I’m gonna vote for Apple’s own Podcast App! Yeah I’m a partial, and mainly a
Zoom user, but I like the Listen Now page, and the subscribed page is there
should I wanna search for a skipped episode. Yeah, it’s a little sluggish
deleting played episodes but the learning curve is easy.

I used to like Downcast and it is a good Podcast app, but Overcast is also very
good and as some others pointed out, it probably has a few more features. One
feature I quite like is a setting where if turned on the app compresses the
small tiny pauses during speech. This may not sound like much, but it will
shave a bit of time off a Podcast without actually speeding up the speech.

RE: Favorite Tech Podcasts

2018-04-17 Thread Maria Reyes
Wayne, good point. What’s cool about Overcast is that the syncing from one
device to another is awesome. Better than the native podcast app in my opinion,
because when I delete a podcast on my phone, the episode gets deleted on my
iPad. In the native app, however I have to go remove the download off of my
iPad which gets really annoying.

Also, Overcast is free where Downcast cost about $2.99 or so. I've
been using Downcast for several years and love it. Occasionally I
experience bugs, but I haven't really had any major issues with it.

So Overcast has some features that Downcast doesn’t. It has Voice boost which
makes the people that are quiet sound louder. If you pause a podcast in
Overcast, the app will rewind a littlee to remind you of the conversation.

Re: Favorite Tech Podcasts

2018-04-17 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi all. I tend to agree that listening through the app on my phone is better
and more reliable. However, I have had some success asking Alexa to ask Anypod
to play a named podcast. The trouble with Alexa is having to remember the name
of the skill as well as the name of the podcast. I hope that the Echo gets
smarter by eliminating skill names as I like the rest of what it does. I use it
to play my audible books and it works great.

Re: Favorite Tech Podcasts

2018-04-12 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi Sieghard and all,

I usually listen to Today In iOS using my preferred podcast app, Overcast.
However, I also have the app for a couple of reasons. It makes it easy to
contact the podcast creator and to search for content. The person who wanted to
know when VoiceOVer is first mentioned might be able to find out using the app,
for example. It also provides notifications about significant Apple events and
when podcasts are released, which can be useful. In addition, it provides
direct access to written material Rob produces that he refers to in the
podcasts.

Best,
Anna

Anyone per chance know in which podcast he first mentioned
VoiceOver? I thought of writing in and asking him; however, other
than a partial mention of it for an occasional PayPal donation,
grin, I'm not keen on having my name given on the podcast. I
purchased my first iPhone in 2011, and only started listening
somewhere around that time.

I so far found that listening to Podcasts with the Echo does not work well at
all. If as Richard you google this you find a bunch of
information mostly saying that Alexa gets the Podcasts from Tune In and that
you can use the Alexa app on the phone to search for
Podcasts and then play them via the Echo. This of course is ridiculously
complicated, much easier then to open my favourite Podcast
app where I have already set up a list of my favourite Podcasts. It is also
interesting to note that you can enable skills for other
services like Spreaker and you are supposed to be able to say "Alexa, ask
Spreaker to play..." followed by the Podcast name.
However, when I tried this it worked just as poorly.
Unless Alexa can play the Podcasts I like when I tell her to and without fuss I
will just use my iPhone and Overcast.

Sieghard

All,

What are your favorite podcasts that are technology-oriented, blind focused or
otherwise? Obviously the Daily Fible is great, but
I'm also wondering about the best podcasts since DF has to be listened to live.

The app used to cost 99 Cents, but it’s free now. I don’t see a need for it,
though, you can listen to it just as well with any Podcast app.

I like the Today In IOS podcast. It sometimes is listed as TII.
It is not VoiceOver specific, but he is very aware of VoiceOver and mentions it
sometimes.
He has an app to, but you can access it from any podcast player.
His app is completely VoiceOver accessible. I think it might cost something.
But, give an episode a listen and see what you think.

Re: Favorite Tech Podcasts

2018-04-11 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi Richard and all,

The TII app used to cost, but now it's free. I agree that this is an excellent
podcast.

Best,
Anna

Re: Favorite Tech Podcasts

2018-04-11 Thread Richard Turner
I like the Today In IOS podcast. It sometimes is listed as TII.
It is not VoiceOver specific, but he is very aware of VoiceOver and mentions it
sometimes.
He has an app to, but you can access it from any podcast player.
His app is completely VoiceOver accessible. I think it might cost something.
But, give an episode a listen and see what you think.
Richard

What are your favorite podcasts that are technology-oriented, blind focused or
