Re: Open Library.org with Adobe acrobat

2016-08-14 Thread Ann Smith
Well, a bunch of these books are as early as 1894 and up through the 80s and
stuff. I don't know if they would still consider that protected Daisy. Says
protected days you next to it. Should I just stay out of the Daisy section, and
go through the EPUB section
Archive.org says it has some kind of a book reader, so you can read the
electronic books. I can't find it. I'm in St. Louis Missouri, so I don't think
open library is affiliated with our overdrive service year.
Quite a lot of upside like to read off of there. His books are so old, you can
get them from Kendall or other typical places for the blind.
Sorry about the typos.

RE: VoiceOver volume problem

2016-08-14 Thread Ron
Hi,

The fact that Roger switches to the ear piece from the speaker is not new with
the last update. It was doing it before the update. They sure have a lot to
work on in this app. I also hate the fact that when I tell it I don’t want
notifications, it asks me again every time I stop the microphone. I should be
able to turn off notifications and then not be bothered with a question every
time I transmit a message.

This has been reported so, I guess we have to give them time to work on it.
They should look at fixing what needs to be fixed before trying to bring in new
features. Creating a group and inviting people to it is not as easy as it
could be.

Hi Kate. This is new in Roger. What you're describing is a new feature called
live mode which behaves the way you described. It can be turned off in settings
or find the settings button and flick right. Double tap on that and Roger will
behave the way it did before the update. I like it on but I can see where it
can get annoying especially in groups.

I will usually just double tap with two fingers, causing my chosen audio

the other weird thing that’s happened since the new Roger update is that Roger

though I don’t have Roger in the notifications list.

I have written the app developers in hopes they will fix this issue!

Hi,

Are you sure the volume drop is not because the sound has switched to the ear

question. Are you, by any chance, using the Roger app. That is the app that
seems to cause the problem for me.

Re: Open Library.org with Adobe acrobat

2016-08-14 Thread Kelly Pierce
The DAISY Copyright protected books from the Open Library cannot be
accessed on an iPhone or computer. Only devices that play NLS talking
books can access them like the Bookport Plus, victor Stream and
Braille Note. NLS has a list of supported devices online or you could
call your regional library and someone can read you the list. Of
course, Open Library books whose copyright has expired can be read on
the iPhone as plain text files.

The Open Library books have not been edited or formatted. They were
digitized by high speed scanners with automatic page turners. These
books are what books would be like from a volunteer Bookshare scanner
before they are carefully proofread by a volunteer proofreader.

Removing A Book From Bard App Wish List When Remove Doesn't Work

2016-08-14 Thread Arnold Schmidt

This mainly will be of use to those who have accumulated hundreds of books on
their wish list, and look up a book they wish to add to their list, only to
discover that it already is on the list. The remove from list button, which
appears at the end of the annotation will not remove it and searching through
all those books to find it so it can be downloaded is about more trouble than
it is worth. What to do? When your search finds the book, tap the title of the
book, and a dialogue will appear, containing additional information about the
book. At the end of this information is a remove button that will remove it.
One then has to look up the book again to add it back to the wish list, but now
it is at the beginning so it easily can be downloaded.

RE: PRESSING A NUMBER TO ANSWER A CALL ON THE IPHONE

2016-08-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Is your keypad showing? If you see the phone number and buttons such as Mute,
Speaker and so on you need to find a button called “Keypad”, double tap it and
at that point that keypad will show and you can press any numbers you need.
Similarly, if you are on a call and the keypad is showing, but maybe you want
to mute the call or start a 3-way call you will have to find the “Hide” button
which is at the bottom right and it will hide the keypad and give you access to
all the other buttons.
It takes a bit of practice to bring up the keypad quickly if you need it, but
it can be done.

RE: iTunes 12.3.4 or whatever it is isa mess

2016-08-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I would differ with that statement. When iTunes did a major change of it’s user
interface from version 11 to version 12 many features such as syncing apps or
syncing files for specific apps became mostly unuseable. That is not because
Jaws or whichever other screenreader can’t handle this, but it’s because of the
way this is done in iTunes.
In one of the lesser updates not long ago suddenly Jaws won’t read the genre,
artist and album columns of the column browser any more. If it’s not because of
something Apple did in iTunes then why is that if it worked perfectly fine
before?
If Apple used HTML5 programming and followed web accessibility guidelines for
iCloud.com, the iCloud.com site would probably be perfectly accessible.
Accessibility happens on several levels and really good accessibility is a
result of application and web designers making it possible for screenreader
designers to work with what is there.
If Apple had no such framework in place for iOS apps, for example, Voiceover
accessibility would not exist.

Yes! This is especially true when iTunes keeps breaking things on each new
incremental update. It seems egotistical and insane for them to suggest that
the screen readers should come out with a fix every month or so for what they
have arbitrarily broken ☹

I think this is definitely an Apple Accessibility issue since while the
screenreader makers like Jaws/Window Eyes, NVDA etc. also need to do their
part, I think there ust is not enough cooperation between Apple and them. It’s
like Microsoft and Jaws, if you listened to Jonathan’s recent Podcast where he
interviewed this guy from Microsoft who said that Microsoft has done and is
doing a bunch of stuff to make things better and they are providing Jaws with
the framework to make the experience better. It seems to me that Apple somehow
is not doing this with iTunes and this comes down to a basic commitment by
Apple to make iTunes as accessible as possible on the Mac with Voiceover and on
the PC with Jaws, Window Eyes and NVDA.

