Re: Supplementing my iPhone with an iPod: Good Idea?
Wouldn't an external battery be much cheaper than buying a separate device? I mean, my iPhone does everything, and my awesome, 200100 MAH battery only cost me around $50. I will admit that I do have one of those Sansa ClipZip mp3 players with Rockbox on it, with a 128 GB micro SD card in it for my large audiobook and music collections, to say nothing of my collection of personal recordings, but this is more for convenience sake than anything else. Sometimes I just want to use a device without a touchscreen that I can stop very quickly with the press of just one button. I know, we have the two-finger double-tap, and it works very well, but I really do like this tiny player. Lol I guess I'm just saying everything the people who have multiple iOS devices said earlier. The player was $109, and the card was around $40, so still cheaper than an extra iPod, but still. Lol I actually still have my old iPod Nano. It's the generation before they put in the video player. My husband and I still use it almost every night to listen to the audiobooks we have that didn't come from BARD. Re: Supplementing my iPhone with an iPod: Good Idea?
Hi Craig, I do have an iPod. I like to have separate devices for listening to books and music rather than using my phone and draining it's battery. Personal preference. I now also have a Fire tablet which works really well with Kindle books and just putting on MP3's quickly to listen to. Yes, definitely personal choice here. I like different devices for different things. Take care, Carla. RE: Supplementing my iPhone with an iPod: Good Idea?
Hi Here is my two cents on using an IPod along with an IPhone. My IPhone does not have the maximum storage capacity so I also use an IPad i.e. tablet. I use the tablet to store my apps such as Bard Mobile and Audible along with many other apps that I use such as Tell Me When, My Fitness Pal etc. this way I am not taking up all the storage on my phone with apps that I do not use on a regular basis such as facebook or Lire. If I had thought about it when purchasing my phone, I would have gone with the largest storage phone so I only had to use one device. But, unfortunately, I did not think nor did I have the money to purchase the larger phone. I do not know anything about IPods but I believe they can run the same as an IPad Mini in price and between the two devices, I would go with the tablet. I like the tablet for the larger screen when wanting to views phots or face time my family. My only complaint about the IPad Mini is that I see a difference in how apps are designed for the tablet compared to the phone. The apps for the phone are easier to navigate and function much better. RE: Supplementing my iPhone with an iPod: Good Idea?
I agree with those who say it is a personal choice. Although I have never had an iPod, I have often had more than one iPhone, but, in my specific case, pretty much found it not worth the trouble to keep up more than one device at a time. Thus, I would wind up giving the older iPhone to a family member within a few weeks, rather than waiting several months as I had originally planned. - Original Message - From: "Ekstrand, Pamela A. -ND" <pamela.a.ekstrand@disney.com To: "viphone@googlegroups.com" <viphone@googlegroups.com Date sent: Wed, 24 Jan 2018 18:42:56 + Subject: RE: Supplementing my iPhone with an iPod: Good Idea? Re: Supplementing my iPhone with an iPod: Good Idea?
My oldest iPod, the original one I got that was a fourth generation, admittedly hardly gets any use. Occasionally I use the fifth GEN when my sixth generation one is recharging, or when it is more convenient to have an iPod running with something while doing something with the other device. I like keeping my iPhone ready for when I’m out. > On Jan 24, 2018, at 5:32 AM, 'Sandy Tomkins' via VIPhone >wrote: > > hi, > I use my old iPhones for reading books et cetera. > HTH, Sandy > > Sent from The dark side of the moon > >> On 23 Jan 2018, at 17:09, Craig Werner wrote: >> >> Hello, everyone. >> >> Much of what I use my iPhone for can just as well be accomplished with >> an iPod. Re: Supplementing my iPhone with an iPod: Good Idea?
