Re: An iPhone Functioning as a CCTV?

2015-12-02 Thread Traci
Here's the link to zoom reader.
ZoomReader by Ai Squared
https://appsto.re/us/4-URy.i

It doesn't say how much it magnifies, and it hasn't been updated since 2012.

Here is another app that claims it magnifies up to 30 X. That's a big-time
magnification. I'm going to try it out on my iPad mini. Here is the link.
Magnifying reader for restaurant bill and menu (30x zoom) by Lilit Yeritsyan
https://appsto.re/us/lMhX2.i

Having an iDevice function as a portable CCTV would be great. I haven’t been
successful in finding an app that will magnify enough for me or flip the text
to negative mode.

Good luck with this, you would think it would be very doable. :)

Re: Apple, Don't Take my Headphone Jack Away

2015-12-02 Thread englishrider91
Rose, are you comfortable using in-ear headphones? I have a $20 or so in-ear
Sony headset with a mic that sounds decent.
Product name:
SONY DR-EX12IP In-Ear Stereo Headphones with Mic and Remote (Black)
Amazon link:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004QOA93E/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8=1

If you would rather view the page opens in Safari, flick right twice ffom the
address fiepd, and you'll get to something called view in the Amazon app.
Double-tap that, and the Amazon app will open with that product up.

Thanks,
Ari

Re: To back up iPhone using windows iTunes

2015-12-02 Thread Harry Bell
I had this problem with trying to back up my iPhone 5s to iTunes on Mac mini.
After an hour on the phone to Apple, the solution was to delete the previous
backup because it must have been corrupted and was preventing a new backup
going through. After deleting that backup, I was able to get Itunes to make a
new backup with no problems. Just in case that tip might be useful. Harry

RE: Downcast major problem!

2015-12-02 Thread Cristóbal
The dev tweeted out last night that there were some issues with playback on iOS
versions 8.x and advises that if you can, upgrade to iOS 9.x. If you can't,
then I guess you may just have to wait until an fix is put out.

Subject: Downcast major problem!

Hello,
I downloaded the update to Downcast yesterday, and now nothing will play.
Not old episodes that I was saving, and not new episodes that I just
downloaded.
I have tried taking downcast out of the app switcher and restarting my
phone, but nothing has helped.

Since I download my podcast to my device, I really do not want to delete the
app because I do not want to lose all of the episodes that I am saving.
Does anyone have any suggestions, or know of a way that I can delete and
reinstall the app without losing all of the episodes I have currently saved.

I did send an email to the developer explaining the problem that has
occurred, but have not heard anything back.

Thanks,

Chris

Looktel Money Reader problem

2015-12-02 Thread Marie
I have used the Looktel money reader for a long time and absolutely love it.
However in the last month there has been a problem with it. On my 6th gen
ITouch running IOS 9.1 it will not even open when I double tap or in the rare
instance when it does open, it will not read anything. I have tried deleting
and re-installing, re-booting the IPod and no change.
On my IPhone 6 running IOS 8.4 it has worked normally until yesterday when it
opened but would not read the bills? I actually picked up my old IPhone 4
running IOS 7 and it worked flawlessly. Is anyone else having any issues with
the app or am I being haunted by the Apple Gotcha?

Re: An iPhone Functioning as a CCTV?

2015-12-02 Thread Wayne Merritt
At one time there was an app called Zoom Reader from AI Squared. I'm
not sure if this is what you are looking for. It was released a ffew
years ago and at that time cost $20. Though it does have some
self-voicing reading functions, its main purpose I believe was to
magnify text like a CCTV.

Hello,
I downloaded the update to Downcast yesterday, and now nothing will play.

Thanks,

Chris

Question about TV Guide app

Hello,

I have a question about the TV guide app. When flicking through the app in the
sports section, there is an add that says it covers the page. I can look at
parts day, but I have difficulty getting past the add. Even when flicking
through headings, I can't get through the whole day. Is there a way to navigate
past the ad that I am not aware of? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Overcast questions

2015-12-02 Thread Greg Wocher

Hello,
Once you have a podcast running there is a button that says Effects.
When you activate this button a popup comes up giveing you the speed
options. The first one is called smart speed make sure this is on. In
this popup there is also a setting for playback speed you can adjust.
Hope this helps.

