bag, and that bag was sandwiched between two pieces of foam. The package also contained the lightning cable, the wall adapter and a thank you card for buying from Gazelle. I had no trouble at all getting VoiceOver to start and in setting up the phone. It came with iOS 8.3, but I updated to iOS 8.4, and then to the 9.0 beta. Although, grin, with this first public beta, I very quickly decided to get my education in entering recovery mode and restoring back to 8.4. And, 8.4 works great on the 5S, by the way, can't tell much difference than on my 6. Surprisingly, I was able to use the ATT site and request that the 5S be unlocked, and I got back within just a couple of minutes the congratulations message that the phone could be unlocked. Thus, I followed the instructions in the email and did the backup and restore with iTunes and indeed got the congratulations message on my PC that my phone had been unlocked. But, not surprisingly, grin, when I went to the Apple support site and checked the warranty status, of course I was told there was no active phone support or warranty for the device as those had expired. The ATT site had a captcha, for which I used FireFox, but the Apple site did not have one. By the way, the Apple site for checking if find my iPhone is turned off on a device does have a captcha, but the audioit finally offered me was reasonably clear. All in all, although I was kind of surprised to learn I could buy used phones from Gazelle, as I thought they just purchased used phones, I am so far very pleased with my purchase, as well as with the timely shipment notification and shipping of the product. -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. RE: extra plug adapter
Hi Fazil, I agree with Allen regarding Anker products. They seem to be well-made and get very high ratings on Amazon across their product range of external batteries, cables or travel and car chargers. I also have their 2-port model which is plugged in behind the bed so my wife and I can have our iPhones plugged in at the same time and it works as it should. Since you are in Canada, below are direct links for Amazon.ca for their Dual-port and 4-port travel chargers and also for the 5-port family/desktop charger. The first two are just plugs without any cables which plug directly into an outlet just like the Apple USB wall plug. The 5-port desktop charger has a cable so it can sit on a desk or table where it's accessible and you plug it in to the wall outlet nearby with the cable. Since the Amazon links were quite long and would have most likely wrapped over multiple lines which sometimes makes them not work, I used the Google URL shortener to avoid this: Anker 20W Dual-Port USB Wall Charger/Travel Power Adapter with PowerIQ™ Technology http://goo.gl/PTjSF1 Anker 36W 4-Port USB Wall Charger/Travel Power Adapter with PowerIQ™ Technology http://goo.gl/8g83yN Anker 40W 5-Port Family-Sized Desktop USB Wall Charger with PowerIQ™ Technology http://goo.gl/QUgLHK Regards, Sieghard -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list.