I kept an iPhone 6S when I upgraded to an iPhone 7, and I use it all the time. I have it muted and set on do not disturb because when I’m reading or listening to ball games, I don’t want them being interrupted by notifications, texts, calls, etc., that frequently come in on my primary phone. I am running beta IOS on the backup phone but not on my primary phone, just in case what has been downloaded has bugs in it. That way I can check it out but not get stuck if it’s something that presents a problem. I keep them both updated, which really isn’t that big a deal since I use them both all the time. Of course, since my backup phone no longer has a SIM card, I can only use it with WIFI, but that’s no problem. If I am listening to a football or basketball game in the car, for example, obviously I have to use my primary phone and hope I don’t get a call to interrupt it. LOL! So, as everyone else has been saying, it is most definitely a matter of preference. RE: Supplementing my iPhone with an iPod: Good Idea?
Definitely no cellular iPod Touch and at this point the newest iPod Touch which is the sixth generation was released in July of 2015. It has the same processor as an iPhone 6 which was released the fall before (in September 2014) and the CPU is the A8. You would be buying technology now which is three generations old, the iPod Touch also does not have the same GPS capabilities as an iPhone although I don't think that would matter to Craig since he would use it primarily at home for books, music etc. I agree with Christopher, the idea of a second device sounds good, but to me it is also not practical for the same reasons, I have to spend more time maintaining and upgrading it and all that. Re: Supplementing my iPhone with an iPod: Good Idea?
I agree it's a matter of choice, how you'll be using the 2nd device and what's important to you. For me, I've tried this a few times, and I end up just mostly using my primary device. It's usually the newer and faster system. Again, depending on what you're doing on each system, a second system will require some TLC, such as installing updates, installing and updating apps and getting or syncing content over to it. I find that although my intentions are good when I pick up a second device, my habits aren't as good, so I don't put the time into updating and maintaining the second device and it's content, so I take the lazy way out and just end up using my primary device. My one exception to this is with my Booksense which I still use to read my NLS books. I just hit a button and I'm reading the book I was just reading, and I'm picking up right where I left off. There's no updating software, launching an app or any maintenance whatsoever except for copying books over to it. Copying books over isn't as easy as downloading them from BARD to my smart phone, but I'm willing to put up with this to get to the other conveniences I get from the Booksense, including what some others have also mentioned, such as moving some battery drain off of my smart phone to another device. One of the reasons this works for me is that the Booksense is so different from my smart phones and so convenient for the one thing I ask it to do. My iPhone 4S and Nexus 7 are just older slower versions of what I already have in my iPhone 7 and S7, so I just don't see much advantage to spending time on them to have them do something my newer devices do better and faster anyway. Re: Supplementing my iPhone with an iPod: Good Idea?
Like most things this is simply a matter of choice. I have an IPhone and an IPod Touch and use both quite a lot. For listening to music and books, I find using the IPod is best for me. It is so much lighter and thinner that it slips into a pocket or purse and I hardly know it is there. It is strictly my entertainment device and I never liked using the phone for that. RE: Supplementing my iPhone with an iPod: Good Idea?
The 5S I use as a second line I'll sometimes use to stream music via Pandora if I'm working out or as a timer and during baseball season to stream the A's games. When my wife may be visiting her family in Germany to facetime, but other than that, it doesn't get much use outside of business calls. If you can score a refurbished or used iPod on the cheap, then I guess depending on the price it might make sense, but I definitely wouldn't pay full retail price or anything close to that for one at this point. Besides, they haven't been updated since 2015 I think. The only one worht even considering is the sixth generation which is the only one to be a 64 bit processor which is probably going to be the last one anyway. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Candy Lowe Sent: Tuesday, January 23, 2018 9:46 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Supplementing my iPhone with an iPod: Good Idea? Hi Craig, All I can say is that I kept my iPhone 5S for a while after I bought a 6S Plus and exactly for that reason, to use it at home for books, controlling Sonos etc. I very quickly realized that my 5S was mostly lying around on the night table and I used my 6S Plus anyways since I usually have it in my belt holster or in a pocket or lying nearby in case of phone calls and such. Yes, you can set it up that when you are at home and both phones are on WiFi your iPod Touch (or old phone) rings when somebody calls, but for me at least two devices never worked out. You are going to spend probably at least between $200 and $300 for an iPod Touch.