Looking at Overcast, and have some questions for those who are using it.
First, I am running ios 8.4, so I can not run the latest version since I am not
running ios 9.

First question, how do I get the podcast to download? I have 4 episodes and
they say waiting to download. I went to the download tab, but still could not
get them to download.

Next question, I thought I have heard that you could speed up how fast you
listen to the podcast. If this is possible, where is that setting? I did not
see it in the settings.

As I continue to get to know the app, I am sure that I will have more questions.
Thanks for any help!

Well its a long time they are out, so maybe there should be an update...
And now the new 20 euro is out too, so if the app developers will not
update the app, we will end with a program that does not read 2 of the
most important banknotes.

Rose, are you comfortable using in-ear headphones? I have a $20 or so in-ear
Sony headset with a mic that sounds decent.

Product name:

SONY DR-EX12IP In-Ear Stereo Headphones with Mic and Remote (Black)

Amazon link:

If you would rather view the page opens in Safari, flick right twice ffom the
address fiepd, and you'll get to something called view in the Amazon app.
Double-tap that, and the Amazon app will open with that product up.

Thanks,

There's an unconfirmed rumour from a source that has in the past been credible,
that the next generation iPhone will not include a headphone jack, so Apple can
make the phone thinner.

I'm pasting a blog post that I wrote and published on this subject 72 hours
ago. Here goes.

I like thin, lightweight technology, but it isn’t the only criterion that
determines what I use. If thin and light doesn’t give me the performance I
need, I’m happy to choose something heavier or bigger.

When the iPhone 6 Plus came out, I bought one. Initially, it seemed absolutely
enormous, and I thought I’d never get used to it. Now I’m on the 6s Plus and
would never go back to a smaller iPhone. The battery life and the bigger screen
for Braille screen input make it the right choice for me.

After being a MacBook Air user for three years, I recently bought a 15-inch
MacBook Pro with all the specs maxed out. It includes 16GB of RAM and 1TB solid
state storage.

Compared to my MacBook Air, the Pro feels heavy and thick, and I’ve therefore
given it the nickname “The Big Kahuna”. But it fits in my backpack just fine
when I travel, it isn’t really that arduous to take places, and the thing is,
it goes like a rocket. I enjoy having OS X for a few apps and functions, but
Windows is still my primary operating system. With a laptop this fast and
powerful, I can run JAWS in a virtual machine with superb results, and still
tend to iMessages and FaceTime calls.

Sometimes I pick up my old MacBook Air and think, “oy, what have I done? This
thing is so cute!” But the performance factor soon reminds me that I made the
right decision for my particular needs.

There’s plenty of choice of form factor in the MacBook line now. If you want to
go ultra-portable, there’s the new 12-inch retina MacBook, which is just
adorably thin and light, with compromises to match. It sports a single USB type
C port, which is the only way both to connect peripherals to it and charge it.
And the keyboard is, to put it charitably, an acquired taste.

So when it comes to Mac, Apple now has a

Chrome and it's excess ability on the Mac and iOS

2015-12-02 Thread Mary Otten
I recently saw that there is an update for chrome for iOS. I don't know about
the Mac side. But I am sending this to both lists because I am interested in
the current state of the excess ability of this browser on both platforms. I am
not interested in learning chromevox, as I think it is stupid to have to learn
a whole new convoluted set of keystrokes just to use one program. And in my
long history of using computers, I have gone through enough learning and
unlearning of keystrokes, that I feel I have earned the right to have excess
ability without having to learn yet another set of them, which will not be
applicable to the whole system. So, what kind of excess ability can I have on
the Mac with chrome using Yosemite and voiceover? How about on iOS running iOS
9?

Re: upgrading from 4s

2015-12-02 Thread Victor Gouveia

Hi Chris,

I apologize for my lack of clarity. Perhaps I should have said mobile
computing becomes obsolete in six months of it's release?

