Rose,

I think you can be pretty sure that if the app is in the app store which means
it has been tested by Apple it’s not a Nigerian scam. I am not saying apps
which don’t work as advertised don’t make it into the app store, but the Seeing
Assistant apps have been around for a while and while the developers are not
native English speakers, they also have posted to this list.

Pablo,

Whether we give money to Apple by buying iPhones will make no difference, I
mean zero.
Apple sold over ten million iPhones during the launch weekend, I think it
was something like 4 million during the first 24 hours of when preorders
were available on the internet. This also does not include China where the
iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have not yet been released and where Apple will sell a
ton of new iPhones once they become available.
Do you really think that even if 50,000 were bought by blind or visually
impaired people that would make a dent? Based on 10 million that would be
0.5% and I bet that the number of phones bought by blind people is much
smaller.
By the way, anybody who buys a new 5S now will get it with iOS 8
preinstalled, just because it is last year's phone doesn't mean Apple will
ship it with last year's iOS.
Anybody who has an iPhone of course can choose to stay with iOS 7.1.2, but
anybody who is in the market for an iPhone now whether a 5S, 6 or 6 Plus
will have to deal with iOS 8. I also think that Apple does listen. Yes, they
haven't listened a lot I think during the Beta cycle to the few blind people
who submitted Voiceover related bug reports, but I have no doubt that iOS 8
Voiceover bugs will be addressed and saying that Apple does not listen is
just not true.
Whether things will be worse when iOS 9 is release remains to be seen,
claiming it will be worse at this point is nothing but a claim or guess
which can't be substantiated.
Enjoy iOS 7.1.2, I think it was an excellent choice not to update and I'm
sure if you keep checking the list you'll hear all about it when bugs are
fixed.

Sieghard

Nope, are another solution. Keep IOs 7.1.2, and do not upgrade to IOs8, like
this, no bugs will be doing anything in your iDevice. If you don't have and
iPhone, do not buy any iPhone 6s or iPhone 6. Just buy an iPhone 5s, that is
cheaper, and with IOs 7.1.2. The blind community is been very affected with
these bugs, and apple is paying to us the same attention that walmart does
when a blind person make complain about the traffic in the stores. I mean,
nothing.
We have the solution. We have the money that they want, we have it in our
pockets. We have the power. Do not give them money, until they have a good
thing to offert to us. Because if we give the money before they do anything,
probably, they will not do anything, or not what we want really.
I know that they people who has business with apple, is going to defend
apple. Even though, one year ago I said the same thing that today the most
part of the list is saying.
Let me tell you one more thing. Next year, this issue is going to be worse.
Unless we stop giving money to someone who is not doing good things, and
keep the good things that we had before. Like iPhone 5s with IOs 7.1.2, or
our old 4s, etc.

If you continue defending the apple business, you will not be improving your
life quality. You will not improve the apple devices, you will not improve
the IOs8 quality either. Maybe you are protecting your own business now, but
one year ago, I said the same things that now the people on the list, and

But if you continue on that position, next year this issue is going to be
worse, not better. Business doesn't work like this.
They want the money of the customers, if they don't receive our money, they
need to improve their products, to make it fancy or attractive for us.
They will not improve IOs 8 quality, or accessibility quality, if we looks
so happy with their job. When you every year pay almost a thousand of
dollars for one new apple phone, it means that you are happy with what ever
they have done. Again, I am not talking about only about blind people. I am
talking about every body, because you and every body here, been blind, is

Ok, it is my point. Many times, we run to the apple store, to buy what ever
they put on their desks. They are making money with our money. But we are
getting a lot of problems with their IOs releases every year. What is the
solution?
Run and buy a new iPhone every year?
Get the IOs bugs, and wait until apple developers fix their bugs?
Be patience with apple?
They are patience with the customers?
Are you paying them little bit by little bit, or you have to pay everything
on one time, or you have to sign a contract for 2 or 3 years with who ever
sales iPhones?
Why we have to be patience??
No, of course no.

