Re: Simple calculator for iPad
Hi Jenn, Thank goodness the button labels are showing up for someone else! I thought I was going delusional, since I've been using this app with VoiceOver for a year now, and I also checked this app loaded onto an iPad running the same iOS version and model as Ed is having problems with. Can I ask which iPad you're using? I've checked the Big Calculator Free app on a first generation iPad Mini running iOS 6.1.2, and a fourth generation iPad running iOS 7.0.4. I relabeled three buttons: the memory register buttons are labeled as MC, M+, M-, and MR corresponding to the iPhone labels of Memory Clear, Memory Add, Memory Subtract, and Memory Recall. The app uses a hyphen symbol for the minus sign, and it isn't pronounced by VoiceOver appended to the M, so I relabeled the third button to add the word minus to the end of the field. The buttons for x squared and x cubed that precede square root x were also relabeled to include the second word, because you hear VO say the x: separately for the 2 and 3. I really like this calculator app, so I'm glad it really is still accessible! Hi, I recommend Big Calculator Free by Tioga Designs, LLC: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/big-calculator-free/id374174252?mt=8 The Big Calc Free app has some features that even VOCalc doesn't have -- like being able to check the contents of your memory sum register just by touching the key on the keyboard, and having a simple key and method for per cent calculations of either tax or tips with minimal keystrokes and a few more keys for volume and area calculations even though this is a simple keyboard. Yes, Big Calc Free works very well with VoiceOver on the iPad. It may be because there is an in-app purchase option to use this as a talking calculator that the accessibility is so good. Of course, you don't need to purchase that option. And when I said that you could check the contents of the memory register by simply touching the key for it on the keypad, I meant exactly that: a blind VoiceOver user who starts adding items to the memory register will find that once there are numbers in the memory register its key label on the keypad updates to the register contents, so touching that key now gives the number in that register instead of MR. RE: Simple calculator for iPad
It's weird if you have unlabeled buttons. The only unlabeled buttons were under the paper tape section, where the button covers the text area of the subsequent text. So if you ignore the unlabeled button and flick right to the text, you get to exactly the same navigation controls. Are you in landscape or portrait mode? This app is most easily used in Portrait mode. That also means the paper tape area -- which is simply the record you can check or email -- is in a pop up and out of the way of the main calculating area. Hello Ed, You wrote: Ester, I downloaded the Big Calculator Free app. All the number buttons work with VO. The equals, plus, minus and other buttons do not work with VO. All it says on those when I put my finger on them is button. Are you having the same issues with your Big Calculator Fee app? All those buttons work for me, and I didn't relabel them. From the bottom right corner, I hear VO say, equals, plus, hyphen (for the minus sign), divided by. None of these buttons were relabeled. I checked a first generation iPad Mimi running iOS 6.1.2 and a 4th generation iPad (not mine) running iOS 7.0.4. Both iPads installed the app under iOS 6 and were upgraded. Do you have one of the newest model iPads? The only keys I relabeled were for the Memory register M minus because the hyphen wasn't pronounced, and the x squared and x cubed buttons, which had a first label of x and then either a2 or 3 if you flicked again. RE: Simple calculator for iPad
Ed, I'm baffled by the unlabeled buttons you're finding. All the keypad buttons for Big Calc Free are spoken by VoiceOver on the two different iPad models I mentioned (iPad Mini first generation and 4th generation iPad). And that has worked under both iOS 6 and iOS 7. If Big Calculator Free is really not working for you, try the paid app VOCalc (that's capital letters V O followed by Calc with a capital C and no spaces in the whole name. Here's the Apo Store URL: VOCalc ($2.99) https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/vocalc/id619478812?mt=8 I'd still be curious to learn if others find that the Big Calculator Free app loads on the iPad with unlabeled buttons for the calculator keypad. If I had to label all the buttons for operations and the memory registers I certainly wouldn't recommend this app. And this has been used with VoiceOver for over a year. The only thing I can't comment on is whether the default color scheme works well for low-vision users. There's an in-app purchase option for Settings Themes that gives you more options for rounding and a money mode that automatically places decimals. This also included large font options for the paper tape and more color themes. If there are low-vision users who try this app, and don't have the same problem Ed did with button labels, maybe they can report back. • Big Calculator Free by Tioga Designs LLC https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/big-calculator-free/id374174252?mt=8 Easiest to use this app in portrait mode. For more details on the neat features in this app, check my archived list post: • Re: Calculator for iPad http://www.mail-archive.com/viphone%40googlegroups.com/msg59283.html HTH. Hello Esther, I have an iPad 4 running 7.0.4. Why do you think my buttons are not working with VO. Like I said only the number buttons announce. Re: Simple calculator for iPad
Hello Ed, I'm really puzzled about why you are not hearing the buttons. I wish someone else who has an iPad would try this out and report back. I tried deleting the app from the iPad 4 running 7.0.4 and re-downloading it, and the buttons are still announced by VoiceOver. The only thing that is different about the situation is that the initial download of the app was done under iOS 6, and then the iPad was upgraded to iOS 7 by software download, and the app was updated to the latest version. At this point the only thing I can try is deleting the app and downloading it again, but all the buttons are announced when I do this (except on the paper tape where the sections for ads are announced as button and then if you flick right you'll hear the test descriptions of the contents -- double tapping on the text gives the same result as double tapping on the initial unlabeled button announcment). I don't suppose you know anyone else with an iPad who could try to install this app? Even if they removed the labels from the buttons on the other keys in the most recent update, I don't understand how these could be present in the versions I have. After all, I didn't label all those other buttons! Is you iPad nearly full? Maybe if there is limited storage space or a faulty section of the memory, part of the program code is overwritten?.Have you tried deleting and redownloading the app? Honestly, I don't have any more ideas. This app should just work. I only relabeled three buttons to have more convenient lables -- not because these were unlabeled when I started. If an app gave me this much trouble, I would probably just move on and try a different app. Sorry not to have better suggestions. I may ask on another list if someone will try downloading and checking this app. Best, Esther On Friday, December 20, 2013 6:28:05 PM UTC-10, Pinky wrote: Hello Esther, I have an iPad 4 running 7.0.4.
