Hi foks,

Is there a good GPS app for hiking? I have apps for on the road but as I’m
doing more off road hiking they are not helpful.

What are people using for hiking navigation and GPS info?

Thank you,

No one is suppressing anyone's opinion or right to make their own choices.

There isn't even a debate. Only a few people putting their 2 cents worth in to
a discussion that is most likely fizzled out.

Take care,

I don't agree myself, but I'm not sure why we're debating Android versus IOS in
this thread. Each has their pros and cons and someone may prefer one over the
other. I for myself am glad we have choices, and I'm going to let people make
up their own minds on which they prefer.

Hmm, I tried that this morning, and it didn’t work. I wonder if it’s because I
also had a podcast streaming at the same time, so Siri thought the stop request
applied to the media and not the alarm. Thanks for letting me know it works
though. I’ll keep experimenting until I figure something out!

Re: How accessible is an Apple watch

2020-06-16 Thread Shirley Baker
I think I got my apple series 3 watch about two years ago. I don't know how I
have been able to get along without it for so long. I sometimes read my email
on it, read messages, use the timer. I only have two faces on it but that works
for me. Sometimes I answer a phone call with it but I have a hard time knowing
who is calling so don't use that part very often. I'm always forgetting the
date so that's very handy for me. Also, I have many alarms set on it.

Trying to replace my smart speaker with my iPhone

2020-06-16 Thread chaltain
This morning I was playing around with my iPhone, Airpods and Siri, and I
thought I could use this setup instead of my Alexa. When steeping my tea, I
used Siri to set my timer to five minutes. When the timer went off though, I
couldn't figure out how to stop the timer alarm with Siri. I had to find my
iPhone and hit the power button to turn off the alarm. Is there a trick to
using Siri to turn off a ringing alarm hands free?

Re: How accessible is an Apple watch

2020-06-16 Thread goshawk on horseback
as one can get a range of straps for the apple watch, there is a good chance
that you should find one to accommodate you. I mainly use mine as a swimming
tracker and alarm, as I mainly swim in open water, so it is handy to have an
accessible vibrating alarm that will for example, give me an idea that I
have had a certain amount of time in swimming and should think about heading
back to shore.

Hi everyone,
Hope all of you are doing well. I too have the same questions as I do not
own an apple watch. However, I am looking into purchasing it in the future.
I was going to purchase one, but unfortunately, the pandemic hit so I am
unable to try one on for myself. Also, I have an added challenge because I
have small wrists since I am very petite. Does the Apple Watch fit small
wrists?
Also, did you buy the EarPods when you got the Apple Watch in order to hear
the VoiceOver on the Apple Watch while in crowded settings?
How are you able to hear VoiceOver through the Apple Watch if you don’t own
EarPods in noisy environments?
Can the Apple Watch serve as a suplemental mobility aid for navigation in
addition to other tools like a cane or service dog?

What were the primary reasons for purchasing the Apple Watch?
For those of you who are totally blind, what are the most important uses for
your Apple Watch?

Hope this helps.
Stay safe and take care,

Priscilla

Re: How accessible is an Apple watch

2020-06-16 Thread Brandon Olivares
I love my Apple Watch. It was my last big purchase before the pandemic lol.

I don’t do much on it either but it’s nice just to have. I like getting
notifications on it as it’s easier to check them right on my wrist. I also love
that I can text someone on my watch. And I enjoy occasionally using the walkie
talkie feature to annoy my wife if she’s in a different part of the house.

Re: How accessible is an Apple watch

2020-06-16 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi Terri,

Yes, the Apple Watch is accessible. I use it for tracking activity, reading and
responding to text messages, reading notifications, and more. I wrote a book
about using the watch, which is available from National Braille Press. It's a
couple of years old, but the setup info is still pretty accurate; there are
just features that aren't covered because they weren't available yet.
www.nbp.org

Mystic Access has an audio tutorial that is very good and was updated within
the past year.

Best,
Anna

Re: How accessible is an Apple watch

2020-06-16 Thread Wayne Merritt
The Apple Watch is very accessible. What do you want to use it for? I
use mine to track heart rate, track sleep, let me know my activity
during a day (though this used to be more important to me before
everything shut down), know when sunrise or set is, be alerted ot my
next appointment, vibrate the time, and vibrate each quarter hour. I
can do many of these things from the watch face, kind of like a home
screen for your watch. I don't use my watch for a lot, mostly health
and telling the time, but each person has their own uses and use
cases. Also, some things you need separate apps to accomplish the
task, for instance, I use an app called Sleep Watch on my iPhone and
Apple Watch. There is an in-app purchase but I can use it for basic
sleep tracking for free.

Be well,
Wayne Merritt

It is amazing and fantastic.