Correct, and I believe it was something like 9 people who actually reported
their iPhone bent out of several millions which were sold. I bent my iPhone
5S a few months ago but it was my own fault and if you were to really look
at what happened with those iPhone 6 Plus units that did bent you would
probably find that it also was the user's fault. Don't forget that the media
is totally out to slam Apple wherever they can so everything even if it
really is not a problem gets blown out of proportion. Apparently you are one
of those who believe everything they read online... bad idea, Pablo, you can
read anything online even many reports of people who love iOS 8 *smile*.

Did you also read the Consumer Reports follow-up report where they purchased
an iPhone 6+ and tested it against sevcral other phones of the same size?

Well, the iPhone withstood 20 pounds more pressure before starting to bend
compared with it's closest competitor. In other words, the story about Apple

The only way to improve products is to use them and report bugs when we find
them, as stated before if every person using accessibility stopped buying it
wouldn't make not a single bit of difference, and apple isn't making money off
accessibility; they could just stop doing it, period. I can't go in and buy an
android phone off the shelf and use it. I can't buy a windows computer right
off the shelf and use it. I can with apple, and no they don't have to do it at
all. The only way to improve things is from within, and refusing to buy will do
nothing for accessibility.

Hello folks. I usually don't post on

very Reputable, I expect a lot more out of apple. I am extremely
disappointed. I just might let them know this. First, when a person dials a

fixed in IOS 8.02 or not. Second, I use my blue tooth keyboard a lot. Now my
key board does not type or activate items with Voice-over. I can navigate on
the screen. But not type or activate items. On previous updates the issues
mentioned above didn't exist. I took my iPhone to the Apple store and they
couldn't figure out the issue. I am not mad at the technicians at the store.
I am upset with the developers of Apple. They should know better. Also
what's this crap of them updating the software and then having the cell
phone service not working. If apple keeps this bull crap going on they will
lose customer such as myself who have grown to love Apple products. I might

RE: issues I have with the new update.

2014-09-29 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Good morning Pablo,

My iPhone is totally improving my quality of life and my efficiency in
running my business. I think I am speaking for many if I say that the iPhone
has revolutionized the way we can interact with information on a mobil
platform. What Apple has done by putting such a level of accessibility into
an off-the-shelf mass market device might just be the most important thing
that has happened to how blind people use technology ever.
Maybe now an Android phone might give good accessibility, but it sure didn't
when I bought my first iPhone 4 years ago and as somebody who has sensitive
data on my phone relating to my business the iPhone is in my opinion
superior because of the security it offers.

As far as improving Apple products or iOS 8 in particular, not using it and
not providing feedback to Apple regarding the bugs will do even less. If all
blind people thought like you and nobody had downloaded iOS 8 and reported
back to Apple how would they fix the issues? Eventually we all have to
upgrade because our old devices will be no longer supported. Sure, I could
probably use my iPhone 5S with iOS 7.1.2 for another 3 or 4 years, but at
that point I probably start running into problems because app developers are
no longer supporting such an old version of iOS and so on. Then I have 2
options: either upgrade to the latest iOS version which if no blind people
used it and provided bug reports to Apple would probably have even more bugs
as you predict or I could switch to another platform which maybe is better
and maybe it's not.

I think if you are so set on not giving Apple anything you should sell your
iPhone and move to Android. One good thing is that you may not have to
complain avout upgrading because you might not be able to upgrade given the
fragmentation of devices and the fact they often either can't run newer
versions of Android or the carriers don't offer them.

I know we won't see eye to eye on this, but that's of course OK as we all
are entitled to our opinions. I totally agree that iOS 8 especially for
Voiceover users is full of bugs and that it has more bugs than other iOS
releases. But the difference between you and me is that I always try to see
the good things first both in people and products. You focus on the bad
aspects of a product first and for you these negative aspects overshadow the
good aspects. Like I said, everybody is entitled to their opinions and to
look at the world and the people around us any which way they like, but I
prefer the positive approach and believe in trying to make a difference if I
can. I believe Apple still has a commitment to accessibility and that there
are probably reasons why they couldn't fix these bugs when iOS 8 was
released. The new iOS goes with new devices and there is probably so much
more involved in such a release than we'll ever know and it's unlikely they
can simply push it back by a month or 2.