I agree that desktop computers are virtually at a stand still, as well as
pushing processors to their limits with over-clocking and the like, but
having said that, I don't think that the mobile technology market has
changed in the last 15 to 20 years in terms of it's advancement, or should I
say, the speed in which the technology changes has remained at the same pace
for a while now, and the same goes with Laptops and touch screen devices
being moved into the mainstream.

In any case, I can't explain why, then, that my 4S is so slow to do
anything.

When I compare it to my 6S, it's practically a dog's age before I can get
anything to happen on it.

I think it started with iOS 8.0, but don't quote me on that.

I've checked the background apps that are running, minimized any extraneous
processes, and the difference is negligible. I do have to say that the
battery life has greatly improved with iOS 9 since it introduced "Low Power
Mode", but again, that doesn't help me in my quest to accomplish tasks
faster. Smiles.

The pace of advancement in computers has slowed down. It isn't true that
a computer is obsolete in six months any more. That being said, the
reason advancements in computers has slowed down is because the effort
has moved to mobile devices. So what you say is still true for mobile
devices.

It's also a fallacy that newer operating systems mean older devices will
run slower. This is true when new features are added and enough
attention isn't paid to performance, but IOS 9 is a good example where
this doesn't need to be the case. IOS 9 has breathed life into older
devices such as the iPhone 4S. I've been using an iPhone 4S since it
came out, and I never found that things took forever, but it did get a
boost in performance when IOS 9 was released. That doesn't mean it isn't
going to suffer when compared to a newer phone.

On 30/11/15 15:52, Victor Gouveia wrote:

It's the same as buying a computer.

Remember that technology becomes obsolete within six months of it's
release, so, if you think of it in terms of a computer, it would be the
same as buying a two year-old computer, versus a computer that's only
one year-old.

The younger computer has newer technology, and can therefore handle the
demands of the computer more easily than the older two year-old system.

You might also have to think that the more advanced operating system
will have greater demands put on the device.

So, when I first got my iPhone 4S, it was running iOS 6.0, and was
running much better than my older iPhone 3GS, but as more and more iOS
updates came along, the slower and more lagging my devices became to the
point that doing anything on my iPhone 4S takes forever.

When I use my new iPhone 6S, the speed can't even compare to the older
3GS, or the 4S.

Good luck in what ever you choose to do.

I wouldn't say significantly better, but that depends on how you define
significantly. It will be supported longer, it does have better specs so
it will perform a bit better, it has a larger screen and a longer
battery life. I'd suggest checking out the specs and reviews on line.
From an accessibility stand point, it's a wash, so you're making the
same decision any iPhone user would, blind or sighted.

iPhone seven rumors

2015-12-02 Thread nicholasacosta775

Sent from my iPhone hello, as you all may know you might have heard of some
rumors claiming that the next iPhone will not have a headphone jack. So, this
might not be a good thing for Apple to do this. But, reports are also saying
that they might use the lightning connector that you use to charge the iPhone
to use it as a headphone jack. But, that means that in order for somebody's
headphones to fit into that Jack, they will need to support a lightning
connector for the headphones. I don't know what the companies will think about
this change if it happens. Remember, if this rumor is true, please email Apple
and tell them not to do this. Also, people might think that if there wasn't a
headphone jack, we might still be able to use Bluetooth. But, this might not be
what somebody else lights. Having a headphone jack is better. What will also
happen to any Bluetooth speakers that people own? These speakers might have a
headphone jack connected to them and might require that you plug it into the
headphone jack in order to use. I hope that Apple does not make this move
because it might not do any good for them. The iPhone sales might go down. We
would not want that to happen just because Apple made this change. Please
remember, the iPhone 7 is still in the making and these are just rumors. As
long as we tell Apple what we want, who knows, they might listen to us. But, we
can't just keep quiet. We need to try.

Thank you.

On the Plus, are you sure that your rodar is set to Actions? Even if
it is not, I'm pretty sure you can double tap the Edit button in the

2015-12-02 Thread Traci
Hi, I read about an app today called can I stream it. As far as I understand,
you are supposed to be able to look up TV shows, movies etc. and see where you
can stream them. Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, etc.

Well, the app is not accessible, it is full of unlabeled buttons. I really
like the concept however, does anyone know of an alternative app that will do
the same thing?