Hi Larry and others,

There was an iTunes update yesterday, the current version is iTunes Version
12.4.3.1. Unfortunately little seems to be fixed and certainly newer versions
of iTunes 12 have taken steps backward with respect to accessibility. If you
use the column browser with Genres, Artists and Albums, these list views are
not read (at least not by the latest version of Jaws 17). 2 or 3 versions ago
it would read them and, for some reason, say “L1” in front of whatever else it
said, now it will just say List View.
I am going to write to Apple accessibility since while I use iTunes less
frequently in connection with my iPhone, I still may want to use it at home on
my PC and of course there are some tasks like syncing Ringtones etc. one can
only do with iTunes. As Brian Tong from the AppleByte Podcast always says when
Apple has dropped the ball on something, I would call this a “bad Apple”.
Hopefully others will join me in writing about better iTunes accessibility.
There are I think around 2,000 members on this list now and even if only 1 out
of 4 took the time to send a message, maybe if Apple Accessibility received 500
messages they’ll understand that this should be addressed. It would certainly
be more effective than only 5 messages. And while people are at it, why not
make the subject “Accessibility of iTunes and iCloud.com which

2016-08-14 Thread christopher hallsworth
Hello everyone.

While I much prefer Braille Screen Input on iOS, I discovered with interest a
post on the Applevis website
www.applevis.com
about a tutorial and third party keyboard app called Braille Easy. This app
lets you type Braille in one hand. This reminds me a lot of another Braille
typing application, TypeInBraille, except this one is I think better because at
least Braille Easy Keyboard can be used system wide whereas TypeInBraille as of
today cannot. The only drawback is it cannot do contracted Braille, and the
only languages supported are English and Arabic. Having said that, it’s
interesting. Oh by the way it is free compared to TypeInBraille which is paid
last I checked. Go search the app store for Braille Easy. Happy typing.

Request for Help with Numbers for iOS

2016-08-14 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I need a little help with getting started with the Numbers app, for iOS.

If there is anyone who would be willing to have a short voice conversation
either on the telephone or via Skype, I would appreciate it a great deal.

My questions are not complicated but, as time is a factor, I would much
prefer to talk rather than type so as to better grasp the nuances of various
concepts.

Please send me a reply, off-list, to mk...@ucla.edu with your contact info
and availability.

Thank you,

Mark

RE: VoiceOver volume problem

2016-08-14 Thread Chip Orange
Hi,

As for Roger messages suddenly playing, this is due to a new setting of theirs
which they have placed on the main screen of Roger, not in its Settings area;
it is called “Live play” or something similar. It’s not a bug, but incredibly
is designed to do this.

I think it’s definitely Roger doing this somehow.

I will usually just double tap with two fingers, causing my chosen audio
whatever to play(usually the book I am currently reading), wait for the book to
come on, then two finger double tap again, and things are back to normal.

the other weird thing that’s happened since the new Roger update is that Roger
messages will suddenly start playing, even if the app is closed, and even
though I don’t have Roger in the notifications list.

I have written the app developers in hopes they will fix this issue!

standard sound level is not affected (that is, it’s fine).

Restarting VoiceOver and/or Restarting the phone does not cure the problem.

I think this began around 9.3.4, but I also received a new Roger update around
the same time, so it could be either, or perhaps even some other update.

Are others noticing this, and do you have any ideas on what to do? I did call
Apple support, and they had me turn off VoiceOver and restart the phone, but
this only solved the issue for a short time before it recurred. They hinted
that perhaps resetting all settings may help, but that people often complained
about this as a debugging step (and I don’t know how to do it, and they never
did tell me).

Movies on YouTube

2016-08-14 Thread Deidre Muccio
Hey there, has anyone noticed how many full movies on YouTube? Hell with
Netflix. Anyway I just watched two this morning Proof which features a blind
guy and Russell Crowe. And blink which features madeleine Stowe is a blind
woman. Both are superb little movies. The latter has kind of a hokey ending but
it doesn't really matter the acting is pretty damn good and the characters are
very realistic or at least in the latter movie Blink. Give them a try!

Re: Open Library.org with Adobe acrobat

2016-08-14 Thread Richard Turner
The open library has lots and lots of material, but I've never found them
terribly well formatted.
If you want the DAISY version, you don't want to follow the link that says,
"read online" you follow the book title link, then the link to "editions" then
the daisy link, then the link that says download DAISY zip.
At that link, you can get the "more" button and then download it directly into
Voice Dream Reader.
But, as I have found, nothing is marked up beyond the beginning of the book.
The same with the ePub versions.
There are often dozens if not hundreds of editions to pick from.
Good luck,
Richard

Re: VoiceOver volume problem

2016-08-14 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi Kate. This is new in Roger. What you're describing is a new feature called
live mode which behaves the way you described. It can be turned off in settings
or find the settings button and flick right. Double tap on that and Roger will
behave the way it did before the update. I like it on but I can see where it
can get annoying especially in groups.

Re: VoiceOver volume problem

2016-08-14 Thread Caitlyn Furness
I think it’s definitely Roger doing this somehow.

I will usually just double tap with two fingers, causing my chosen audio
whatever to play(usually the book I am currently reading), wait for the book to
come on, then two finger double tap again, and things are back to normal.

the other weird thing that’s happened since the new Roger update is that Roger
messages will suddenly start playing, even if the app is closed, and even
though I don’t have Roger in the notifications list.

I have written the app developers in hopes they will fix this issue!