OK, that's my last post regarding this topic so, Pablo, as I said before,
continue with iOS 7.1.2 and decide for yourself when you feel it's safe to
upgrade or maybe skip iOS 8 altogether and see what people say about iOS 9.
If you are so convinced that accessibility in iOS will continue to get worse
than I would totally encourage you to buy an Android phone and see if Google
listens better when you tell them about the bugs in their OS which I have no
doubt exist.

Sieghard

If you continue defending the apple business, you will not be improving your

one year ago, I said the same things that now the people on the list, and

But if you continue on that position, next year this issue is going to be
worse, not better. Business doesn't work like this.
They want the money of the customers, if they don't receive our money, they
need to improve their products, to make it fancy or attractive for us.
They will not improve IOs 8 quality, or accessibility quality, if we looks
so happy with their job. When you every year pay almost a thousand of
dollars for one new apple phone, it means that you are happy with what ever
they have done. Again, I am not talking about only about blind people. I am

Hi Alia,

You shouldn't have said this about not being able to buy an Android phone

The only way to improve products is to use them and report bugs when we find
them, as stated before if every person using accessibility stopped buying it
wouldn't make not a single bit of difference, and apple isn't making money
off accessibility; they could just stop doing it, period. I can't go in and
buy an android phone off the shelf and use it. I can't buy a windows
computer right off the shelf and use it. I can with apple, and no they don't
have to do it at all. The only way to improve things is from within, and
refusing to buy will do nothing for accessibility.

I still don't think it's usable off the shelf, but that's just me. Nothing
comes close to the iphone for being able to buy and go, and the reason I am on

Maybe you are protecting your own business now, but
one year ago, I said the same things that now the people on the list, and
around the world is saying. Apple is abusing.
I am
talking about every body, because you and every body here, been blind, is
people, right?

Yes, apple as android, as many other brans has to work with the
accessibility. It is mandatory now. It is mandatory because the
government in United States is making a hard pression about it. The
problem is that all this brans doesn't have to do a good

Actually, I know bugs are a pain.

But you don't have to get the upgrade or buy a device right away if you've
heard there are bugs. No software/hardware can work out all bugs in a system.
Sometimes the system has to be finally released, even with the knowledge that
there are bugs, some maybe being considered major to some.

Bugs are in the nature of software development. Human's aren't perfect, nor is
software.

Be patient. Apple has in the past released fixes for the bugs. I am by no
means congratulating apple by saying this, I as a software developer understand
release cycles, and the processes involved and all of the pains, and hardships
that come with releasing a new product into the wild.

I'm not sure what you mean by the references below to not being able to
use Android phones or Windows computers off the shelf. A blind person
can enable Talk Back on an Android phone without any sighted assistance.
I've done this myself on a Nexis 7. Windows has also added a hot key to
start Narrator. I'm not sure if I could have set up my wife's Windows 8
computer without any sighted assistance, but after she set up her
account, she handed it to me and I was able to start Narrator, set up my
account and download NVDA without any sighted help.

If you mean that Android and Windows don't have screen access built into
their system and can be setup without sighted assistance then I don't
think that's an accurate statement. If you mean that Talk Back and
Narrator aren't as polished as VoiceOver then that may be true, but
blind people can definitely use Android.

android phone off the shelf and use it. I can't buy a windows computer right
off the shelf and use it. I can with apple, and no they don't have to do it at
all. The only way to improve things is from within, and refusing to buy will do
nothing for accessibility.

one year ago, I said the same things that now the people on the list, and
around the world is saying. Apple is abusing.
I am
talking about every body, because you and every body here, been blind, is
people, right?

I actually think it's inappropriate to come to an iPhone list and bash
Android devices just as I think it's inappropriate to go to an Android
list and bash iPhones. What works for one person may not work for
another. Instead of getting defensive when someone else mentions another
product, I think we should encourage the sharing of accurate knowledge
about all of our options. This spreading of misinformation about other
products, whether intentional or not, just hurts the blindness

product is accessible and meets their needs just as well as what we're
using. Choice is good, and we never know when we might appreciate choice
ourselves. I was a happy Nokia user, but I obviously was glad I had
other options when the Symbian platform went by the boards.