How accessible is an Apple watch

2020-06-16 Thread Terri Stimmel

Hello everyone,

I am curious to learn more about the Apple watch.

How accessible are they?

Are they easy to use? Or more difficult?

For those of you who have them, what sorts of things do you do with them?

Can you track your heartbeat with them?

What about your sleep?

Any thoughts are much appreciated. Also, if anyone knows of any
tutorials, or things I could read, please pass them along.

Thank you,

Terri

photos question

2020-06-16 Thread Vicki W.
Hi,

If anyone is up to date on taking and saving photos, can you please give me
step-by-step instructions on how to do it, from taking the picture all the way
to saving it in Dropbox?

I finally managed to save it, but don't ask me how!

I'm using the latest IOS update. I hadn't done it for awhile, but as I remember
from before, it was very simple and now not so.

Thank you.

Vicki

Hey Kelly thank you very much for the information I really appreciate that I
was looking at it but I did order a Sim from consumer cellular just to try it
out. I could just take the AT&T some out and put in the other Sim and see how
it works. They do a plan with unlimited text and talk and 35 GB of data they
call there unlimited plan. For around $30. Which I think is very good. But I’ll
find out how it works.

call there unlimited plan. For around $30. Which I think is very good. But I’ll
find out how it works.

Re: smart case battery

2020-06-16 Thread Michael Feir
You may have to add the battery widget to page one if it isn't already
there. Also, widgets have the ability to be set to show more or less. I
have my battery widget show more so that it includes all possible battery
states of various devices I may have connected via Bluetooth. You can
change the order in which widgets appear on your page one. I have mine
right near the top since I use it frequently. Hope that helps.

I agree with you James about Android vs iOS.

Also, thanks for that clever Volume Down tip!

Hi,

Only just my little two cents worth but, I found Android confusing and
frustrating to learn. And Android has limitations for the visually impaired,
at least for me.

I find IOS menus to make common sense for the most part. IOS is actually a bit
fun to work with.

All stay safe,

Thanks for that tip, James. I'll have to try it the next time I need things to
be quieter.

I've never had an Android, but I'm still riding around the learning curve for
the iPhone. I learn stuff as I need to go, I guess. This list is great for
that. Everyone is supportive, so you'll get a lot out of hanging out here.

More Later,
Dani

Hi,

Can someone tell me which IPhones can be wirelessly charged or maybe it would
be easier to list the older phones that cannot? Can the new SE2020 use a
wireless charger?

Thanks.

Re: Choosing a phone company

2020-06-16 Thread juan mojena
I’ve dealt with all kinds of customer representatives from AT&T, Apple, Apple
disability, Microsoft accessibility, even one plus, my wife’s phone. They all
have customer representatives who are excellence and those Whoborder on the
intellectually challenged or those with a very heavy foreign accent. It was
very difficult dealing with one plus being that my wife is completely on
knowledgeable about android and I don’t know or have it figured out how to turn
on talkback on her phone. It took more than a week back-and-forth with the
company trying to get them to take the phone to repair it.I think that Iam
going to have to buy a cheap android phone just to learn how to use talk back
So that I can help my wife. .

Just wondering if anyone uses numbers with voice over on an iPhone, or if
there's a good

RE: LOL, what good is the mute switch if Voice Over shouts out the name of the incoming call

2020-06-16 Thread bentleyj1952
Hi,

I believe that your right. But, I think I have come up with a more simple
method of telling my SE2 to not make any noise for in-coming calls but still
vibrate for the calls.

I hold down the volume down button for one second and toggle on the mute switch.

I can still receive calls and regaining volume for VO when I need only takes
just holding down the volume up button for about one second.

I have had this SE2 for around 3 weeks. Its my first iPhone and there is still
much to learn for me.

I like this phone better than any Android phone that I have ever owned.

Cheers,

James B

Hi.
I'm using an iPhone 8 with 13.5.1, and under the Phone option in
Settings there's an Announce Calls setting. You could double-tap on
the Never setting, then go back in and change it to Always when you
want calls to be announced again. I'm assuming you'll still receive
calls when the Mute switch is on, that they won't be announced, and
will go to VoiceMail if not answered.

Or you could turn on Do Not Disturb and choose the option to only have
those listed in your phone's Favorites or who are in your Contacts and
have Emergency Bypass turned on under their names come through.

HTH,
Dani

Re: smart case battery

2020-06-16 Thread Joshua Hendrickson
I don't know if you can. I had a smart battery case that if you
recharged your iPhone, the battery case would recharge at the same
time. The only reason why I stopped using the smart case was it
turned my iPhone's lightning port into a micro USB port and I needed
the lightning connector to hook up wired headphones for recording my
guitar playing.