Thank you,
Traci

In iTunes On The PC, activating Apps in the More Button Tree View

2015-12-02 Thread Arnold Schmidt
I want to update the apps in iTunes on my pc. Apps is listed in a tree view
that jaws 16 calls the more button. How do I activate anything in this tree
view? I have done it in the past, and apps then becomes a button I can check,
like the music, and play lists buttons, but I can't figure out how to do it
now. I am running iTunes 12.1.3, but I imagine it is the same in the more
modern version of iTunes. Thanks for any information.

At My Wit's End with Listening to Only Checked Music in iTunes

OK, I really do love Apple Music. But when I try to play *only* the music I
have checked it does not comply; when I listen on my iPhone, it shuffles
through everything I’ve got in in My Music, including unchecked items. If this
no longer works if one subscribes to Apple Music, what is the point of having
it?

2015-12-02 Thread Candy Lowe
Traci,
I, too, tried the app and found it rather unaccessible. However, there was a
time a few years back that I was able to use it with my computer. Just go to
canistreamit.com. I rarely use my computer any more, so I don't know if it has
reamined accessible with jaws. I don't know of any other app.

Re: In iTunes On The PC, activating Apps in the More Button Tree View

2015-12-02 Thread Jennie Facer
Hi,
The easiest method I can tell you is to go to iTunes, press control plus 7. Now
you will be in your apps tree view. Now you can tab to the list box. I have
found that the right and left arrows do better at telling me what needs updated
rather than up and down.
Hope this helps,

Re: Chrome and it's excess ability on the Mac and iOS

2015-12-02 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Chrome has been accessible with VoiceOver on IOS for as long as I can
remember. There's no ChromeVox needed.

For my part, I'm all about using the right tool for the job and having
as many options as possible. I don't mind learning some new key strokes
in order to use VoiceOver on my iPhone or NVDA/JAWS on Windows or Orca
on Linux. the same would be true for ChromeVox on ChromeOS. I'm also OK
with learning ChromeVox on Chrome if it means being able to collaborate
with my peers on Google Docs, and ChromeVox with Chrome is the only
combination I've found that lets me do this.

Re: upgrading from 4s

2015-12-02 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Don't get me wrong, an iPhone 4S is going to be pretty frustratingly
slow when compared to an iPhone 6. A newer phone with a faster processor
is going to out perform a 4S. I've used an iPhone 4S from IOS 5 up
through IOS 9 though, and except for those first releases of IOS 8, it
didn't get appreciably slower with each release of IOS, and in fact,
performance did improve with IOS 9. My employer got me an iPhone 5, and
it's noticeably faster than my iPhone 4S, but not so much that it makes
the 4S unusable for me.

Hi Chris,

but having said that, I don't think that the mobile technology market
has changed in the last 15 to 20 years in terms of it's advancement, or
should I say, the speed in which the technology changes has remained at
the same pace for a while now, and the same goes with Laptops and touch
screen devices being moved into the mainstream.

In any case, I can't explain why, then, that my 4S is so slow to do
anything.

When I compare it to my 6S, it's practically a dog's age before I can
get anything to happen on it.

I think it started with iOS 8.0, but don't quote me on that.

I've checked the background apps that are running, minimized any
extraneous processes, and the difference is negligible. I do have to
say that the battery life has greatly improved with iOS 9 since it
introduced "Low Power Mode", but again, that doesn't help me in my quest
to accomplish tasks faster.

Re: Chrome and it's excess ability on the Mac and iOS

2015-12-02 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Actually, last I knew, Apple forced 3rd party browsers to use an older
web infrastructure then what's available to Safari, so if you're using
Chrome or Firefox then you may not get the same performance that you're
seeing with Safari.

There are reasons to use other browsers though. You may like the
interface of the other browsers better. Another browser may handle some
web pages better. I know I switched to Chrome because I just had so many
problems with Safari and a web page I frequented a lot.

You can also sync things like your favourites, log in ID's, open tabs
and so on across all devices running a browser. Since I run Windows and
Linux in addition to IOS, I like using Chrome and hope to start using
Firefox soon because I also run these browsers on these other platforms.