I agree, and we shouldn't circle the wagons when someone shares
their frustrations and/or disappointments about said platform (i.e,

should let them voice their frustrations and/or disappointments to
help determine whether or not some constructive criticism should be

Hi Pablo,

I like a good beating every now and then so Apple, go ahead and have at it
*smile*.
Seriously, I don't thing wife abuse is a good comparison. Also, I don't see
people on this list congratulating Apple. I see a lot of discussion about the
bugs and I am sure a lot of emails are being sent to the accessibility
department with requests to fix the bugs rather than expressions of gratitude
for making the numbers stick.
I mostly see people with the 4S and some with the 5 upgrading, I have a 5S and
I am not giving Apple any money this year yet they are giving me a new
operating system with some very nice new features for free. I am not happy with
the bugs but I am prepared to deal with them until they get fixed otherwise I
would have downgraded back to iOS 7 a long time ago.
I already look forward to our discussions next September, Pablo *smile*.

Take care,
Sieghard

Yes, it is true, apple is very fun. But we don't have to congratulate apple
every time when they put in the market what ever new, more when they have bugs
in their IOs. ur mistake is that we are giving our money, what ever they want,
when they are not been responsible with the customers, when they are been very
arrogant. It is not the apple fault, it is our fault. It is the example of the
man who hits his wife. It is his fault the first time, but each time that his
wife goes to the police department to reject the charges against him, is her
fault.
Every time that apple do things like they are doing now, and we are running to
buy their products, it our fault. Next year, we will get another lesson, and
apple will get our money again.
Any way, yu can do what ever with your money. I will not buy any other apple
product, until I am sure of; 1. I really needed.
2. It really do what I need to do.
3. It really works fine.
bye

Yes, apple as android, as many other brans has to work with the
accessibility. It is mandatory now. It is mandatory because the
government in United States is making a hard pression about it. The
problem is that all this brans doesn't have to do a good
accessibility. They have to create accessibility, how it works is
something that is going to shown by the market. Now, if we, the
blind community every year, go to the apple store, and buy what ever
apple create, as watches, iPhones, when we are getting hard problems
with the accessibility, we are hurting our pocket, because we are
buying something that is not doing a good job. The competence in the
market is who make the good products, is not people who love a
product, and go to buy it, no matter the problems that those products has.

problem has been posted several times before yesterday.
Yes, the keys sticking in the phone keypad is an annoying problem.
Yes, iOS 8 is perhaps more buggy than iOS 7 was but those of us who updated
were warned by several people on this list to not upgrade if you were not
willing to deal with some very annoying bugs.
So if after updating, they want to spend their money on another platform, that
is their choice.

RE: issues I have with the new update.

2014-09-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Kevin,

I agree with Gary, send your bug reports to Apple, email them, call them, do
both, the more the marrier.
The email address for Apple accessibility is very easy, it's
accessibil...@apple.com. The phone number for the Apple Accessibility
Department is 1-877-204-3930.
As you said, remember that just as the people at the Apple Store, the people
at the accessibility department who answer the phones are not the ones who
are in charge. While it's important to let them know that you feel iOS 8 is
a very disappointing release with lots of bugs, it's also important to be
courteous and not rude.

As for switching to an Android phone, well, what can I say, you might love
it or you might regret it even more than upgrading to iOS 8. But if you
think the tapping is greener on the other side of the iOS fence then you are
probably mistaken since I'm sure Android has its own issues.

Oh yes, by the way, there were lots of warnings out there regarding
upgrading especially if you use a bluetooth keyboard a lot and I posted
several times about the number sticking bug when you dial a phone number
saying that if you use your iPhone a lot to make phone calls where you dial
the numbers rather than using your contact list then it might be much better
not to upgrade until these bugs are fixed.
I totally agree that Apple hasn't exactly impressed with the iOS 8 update,
but it's everybody's responsibility to gather the facts before upgrading and
the facts about all these major bugs were out there and easy to find and
read about. In addition to that you could have downgraded until at least 8
days after the upgrade and I posted how to do so last Sunday and repeated
twice since then as to how you can find that post. Once you downloaded the
iOS 7.1.2 file downgrading via iTunes takes less than 15 minutes. But Apple
stopped signing the firmware I think on Thursday so it's too late now.

Regards,
Sieghard

I want to remind the person who started this thread that if they had
done their research before upgrading they would have been educated as
to the problems with IOS 8. Knowing that IOS has major bugs with
bluetooth keyboars, I would have thought twice about upgrading. This
includes the knowledge that a work around exists for the Bluetooth
problem.

I am upset with the developers of Apple. They should know better. Also
what's this crap of them updating the software and then having the cell

2014-09-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Both Money Reader and Light Detector work just fine on my 5S. I think this
is more an Apple bug rather than something that has to be fixed by the
developers because if the app simply wouldn't work under iOS 8 it wouldn't
work for anybody. I remember Lois said Money Reader didn't work on her
iPhone 5, but she got a new iPhone 6 and after she downloaded Money Reader
it worked.

Well my friend. I can tell you. You are right. Apple in the last 2 years has
been doing very very bad. They are abusing of their reputation. They are
believing that they are enough, and they are not paying so much attention to
the quality of their products. As I said before. My iPhone 5s, is the last
iPhone that I would be buy. Until apple start to be more humble, and more
focus in the quality of Ios, and iPhones also. By the way, today I read
something online, saying that are people making complain to apple, because
their iPhone 6+ bends if they put the iPhone in the pockets. Apple respond
that their phones are created with a very high quality of glass, and
titanium, but any way, are people who reported their iPhones 6+, bended.
So sad.

RE: issues I have with the new update.

2014-09-28 Thread Pablo Morales

Did you also read the Consumer Reports follow-up report where they purchased an
iPhone 6+ and tested it against sevcral other phones of the same size?

Well, the iPhone withstood 20 pounds more pressure before starting to bend
compared with it's closest competitor. In other words, the story about Apple
being so bad did not hold up.

When you switch to Android or WINDOWS phone, please let me know how much better

I agree this is good advice, but one of the advantages of going with
Apple and their mainstream products is that we should be on a level
playing field with our sighted counterparts. If a blind person has to
wait for other blind people to update to see what bugs exist in an
update to IOS before updating themselves then I think this is a problem.
Sighted people aren't advised to wait to upgrade to a new version of IOS
and take advantage of the new features in that version, and blind people
should be able to do the same thing.

RE: issues I have with the new update.

2014-09-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Enjoy iOS 7.1.2, I think it was an excellent choice not to update and I'm
sure if you keep checking the list you'll hear all about it when bugs are
fixed.

Regards,

Sadder when you spend all that extra money, and find some of the irritations
and limitations of a'droid.

Agree, those iOs bugs are bad!.. some have managed to work around and live

with them, while they're fixed.

Hello folks. I usually don't post on
here much. However, I am very displeased with Apple. For a company that is
very Reputable, I expect a lot more out of apple. I am extremely
disappointed. I just might let them know this. First, when a person dials a
number manually with voice-over, the numbers stick. I don't know if this is
fixed in IOS 8.02 or not.
I might
email apple and let them know this. If Apple continues to do foolish things
like this on their updates, then I will switch to a droid. What a sad day
that would be. What do you all think?

The following information

2014-09-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

In other words, the story about Apple
being so bad did not hold up.

When you switch to Android or WINDOWS phone, please let me know how much
better the new phone choice works out for you. Which ever phone you decide
to go with, I hope it works out for you. As for me, I remain an Apple fanboy
for now.

Well my friend. I can tell you. You are right. Apple in the last 2 years
has
been doing very very bad. They are abusing of their reputation. They are
believing that they are enough, and they are not paying so much attention
to
the quality of their products.
 So sad.