On 02/12/15 15:20, Mike Arrigo wrote:

On I O S, Apple requires that all browsers use the safari engine to
display web pages, so, really, there is not much benefit to using
another browser besides safari itself, unless having your history on
another browser sync to another device is important to you. Chrome on
the mac is useable with voiceover, though it doesn't work as well as
safari. I have found that some elements cannot be clicked on,
particularly clickable text that functions as a link, but is created
using java script. I think chromevox does have its place, and can be
useful when accessing certain sites with chrome, and the good thing is,
you can have chromevox installed and enable or disable it as desired.
For browsing on the mac, safari is my primary browser, but I will turn
to chrome if safari has problems with a particular site.
Original message:

I recently saw that there is an update for chrome for iOS. I don't
know about the Mac side. But I am sending this to both lists because I
am interested in the current state of the excess ability of this
browser on both platforms. I am not interested in learning chromevox,
as I think it is stupid to have to learn a whole new convoluted set of
keystrokes just to use one program. And in my long history of using
computers, I have gone through enough learning and unlearning of
keystrokes, that I feel I have earned the right to have excess ability
without having to learn yet another set of them, which will not be
applicable to the whole system. So, what kind of excess ability can I
have on the Mac with chrome using Yosemite and voiceover? How about on
iOS running iOS 9?

VoiceOver Commands for Twitteerific?

2015-12-02 Thread Fazil
Hi, list.

I use Twitteerificwith IPhone6Plus and IOS9.02.

My question is do we have any specific VoiceOver commands for Twitteerific?

For instance, how can I know what is trending in my city, who I am
following, who are following me, sending a direct message etc?

Thanks much for your help.

2015-12-02 Thread 'SammieDogsMom' via VIPhone

I upgraded from a 4- s to a 6-plus last year. I was running IOS-8 on my 4 s,
but the motivating factor for me to upgrade was space. The 6-plus has much more
space than my 4 s had. I also like the bigger screen on the 6-plus even though
I had to get accustomed to it.

2015-12-02 Thread Kimber Gardner
Hmm, that is strange. I just did this same thing the other day with
some mp3 files I created from youtube.

After you put the mp3 files in the automatically add to iTunes folder,
do you close and reopen iTunes? If so, are the files still in the
automatically add folder at that point?

Jennifer,

Does the adhesive make the phone sticky when you remove it from the

a very nice case, and it's on sale right now too.

Re: Chrome and it's excess ability on the Mac and iOS

2015-12-02 Thread Mike Arrigo

I don't know
about the Mac side. But I am sending this to both lists because I am
interested in the current state of the excess ability of this browser
on both platforms. I am not interested in learning chromevox, as I
think it is stupid to have to learn a whole new convoluted set of
keystrokes just to use one program.

Re: ITunes, MP3 files, and syncing to an iPhone 5S.

2015-12-02 Thread Kimberly
Well I've hit the limit of my iTunes knowledge. Sorry about that. I hope
someone else will be able to figure out what's going on. Good luck.

Re: An iPhone Functioning as a CCTV?

2015-12-02 Thread Tom Lange
Hi.
One of my students posed the same question probably a year or so ago, so I did
some searching through the app store and found a little app called
Magnificicent. After reading about it, I downloaded and installed it, then let
my student take it for a spin and she loved it.  I don't remember its price;
seems to me it was only a buck or two, maybe ?ree tops and for an extra three
bucks you can get its advanced feature set as an in-app purchase.

There are free and paid versions of an app called Magnificent which is produced
by Habitual Digital. Neither is the one you'll want. The Magnificent app that
I'm talking about comes from Mobilica. Check it out!

Re: ITunes, MP3 files, and syncing to an iPhone 5S.

2015-12-02 Thread Alan Lemly
I'm curious about these ringtones that you say show up on your phone and in
iTunes but that only play in iTunes.

Go into your clock app and set up a timer event for a minute and see what tones
are available to play at the end of the event. Are the new ones recently
transferred that you've been posting about included in the list of tones from
which to choose? If so, does a sample of them play during this process? Do the
tones provided by apple with your device present and play during this timer
event setup process?

I've found that setting up a quick timer event is the easiest way to test
available tones and I'm curious what you see when you try this.
